ReviewNivin Pauly-Asif Ali starrer can be viewed as a political commentary. Unfortunately, the film does not make it easy for the viewer to analyse that politics.Lakshmi PriyaImage credit: YouTube/ 123MusixMahaveera Ugrasena Maharajavu Thirumanassu, a mighty 18th century king with a penchant for women, is in an unfortunate predicament. ReviewThough director M Padmakumar comes to his element in some scenes in the second half of the film, the cliché-ridden first half is likely to have already drained you out by then.Fahir MaithuttySuraj Venjaramoodu as Solomon in Pathaam Valavu | Credit: YouTubeWhen M Padmakumar's Joseph released in 2018, it had come as a pleasant surprise. A sleeper hit, the film also gave a big boost to the career of actor Joju George. Pathaam Valavu is Padmakumar's attempt to return to the crime drama genre after the debacle of Mamangam. The result, however, is rather underwhelming when compared to Joseph. Pathaam Valavu begins with Sub Inspector Sethu (Indrajith) and his fellow officers on the lookout for a jail inmate named Solomon (Suraj Venjaramoodu), who has absconded at the end of his parole. Sethu and his men soon find and arrest Solomon. But on the way back down the hill, there is a...

ReviewActors including Vinay Forrt and Siju Wilson try their best but there’s nothing much they can do when the writing leaves a lot to be desired.CrisA village setting, some tunes of rural flavour, some paddy fields, a toddy shop and villagers who know each other so well. Sounds every bit a Sathyan Anthikad movie of the 1990s but it is not. Perhaps inspired by the veteran director, newcomer Manoj Nair has decided to use those same settings and even the same year, nearly three decades later, for his debut Vaarthakal Ithuvare. The making itself, however, has absolutely no semblance to the old, adored village-based movies. Manoj’s film is a poor version of it, with a very weak script. MollywoodSome of these character actors have played the hero or heroine in some films but more often than not, they are cast as friend or sibling to the main lead. CrisFor a funny conversation at the dining table, a tit for tat in the kitchen, a word of advice and confessions, film scripts place next to the central characters, a sibling or else a friend. Most of these friend and sibling characters are crucial when there is a story to be built or a point to be made, but slowly fade into the background and don't take the attention away from the heroes and heroines they are so attached to. Malayalam cinema has always had a habit of entrusting a few regular faces with these roles. MollywoodDirector Madhupal shows his brilliance in characterisation and pace, putting together a thriller with memorable performances from Tovino Thomas and Nimisha Sajayan.CrisWhen the movie begins and the titles roll on the screen, the name – Oru Kuprasidha Payyan – gets translated to 'A Notorious Boy.' One hundred and forty four minutes later, when the movie gets over, it is still not clear how the title fits. Tovino Thomas playing the central character and presumably the ‘Kuprasidha payyan’ is anything but notorious. Then again, that’s the image the police investigating a murder tries to give him, when they write his name down as the accused and take him to court. Director Madhupal gives you a rightly-paced thriller that turns into a court room drama in the second half, without a lot of surprises or nerve-chilling scenes. However, the narrative unravels smoothly, enjoyably, and with quite a few points to appreciate...

