Compared to other war films, Devotion is in a league of its own with the true meaning of the title unveiling as the story progresses. Directed by J. D. Dillard and written by Jake Crane and Jonathan Stewart, the film is an adaptation of Adam Makos‘ 2015 book Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice. It tells the story of Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors), the first Black aviator in the U.S. Navy’s flight training program, and his service to humanity alongside Tom Hudner (Glen Powell) during the Korean War. With a star-studded ensemble cast comprising Jonathan Majors, Glen Powell,...

According to Deadline, Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter is developing a feature-film adaptation of A Murder in Hollywood: The Untold Story of Tinseltown’s Most Shocking Crime, which deals with the “deadly love affair between screen legend Lana Turner and her gangster boyfriend, Johnny Stompanato.“
A Murder in Hollywood was written by bestselling author Casey Sherman and will be published through Sourcebooks early next year. Terence Winter will write the script for the movie and will also produce through his Cold Front Pictures production company alongside Rachel Winter through her Tangerine Pictures banner.
Lana Turner was one of the biggest actresses of the 1940s, best known for her role in The Postman Always Rings Twice. She later caught the attention of Johnny Stompanato, an enforcer for gangster Mickey Cohen and the Cohen crime family, who pursued her relentlessly. What followed was a turbulent love affair full of violent arguments and...

Squadrons of F4U Corsair aircraft swarming the sky in perfect formation, bullets dancing past and through them, explosions and crashes galore: J.D. Dillard’s “Devotion” is a strikingly attractive war film. Although making war look this pretty may undermine the whole “war is hell” vibe that most movies go for, “Devotion” has a more romantic notion of its central conflict. Dillard paints the Korean War as the backdrop for heroic deeds and masculine bonding, never mind the complexities of the geopolitical stage.
Never mind a lot of complexity, actually. As a war story, it’s oddly rah-rah for the contemporary cinematic landscape. The Korean War was a conflict that, as far as “Devotion” is concerned, had to be fought and had nothing to debate. Indeed, the aviators at the center of “Devotion” were mostly flyboys from World War II who finished training too late to see action in the so-called “Big Show,...

A movie that somewhat flew under the radar (pun intended) this year is the war drama, Devotion. Jonathan Majors, whose star is on the rise with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania coming out along with Creed III, shows his chops as the leading man in this historical air combat film that is based on a true story. Devotion is set to be available for purchase with never-before-seen bonus content on Digital in the U.S. and Canada as well as streaming on Paramount+ this January 8.

In Sony’s Devotion, Jonathan Majors stars as Jesse Brown, the first Black aviator to complete the Navy’s basic training program. Set in the months leading to the Korean War, the film — directed by J.D. Dillard and adapted from Adam Makos’ nonfiction book by screenwriters Jake Crane and Jonathan A. Stewart — also stars Glen Powell as Tom Hudner, a naval lieutenant assigned to be Brown’s wingman. The film follows the pair as they train for battle and learn the tricky (and dangerous) challenge of landing a plane on the deck of an aircraft carrier. This is the story of Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors) and Tom Hudner (Glen Powell), a black and white wingman team during the early integrated Navy pilot days during the early Korean War conflict. Hudner becomes his colleague and friend, while Brown’s wife Daisy (Christina Jackson) keeps up the home front in a new and not-so-welcoming neighborhood. It’s important to keep in mind when sitting down to the big holiday meal in a day or so, that many families will have a temporary missing seat at the table. That’s the case with so many households with loved ones serving in the military. And then there’s the empty seat that goes from temporary to permanent. This Thanksgiving weekend’s new film release touches on that with a tale of real-life heroism in the sky. Oh, but it’s not another Top Gun wannabe, although it features one of the recent sequel’s hunky young stars. This is based on a conflict 72 years in the past. And, as I said, it’s all true concerning a group of men who possess a very special kind of Devotion.
The saga starts at a naval air base in Rhode Island as Navy fighter pilot Tom Hudner (Glen Powell) arrives for his new assignment.

It's remarkable how often seemingly ancient history becomes relevant again in our modern day -- sometimes tragically so. Such is the case in director J.D. Dillard's newest movie, "Devotion." The movie focuses on the Korean War of the early 1950s, telling the harrowing true story of two elite U.S. Navy fighter pilots. Specifically, the movie shines a light on Jesse Brown, played by Jonathan Majors ("Lovecraft Country"), who became the first Black aviator to ever complete the U.S. Navy's basic flight training program.
Looper's Don Kaye recently had the chance to speak with Majors in honor of the film's forthcoming release this weekend. During the conversation, Kaye asked the actor who relevant Brown's story is all these years later, particularly for Black people who are still facing roadblocks in today's society. Majors, for his part, feels Brown's story is an ever-relevant hero's journey to be used as...

