To date, only three programs throughout television history have swept the top seven Primetime Emmys categories for series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, writing and directing. The lucky three are: miniseries “Angels in America” (2004), comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” (2020) and drama series “The Crown” (2021). At the upcoming 2024 Emmys, “The Bear” is hoping to join this esteemed list — and it’s all thanks to a savvy category switcheroo from one of its fan-fave stars.
Recently the FX dramedy about a Chicago beef restaurant claimed six of the top seven Primetime Emmys for its first season: comedy series, lead actor Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, supporting actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach as restaurant manager Richard “Richie” Jerimovich, supporting actress Ayo Edebiri as sous-chef Sydney Adamu, and both writing and directing for Christopher Storer. “The Bear” was not eligible in the lead actress category, so it couldn’t win there and complete the sweep.

Emmy voters love a multi-hyphenate. From Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Ricky Gervais to Larry David and Dan and Eugene Levy; when a performer turns their hand to off-screen work and helps tell vital stories as a director, writer, producer, creator, or any combination of the above, voters pay attention.
Waller-Bridge won three Emmys for “Fleabag” in 2019 — for Best Comedy Series, Best Comedy Actress, and Best Comedy Writing. Meanwhile, Dan Levy won four Emmys in 2020 for “Schitt’s Creek,” taking home awards for Best Comedy Supporting Actor, Best Comedy Writing, Best Comedy Directing (shared with Andrew Cividino), and Best Comedy Series. He shared the latter win with his father, Eugene, who also won Best Comedy Actor. It’s a trusted tale that, time and time again, Emmy voters love. But which creatives could reap the rewards of that love this year?
Below, we’ve put together a select list of five multi-hyphenates who...

Elle Fanning could make a quick return to the Emmys lineup for her hit Hulu comedy series “The Great.” This critically acclaimed period piece was created by Tony McNamara, best known for his Oscar-nominated script for “The Favourite.” Fanning stars as the titular Catherine the Great who has to weigh up personal happiness and her country’s future in 18th Century Russia. In particular, she has to navigate a tumultuous marriage to Nicholas Hoult‘s Emperor Peter III for the benefit of her country.
While Hoult was already used to giving voice to McNamara’s words thanks to his role in the “The Favourite,” Fanning has slipped into his sardonic style with ease. She is so at home with the quick wit and jabby jibes that populates his writing. Critics praise her captivating performance that propels the show forward. Among those singing her praises:

Nicholas Hoult could do great things again with his comedy TV series “The Great.” This Hulu hit comes from “The Favourite” screenwriter Tony McNamara. The series depicts Elle Fanning as the titular Catherine the Great who, in 18th century Russia, is torn between her own happiness and the future of her country when she marries Hoult’s Emperor Peter III of Russia.
As Peter, Hoult has the same wicked playfulness he displayed in “The Favourite.” However, he ramps it up a notch — bringing together a sense of absolute fun with a dose of sardonic wit. It’s as much fun to watch him and Fanning spar as it must have been for them to act out these playful scenes.
Critics certainly took note of Hoult’s hold on the character in season three. Below, just a sampling of his rave reviews:

What if you could send your clone to be punished for your crimes?
Neon’s “Infinity Pool,” written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg (“Possessor”), stars Alexander Skarsgård as a novelist who accidentally kills a man while on vacation. Yet in this foreign land, the punishment is death: either his own, or for the right price, the death of a fabricated doppelgänger. Mia Goth also stars in the thriller, hinting at what would happen if “The White Lotus” merged with “The Purge” and “Eyes Wide Shut,” with a bit of an “Us” twist.
Per the official synopsis, while staying at an isolated island resort, James (Skarsgård) and Em (Cleopatra Coleman) are enjoying a perfect vacation of pristine beaches, exceptional staff, and soaking up the sun. But guided by the seductive and mysterious Gabi (Goth), they venture outside the resort grounds and find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror.