MollywoodDileep is stiff in the second half, but is convincing as crooked Kammaran, while Siddharth is a fine fit for Othenan. Fahir Maithutty“History is a set of lies agreed upon - Napoleon Bonaparte”. This appears on the screen as the closing credits of Kammara Sambhavam starts rolling. What you read in books or watch on screen about your real life heroes - Are they always true? Or were they twisted so that you would adore and admire the protagonist? This forms the crux of Murali Gopi’s script in Kammara Sambhavam. It is an interesting concept as it quickly makes you re-think the impact some of the great biographical films had left on you. The intentions of Murali Gopi’s script are right but it falters as a whole, because the lengthy film (3 hours 2 minutes) becomes tiresome when you realise where it’s heading. A set of producers (Vijayaraghavan, Sudheer Karamana, Baiju and Vinay Forrt) and director Pulikeshi (Bobby Simha) approach Kammaran Nambiar (Dileep), an old man and Indian Liberation Party member to make a movie on his life. What Kammaran tells Pulikeshi about his early life back in 1945 in a village named Amrutha Samudhram and how Pulikeshi makes it into a film forms the storyline of Kammara Sambhavam. Murali Gopi ‘the writer’ is in fine form in the first half when he etches out the characters well. He succeeds in bringing out the contrast in the ideologies of his protagonists. Kammaran, a medical practitioner is an opportunist and wouldn't mind treading the path of treachery to accomplish what he wants. Othenan, (played by Siddharth) on the other hand, believes in the principle - “You don't need to live long, just make sure you don’t bow down your head as long as you breathe”. It is a nice touch to connect various historic events like the Battle of Imphal, the deaths of Hitler and Subhash Chandra Bose and Japan’s fall in World War II to Kammaran and Othenan’s stories. The film's pre-interval sequence of around 20 minutes is its best portion as all the characters, who appeared so far are finely connected in the narrative with a twist and turn for everyone. But Kammara Sambhavam’s big problem is the second half when the flashback ends and you are brought back to the present day. Murali Gopi tries to mock many films by poking fun at how the songs, stunts and punch scenes are picturised. Mani Ratnam’s Iruvar isn’t spared either with the film taking a dig at the lyrics of Ayirathil Oruvan. But it all falls flat because the script just stalls over here. Rathish Ambat impresses in his debut as director when the script supports him in the first half, but equally fails when the writing lets him down in the second half. Captured in a few minutes, the Battle of Imphal is shot wonderfully. Cinematography (Sunil Ks) and art direction immensely help Rathish to take the film to the pre-Independence era. Gopi Sundar's background score is effective only in parts. Dileep appears in various avatars. He is stiff in the bearded, mass look in the second half, but gives a convincing performance as the meek but crooked Kammaran in first half. The actor is at his hilarious best in a scene when he learns about the Japanese defeat in World War II and realizes the Japanese money he had collected is of no value. Siddharth is a fine fit for Othenan’s role and it was good to see the actor lending his own voice for Malayalam lines too. Murali Gopi as an actor doesn’t have much to do. A bunch of good actors like Siddique, Bobby Simha, Indrans and Vijayaraghavan are wasted because they have such minuscule screen space. But at least Siddique as Boss, Kammaran’s son, has some decent one-liners to lighten you up when the proceedings are mundane. Namitha Pramod is adequate. Divya Prabha once again leaves a mark in a supporting role. It’s unfortunate that the talented Shwetha Menon is asked to overact when she could have done a lot more. Santhosh Keezhattoor keeps up with his track record of dying on-screen. When you leave the cinema halls, you cannot help but wonder if this same movie would have worked a lot better if its first and second half were swapped. It seems like a big trick missed by Murali Gopi as it could have held the attention of viewers for longer. For now, in its current form, you need a lot of patience to sit through Kammara Sambhavam, even for a one-time watch. Let’s hope that Murali Gopi backs up his big ambitions with apt execution when he teams up next with director Prithviraj and actor Mohanlal for the big Lucifer.

MollywoodTouted to be an emotional drama, the film will have Mammootty playing a prisoner and Communist rebel.Digital NativeDigital NativeThe Malayalam megastar Mammootty’s film Parole was scheduled for release on March 31 and his fans were eagerly waiting for it. However, the makers of the film have issued a statement on their Facebook page confirming that the release has been postponed and that it will hit the marquee only on April 5. The Facebook post reads: “Dear all, due to some technical reasons, we regret to announce that our movie release has been postponed to 5th April 2018. Thank you for your patience. Your support and care has been really important to us. Please keep supporting. Let’s join hands to make Parole a big success!” According to reports doing the rounds, the film’s release had to be postponed to April 5 as there was a delay in obtaining the clearance certificate from the Animal Welfare Board of India, which needs to be submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification, for getting the film’s censor certificate. Touted to be an emotional drama that will have Mammootty putting on a powerful performance as a prisoner and Communist rebel, the film will feature actor Miya George as his sister. Directed by Sharrath Sandith, who will be making his debut as director with Parole, the film has been scripted by Ajith Poojappura. The star cast of Parole