Kathleen Hanna sings lead vocals on a new song for the first time in nearly five years with “Mirrorball,” the first single from the upcoming benefit album Land Trust: Benefit for North East Farmers of Color.
The self-released LP, out June 3 via Bandcamp, is the brainchild of Bikini Kill guitarist Erica Dawn Lyle and drum tech Vice Cooler (also of the Raincoats), with the pair penning Land Trust’s music during the pandemic. The quarantine also allowed them to recruit an all-star guestlist — including Hanna, Kim Gordon, the Linda Lindas,...

In a way, there are two Deerhoofs: the killer rock band and the anything-goes experimental collective. For around 25 years, they’ve been churning out albums full of skewed yet tuneful songs (see the great new Future Teenage Cave Artists). Alongside that, together and separately, the members have joined forces with avant-garde luminaries from Ensemble Dal Niente to Matana Roberts and Anthony Braxton. On an upcoming Bandcamp-only release — To Be Surrounded By Beautiful, Curious, Breathing, Laughing Flesh Is Enough, a title borrowed from Walt Whitman — we’ll get to hear a little of both,...

Avant-garde indie stalwarts Deerhoof unveiled a boisterous new track, “‘Farewell’ Symphony” from their upcoming album, Future Teenage Cave Artists, out May 29th via Joyful Noise Recordings.
“‘Farewell’ Symphony” is a frenetic cut, but Deerhoof expertly control the chaos as clattering drums, grizzly guitar riffs and singer Satomi Matsuzaki’s airy vocals combine into a mesmerizing freakout. The song borrows its title from Franz Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 45, also known as the “Farewell” Symphony, and Deerhoof’s video for their track is a supercut of six performances of the original “Farewell” Symphony’s final movement,...

Well, that was fast. The Flaming Lips announced they were doing a six-hour song last month, and now it's here! We're only about one-sixth of the way through "I Found a Star On the Ground," but so far it's sounding as experimental as you would expect from a six-hour song. We can tell you that the words "I Found a Star on the Ground' are indeed in the song, and they are first spoken around the 64-minute point. We can also tell you that at the 3:15 point, someone who sounds suspiciously like Deerhoof's Satomi Matsuzaki starts to sing.
The Flaming Lips previously stated that anyone could enjoy one second of fame if they paid $100 to have their name included in the song. The money would then be donated to the Central Oklahoma Humane Society and the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma. If you're one of those people,...
