On Sunday night, Broadway honored the best live theater of the year at the 76th annual Tony Awards.
At a time of the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, it was a possibility that the ceremony would not happen this year, but the WGA and the Tony Awards’ organizers reached an agreement where the show would not be picketed and the writers would not work on the telecast. The previous time this occurred was in 1988 when Phantom of the Opera and Into the Woods competed for Best Musical.
The Tonys was the first major ceremony to take place amid the current writers’ strike. While other awards shows need a host and numerous presenters to say written remarks about the competitors and provide good ratings, the Tonys already have a built-in fan base that only requires around a dozen performances and winners’ speeches to succeed.

Here’s the thing about this year’s Tony Awards: They didn’t just want to exist. They needed to exist.
So in that brief moment last month when, after not getting a waiver from the WGA, it was unclear how or if the show was going to go on at all, the theater community freaked out. A little. But justifiably. The relationship between the Tony Awards and not just Broadway, but the theatrical community on every level — from touring productions to regional shows to unlicensed summer-camp versions of the classics — is entirely unlike the relationship between the Oscars and movies, Emmys and television, or Grammys and music.
Every award show is, by nature, half a commercial for the industry being honored and half a nice chance to honor talented people. But if those other industries get a boost or general infusion from their respective kudos-fests, Broadway gets full-on dialysis.

Ariana DeBose kicked off the 76th annual Tony Awards Sunday night with a rousing dance number and heartfelt salute of support to the writers’ strike — while also poking fun at the fact that this year’s ceremony will run historically without a script.
“I’m unscripted — as will every presenter who comes onstage tonight. We’re just making it up as we go along,” the “West Side Story” Oscar winner said.
She also nodded to her hosting gig from last year’s ceremony: “To anyone who thought last year might’ve been a bit unhinged, to them I say: Darlings, buckle up.”

By the looks of these videos, it would seem a strong and lasting partnership was formed on So You Think You Can Dance between Jonathan Platero and Karla Garcia. Not only has Jonathan been uploading an awful lot of cute pictures of the pair on his twitter account, it seems the two have been spending quite a bit of time in the studio and dancing together. The pair have been hosting workshops and they're teaching under their very own NappyTabs-esque nickname: Karlathon.
Of course, this connection should come as no surprise to anyone who witnessed their chill-inducing contemporary routine early on in season 5 of So You Think You Can Dance. Amidst a season of dances inspired by Breast Cancer, addiction, and Vitolio's heart-breaking childhood, Karla and Jonathan's performance still managed to stand out because of the honest emotion the two seem to share. Now that So You Think You Can Dance is done,...

Newly coupled dancers, Karla Garcia and Vitolio Jeune, have to swallow bitter pills of elimination when the judges of "So You Think You Can Dance" decided that it was time for them to go. Karla and Vitolio were in the bottom three along with the couples Kayla Radomski-Kupono Aweau and Jeanine Mason-Phillip Chbeeb.
During the solo effort to get a second chance, Karla danced to 'Blackbird' by Dionne Farris but Head Judge Nigel Lythgoe said the Jazz/Contemporary dancer did not ooze the star quality that they thought she possessed at the beginning. Meanwhile, Vitolio did a routine to "Here Comes Goodbye" by Rascal Flatts. Nigel said the Contemporary dancer offered nothing but his presence.
Karla and Vitolio danced the quickstep on the performance night, a routine which was choreographed by Jean-Marc Genereux. They became a dancing couple after their respective partners, Jonathan Platero and Asuka Kondoh,...

One guy and one girl from the Top 20 were sent home on "So You Think You Can Dance" on Thursday, June 11. It was just a coincidence that the eliminated ones happened to be a couple who joined forces on Wednesday's performance night, Paris Torres and Tony Bellissimo.
Paris and Tony were coupled on the Top 20 round, crafting a Hip-Hop piece for Black Eyed Peas' "Let the Beat Rock". While Tony is originally a Hip-Hoper, Paris is leaning more into contemporary style. And their Wednesday performance, which was choreographed by the D'umo couple, was rather slow for the beat and not memorable.
Based on audience votes, Paris and Tony were in the bottom three along with two other couples, Asuka Kondoh and Vitolio Jeune as well as Karla Garcia and Jonathan Platero. But the final elimination was determined by the panel of judges who must pick one guy and one girl to be cut off.

Full disclosure: I'm a rabid So You Think You Can Dance fan. Every summer for the past four years the talent on display on this show simply blows every other reality competition out of the water. So much so, that one can even overlook the nagging, hetero-cheerleading presence of producer Nigel Lythgoe on the judging panel.
Nigel's peculiar obsession with the masculinity of male dancers aside, Sytycd raises your standards when it comes to dance. I mean, once you start watching this show it is awfully hard to sit through an episode of Dancing with the Stars.
Sytycd is now in its fifth season, and every year we wonder if they can assemble dancers talented enough to stack up against previous season standouts such as Travis Wall, Danny Tidwell, Neil Haskell, and a host of others.
Well, last week the show announced its finalists for the new season, and the...
