Two of YouTube’s craftiest filmmakers are back in action. Two-and-a-half years after it aired a farewell live stream, Indy Mogul has returned, with original hosts Erik Beck and Justin Johnson taking control of the channel the first started back in 2007.
Indy Mogul first arrived in 2007 as one of the channels run by Next New Networks. It quickly gained a devoted audience thanks to its short films and Diy projects, which showed off Beck and Johnson’s creativity and adventurousness. In 2011, Next New Networks was acquired by Google in 2011, and in the following few years Indy Mogul’s funding dwindled. In 2013, the channel -- then hosted by Griffin Hammond and Russell Hasenauer, went off the air for good.
Or so we thought. On May 18th, 2016, Beck and Johnson posted a short video titled “We’Re Back,” in which they tease their triumphant return to Indy Mogul. Nine days later, the...

Zach King knows a thing or two about Final Cut, and thankfully he’s sharing the knowledge. People are starting to take notice of his gripping edit sequences and penchant for fast-paced VFX shots. His YouTube channel Final Cut King, once a witty blend of his last name with an amusing brand name to sell video courses and workshops on editing, is now a rising star in the innovative filmmaking circles within the world’s biggest video network. With 5.7 million total views and 37,700 subscribers, Final Cut King is on the verge of a breakout. His latest pop came in early May when King was tapped as one of the 25 winners of YouTube’s NextUp program—its first—which set the rising creator up with $35,000 and a trip out to New York City for the four-day creators camp. This week saw the release of his first collaboration project out of the NextUp program,...

Even the folks at Next New Networks were surprised just how big a hit they had on their hands just 9 months after launching their pop music parody web series The Key of Awesome. The show has now grossed over 150 million views since launching last October, with over 30 Million in just the past month. Who knew topical pop culture references with heavy teen influences would do well on YouTube? Nnn’s do-it-yourself movie network Indy Mogul decided to get into the game with a new movie parody series Rated Awesome which launched today with an send up trailer of Blade vs. Twilight dubbed “Twilight Breaking Dawn.” The concept: “What if Edward, Jacob, Bella and the rest of “Twilight” nerds had to go up against Blade the most bad ass vampire hunter?” To be sure, the re-cut/re-imagined movie trailer game is much more saturated online and particularly on YouTube. For over...

If you've seen Survival of the Dead , now available on VOD, you might be aghast at the copious amounts of CG-fueled zombie mayhem (more prevalent than Diary or Land ). It's a shame because - as I just discussed with a friend over the weekend - Romero can turn to, I'm sure, a hungry practical FX artist out there who would work on a budget and love to cut his teeth on a Romero picture. Instead, it's CG city, baby. And the results are messy. Romero recently posed a challenge to the Indy Mogul team. George challenged host Erik Beck to build a zombie bite effect for less than $50, but Erik did the effect for only $20. Check it out...

Online filmmaking network Indy Mogul is returning to its California roots—sort of. Its flagship web series, Backyard FX, the do-it-yourself indie filmmakers’ cheat sheet, announced today it has found a new host after an extensive talent search that began in early January to replace its founder and longtime centerpiece Erik Beck. Los Angeles-based filmmaker Zack Finfrock will be taking over for Beck, who will shift his focus to overseeing Indy Mogul as a network. Web series fans will recognize Finfrock’s work, most notably as part of the Streamy-nominated team that crafted the visual effects for The Crew, along with whipping up storyboard art for The Legend of Neil. Last fall Tubefilter sat down with Finfrock to chat about his own web series pilot, Emerson Wild, a monster laden throwback that stood out for its remarkably striking (and oozing) creatures. “We were overwhelmed by the strength of the 60+ video...

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
The awards ceremony takes place on April 11th 2010 and the full list of nominees is listed below with handy links...
