Thierry Guetta, the French street artist known as “Mr. Brainwash,” burst onto the L.A. art scene in 2008, as chronicled in the Academy Award-nominated 2010 documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, which led many to believe that Guetta’s sudden success was a stunt orchestrated by the mysterious artist-prankster Banksy.
This month, Guetta opened The Mr. Brainwash Art Museum in the former Paley Center for Media on Beverly Drive, slated for demolition next year. A (temporary) wonderland for his pop culture-infused works, it’s billed as “the first contemporary art museum created and run by a living artist.”
The three-story space features, among countless colorful canvases, a dinosaur made of books (a not-so-subtle commentary on how print is going extinct) and a jumbo version of the first Apple computer. Guetta tells THR: “Museums have been the same for many years. I accept it, I love it.

Exclusive: French artist Thierry Guetta aka Mr. Brainwash, who gained prominence after appearing in Banksy’s 2010 film Exit Through the Gift Shop, is getting his own documentary. The feature-length pic hails from Obb Pictures and will be directed by Michael D. Ratner, who helmed and executive produced Justin Bieber: Seasons for YouTube Originals and its follow-up Justin Bieber: Next Chapter.
Featuring never-before-seen archival footage, Mr. Brainwash will chronicle Guetta’s journey from obscurity to worldwide street art phenomena. It also will examine the roots of Mr. Brainwash’s identity, and questions our fascination with art, talent and ubiquity while serving as a critique of modern art.

It’s hard to imagine that the definitive studio movie about Trump-era authoritarianism would come from the guy behind “Taken 2” and “Taken 3,” but that sure didn’t stop him from trying. Of course, you should never doubt the delusional self-confidence of a man who changed his last name to “Megaton,” just as you should never put your faith in a filmmaker who’s basically the Mr. Brainwash to Luc Besson’s Banksy.
Here’s the thing about “The Last Days of American Crime” — you don’t have time for this shit. None of us do. And that’s not just because Olivier Megaton’s agonizingly dull Netflix feature is 149 minutes long (a crime unto itself). While there’s never really a good moment to introduce a bad movie into the world, . We’re all for escapism where you can get it — this critic has streamed an ungodly amount...

Stephen Colbert welcomed Samantha Bee to the stage at Njpac in Newark, New Jersey, on Dec. 6, where she was the special guest on Sad! A Happy Evening with Stephen Colbert & Samantha Bee, a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival.
During their hour-and-a-half-long chat, the longtime friends talked everything from dealing with politics (specifically President Donald Trump's tumultuous first-year in office) during their late night monologues -- Colbert hosts The Late Show on CBS while Bee is the face of Full Frontal on TBS -- as well as the seismic shift in culture surrounding sexual harassment since the Harvey Weinstein allegations came to light.

What better way to ring in the new year than with a loved one?
Nicole Kidman surprised Keith Urban on stage as the singer headlined Jack Daniel's Music City Midnight: New Year's Eve in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday. The father of two put on an incredible tribute to artists lost in 2016, including Prince, David Bowie, Merle Haggard, Leonard Cohen and Glenn Frey -- with Kidman joining her husband on stage and dancing in the background.

The same night, Justin Bieber performed poolside at Fontainebleau Miami Beach, taking the stage right before the clock struck 12 to perform his hit songs, "Sorry," "What Do U Mean," and "Boyfriend," before DJs Marshmello and Skrillex joined the singer onstage for "Where Are U Now." As for who was in attendance for Bieber's New Year's performance? That would be Johnny Manziel, Jeremy Piven, Ansel Elgort, Lala Anthony, and Jonathan Cheban.

With the release of T2: Trainspotting less than a month away now – on the other side of the pond, at least – the hugely anticipated sequel is moving along steadily with its promotional campaign, which continues today with some slick new Empire Magazine covers.
Each cover highlights one of the main characters, draped in orange, black and white, as they were on the original film’s poster. The first cover features Ewan McGregor’s Renton, the second Robert Carlyle as Begbie, the third Ewen Bremner as Spud, and the fourth sees Jonny Lee Miller as Simon aka “Sick Boy.”

In addition to these character-centric covers, Empire subscribers will also receive a special one designed by none other than Banksy’s Exit Through the Gift Shop subject Mr. Brainwash. It features the four main characters in a street-art style cover resembling graffiti.

