Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather is set to be interviewed April 25 on CBS Sunday Morning 18 years after his controversial exit from the network.
The episode logline reads, “Lee Cowan talks with former CBS News anchor Dan Rather about his work at CBS and his life in news.”
The 92-year-old journalist exited under a cloud. A 60 Minutes II report in 2004 made allegations that President George W. Bush went Awol during part of his time in the Texas Air National Guard.
The Bush administration disputed the authenticity of the documents cited in the story. CBS investigated and found that the piece disregarded “fundamental journalistic principles.” The documents were not proved to be forgeries, casting doubts on the entire incident.
Rather was removed from the anchor desk in 2005 before being fired the subsequent year. Producer Mary Mapes and three news executives were also let go from CBS for their involvement.

To the list of international megastars who have made the jump to TV, add Cate Blanchett. FX announced Tuesday that Blanchett will star in the planned drama “Mrs. America.” The limited series will focus on the ’70s-era fight for the Equal Rights Amendment.
Blanchett will play Phyllis Schlafly, headlining a roster of pivotal figures during the legal and public battle to pass the amendment. In addition to being an outspoken opponent of the Equal Rights Amendment, Schlafly also took stances against same-sex marriage during her decades in public life as a voice in the American conservative movement.
Tuesday’s announcement also revealed that in addition to Schlafly, “Mrs. America” will feature a number of notable feminist activists from that time, including Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug and Jill Ruckelshaus.

Aaron Glenane in ‘Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.’
Aaron Glenane is honoured to be among the 10 finalists for this year’s Heath Ledger Scholarship, which will be announced by Australians in Film (AiF) on Friday local time.
“It’s very moving to have the support of AiF and the industry behind you,” the actor tells If from the Toronto set of his current production. “That says, ‘You’re doing all right, keep going.’”
The fellow finalists for the $US30,000 Scholarship are Harvey Zielinski, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Ezekiel Simat, Gemma Bird Matheson, Kipan Rothbury, Brenna Harding, Bethany Whitmore, Charmaine Bingwa and Nicholas Denton.
Arguably Glenane is doing rather better than all right after scoring roles this year in his current project, Kriv Stenders’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan, Rachel Griffiths’ Ride Like a Girl and Drunk History, Eureka Productions’ half-hour comedy which screened during Network Ten’s Pilot Week.

Truth is the feature film based on the book Truth and Duty: The Press, The President, and The Privilege of Power by Mary Mapes. It is the true story of Mary Mapes (played by Cate Blanchett) an award-winning CBS News Journalist and Dan Rather’s (played by Robert Redford) 60 Minutes producer. The film chronicles the story Mapes and Rather uncovered that a sitting Us president may have been Awol from the United States National Guard for over a year during the Vietnam War. When the story blew up in their face, the ensuing scandal ruined Dan Rather’s career, nearly changed a Us Presidential election, and almost took down all of CBS News in the process. And we've got an Exclusive clip you can watch below. Truth opens in cinemas tomorrow (Friday 4th March)...

If there ever were a single event that established the internet as a counter to a highly biased press, it was Dan Rather’s blatant attempt in 2004 to fix an election using phony documentation. It’s been well documented that 60 Minutes Producer Mary Mapes and Rather wanted a “gotcha” story so they ignored journalistic standards to produce one. And they might have gotten away with it (and in an earlier day they would have), except we had entered the Internet age where almost anyone at home could check the facts and documents. That’s what happened and the story quickly fell apart. They got caught lying and fabricating evidence and were drummed out of the mainstream media. That would make an interesting movie rather than Truth, an attempt to make cheaters look like they were doing something noble.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
The Assassin (Hou Hsiao-Hsien)
If the meditative stylings of Russian auteur Andrei Tarkovsky were applied to the martial arts genre, the end result would likely resemble Hou Hsiao-hsien’s rapturous tone poem The Assassin. As much concerned with the essence of nature as it is the essence of humanity, this endlessly beautiful film is equal parts enigmatic storytelling as it is purely enthralling cinema. Though...

