Stars: Jordan Hayes, Max Topplin, James McGowan, Rosemary Dunsmore, Daniel Harroch | Written and Directed by Michael Nader
Michael Nader wrote the script for one of the more interesting and overlooked monster films of the last couple of years, Head Count. Now he’s back with The Toll, which he not only wrote but is the first feature he’s directed after several shorts.
The Toll is the latest entry in the “ride share from hell” genre that includes the likes of Spree, Ryde and Driven. And like the last of those films, this one has a supernatural edge to it that separates it from the majority of these films which rely exclusively on all to human monsters.
Cami has had a long, delay filled day of travelling. She just wants her driver Spencer to get her to her father’s place in the middle of nowhere. He turns out to...

"There's no one here!" Saban Films has released an official trailer for the indie supernatural horror film The Toll, heading straight-to-vod in March this year. This was originally to premiere at last year's SXSW Film Festival before it was cancelled. Described as "supernatural terror and spine-tingling suspense", this is one of the latest "ride-sharing horror thriller" films, but not in the usual way as things get creepy only once they arrive. A socially awkward driver and a weary passenger they try to make it to their destination while being haunted by a supernatural threat. By the end of this trailer it's obvious they end up trapped somewhere else. The main cast includes Jordan Hayes, Max Topplin, James McGowan, and Rosemary Dunsmore. This looks a bit strange overall and low quality, but perhaps it has frightening moments. Full trailer below. Here's the first official trailer (+ posters) for Michael Nader's The Toll,...

Maddie Hasson and Genesis Rodriguez have signed on to star in “Fixation,” a female-driven psychological thriller from director Mercedes Bryce Morgan.
Hasson stars as Dora, a young woman at the center of an unusual murder trial. As the film progresses, Dora is subjected to a psychiatric evaluation, and as the tests become more personal — and frightening — she begins to question the true motives of her doctor and is forced to live through the recreations of her past.
The description of the project explains that the story is intended to be an exploration of how women are gaslit by men in positions of power and boasts a predominantly female, LGBTQ and Bipoc crew, both in front of and behind the camera, led by Morgan — a queer, Latina filmmaker.
Best known for directing “Stargate Origins,” the Facebook series “Five Points” and music videos like Marshmello and Bastille’s “Happier,” Morgan makes her...

A rideshare with a giggly geek driver who may be a serial killer. The staggering-through-the-ink-black-woods-with-nothing-but-a-flashlight look and mood of “The Blair Witch Project.” A mystic schlock demon like Candyman, the Slender Man, or the spectral figures from “The Strangers.” A Victrola in the middle of the road, cranking an ancient warbly ditty à la “The Shining.” A cabin full of snowy TV screens out of the “Poltergeist” showroom. Memories of suicide, filicide, and a rape where the victim was blamed…
Each of these elements, ably handled, might exude a concrete scary resonance. But what are they all doing in the same horror movie? You could say that Michael Nader, the writer-director of “The Toll,” jams them together in an original way, striking just the right note of disquieting genre mashup to keep the audience pleasingly off balance. Or you could say that he’s cooked up a low-budget casserole out...

Originally slated to premiere this month at the 2020 SXSW Film Festival, The Toll from writer/director Michael Nader was able to enjoy a virtual premiere on Sunday night, allowing indie genre fans the opportunity to get to see the film despite everything going on in the world right now. And as a whole, The Toll proved itself to be a pretty darned good psychological thriller, although it doesn’t nearly end quite as strongly as it starts.
The story in The Toll is pretty straightforward stuff: a young woman named Cami (Jordan Hayes) has just spent a long day traveling, and gets a ride share to take her from the airport to her dad’s house out in the middle of nowhere. Her driver, Spencer (Max Topplin), is a bit of a Chatty Cathy, with some of his jokes not quite landing the right way with Cami, but once they...

Michelle Gomez has revealed that she's willing to keep playing the villainous 'Missy' on "Doctor Who" for some time to come. Speaking with io9, she revealed:
"I am having so much fun with this character, probably a little too much fun. Occasionally in a career, you get one or two chances to just really enjoy your work and have it not feel like work—even though it is hard work. It's just a blessing. I'll play her as long as I can, as long as I'm standing. I'd play her in a wheelchair. I love Missy. She's great fun." The new season of "Doctor Who" returns this Saturday.

Syfy's Arctic-set, pandemic-themed, sci-fi/horror series "Helix" became infamous last year for it's sheer craziness. Character and plot curveballs were thrown fast left and right to the point that it didn't make a whole lot of sense - especially towards the end.
The network has now released a new trailer for the show's second season which moves the action to a mysterious tropical island where a science-based cult is falling victim to a disease which Dr. Alan Farragut (Billy Campbell) and his team investigates.
Steven Weber looks to be essentially taking on the Hiroyuki Sanada role this time of the scientist in charge of the isolated locale who isn't letting on as to the extent of his involvement.
How the Ilaria group and the events of the finale tie into this is unknown at this point, but Julia (Kyra Zagorsky), Sarah (Jordan Hayes) and Peter (Neil Napier) are all returning.

By the time Season 1 ended, we were pretty disappointed in Syfy's "Helix," but some casting news for Season 2 has come in along with a few more details of what's ahead for the members of the Cdc so we thought we'd pass it on.