I grew up watching Trainspotting, and lucky for fans of the movie like me they have updated their new "Choose Life" quote to modern times:
.Choose life
Choose Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and hope that someone, somewhere cares
Choose looking up old flames, wishing you’d done it all differently
And choose watching history repeat itself
Choose your future
Choose reality TV, slut shaming, revenge porn
Choose a zero hour contract, a two hour journey to work
And choose the same for your kids, only worse, and smother the pain with an unknown dose of an unknown drug made in somebody’s kitchen
And then… take a deep breath
You’re an addict, so be addicted
Just be addicted to something else
Choose the ones you love
Choose your future
Choose life.
While this blows our current society away from the original "Choose Life" quote, and this is more a story of modern life,...

There is no other place where fact and fiction become more indistinguishable from one another than at the cinema. What you see isn’t always what you get: a manufactured image might feel genuine, while an image that feels inauthentic might be the real thing. The finest stories can often be found somewhere in the middle. As Pablo Picasso once said, “Art is not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realize truth.”

Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, we’ve never had better access to documentaries. A whole new audience can discover that these real life stories are just as thrilling, entertaining, and incredible as the latest big-budget blockbuster. What’s more, they’re all true too. But with a new found glut of them comes the ever more impossible choice, what’s worth your time? Below is my pick of the 50 best modern feature length documentaries.
I’ve defined modern as being from 2000 onwards, which means some of the greatest documentaries ever made will not feature here. I’m looking at you Hoop Dreams.

Chicago – She burned like a firework in the sky, and just as quickly faded away. The unique voice of Amy Winehouse was fresh air into the music vacuum, and yet the delicate state of her destructive addictions succumbed to a sudden notoriety. Director Asif Kapadia and producer James Gay-Rees tell her story in ‘Amy.’
The documentary stands by itself as a trek into darkness, through a 21st Century life captured on video, film and photographs from childhood to superstar fame. Amy Winehouse was a girl from North London with a jazz smooth vocal styling seemingly from the gods. She was twenty years old when her first album, “Frank” (2003), brought her to a wider audience. The follow-up in 2008, “Black to Black,” established Winehouse as a one-of-a-kind singer and personality. The ironic song “Rehab” from that album was a huge hit, but couldn’t save Winehouse from her own tragic sensitivity to love,...

For almost 30 years, Mark Landis forged artwork and passed it off as his own to various museums around the country. It wasn’t until Matthew Leininger, a registrar at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, investigated the pieces in 2008 that the forgery was exposed. Leininger dedicated his time to investigating Landis further, and the scale of forgeries was revealed in 2012. Both men are featured in Art and Craft, a documentary about Landis, directed by Jennifer Grausman and Sam Cullman and co-directed by Mark Becker. Whether you want to immerse yourself in the world of birds, bees, baseball or backup singers, Netflix has a documentary for you. Missed "Man on Wire"? It's on there.

1. "20 Feet from Stardom" (2013) PG-13
This Oscar-winning doc shines a spotlight on the relatively unknown backup singers behind such superstars as Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Mick Jagger, and Stevie Wonder.
2. "The Act of Killing" (2012)
The director invited killers -- men who took part in the horrific purge that left more than 500,000 dead in Indonesia in the 1960s -- to reenact their crimes on film, resulting in a bizarre look inside the mind of men capable of mass murder.

Our series of lists devoted to underappreciated films brings us to the year 2010, and another 25 overlooked gems...
By 2010, Hollywood’s obsession with 3D movies was in full swing. One of the most harrowing tragedies that can happen to any family is dealing with a missing child. The pain and anguish of not knowing what could have happened to their loved one is unimaginable except to those who have experienced it firsthand. But what if suddenly a call arrives from a foreign country, claiming to have the missing person in their possession, how would that family react?
Such is the focus of director Bart Layton’s The Imposter, a fascinating documentary that straddles the line between real life drama and a film noir narrative. Part of what makes this experience so unique is the masterful weaving between interviewing subjects and gleefully creating highly stylized re-enactments that heighten suspense and tension effectively. There’s a manner in which Layton subverts the audience’s normally complacent role of viewing into an active role of trying to comprehend the truth.