Dan Rather still stands by the CBS News report that got him fired, nearly a decade and one feature film later.
The former anchor's reputation was tarnished after the accuracy of his 2004 story questioning President George W. Bush's military service was publicly disputed by the leader's administration. The entire saga was recently dramatized on the big screen in Truth, starring Robert Redford as Rather.
"We reported a true story. We didn't do it perfectly," the 84-year-old recently told The Hollywood Reporter. "We made some mistakes of getting to the truth. But that didn't change the truth of what we reported.

With last week’s announcements of the nominees for both the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes, a number of high-profile performances did not make it on the list. But fear not, snubbed actors, as you may still have a shot at Oscar come February.
Here’s a look at those actors who weren’t recognized by SAG and the Globes but are still in the hunt:
Michael Caine, 82, plays a retired orchestra conductor on vacation with his director best friend (Harvey Keitel) in the Swiss Alps in Youth. The film earned a best supporting actress nomination for co-star Jane Fonda, but Caine himself has not been honored with any nods for his performance. Caine would look for a best actor nomination.
Tom Courtenay, 78, plays a husband who, on the night of his 45th wedding anniversary, receives an unexpected letter that could change his life in the drama 45 Years.

This year’s Oscar hopefuls boasts the largest roster of biopics in recent memory. From more traditional, straight-forward affairs such as Straight Outta Compton and Black Mass, to films that focus on one particular real-life event such as The Big Short and Spotlight, to less typical takes focused on separate periods in the subjects’ lives such as Steve Jobs and Love & Mercy, this year’s films cover the entire spectrum of the biopic genre.
As a result, many of the frontrunners in the four major acting categories are for performances portraying real-life people. Looking back on the Academy’s history, it is hard to find a year in which an acting award did not go to a performer portraying a real person. Eddie Redmayne, Matthew McConaughey, and Daniel Day-Lewis (the last three best actor winners) all starred in biographical films.

We are just a week away from Thanksgiving and Oscar voters are sure to have a bounty of screeners to watch over the holiday. On Friday, they should be getting "Truth," a fascinating film by writer/director James Vanderbilt that delves into the news story that brought down Dan Rather. Screen legend Robert Redford plays the veteran anchorman and two-time Oscar champ Cate Blanchett is Mary Mapes, a producer for "60 Minutes" who investigated allegations that President George W. Bush received preferential treatment that allowed him to avoid Vietnam by serving in the Texas Air National Guard. They aired the report in the middle of the 2004 election and quickly came under attack for its evidentiary shortfalls. CBS ultimately apologized while Mapes, who wrote the book upon which this film is based, was fired and Rather was forced to resign a few months later. -Break- Subscribe to Gold Derby Breaking News Alerts & Experts’ Latest Oscar Pr.

Right, so, in September 2004, CBS’s newsmagazine 60 Minutes aired a story about recently uncovered military memos from the 1970s that appeared to offer some background to the fact — undisputed fact — that then U.S. President George W. Bush had failed to fulfill the requirements of his service in the Texas Air National Guard, which was itself a way for him to dodge the draft and avoid being sent to Vietnam. And almost instantly afterward, the authenticity of the memos came under attack. Not the content of the memos, but...

Chicago – One of the indications of how the story depicted in “Truth” still resonates was that the CBS Network refused to show advertising for it. The film is a lesson in messing with true power – CBS News went after the ruthless Bush administration during an election year, and they went down.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
This is a story told from the side of Mary Mapes, a news producer for “60 Minutes II.” In 2004, she received a document that supposedly proved that a younger George W. Bush went Awol from his National Guard service during the Vietnam War era. Relying on a few sources, and some signature and document experts, the show broadcast the story through CBS News anchor Dan Rather. What happened next is indicative of modern journalism, and messing with power. The story was called out as false on the internet – based on the damning document itself – and the production staff fell like a house of cards.

Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford take on a real life scandal in their latest film.
Truth is the story of "CBS News" anchor Dan Rather and producer Mary Mapes whose careers were ruined when they were criticized for an investigation that they did on President George W. Bush's military service back in 2004.
With six new clips, it's evident that Truth is going to be another powerhouse performance from Blanchett. She also is receiving raves for her role in Carol, which hits theatres later this year. Redford is perfectly cast as the famous news anchor which also stars Dennis Quaid, Elisabeth Moss, Topher Grace, and Bruce Greenwood.
It's a big year for journalism in film, as later this year sees another true story about investigative journalism with Tom McCarthy's Spotlight. Between these two films, we're bound to get a good dose of scandal. Truth hits theatres today. Check out the six clips below.

Truth examines the events around the 2004 “60 Minutes” report on then president George W. Bush’s military service, which led to Dan Rather’s resignation and producer Mary Mapes’ firing. But in truth, the film is as much about the pitfalls of news reporting under the pressure of the 24-hour news cycle, and journalism’s traditional mission, the search for truth. Viewers may think they already know this story but, like the document at the center, not all is what it seems, and the truth is more complicated.

It was the scandal that shook "CBS News" and capitulated the downfall of esteemed anchor Dan Rather. In the centre of it all was Mary Mapes, CBS producer and the heroine of the upcoming newsroom thriller, Truth. Aptly named, the film portrays the real-life events of the 2004 story that aired on 60 Minutes calling George W. Bush’s military record and service in the Texas Air National Guard into question.
The story was faced with immediate criticism online about the authenticity of the source documents and put Mary Mapes at the forefront for attack. Mapes, played brilliantly by Cate Blanchett, is the fiery producer that investigates the story, collaborates with Dan Rather (Robert Redford) to run the story, and ultimately brings them both down in the process.

Clinton’s restrained appearance at the recent Benghazi hearing mirrors the behaviour of real-life TV producer Mary Mapes, played by Cate Blanchett, in James Vanderbilt’s Truth – and highlights the disheartening reality of sexism in the workplace
Related: Benghazi hearing: Hillary Clinton shows yoga poise through 11-hour stretch
Most of the time, reality isn’t like the movies – especially political reality. In Hollywood, political characters are celebrated for their passion and eloquence, but that’s not how it works in Washington. At least not for Hillary Clinton. When Clinton was questioned about the attack on Benghazi by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2013, she fought back and passionately defended her actions. If this were an Aaron Sorkin vehicle, Clinton would have been seen as a hero for standing up to the evil establishment. But Sorkin only writes Great Men, not Great Women, and Clinton was politically punished for her response.

CBS has declined to air advertising for the new movie "Truth," the new Sony flick that details the network's infamous Dan Rather-George W. Bush scandal, calling the film "a disservice" to both journalists and the public.
In a scathing statement about the film, which stars Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett, CBS spokesman Gil Schwartz said, "It's astounding how little truth there is in 'Truth.'"
"There are, in fact, too many distortions, evasions and baseless conspiracy theories to enumerate them all," Schwartz's statement continued. "The film tries to turn gross errors of journalism and judgment into acts of heroism and martyrdom. That's a disservice not just to the public but to journalists across the world who go out every day and do everything within their power, sometimes at great risk to themselves, to get the story right."

Part of the Monday morning routine here is to check the weekend box office numbers to see what shined and what bombed. And on this October 19th, it is a pleasure to share the news that "Truth", the fairy tale disguised as non-fiction on Dan Rather and Mary Mapes' discredited report on George W. Bush's military service record, performed exceptionally poorly in its opening weekend. Per The Hollywood Reporter: One high-profile title that's off to a poor start is Truth, starring Robert Redford as ousted CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather and Cate Blanchett as disgraced 60 Minutes producer Mary Mapes. The Sony Pictures Classics release opened to $76,646 from six locations in New York and Los Angeles for a theater average of $12,774.

Even after it brought in $600,000 from Thursday night preshows they held firm saying the children's horror was tracking for a $12-15 million opening. While the film fell well shy of my $31.5 million prediction, it did manage enough to top the weekend box office in a weekend that saw four new wide releases hit the marketplace, none of which managed to truly breakout. With an estimated $23.5 million, Goosebumps took the top spot, playing in 3,501 theaters. The "A" CinemaScore from opening day audiences suggests this could be looking at a solid run through the month of October as there is little left to satisfy the family audience until The Peanuts Movie arrives on November 6. Goosebumps topped Ridley Scott's two-time box office champion The Martian by two million. The Matt Damon-starrer finished its third weekend with an...