J.D. Dillard’s “Devotion” was announced as the Audience Award winner for best narrative film following the conclusion of the Middleburg Film Festival. The Sony Pictures historical drama, which stars Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, was a heavy favorite from patrons and could be a quiet dark horse contender in the Oscar race.
Dillard and actor Christina Jackson were both in attendance in Virginia for a post-screening Q&a. Written by Jake Crane and Jonathan Stewart, the film is based on Adam Makos’ novel and tells the inspirational, true story of two elite U.S. Navy fighter pilots who fought in the Korean War in the 1950s.
“We were honored to have these filmmakers join us at the festival to present their exceptional films to our audiences and engage in thoughtful conversations,” said Susan Koch, Mff executive director.

If you believe the marketing, then Devotion, an inspirational aerial combat epic set during the Korean War, would like very much to be thought of as Top Gun: Corsair.
Strip away the IMAX scope, the booming score and the flyboy swagger, however, and all that remains is a hollow shell of bland, beaten-down war movie tropes that leave Jonathan Majors to effectively fend for himself with his deeply-rooted lead portrayal of the first Black aviator in Navy history.
Based on the book of the same name by Adam Makos, which described the friendship between Majors’ Jesse Brown and his fellow wingman, Tom Hudner (played by Glen Powell), the story has been brought to the screen by director J.D. Dillard (himself the son of only the second African American member of the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels squadron) with a great deal of respect but insufficient dramatic depth.

Director Jd Dillard says he grew up hearing all about his own father’s experiences as the second African American Blue Angels pilot, so naturally when Adam Makos’ book Devotion came out he was instantly intrigued about adapting it to the screen. The book tells the story of the friendship and, yes, devotion (where the title comes from in part) of two elite U.S. Navy fighter pilots who made a big difference in one of the Korean War’s most intense battles in the early 1950s. But the story has great significance as it really tells the extraordinary tale of Jesse Brown, who became the first Black aviator in Navy history, and together with his unique friendship and working relationship with Tom Hudner the pair became legend as authentic Navy wingmen heroes.

A downbeat Korean War drama about the friendship between the first Black aviator in Navy history and the Abercrombie model wingman who always had his side, “Devotion” might suffer in the shadow of a mega-spectacle like “Top Gun: Maverick,” but
The first and most obvious of those strengths is Jonathan Majors, who infuses Jesse Brown with layers of warmth and nuance that Jake Crane and Jonathan A.H. Stewart’s thin screenplay would never have been able to find on its own. The second is that “Devotion” has an identifiable enemy, whereas both “Top Gun” films made the dramatically agreeable decision to lock their heroes in dogfights with generic bad guys.
But that enemy isn’t just the Chinese ground forces who ultimately present Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner (ultra-likable “Maverick” alum Glen Powell) with their most dangerous threat, nor even the persistent racism that Jesse encounters from his fellow...

Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell are taking off in the official trailer for “Devotion,” the new drama set to release this Thanksgiving.
Based on the nonfiction book by Adam Makos, “Devotion” focuses on the military careers of Jesse Brown (Majors) and Tom Hudner (Powell), two elite Navy fighter pilots who served during the Korean War. In spite of the racism that Brown experiences as one of the first Black aviators, he forms a close camaraderie with the white Hudner, and the two go on to work together as wingmen in several battles, including the Battle of Chosin Reservoir.
Along with Majors and Powell, “Devotion” also stars Christina Jackson, Joe Jonas and Thomas Sadoski. J.D. Dillard directs the film from a screenplay by J.D. Dillard from a screenplay by Jake Crane and Jonathan A. H. Stewart. Jonathan Majors became “sick as a dog” while filming war drama “Devotion” because, well, Dramamine didn’t exist in the 1950s during the Korean War, when the film takes place.

Actor Glen Powell, known for his roles in Scream Queens, Hidden Figures, and The Bad Guys, will be starring in the upcoming Korean War drama entitled Devotion, with J.D. Dillard directing. Variety reports the following description of the true story:
The film is an aerial war epic that tells the harrowing true story of two elite U.S. Navy fighter pilots, Tom Hudner and Jesse L. Brown, during the Korean War. Their heroic sacrifices would ultimately make them the Navy’s most celebrated wingmen.
Powell will play the pilot Tom Hudner, whose story is chronicled along with Brown in the Adam Makos book Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice. The script is being penned by Jake Crane and Jonathan Stewart. I think it will be interesting to see a film based on the Korean War, and it sounds like this story will be riveting and incredible to watch.

Sol Bondy’s Berlin-based One Two Films has boarded Iranian helmer Rafi Pitts’ latest film, “Random Star Suicide,” produced by French shingle Les Films du Worso and set to shoot next year.
After 2016’s “Soy Nero,” Pitts again examines Americans living on the margins of society in a story that follows a young black man and a working-class veteran whose lives and destinies cross.
One Two Films is continuing its focus on international and English-language productions as it recalibrates following the recent exit of longtime partner Jamila Wenske. The company has a new office in Berlin and a slew of projects in the works as it seeks to broaden its reach as an international co-producer specialized in Germany’s soft money incentives.
One Two Films partnered with Denmark’s Profile Pictures on Grimur Hakonarson’s Icelandic drama “The County,” which premieres in Toronto’s Contemporary World Cinema section, and the...