includes Iniya, Miya, Siddique, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Prabhakar, Lalu Alex, Padmaraj Ratheesh, Juby Ninan, Sudheer Karamana and Alencier Ley Lopez with Mammootty playing the lead role of Comrade Alex. The film is produced by Antony D’Cruz under the banner Antony D’Cruz Entertainments and distributed by Century Films. The technical crew of Parole includes Sharreth and Ellwyn Joshua as music composers, Loganathan Srinivasan as cinematographer and Suresh Urs as editor. While Peranbu is gearing up for release next week, Mammootty fans are in for a treat as he has a strong line-up of films including Uncle, Abrahaminte Santhathikal and Maamaankam waiting to hit the silver screens this year. MollywoodThe film, which is based on a true life incident, is director Sharrath Sandith's first project.Digital NativeDigital NativeParole, starring Mammootty in the lead role, is all set to hit the silver screens on the 31st of this month. The film, which is based on a true life incident, is directed by debutant director Sharrath Sandith while it was written by Ajith Poojappura. The teaser of Parole released recently shows its lead star behind the bars for committing a crime and we are yet to know the reason for it. Also, there are clips of an album containing photos capturing the best moments of the prisoner’s life. And it goes without saying that Mammootty plays the lead role, Alex in the film. The star cast of Parole is impressive with Mia George and Ineya playing the female leads and Tollywood actor Prabhakar playing an important role with Siddique, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Lalu Alex, Alencier, Sudheer Karamana and Kalashara Babu forming the supporting cast. On the film's title, its director Sharrath Sandith told the Times of India earlier, “I remember, on the first day of the shooting, we still didn't have a confirmed title. Mammukka was listening to a couple of songs that were composed for the film, and one of them was called the Parole song. That sort of struck him as something catchy. So, he asked one of the crew members to hand over the clapboard and he wrote down Parole on it. He was sceptical whether I would like it but I didn't have second thoughts.” Well, with Mammootty coming up with the title for this flick, the plot should be interesting to have the audiences glued to their seats. With Parole due release in less than a month, the star has moved over to his next and is busy concentrating in the period actioner Mamankam, which is being directed Sajeev Pillai. MollywoodPrithviraj Sukumaran shines in this movie about a man with a fondness for planes and a million dreams in his eyes. Aradhya Kurup vimanam.jpgAby, released earlier this year, and Vimaanam reportedly locked horns over their storylines that seemed similar – a real-life story of a man, who braves his hearing disability to make an airplane. If we were to judge both movies by the leading man alone, then we can say that Vimaanam is a notch better. Vineeth Sreenivasan’s half-wit act as Aby was a sour note in an otherwise fairly watchable story, while Prithviraj’s Venkidi stands on firmer ground. But then, unlike Aby, which singularly focuses on his plane-making dreams, Vimaanam takes off on a romantic tangent. Vimaanam unspools in flashbacks, through the eyes of a greying Venkiteshwaran, aka Venkidi, who has just been conferred a Padma Bhushan. Beginning in the early ’80s, the film introduces us to a little boy with a fondness for planes and a million dreams in his eyes. Little Venkidi tops his school, but has to drop out because someone or the other taunts him about his hearing disability. Eventually, he ends up at a mechanic shop, helping his uncle (Sudheer Karamana) and Pappan (Alencier), in whom he finds an ally. The film, however, doesn’t invest much time in establishing the young man’s journey from a school dropout to the ageing Padma Bhushan winner. Instead, the focus is on his love story with Janaki, who hails from an economically superior background. In that sense, Venkidi is more of a traditional hero. He is a math whiz, mad about planes, cocky when he wants to be and is madly in love with his childhood sweetheart (Durga Krishna). When Venkidi is scorned by the villagers, Janaki, Pappan, the church priest and his uncle stand by him. His mother is a worried widow who is too concerned about his future to understand her son’s genius. Many clichéd characters are introduced to add drama to the proceedings. Janaki’s over enthusiastic fiancé (Shyju Kurup) does nothing to enhance the narrative, and her father with his ideals rooted in the patriarchy, the silent mother and Pappan’s blind daughter add nothing to the story. Entire situations have been created to showcase Venkidi’s bravado. The portions featuring his various attempts at flying a plane are engaging. However, I only wish there were more such scenes in the movie. The love story, despite its intensity, isn’t anything new – two love ditties, some mush, tailored conflicts and a weepy, dramatic farewell. Prithviraj’s screen presence is undeniable; he is an actor who cannot be ignored when he is on screen. He tones down his histrionics when playing his younger self, sharing a pleasant chemistry with Durga Krishna. But the older Venkidi appears a bit forced. Durga Krishna is an interesting find and emotes with her eyes. Vimaanam’s greatest undoing is its running time – it could have easily been 30 minutes shorter. And there are some serious errors that have been overlooked – like when the older Venkidi admits to treason, which remains unexplored. Vimaanam ends up being a decadent love story (with faint traces of Ennu Ninte Moideen) – a tale of warring families, bad fates and fabled romance. The man with his passion for planes disembarks very early in the film without much fanfare. Enanble Notification: NoTNM Marquee: No...
