"I never told her about you." "That was cowardly of you." Oscilloscope Labs has unveiled an official trailer for Love Life, an emotional Japanese drama that first premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival last year. It will be playing in select art house theaters in the US starting later in August, if anyone is curious about watching. Taeko and her new husband Jiro are living a simple life with her young son Keita, when a tragic accident brings the boy's long-lost father, Park, back into her life. To cope with her pain and guilt, Taeko throws herself into helping Park, who is also deaf and currently homeless. With nuanced performances and craftsmanship, Love Life is a melodramatic and moving meditation on grief and acceptance. The film stars Win Morisaki, Fumino Kimura, and Tomorô Taguchi. I watched this in Venice and while I do think the performances are excellent, the rest...

The West has a tendency to lump horror from East and Southeast Asia into one basic but limiting category. Because of this, someone might write off an entire continent’s contributions to the genre based solely on a few popular movies with similar plots and executions. However, Eric Khoo’s series Folklore highlights — not to mention celebrates — the differences that make each episode’s depicted culture so unique. That’s not to say there isn’t an overall theme here. This anthology show emphasizes a commonality among its stories; every tale of terror draws from the supernatural. More specifically, each self-contained episode is based on a local custom, myth or superstition. And as the second season demonstrates with both flair and potency, defying the past and ignoring tradition has serious consequences.
Like other anthology series, there is no specific order when watching the episodes. Skipping around is surely an option,...

Following in the footsteps of “Bento Harassment”, Renpei Tsukamoto deals with another dysfunctional family and the ways they could potentially resolve their issues, retaining the tour guide of the rural area element, while switching the concept of Bento with rally.
“My Father’s Tracks” is screening at Asian Pop-up Cinema
The protagonist of the story is Taiga Kitamura, a 29-year-old whose efforts to become an actor in Tokyo have hit a wall, as his manager claims that his performances lack soul. At the same time, the young man has already lost his mother when he was young, essentially blaming his father, whose career in rally has taken up most of his time, neglecting him, his brother, and their mother. Neither of the two siblings talk to him anymore, and his pleas for Taiga to visit the rural area where he runs a car repair shop are met with denial, even dismissal on occasion.

It is not very common for a festival to program a 10-episode series, but that is exactly what San Diego Asian Film Festival did, screening the whole “The Real Thing”, Fukada’s adaptation of Mochiru Hoshisato’s comic book. An edited down version of the Nagoya TVproduction screened in Japan in October, while the film was also shown in Cannes and Tokyo Film Festival.
“The Real Thing” is screening at Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema
The script focuses on Tsuji, a 30-year-old salaryman who works for a toy company, while retaining two relationships with colleagues, one a more serious one, with Naoko, his higher up in the company, and one more “flimsical”, with Minako, a young employee. The latter is heads over heels for him but he is more invested to Naoko, who shares his apartment frequently and actually knows about his other affair. One fateful night, however,...

Movies are the best liars money can buy, and the notion of love at first sight might be their greatest fib. Blame the effortless charmers of Classic Hollywood who perfected flirtatious glances, knowing smiles, and batting of the eyes in order to con us into thinking their lives could be ours. What these fantasies ultimately tell us is that new romance could (and should) lead to salvation, the hope for a happy life that settles in nicely with societal expectations.
With its massive runtime, circular story, and repetitive depiction of self-destructiveness, Kôji Fukada’s The Real Thing is the very antithesis to the classic meet-cute scenario. Based on Mochiru Hoshisato’s graphic novel, it was originally produced for Japanese television. The film has been slightly trimmed and spliced together for theatrical audiences at a still-hefty 232 minutes. Thus some of the eccentric charm that made it such a masterpiece of the serial format has vanished.

After landing on our radars with the carefully observed family drama Harmonium, Koji Fukada’s A Girl Missing received a U.S. release from Film Movement last summer and now the distributor has picked up the Japanese auteur’s latest project, the whopping 232-minute drama The Real Thing. Ahead of a June 4 release for the Cannes 2020 selection, we’re pleased to debut the new trailer. While it’ll arrive in Virtual Cinemas and VOD, if you’re in Los Angeles, the 237-minute television version will have its theatrical premiere on June 4-6 at Acropolis Cinema.
An adaptation of Mochiru Hoshisato’s manga, the film follows a floundering toy salesman who rescues a beguiling woman whose car was stuck on the train tracks. She then inadvertently whisks him into an epic series of misadventures that turn his life upside down. While his once humdrum routine was already complicated by two female co-workers,...

