Sf Studios is joining forces with Antti J. Jokinen’s leading Finnish production banner Cinematic Inc. to develop and produce the animated feature “Comet in Moominland” and “When the Doves Disappeared,” adapted from Sofi Oksanen’s bestseller.
“Comet in Moominland” and “When the Doves Disappeared” are being made by both companies as part of a five-picture deal. Sf Studios and Cinematic Inc. are already working together on the ambitious action thriller franchise “Omerta” which comprises of two feature films represented in international markets by Reinvent Studios, and a series that will premiere on C More, the Swedish streamer.

As it continues to expand its global profile, Nordic major Sf Studios is ramping up its U.K. operations with high-profile new hires and is developing “Don’t Move,” an English-language survival thriller project to be directed by Scandinavian up-and-comer Alain Darborg (“Alex”).
Sf Studios, which celebrated its 100th anniversary last year, stepped into English-Language moviemaking with “Borg McEnroe,” starring Shia Labeouf, and most recently with “Horizon Line,” which is now in post and has been sold nearly worldwide by Stx.

At an event held today in Berlin, Scandi powerhouse Sf Studios revealed that it has boosted its UK office with two executive hires as it looks to increase its output of English Language film and TV projects.
Joining the company are Sudie Smyth as VP Production UK & International, and Indy Datta as VP Legal & Business Affairs UK & International.
Smyth was previously Head of Production at Pinewood Pictures, and more recently worked at European Film Bonds as a completion guarantor on titles including How To Guild A Girl and Wild Rose. Datta is an established lawyer who has worked producers, distributors, broadcasters and financiers.
The pair will report directly to Fredrik Wikström Nicastro, the company’s Stockholm-based Senior Vice President International Production, and work closely with Kate Myers, VP Development UK & international, who heads up the London office.

Antti J. Jokinen’s “Purge,” Finland’s official Oscar entry, is based on the widely translated novel and play of the same title by Estonian-Finnish author Sofi Oksanen. The film alternates between two different yet interconnected stories set in rural Estonia: a young prostitute on the run from the Russian mafia in the early 1990s, and a village woman battling personal and socio-political demons during the mid-century Soviet occupation. We first see prostitute Zara (Amanda Pilke) running through the damp night and collapsing in front of the backwoods cabin owned by Aliide (Liisi Tandefelt), a reclusive old woman with a tough-as-nails face and a strong distrust for her scantily dressed surprise visitor. Through a series of flashbacks we learn that Zara was abducted by ultra-violent Russian sex traffickers, and subsequently escaped her domineering pimp. Entering the Best Foreign-Language submission fray is "Purge," Finland's official entry for the 2013 Oscars. The film beat out 35 other local entries, and is currently topping Finland's box office charts with a $923K haul. "Purge" is directed by Antti Jokinen, adapted from the internationally bestselling novel of the same title by Sofi Oksanen, which follows two women from different eras (one a 1990s Russian sex slave with more than a hint of Lisbeth Salander, the other a farm worker living in 1950s Soviet-occupied Estonia) connected by a disturbing throughline.