I think the film raises interesting, quite provocative questions about the intersection over our politicians, the media and the big business.”Based on Mapes’ memoir Truth and Duty: The Press, The President And The Privilege Of Power, the film was...

The controversy came after CBS aired a "60 Minutes II" report about George W. Bush's military record that it was later forced to retract, ending Dan Rather's career and tainting the network. The firestorm and the events that led up to it are dramatized in "Truth," which stars Robert Redford as Rather and Cate Blanchett as Mary Mapes, the producer who shepherded the story. CBS criticized the film and denied Sony Pictures Classics' attempt to purchase airtime during programs including "60 Minutes." CBS Corp. spokesman Gil Schwartz, who is portrayed in "Truth," told the The Hollywood Reporter, "It's astounding how little truth there is in 'Truth.' There are, in fact, too many distortions,...

CBS was always going to have an awkward relationship with Truth: The upcoming film tells the story of 2004's Memogate scandal, in which Dan Rather and 60 Minutes got taken in by documents that purportedly showed a young George W. Bush going Awol from the Air National Guard. (Though the memos are widely acknowledged as fakes, Rather and his producer Mary Mapes insist the information they contained was true.) Unsurprisingly, the 2015 version of CBS does not seem keen on promoting this movie, with THR reporting that the network turned down millions of dollars in ad buys for Truth on Late Show With Stephen Colbert, CBS This Morning, The CBS Evening News, and 60 Minutes itself. The problem isn't just the reopening of old wounds — CBS insiders apparently object to the way they're depicted in the film, which portrays Rather and Mapes as dogged investigators who were sold out by network...

History might be written by the winners, but nowadays the losers have a good shot at getting their versions out if they can entice the likes of Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford into embodying them onscreen. In Truth, Blanchett plays the former CBS News producer Mary Mapes, and Redford the anchorman — and, according to the film, Mapes’s surrogate father — Dan Rather. Based on Mapes’s memoir, Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power, the movie is a righteously one-sided, unsubtle, and fairly effective account of “Rathergate,” the 2004 scandal that brought Mapes and Rather down: the discrediting of a letter that was supposed to prove that the young George W. Bush had not shown up for a good part of his Air National Guard service — itself the result of “Poppy” Bush using his influence to keep his son out of Vietnam.Did Mapes have any...

Truth is a film with a target audience that is very difficult to move. If you aren’t overly moved by the thought of exploring Dan Rather and his problem with the President, convincing you to show up is going to be the kind of task that marketing hasn’t cracked yet.
That’s the trouble with making such movies, because even filmmakers and studios that want to “tell great stories” are hoping for some Roi. The only option available is to appeal to those out there who could be convinced to see something with Robert Redford and/or Cate Blanchett that they don’t find automatically appealing.
To that end, the film has released a couple of clips that showcase the more intense build of the film, but also its stars. Thus, we get a couple of scenes that offer up close conversations. Hopefully, they will convince that the...

"I wanted it to not be a homework movie. We've seen those where you feel like you're going to be lectured at for two hours," admits writer/director James Vanderbilt about his new film "Truth," which delves into the news story that brought down veteran anchorman Dan Rather. He says that a writing professor once told him, "If you want to write a message, call Western Union. Your job is to write movies." In our recent interview (listen below), he adds, "First and foremost I wanted it to be something that is exciting and pulls you through emotionally. And then if there's stuff on top that makes you think about journalism and where we are, that's great but that's all gravy." -Break- Dish Oscars with Hollywood insiders in our red-hot forums Two-time Oscar champ Cate Blanchett plays Mary Mapes, a producer for "60 Minutes Wednesday" (aka "60 Minutes 2"), who works with the legendar.