"The entire ocean has begun moving." GKids has unveiled an official Us trailer for the Japanese anime film titled Children of the Sea, which has been playing at a few film festivals last year (after initially opening in Japan in the summer). The story involves a young girl named Ruka who is drawn into a mystery involving sealife around the world, in which two mysterious water-connected boys are involved. Of course, she falls in love with one of them. Starring the voices of Mana Ashida, Hiiro Ishibashi, Seishû Uragami, and Win Morisaki in the original version. Ready Player One burst out of nowhere and has become a beloved novel, already taught in schools around the country, making Ernest Cline a hero in the very pop culture the novel celebrates. He took his personal Golden Age and wrote an adventure celebrating the icons of the late 1970s and 1980s, the era when computers and video games changed the world, ushering in the Age of the Geek.
Of course it was going to be turned into a movie but the question is could any film essentially capture the brio of the novel, and could anyone secure all the rights necessary to populate the film with the very icons required to make the virtual world of the Oasis plausible? When Warner Bros. won the bidding war, they wisely turned it over to the one man whose name alone would help secure those rights as well as make a faithful film: Steven Spielberg.

Lifelong gaming fan Steven Spielberg goes all-in for motion capture, with much different results than The Adventures of Tintin. It’s an ode to 1980s videogame fads and pop culture that could be re-titled ‘Astounding Adventures in Licensing.’ It’s Star Wars, Tron and Avatar mashed together for young teens, and more interesting than it ought to be.

MTV has unveiled nominations for the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards, and it looks like Oscar Best Picture winner The Shape of Water and Darkest Hour were totally shut out. However, the pop culture phenomenon known as Black Panther clawed its way to the top with seven nominations. On the television side, Netflix’s Stranger Things came out of the upside down to nab a leading six nominations.
The ceremony is set for June 18 at the Barker Hangar in Los Angeles to be hosted by stand-up comedian and Girls Trip breakout Tiffany Haddish (also a nominee this year for Best Comedic Performance). Until last year, the annual ceremony was known as the MTV Movie Awards. Now, the event has gone the Golden Globes route by including television series. And in an effort to challenge the status quo and make sure everyone know this is a “woke” awards show, the ceremony features gender-neutral categories.

Well, if ya’ can’t beat em’, join em’. Or exploit em’. And “piggy-back” on em’. An old adage, but that’s been the thinking of the movie studios whenever they’re threatened by other forms of entertainment. Too many folks are staying at home, listening to the radio, rather than filling the movie houses? Turn some of the big radio stars into movie stars (as with Jack Benny and Bob Hope) and make some films based on the popular radio series (as Columbia did with Blondie, which was based on the still-running newspaper comic strip). And what supplanted the radio as the preferred home-based entertainment? Television, adding visuals to keep the “bijou” neighborhood theatres empty. This time the studios offered gimmicks and enhancements that the then tiny screens couldn’t match: 3D, stereophonic sound, and Cinemascope, which lead to Cinerama, not to mention the tricks and tools spearheaded by...

Anyone who read the novel Ready Player One knew that it both would make for a fun movie and also would be really hard to adapt. Jam packed with pop culture references and dense with callbacks, it could be overwhelming and one note in the wrong hands. Enter Steven Spielberg. This week, Ready Player One hits theaters and represents Spielberg having a ton of fun. He was the perfect choice to adapt Ernest Cline’s novel, elevating the enjoyable source material into a work of pop art. This is the most fun that any film has been so far in 2018. You’re watching a master at work, one who is loving every moment of this movie too. Trust me when I say, it shows. It’s an absolute blast. This epic takes place in the future, after society has come down a few pegs. Most people spend their free time getting away from it all,...

We discussed with the pair the casting process and what it meant to them to be given a role of this nature – as well as how surreal it still is seeing their face up on the big screen. We also asked what their avatar name would be if they were to play in the Oasis, while Morisaki tells us which video game he excels at best.
Meanwhile Zhao tells us if acting is what he’d now like to do for a living, and Morisaki – a famous singer in Japan – explains whether he plans to continue mixing the two as he progresses in his career.