Four weeks ago, we heard that Infinity Pool, a new sci-fi thriller from director Brandon Cronenberg, the son of the legendary David Cronenberg, had been slapped with an Nc-17 by the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association. The reason given for that rating was “some graphic violence and sexual content”. The ratings announcement came with the note that the makers of Infinity Pool intend to appealed to the Classification and Rating Administration appeals board in an attempt to get the Nc-17 turned into an R. And apparently that appeal didn’t go their way, because it has now been announced that Infinity Pool was edited in order to receive an R rating.
The new rating announcement says that Infinity Pool was been rated R for “graphic violence, disturbing material, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and some language.” Which makes it sound even harsher than the Nc-17 cut.

As we told you last month, Antiviral and Possessor director Brandon Cronenberg‘s next is the sci-fi movie Infinity Pool for Neon and Topic Studios, which received an “Nc-17” rating from the MPA for “Some graphic violence and sexual content.” We also told you that an appeal was underway, and this week the MPA has finally handed the film an “R” rating.
The film’s previous “Nc-17” rating has been voided and the film has been re-edited a bit to achieve the “R” rating. This edited version of Infinity Pool has been rated “R” for…

The good news? It sounds like the film will remain violent and boundary-pushing!
Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

Emmy-winning comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” will cycle off Netflix in the U.S. later this year, to become available exclusively on Disney’s Hulu.
Hulu announced that it will be the dedicated subscription video on-demand home “Schitt’s Creek” in the U.S. beginning Oct. 3, 2022. The fan-favorite show, which originally aired in the U.S. on Paramount’s Pop TV, ended its six-season run in 2020.
In 2020, the series made history by sweeping all Primetime Emmy Awards comedy categories — notching the most wins in a single season for a comedy. That included lead actor and actress trophies for Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy, as well as supporting actress and actor wins for Annie Murphy and Daniel Levy. “Schitt’s Creek” also won the Emmy that year for directing for a comedy series for Andrew Cividino and Daniel Levy, as well as a writing win for Daniel Levy.

Longtime ICM Partners agent Jeff Barry has joined Range Media Partners, where he will head up the company’s international TV department.
He arrives at the management company — founded by a trove of top representatives who defected from the legacy agencies over the past two years — as a partner. He will be tasked with building out numerous Range verticals including literary and scripted studio divisions.
Barry had been with ICM since 2008, where he specialized in helping international writers, directors and actors crossover into Hollywood. Barry is one of many stalwart agents expected to find other gigs as ICM awaits a formal acquisition by CAA.
“If the last few years have taught us anything, it is that the future of television and film is international. There is a strong demand and interest in global content, and for the dynamic creators who tell these stories,” Barry said of the new gig. “Range...

Ghost Master: "Ghost Master (originally titled Gôsuto masutâ) is a Japanese horror-comedy that follows Akira Kurosawa, a nerdy assistant director working on the set of a low budget rom-com at an abandoned school. Burnt out on campy teen dramas, Akira dreams of becoming the ultimate horror master. When a conflict with the director, Atsushi Suzuki causes half the cast to strike, Akira is left in charge of the production. Ditching the scheduled project and pivoting to his own horror script, titled Ghost Master, Akira is shocked when his evil screenplay comes to life and begins possessing the cast, including the film’s star, Yuya. As a killing spree commences and the body count rises, Akira must band together with the crew and one remaining actress, Mana to stop the gruesome attacks.

Alexander Skarsgård will star in Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool,” a sci-fi thriller about a vacation that takes a twist.
Neon, the studio behind “Parasite,” will co-finance and executive produce the film alongside Topic Studios, which previously produced “Leave No Trace” and “Luce.” “Infinity Pool” comes on the heels of Skarsgård’s star turn in “Godzilla vs. Kong,” one of the few box office success stories of the pandemic era. Cronenberg recently directed the trippy horror film, “Possessor,” which Neon released.
Here’s the official logline for “Infinity Pool”: “James and Em are young, rich, in love, and on vacation. Their all-inclusive resort boasts island tours and gleaming beaches. But outside of the hotel gates waits something much more dangerous and seductive, beyond the edge of paradise.” Given Cronenberg’s out-there oeuvre, that “something” probably doesn’t involve lost travelers checks or a failure to apply sufficient sunscreen.