Cate Blanchett makes any movie worth seeing, and Truth is no exception. The directorial debut for screenwriter James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, White House Down), the film chronicles a memorable chapter in the history of television news. Whether or not it’s wholly truthful is a lingering question, since it’s based on one person’s point of view. In this case that person is veteran news producer Mary Mapes, who worked for CBS and won a Peabody Award for her groundbreaking coverage of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib. Blanchett brings her to life as a fully-realized character—aggressive, single-minded, impetuous. I’ve worked with people like her. The movie has the ring of truth and that’s what...

In some ways, the film Truth is the “other” film in this year’s awards race, which can be either a blessing or a curse, depending on the situation. It’s the “other” Cate Blanchett Oscar player besides Carol, and the “other” journalism tale this season besides Spotlight. I’ll have plenty more on both Carol and Spotlight in the weeks to come, trust me there (especially in the latter’s case), but today I want to look at James Vanderbilt’s Truth, which opens in limited release this week and is not just a vehicle for Blanchett, but for Robert Redford as well. Is it up to snuff for the Academy? Well, I’ll tell you a bit more below… The movie is an adaptation of the book by Mary Mapes and a look at the controversy surrounding those who worked at the news magazine show 60 Minutes and the CBS evening news.

Robert Redford dramatises the fall of former CBS newsman Dan Rather in the latest teaser for Truth.
The gripping docu-drama explains the fallout of CBS News airing explosive allegations about George W Bush's military record in the run-up to the 2004 election.
Questions about the authenticity of CBS's allegations would later bring an end to Rather's 24-year run as anchor of the CBS Evening News.
The film is based on the memoir of Rather's long-time producer Mary Mapes, who is played in Truth by Oscar winner Cate Blanchett.
White House Down and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 writer James Vanderbilt both wrote and directed Truth.
Truth opens on Friday (October 16) in Us cinemas.

Never count out Cate Blanchett. With two Oscars on her mantle from six nominations, she's one of the most respected actors in the game and a force to be reckoned with during the awards season. While the reviews for "Truth" aren't all raves, she could still very much be a contender for this picture, not to mention that she's pretty much a lock for her work in "Carol." James Vanderbilt (screenwriter of David Fincher's "Zodiac") makes his directorial debut with the journalism drama that follows the fallout of "60 Minutes" reporter Mary Mapes 2004 story on George W. Bush's questionable military record that saw him avoid serving in Vietnam. Dan Rather (played by Robert Redford) presented to the piece to the American public, and to put it bluntly, all hell broke loose. The movie provides a look at the integrity of journalism as it comes up against the scrutiny of the media and general public.

Some have already built the coffin and engraved the tombstone for traditional journalism. With network news divisions and daily newspapers cutting their budgets, coupled with the rise of online reporting, the landscape has changed and expanded, allowing more voices to participate in narratives that were once controlled by only a select few gatekeepers. This new era is still in its nascent stages, and certainly, the broadened field of those who call themselves “journalists” doesn’t always adhere to the strictest of journalistic standards. Many in the media lament this supposed loss of consistency in this new school of reporters, but taking that line paints an inaccurate portrait of the old way of doing things. However, it’s a myth writer/director James Vanderbilt is more than happy to reinforce in his unambiguously titled, “Truth.” Based on the memoir by Mary Mapes, which also features an unambiguous title, “Truth And Duty,...

When it comes to this year’s Academy Awards, Cate Blanchett has a problem that’s at once frustrating and enviable: She's poised to dominate this awards season with lead roles in the Todd Haynes lesbian romance Carol and the journalism drama Truth, but Oscar rules stipulate that a Best Actress candidate can only be nominated for one performance, not two. Perhaps it's fitting, though, that Blanchett is her own rival: Who else could measure up to this two-time Oscar winner, considered one of the most versatile and talented performers in film at age 46? It may be months before we know which way those awards-season chips will fall, but in the meantime, I met up with Blanchett in Los Angeles to discuss the Jamie Vanderbilt–directed Truth, where she plays hard-charging 60 Minutes producer Mary Mapes, whose 2004 report on the National Guard tenure of then-president George W.
