Martin Eden brings some freshness to graphic novels in Spandex - Fast and Hard, making us smile in the process with an outing that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Billed as ‘the UK’s first all-gay superheroes,’ this bright and brassy bunch are based in Brighton, and have unusually complicated love-lives, giving them a humanity often lacking in the average Gn. This was the first graphic novel I’ve read in a long time, and I was impressed. Too often, you hear people make one of two criticisms of graphic novels – ‘the illustrations weren’t as good as the storyline’ or ‘the storyline didn’t match the quality of the graphics.’ You can’t say that about this the first book-outing of these intriguing superheroes. The central message seems to be that 'it’s all right to be different’ - and to be 'out' and proud.

Packed with pop culture references, nods to classic comics and chock-full of humour and drama, Spandex is a super-hero book like no other! If the reaction from some comic book fans to the announcement of Northstar and Kyle's wedding in the pages of Marvel's Astonishing X-Men #51 is anything to go by, Spandex won't appeal to everyone. And that's a damn shame. The hardcover contains the first three issues of the series and...

Spandex is released on June 19th in the Us and June 15th in the UK from Titan Books. My review of the first volume ("Fast And Hard") won't be up on Cbm until next month, although I will say that this is a book you should most definitely consider checking out. Many thanks to creator, writer and artist Martin Eden for taking the time to answer the questions below, and to Titan's Tom Green for setting up the interview. Where did the idea for Spandex come from and what made you decide to create the world's first all gay superhero team? I was working on my old comic (The O Men) and I needed a break… And at the same time, some background O Men characters were starting to grab my attention. I started to realize that they were gay, and the idea evolved from there. It was a case of,...

Simpsons Comics will receive a redesign this month, Titan Publishing has announced. The bestselling title will take on a new look from January 19 to celebrate the launch of its 200th issue later this year, reports Licensing.biz. The Simpsons television show also hit a milestone in 2012 with its 500th episode scheduled to air in the spring. Fox confirmed that it had commissioned two more seasons of the animated sitcom last October. "We're really excited here at Simpsons HQ," said editor Martin Eden. The entertainment world is in danger of turning into another Thriller video: there are zombies everywhere these days.
Not just on TV in The Walking Dead, based on Robert Kirkman's hit comic book, but in films such as Resident Evil and 28 Days Later; superhero comics such as the Green Lantern story Blackest Night; and novels such as Tomes of the Dead: Stronghold. Not to mention the spoofs such as Shaun of the Dead and Zombie Driftwood.
With all those dead people strolling around in slow, menacing fashion (Filmmaker George A Romero says he would have it no other way), it stands to reason that some of them must be gay and some must be celebrities.
Step forward the latest issue of the British comic Spandex.
Spandex is the the world's first all-gay superhero team and stars of their own award-nominated comic.

Oh Eurovision, why must you only be once a year? If you’re not that familiar with it, then in a nutshell it’s an excuse for gay men to have house parties and laugh at bad European music.
Approximately 120 million people tuned in to see Norway host the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest, where this year Germany took the title.
Germany doesn’t usually do very well in the scoring, but this year they blatantly cheated by taking it seriously. They put a quirky singer named Lena up for the title and she half-spoke, half-sang a love song in a strange accent à la Bjork/Lily Allen.
Also weighing in Germany's favor, they’ve been supporting the European economy, whereas the UK closed their eyes and put their collective fingers in their ears – and came last as a result. It didn’t help that we were represented with a song by Pete Waterman,...

Martin Eden's gay superhero comic Spandex has been nominated for an Eagle Award. The book, which debuted last November, will be up for 'Best British Colour Comic Book' when the international prize is handed out this summer. "I'm completely shocked and I really didn’t expect it," said Eden. "I'm so proud of my comic and I'm really trying to do things that have never been done in a comic before. I'm up against some big titles in my category, so it'd be so exciting if the independent guy won! "I have some amazing plans for the next few issues of (more)...

A comic book featuring the world's first gay superhero team has debuted at retail level. Spandex follows the exploits of transvestite crimefighter Liberty and Wonder Woman's lesbian equivalent Diva, as they team up with fellow gay heroes Prowler, Glitter, Indigo and the twins Mr Muscles & Butch. Each issue sees them do battle with villains such as Muscle Mary, p**** and the Pink Ninjas. "Gay people in comics are fairly under-represented, but this new comic aims to address that," said series creator Martin Eden. "Spandex introduces a whole bunch of fabulous new characters who are set to take the comic world by storm." "It's (more)...