Last year’s 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (affectionately known as the Pandemmys because it took place during the Covid-19 pandemic), rewarded a total of 23 contenders with trophies. Shows like “Schitt’s Creek” and “Succession” and actors like Billy Crudup and Zendaya all claimed victory from the safety of their own homes. But of those 23 winners, shockingly only two are eligible to repeat at the 2021 Emmys: “RuPaul’s Drag Race” for Best Competition Program and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” for Best Variety Talk Series. And they’ll both probably win again.
So, what gives? Why are there so many ineligible shows this time around? It’s a mixture of some programs having ended last year and the coronavirus pandemic halting production on others. “Schitt’s Creek” accounted for all seven of the primetime comedy categories, so that means all of those are up for grabs this year. The final season of “Schitt’s Creek” finished airing on Pop TV months ago, but fans without access to the cable channel have waited with bated breath to see those final episodes that just swept the 2020 Emmy Awards. Fortunately, anyone eager to see how the show ends, relive the goofy glory of all six seasons, or discover it for the very first time will have not one, not two, but three ways to catch up with the series soon.
On October 2, “Schitt’s Creek” will begin airing in its entirety on Comedy Central. Starting with the series premiere, a marathon of five episodes will air every Friday night from 8:00pm to 10:30pm Edt. “Schitt’s Creek” produced 80 episodes over its six-season run, so if Comedy Central sticks to this release schedule, you’ll be able to watch every episode in 16 weeks’ time.

Emmy producers went to great lengths to simulate a true winning moment in the time of Covid-19, sending presenters decked out in tuxedo hazmat suits to every nominee’s home or location of their choosing to deliver statuettes to the winners live on Sunday. And don’t think they skimped out — seven Emmys were shipped to Canada in case “Schitt’s Creek” won all seven comedy categories, which, well, it did.
“Last week, I got a FedEx delivery of all seven trophies to my house. And then I was lucky because I didn’t have to send a single Emmy back,” Kathleen Ryan, a Toronto-based event producer who was hired to be the “Schitt’s” trophy presenter at its Covid-safe, socially distanced party, told “Toronto Life.” (We already know what happens when you lose.)

We've been on the edge of our seats since the 2020 Emmy nominations were announced in July. This year, the Emmys went virtual, opting to have Jimmy Kimmel host from the Staples Center in downtown LA while foregoing a traditional red carpet on Sunday night. In addition to fun cast reunions and hilarious behind-the-scenes moments, there were also some historic wins. Schitt's Creek nabbed nine Emmys out of 15 nominations for its sixth and final season, while Zendaya received her first-ever Emmy win for Euphoria, making her the youngest actress to win in the category. Ron Cephas Jones and Jasmine Cephas Jones also made history as the first father-daughter duo to win Emmys in the same year. Keep reading for the full list of winners.

The 2020 Emmys are taking place remotely this year, but the Schitt's Creek team found a way to be together. A handful of the show's cast and crew came together at an Emmys viewing party, but don't worry - they're staying safe!
According to Entertainment Weekly,
some of the cast and crew gathered
at an event space in Toronto for a Covid guideline-compliant viewing party. Along with the show's four nominated actors - Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Dan Levy, and Annie Murphy - actors Noah Reid (Patrick) and Karen Robinson (Ronnie) were in attendance, plus director Andrew Cividino and some of the show's executive producers. All attendees are adhering to Ontario's guidelines, most importantly by isolating since getting to the area and testing negative for coronavirus.
The Schitt's Creek team also set a great example by wearing masks at their viewing party, except to give acceptance speeches - of which there were many!

