Syfy's "most ambitious series to date", The Expanse, is well worth a look. Here's our episode one review...
This review contains spoilers.
1.1 Dulcinea
Based on the series of novels by James S. A. Corey, the SyFy channel’s new “space opera”, The Expanse begins with a tense, slow-burning affair, culminating in a sizeable pay-off that lays the groundwork for a promising new science-fiction adaptation.
Series developers Mark Fergus and (the wonderfully named) Hawk Ostby resist the temptation many new shows succumb to: jumping out of the blocks with all guns blazing, hoping to entice viewers with a packed forty minutes of explosions, only for subsequent episodes to inevitably fail to live up to that opening salvo. Instead, The Expanse allows its audience to spend time with each primary character and location and get a feel of where this show is headed. The pacing is measured, rather than slow,...

Now the TV network named after the genre wants a bigger piece of the action. Along with debuting its new series The Expanse on Dec. 14, Syfy also premieres its stunning new miniseries Childhood’s End. In adapting Arthur C. Based on what we’ve seen, Childhood’s End should indeed be provocative. Syfy and Universal have today announced they have greenlit Blood Drive, a high-octane, over-the-top scripted series in the classic grindhouse movie tradition. Set in a near-apocalyptic future, the 13-episode series centers around La’s last good cop who is forced to join a twisted, gory cross-country death race – with cars powered by blood (Blood Car anyone?) and a dangerous femme fatale partner who sees people as fuel. Sounds a lot like Blood Drive the video game (pictured above) – but apparently this is no relation.
Blood Drive is from executive producers John Hlavin (Underworld: Awakening, The Shield) and David Straiton (Bates Motel, Hemlock Grove), who will also direct. Said Dave Howe, President, Syfy & Chiller:
This highly stylized roller coaster ride is a throwback to 1970s grindhouse cinema. With its fast-paced thrills and indie feel, Blood Drive will make an exciting and edgy addition to Syfy’s growing slate of original scripted series.

Syfy is joining with Steven Speilberg’s Amblin Television to adapt Aldous Huxley’s classic 1932 novel Brave New World into a scripted series. The project reunites the Emmy-winning team behind Syfy’s 2003 mini-series Taken.
Ranked fifth among the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th Century by Modern Library, Brave New World takes place in a world without war, poverty or disease. Though everyone is provided for, humans are given mind-altering drugs, rampant consumerism and free sex are the order of the day, and people no longer procreate. Instead, children are genetically engineered in “hatcheries.” All nonconformists are sent to “reservations” to protect the social order, until one of the “savages” decides to challenge the system.
“Brave New World is one of the most influential genre classics of all time. Its provocative vision of a future gone awry remains as powerful and as timeless as ever,” said Dave Howe, president of Syfy and Chiller.

Fresh off the news that The Magicians will go into production, Syfy now decides that it’s time to take on one of the godfathers of all sci-fi, Brave New World.
While some might wonder how that’s going to go, and if it’s actually a spectacular idea, adding Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television to the mix should put off some of the fears associated with the obvious dangers of potentially butchering one of the best books ever.
Given the slate of shows Syfy already has, and the upcoming efforts we’ve learned about recently, the network is looking to be in a very different place a year from now.
Take a look at the full press release below, and let me know what you think about this one. Is this going to be your next favorite show, or is it going to be impossible to live up to the book?...

On the heels of Animal, its most-watched original movie to date – and the SXSW 2015 premiere of its original movie The Boy – Us horror channel Chiller have announced new original content for 2015 and 2016, including its first-ever original series, Slasher, and two new original movies, Lifeforce and Siren.

Sci-fi classic Brave New World is one of those stories that Hollywood will keep trying to nail for years to come, and today brings word that the latest swing at Aldous Huxley’s 1932 novel will come courtesy of Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, which is adapting the book into a series for Syfy.
Huxley’s book centers on a world that has achieved what many believe to be utopia, without poverty, war or disease. Human reproduction is a thing of the past, with people being genetically engineered in “hatcheries.” Mind-altering drugs, sex and consumerist practices are the numerous numbing agents provided to the population so that they never question the larger issues of a society that requires conformity, until one defiant individual challenges the entire system.

I would say that you’ve got time to get reading, but if you’re going to be interested in the fact that Syfy has picked up The Magicians, you’ve probably already done the reading.
On the other hand, if the series is handled well it could easily take off like a rocket when released, so maybe this is a good time to tell you to make sure you know what everyone will be talking about.
Following Quentin Coldwater, the story will unfortunately be compared to the Harry Potter series by anyone who only gets the most cursory summary of what happens. It’s an edgier, darker spin on the general idea of going to school and learning magic really does exist, and the series of books tackle themes that are not only more relevant to adults, but in ways that create a far richer world.

Syfy announced on Monday (May 4) that it has given a series order to "The Magicians," a drama series based on Lev Grossman's best-selling series of books. Production on the 12-episode first season of "The Magicians" will begin in Vancouver in July. Most safely described as Harry Potter For Slightly More Grown-Ups -- and the TV series appears to have made the main characters a little older -- "The Magicians" stars Jason Ralph as Quentin Coldwater, a socially awkward, but highly intelligent grad student (he was a high school student in the books) who enrolls at Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy and discovers that a magical fantasy world is all around him. Stella Maeve, Hale Happleman, Arjun Gupta and Summer Bishil also star. Get ready for "12 Monkeys" X 2. Does that mean 24 monkeys? We can only hope. Syfy announced on Thursday (March 12) that "12 Monkeys" will be back for a second season in 2016. While the renewal announcement doesn't include an episode count, it does include an interesting tidbit: With current showrunner Natalie Chaidez developing Syfy's "Hunters," Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, who wrote the pilot, will be stepping up as showrunners. This is especially fun for those of us who remember Fickett from his days as a TV reporter for IGN.
