Look, you can sigh in relief that Colton Cumbie‘s exit from the show last week spared us a season’s worth of his humiliating antics. Sure. But you also had to wonder if Colton was secretly the only exciting cast member, the only castaway willing to piss off acquaintances, start fights, and find the Zen in chaos. Well, get this: Since Colton left, everyone else on the show is suddenly meaner. Not kidding! It’s balanced out nicely. Almost poetically. It’s reality TV Zen, actually.
We’ve got a long way to go before this one-sided battle between the Galang (which always makes me think of Evonne Goolagong Cawley when Jeff says it since I like having a reason to remember Chris Evert‘s subtle rage) and Tadhana tribes is over. But if Blood Vs. Water is anything like Survivor: Philippines, the surviving members of the fast-dwindling Tadhana...

The Amazing Race Review, Season 21, Episode 6
“Get Your Sexy On”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
In a fast-paced competition like The Amazing Race, conventional wisdom might suggest that it’s wise to avoid getting stuck with the pack. However, the chaos and confusion actually make this false thinking in most cases. Teams that believe they can outperform the others in challenges should want to stay with the group. This approach ensures that they’re following the right path and aren’t venturing into unknown territory. There are rare exceptions where a team is so powerful that they can grab a big lead and force others to follow. Season five’s Colin and Christie are a good example of this approach. They realized that few teams could stay with them and took charge to win most of the legs. On the other hand, there are less skillful players that...

The Amazing Race Review, Season 20, Episode 5,
“Uglier Than a Mud Rail Fence”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
There’s no simple formula to determine which teams will dominate The Amazing Race. It takes a certain level of physical strength to handle the challenges, but plenty of superior athletes have failed in early legs. There are also countless examples from past seasons of older and less agile contestants who’ve thrived. Arguably the most dominant team not to win is Season Five’s Colin and Christie, who won six legs but ultimately finished second. They seemed destined to take the top prize, but were passed near the end by Chip and Kim, a couple in their 40s who barely avoided elimination in the first three episodes. There’s so much luck involved in this contest that very few teams can avoid major problems.

Dear Lance,
Almost always, there's a team on The Amazing Race that we all love to hate. I won't claim to know everyone, but I'll think of names at the top of my head. Jonathan and Victoria? Ugh. Colin and Christie? Ugh. The earliest I can remember, Flo and Zach--well, I only hated Flo, so I've Got a half-ugh for that. Same goes for Terence and Sarah.
I'm sure you know where I'm going here, right?...

So in last Sunday’s much-discussed episode of Brothers & Sisters, Kevin and Scotty considered having a threeway with Kevin’s oh-so-forward ex, Chad.
I didn’t mind that Kevin and Scotty ultimately decided not to go through with it – that seems to fit their characters, after all.
But I was shocked that the writers managed to do a whole storyline about a gay couple considering whether or not to have a threeway … without ever saying a single interesting thing about a gay couple considering whether or not to have a threeway!
No matter. It’s still enough of an excuse to declare this the “Threeway Edition” of B.G.W.E!
Incest, “Fun Buddies,” And Teabagging, Oh My!
Along with Brothers & Sisters’ potential threeway, the big news last week was when easily-manipulated Fox viewers decided to protest the fact that President Obama has already cut taxes for most taxpayers (while...

Best.Gay.Week.Ever? I don't think so. First, there was that Amazon.com kerfuffle where the online merchant began treating almost all books dealing with gay subject matter (even purely academic ones) as adult content — excluding many very worthy titles from their sales rankings system and standard searches.
One sad result? When you type in "homosexuality" as a search on Amazon, the results are skewed dramatically toward crap like this:
(Here's my bit of unsolicited advice to Amazon shoppers who might be interested in A Parent's Guide to Preventing Homosexuality: "Do everyone a favor and don't have kids!")
So what's going on here? On the surface, it sure looked like Amazon had adopted some sort of conservative policy to effectively bury positive gay representation on their site.
But then company spokespersons variously blamed it on a computer "glitch," and a "ham-fisted cataloging error" and made assurances they were working on a fix.

The journey in "The Amazing Race" 14 continues with a visit to India. Departing first at midnight from Novosibirsk, Siberia are Margie and Luke who are told to fly to Jaipur, India via Moscow. Behind them are, in respective order, Tammy and Victor; Jamie and Cara; Mel and Mike; Mark and Michael; Kisha and Jen; and Jodi and Christie who were saved by non-elimination round last week.
The flight schedule enable all of them to depart at the same time. Arriving in Moscow, they travel to New Delhi before then start the race in Jaipur. The teams must find a tree that has the name of a village on it. Mel and Mike have a jolt of shock when the cab that has their belongings in the trunk, drive out of their sight. The taxi eventually returns and the driver promises to drive really fast. The teams are troubled with the...

"She's a Little Scared of Stick, But I Think She'll Be Ok!", the fifth episode in "The Amazing Race" 14 is the first non-elimination leg. The teams are kept intact at 7, with flight attendants Christie and Jodi checking in the last. Ironically, they were the first team to arrive last week.
Christie and Jodi embarked from The Theater of Musical Comedy around noon, taking a Trans-Siberian Railroad to Novosibirsk. Following behind them were Kisha and Jen who found out that the train won't leave until 10 P.M. that night. Thus all team will be departing at the same time.
In the morning they arrived and a detour should be performed. The teams must choose between Russian Bride or Russian Snow Plow. In the former, teams must drive an ancient car called Lada, through a training course to an apartment complex while in the latter, they must find a bride in an...

Thus spoke the prophet Mike White, "Let the last become first and let the first become last." We've now had two consecutive topsy-turvy episodes on "The Amazing Race." Last week, the teams got jumbled in unexpected ways thanks to a series of missed flight connections in Moscow, leaving perennial near-cellar-dwellers Jodi & Christie and Kisha & Jen at the top of the pack. We never found out how far ahead last week's winning teams actually were, because a long delay before a train ride into the depths of Siberia offered an equalizer and prompted Mike's comment. That, in turn, prompted Mel...

One more team falls down in the 14th edition of "The Amazing Race". Married couple Linda and Steve end up as the last one to check in, in the second leg of the race and therefore, eliminated. They join Preston and Jennifer who have already been cast away in the elimination station, a utility provided for the eliminated teams to hinder spoilers.
In the Roadblock task, Linda made a grave mistake when she was supposed to walk down the mountain. While the others made it through, she got lost and asked someone to take her back up the mountain. This cost her lots of time which resulted in them checking in the last. Steve said that he doesn't blame Linda for taking the wrong path and they stood up for their love despite the elimination.
Tammy and Victor hit the pit stop first and earned hybrid go-karts, followed by, in respective order,...

Television Rating: 4.5/5.0 Chicago – For six years there has been an Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Competition Program and for every one of those years the same show has walked home with the trophy, beating series like “Project Runway,” “Survivor,” and “American Idol”. That show is “The Amazing Race”. Based on the strength of the premiere, it seems likely the producers of this CBS mainstay should probably make room for Emmy #7.
“The Amazing Race” could be used in classrooms to dissect what separates the good reality TV from the bad. Yes, hosts are important and Phil Keoghan is one of the best. And concept is key. But a competition shows lives and dies on two things - casting and editing, both of which are incredibly strong on “The Amazing Race”.