Syfy has announced that Steven Weber (pictured; "Wings," "Murder in the First") and Matt Long ("Mad Men," "Jack and Bobby") have joined the cast of its mysterious viral thriller "Helix."
The second season of "Helix" finds the doctors of the Centers for Disease Control, still haunted by the Narvik outbreak and the events that took place in Arctic Biosystems, investigating a deadly outbreak of a new disease on a Windjammer cruise ship. According to Blu-ray.com, Helix: The Complete First Season will be available on Blu-ray and DVD on July 1st via Syfy and Sony Pictures Television. Take the ‘science’ of Outbreak, and mix it with the claustrophobia, isolation, paranoia and freezing temperatures of The Thing, and you have Helix – Syfy’s science fiction thriller show, created by Cameron Porsandeh. With its first season proving to be a big hit with audiences watching on DVR, the show has earned a renewal for a second season.
The premise of the show sees a small group of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, travel to a remote and mysterious scientific research facility in the Arctic. They are tasked with investigating and resolving a potentially deadly outbreak of an unknown disease. As the situation spirals rapidly out of control, the complexities of relationships and the suspicious agendas within the groups trapped together are gradually revealed.

The scientists on Syfy's Helix have a tough battle ahead -- not unlike a new TV show's fight for survival. Will this series be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled due to low ratings instead? Stay tuned.
A thriller series, Helix follows a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to the Arctic and find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle. The cast includes Billy Campbell, Catherine Lemieux, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jordan Hayes, Kyra Zagorsky, Mark Ghanimé, Meegwun Fairbrother, and Neil Napier.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
3/28 update: The show has been renewed for a second season.

Helix, Season 1, Episode 10: “Fushigi”
Written by Misha Green
Directed by Jeremiah Chechik
Airs Fridays at 10 Pm on Syfy
The absence of the Narvik virus during the activities of Day 9, as well as the worsening of Dr. Jordan’s condition, both weighed heavily on the Cdc team as well as Dr. Hatake. Despite the numerous other threats that the group has been exposed to since the Cdc touched down at Arctic Biosystems, the imminent danger of the Narvik virus has been an ever-present concern, making the theft of it worrisome. This week’s episode focuses on Dr. Farragut and Dr. Walker’s attempts to retrieve it, in another compelling outing that reveals more about the central characters and their relationships to each other.
The reveal of silver eyes indicating immortality is an intriguing one. For all the hints that have been dropped about nefarious and illegal activities at Arctic Biosystems,...

Day 10! Tonight we get to see Day 10 of Syfy‘s absolutely exceptional and addicting Helix. Only four more episodes this season. If you haven’t been watching, get on it! Considering all the twists and turns this show has taken in nine episodes, so far the only non-surprise reveal was last week’s reveal at the end. Of course maybe it was only meant to be a reveal to Julia. I can’t wait to see if that obnoxious scientist guy will try to get away with the virus in a shaving cream can. Need. More. Now.
Here’s a little something to tide us over until tonight:

Noooooo not Day 9 already! I mean, of course, Yay, Day 9! 5 more episodes of this completely addictive, creepy, smart, twisty, so mysterious, excellent season of Helix. I say “season” because Syfy simply must renew this show. Must. I just wish they’d stop making us wait so long to celebrate.
And by the way, when I wrote “get a head start” in last week’s post, I had no idea it would end up being a pun. This week I’m calling the “ahead” reference an “homage.” Thanks for the absolutely excellent work, Jeri Ryan.

As you may know, we here at SciFi Mafia are major, elemental, over-the-top, gushing fans of the smart, creepy, completely addictive Helix. After last week’s addition of Jeri Ryan as the teeth-filing Constance Sutton, we all have even more questions.
Ms. Ryan and showrunner Steven Maeda spoke with media outlets last week about the character and the show, and to start, I asked her what drew her to the role:
Jeri Ryan: You know, it was fun – well the concept of the show to begin with was sort of intriguing to me. I hadn’t seen any of it at that point because it was just being shot. I loved the people that were involved in it. So that was all really cool. And then when I sort of was hearing a little bit more about the character and I was seeing how she was written, then it was fun…...

Syfy hosted a Q&A with "Helix" guest star Jeri Ryan and exec producer/showrunner Steve Maeda last week, and they revealed quite a bit about what's ahead now that Constance Sutton (Ryan) has arrived in the Arctic.
Things kick off with some discussion about Sutton, who she really is and her motives, and then we hear about topics ranging from the likelihood of a second season, Jeri's love of gore, how long they can keep up the series' intensity, Hatake’s obsession with Walker, the current state of genre TV, and much, much more.
If you're a fan of the show and/or Ryan (whose appearance as Ilaria's corporate "face" first occurred this past Friday night in Episode 1.07, "Survivor Zero," and will continue in future eps), you'll want to grab your morning coffee or tea and settle in for a bit.
It's President's Day; you don't have to work anyway,...

Shockers abound in this clip from tonight’s new episode of Helix – and it’s only the opening four minutes. The only reason to avoid watching it now is that it will make you yell at your computer screen in frustration that you can’t see more, instantly. Sorry. It’s what I did.
The accompanying TV spot is equally “What?!”-worthy, so check that out as well. If you, sadly, still haven’t started watching this show, then get on over to syfy.com/now/helix or to Syfy On Demand on your TV to watch the 5 that have already aired. Seriously, just don’t put it off, or you’re likely to get spoiled on the constantly churning events of this massively addictive show.

Don’t forget to check out the Helix: Access Granted site for even more excellent intrigue.

If you are one of the few cool people who have not been watching Helix, or if you are amongst the millions who have watched it and know you need to rewatch to pick up the clues you missed the first or fourth time around, here is great news: Syfy will be airing every episode (that’s five so far) tomorrow (Thursday) night starting at 6/5c.
Seriously, if you have only seen each episode once, make sure to watch this marathon; you’ll be surprised at how much you missed the first time around. Plus, as with all serialized shows, you’ll notice things in earlier episodes that you know have been expanded in later episodes. Just trust me on this and rewatch.