The 2020 Emmys were bound to be full of surprises due to its socially distanced ceremony, and they did not disappoint. There were crazy cameos from Emmy Awards winners (and an alpaca). There was a history making sweep. There were underdogs that toppled industry veterans. Keep reading below for the five most shocking moments of the 72nd annual Emmy Awards.
Jennifer Aniston puts out a fire
During a staged bit about Covid-19 safety practices, host Jimmy Kimmel sanitized the envelope for Comedy Lead Actress before tossing it in a trash bin and lighting it on fire. Jennifer Aniston was handed a fire extinguisher to put out the flame. That was planned. Not planned was the fire’s determination to keep on burning. It sprouted anew as Kimmel reached in to grab the envelope. Aniston looked alarmed but soon donned the look of a steely action star as she attacked the fire like a pro.

Let’s face it, the 2020 Emmys was a Schitt’s show. The virtual edition of TV’s Biggest Night saw an actual sweep of the comedy categories Pop TV’s now-ended Schitt’s Creek, which won seven trophies including Outstanding Comedy Series.

Updated with backstage video: Right out of the gate Schitt’s Creek slayed the Emmy competition, sweeping all seven comedy categories. This marks the first show in the history of the Emmys to do so. The show’s creators and stars Dan Levy and Eugene Levy were joined by their fellow stars Catherine O’Hara, Annie Murphy, Noah Reid, Karen Robinson as well as director Andrew Cividino to talk about making history and dominating Sunday night’s ceremony.
“It is absolutely incredible,” said Dan Levy at the virtual backstage of the Emmys. “I think my dad said it best tonight — it feels like a dream you don’t want to wake up from.”
He laughs with overwhelming joy adding, “It still feels very strange but what an absolutely unbelievable way to end the series… we are absolutely thrilled.”

The Emmys turned into a massive Schitt’s sweep for “Schitt’s Creek” on Sunday night, and backstage, creator Daniel Levy discussed the potential for a “Schitt’s Creek” movie.
“To be honest this is the best way we could have ever ended the show,” Levy began, before changing tack to say that a movie isn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility. “If there is an idea that pops into my head it has to be really freaking good because this is a nice way to say goodbye. Fingers crossed we get a nice idea popping into our head soon….I would love to work with these people again.”
Levy and the entire main cast were gathered together in Canada to celebrate a historic night for the Pop TV show, and presided over a raucous backstage Q&a.

It was a “Schitt” show at the Primetime Emmy Awards. “Schitt’s Creek” won all seven comedy categories on Sunday in an unprecedented sweep: comedy series, actress for Catherine O’Hara, actor for Eugene Levy, supporting actor for Daniel Levy, supporting actress for Annie Murphy, writing for Daniel Levy, and directing for Daniel Levy and Andrew Cividino. Including its casting and costume wins at the Creative Arts Awards, its total haul this year — for its final season — is nine. No wonder awards season is Moira Rose’s favorite.
Here are all the ways “Schitt’s” entered the Emmy record books.
1. It’s the most awarded comedy in a single year
“Schitt’s Creek’s” nine victories surpassed the eight that “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” took home the past two years. No show had ever won all seven comedy categories at the main ceremony before.
2. It’s the first comedy and second show...

Pour yourself a glass of Moira rosé: Pop’s “Schitt’s Creek” won the comedy series Emmy at the 72nd Annual Primetime Awards.
With the win, the show swept all of the major comedy categories at this year’s Emmys. Stars Eugene Levy, Daniel Levy, Catherine O’Hara, and Annie Murphy all won for acting in the show, while Daniel also won for writing and directing, sharing the latter with Andrew Cividino. This means “Schitt’s Creek” is the first series to win every major comedy series award.
The final season was full of high-highs for the beloved Rose family: David’s (Levy) wedding, Alexis (Murphy) striking out on her own, Moira’s (O’Hara) movie success and Johnny’s (Levy) new business franchise. Its Emmy success kept those highs going. Now the series has picked up its first-ever and biggest Emmy Award.

That sweep was unprecedented. It was the first comedy series ever to win all lead and supporting awards in a single year. That also tied it with “Saturday Night Live” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for the most comedy acting wins in a single year.