Less than a week before opening, Ready Player One welcomed the fanboys and fangirls of Wondercon into the world created by author Ernest Cline. The author was joined at the confab by screenwriter Zak Penn, Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Lena Waithe, Ben Mendelsohn, Philip Zhao, and Win Morisaki to talk about the film, but it was mostly a Spielbergian lovefest as they honored the legendary filmmaker whose past films flowed through the veins of this futuristic adventure. I'm really excited and curious to see how this movie is received by audiences. I really hope that it succeeds. I personally thought it was an amazing film and it's one I'll probably watch over and over again in the theater.
The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the Oasis, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first...

An affectionate ode to ‘70s and ‘80s pop culture wrapped in a bold vision of a future where reality and unreality are no longer binary concepts, or an insufferable procession of cultural name-drops revelling unquestioningly in the echo-chamber of nostalgia? However you view Ernest Cline’s 2011 debut novel Ready Player One, it’s undoubtedly an impressive piece of world-building. And if you’re going to choose a filmmaker to realise that vision, you could do worse than Steven Spielberg. (I mean, he already tarted up a pretty limited novel by the name of Jaws…)
Cline’s text doesn’t admit to much of ‘80s produce being tacky and/or downright terrible, but that’s the point: the kids of 2044 are atavistically absorbing the inner joy of an old,...

Warner Bros. have released over 50 new images from Ready Player One, showcasing Steven Spielberg‘s return to blockbuster filmmaking. Based on the Earnest Kline novel of the same name, Ready Player One follows Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) as he navigates a virtual reality world dubbed “The Oasis” in search of Special “easter eggs” that will grant the user full control over the virtual environment. Ironically enough, the film was made using a combination of Vr and Motion Capture technology. Considering that the film is loaded with fourth-wall breaking easter-eggs, it will be interesting to see how Spielberg, along with long-time cinematographer Janusz Kaminski will handle the self- reverential nature of the source material.
Regardless, the screenplay Ready Player One was written by Cline and Zak Penn, and the film also stars Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg, T.J. Miller, Philip Zhao, Win Morisaki, and Hannah John-Kamen.

This evening the capital was visited by cinema royalty in the form of Steven Spielberg, as he and his cast walked the blue carpet for the European Premiere of Ready Player One. It is an unashamed 80s geek fest, perfect for Mr. Spielberg who adapted it from Ernest Cline’s best-selling book.
The film stars Tye Sheridan, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Rylance, Olivia Cooke, Simon Pegg, T.J. Miller, Lena Waithe, Philip Zhao, Win Morisaki, Hannah John-Kamen, Susan Lynch, and Ralph Ineson.

Opening on Friday, March 29 is Warner Bros. Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s Ready Player One. In the Vanity Fair review, Joanna Robinson says Steven Spielberg’s latest film, “is in every way a spiritual ode to the boy’s adventure genre he made so popular in the 80s. There is a heart beating at the center of The Goonies, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, and more—but in Ready Player One, audiences will instead find a gleaming, digital, golden Easter egg.”
From filmmaker Steven Spielberg comes the action adventure Ready Player One, based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name, which has become a worldwide phenomenon. In the year 2045, the real world is a harsh place. The only time Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) truly feels alive is when he escapes to the Oasis, an immersive virtual universe where most of humanity spend their days. In the Oasis,...

Steven Spielberg‘s long awaited adaptation of Ready Player One is less than two weeks away, and the film’s marketing blitz seems to be in full effect. Although Ready Player One recently saw it’s seemingly final trailer just a few days ago, there was one glaring omission that I completely missed: the lack of John Williams music. The film will mark only the second time in Spielberg’s illustrious career that Williams will not have scored one of his films.
Stepping in for Williams on this film is Alan Sylvestri, a long-time collaborator of Spielberg’s–but never on a film that he’s directed. This is surprising, considering that Silvesrri has been a mainstay of the Amblin family, composing scores for Back to the Future and Who Framed Rodger Rabbit?, as well as more recent scores such as the now-iconic Avengers theme.
