When a band plays a cover you know, you get excited. When they mash-up more than nine together, your head explodes. That is what happened here with A.V. Club’s newest video performance, Diy champion Jeff Rosenstock and Folksters turn Indie heroes Andrew Jackson Jihad came in, cover 16 tracks and completely blew us away. The video, which came out yesterday, starts with East Coast Punk wizard Jeff Rosenstock powering through a hodgepodge of tunes like Buzzcocks’ classic “Ever Fallen in Love” or the more contemporary Frank Ocean’s “Thinking About You”. Who run the world? Girls (just ask Beyoncé)! So why isn't there a single woman on any piece of American money? Susan Sarandon and fellow gender equality advocates not only want to know the answer to this, but they've proposed a solution: Women on 20s, a campaign determined to get one of 15 distinguished women to replace U.S. President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill by 2020, the 100-year anniversary of the passage of the Constitutional amendment granting women the legal right to vote. Sarandon helped propel the movement Tuesday when she tweeted a photo of herself holding cash. "I want to see a woman on the $20 bill," she wrote. "Post your own photo & join me by voting at...

The History Channel did so well with Hatfields And McCoys in 2012, that they are re-teaming with star of that series, Bill Paxton, for Texas Rising – and it is Paxton that features in the first image from the production, from Entertainment Weekly. The eight hour miniseries details the rise of the Texas Rangers after the events at the Alamo, and also numbers Brendan Fraser among its all-star cast.
Paxton stars as Sam Houston – namesake of the Texas city, and the American politician and soldier that helped bring Texas into the United States. During his career, in addition to being the first and third President of the Republic of Texas, he was instrumental in the victory that secured the independence of Texas from Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto. The Texas Rangers – about whom this miniseries is made – were technically founded by Stephen F. Austin in 1823, when he employed ten men...

Warner Bros. is moving forward with their Space Invaders movie. Deadline is reporting that the studio has hired Black List writer Dan Kunka to write the script for the film, which is based on the classic arcade game.
Kunka made the Hollywood Black List by taking a 52 page spec script called Yellowstone Falls and converting it into a film about wolves battling zombies. Sounds like my kind of writer! Since he has worked on a project like that, I'm sure he's going to have a blast bringing Space Invaders to life.
Kunka is working on several other projects at the moment, including an adaptation of Winston Groom's (Forrest Gump) novel Patriotic Fire: Andrew Jackson and Jean Laffite at the Battle of New Orleans. He also recently sold a one hour drama to SyFy Channel with Robert Zemeckis producing. Then there's Yellowstone Falls, which is set up at Warner Bros....

The alien invasion is about to begin.
Warner Brothers enlisted Black List writer Dan Kunka to write the script for the live-action movie version of the popular late 1970s/early 1980s video game Space Invaders.
The video game was originally conceived by Tomohiro Nishikado and was a part of the Golden Age of Video Games. The video game concept is simple with a mobile gunner shooting at rows of alien invaders and preventing them from reaching the surface. The game spawned several sequels and is a fixture in the video game culture.
According to Deadline, Kunka converted a 52-page spec “Yellowstone Falls” into the wolves versus zombies movie. He is also adapting Winston Groom’s novel “Patriotic Fire: Andrew Jackson and Jean Laffite at the Battle of New Orleans” for the big screen.
It won’t be the only sci-fi arcade game from its video game era trying to be a live-action film.

Ye, back in the days of yore (1999 to be exact) those who held the office of the President of the United States of America (the fictional one on "The West Wing") invited the wackadoos and weirdos of the country (that one's accurate) to discuss the issues of the day with the President and his staff. The real-life tradition began in 1837, when President Andrew Jackson had a 1,400 pound block of cheese hauled into the main foyer of the White House for an open house with thousands of citizens who wanted to discuss issues important to them, as well as nosh on the hunk. And ye, it was gouda. The event, theretofore titled "Big Block of Cheese Day," was first celebrated (and appropriately mocked) in "The West Wing" Season 1 episode "The Crackpots and These Women," where C.J. Cregg (Alison Janney) was forced to meet with UFO conspiracy theorists and environmentalists who...

This may be the wrong way to wake up, but in the video below you can watch tarantulas crawl all over Jimmy Fallon.
On Monday night, Jimmy had a visit from Jeff Musial's animal kingdom, including an adorable Siberian lynx, a red kangaroo, and a couple of Mexican white and red-kneed tarantulas. Jimmy looked uncomfortable through the whole thing, even before Jeff randomly put a tarantula on his shoulder. Jimmy kept repeating, "I don't like spiders," but apparently Jeff got the Ok from someone because he kept adding tarantulas onto his head, face and hand. Poor Jimmy looked traumatized. It didn't help that Jeff kept shouting "Don't move!

First of all, there is nothing wrong with comics and stories in general filled with big explosions, blood splatters, and fire fights, especially if they’re part of the action or military genre. The Ghost Fleet #1 squarely fits into these kind of stories and relishes in its military credentials from the first page, which has a typically gory panel of Andrew Jackson and his soldiers fighting the British with some smaller panels showing Jackson’s covert activities with French privateers. The mix of over the top action and espionage is a nice hook for the comic, but Ghost Fleet decides to predominantly focus on the action part. This is a black ops story that happens to feature truckers with military training, but writer Donny Cates doesn’t flesh out...

The White House is taking a note from history - and The West Wing - by holding a virtual Big Block of Cheese Day this Wednesday. Inspired by an actual event, the day gets its name from President Andrew Jackson's 1837 open house, which featured a 1,400-pound block of cheese that sat in the main hall. Back then, members of the public visited the White House not just for a slice of cheddar but also to mingle with the cabinet and staff. That's not exactly how this week's version will go. The modern-day take was announced in the silly, West Wing-inspired video above, and it will involve officials answering questions through social media. Naturally, people have already taken to Twitter with their questions, and there are some strange, hilarious inquiries attached to the #AsktheWH hashtag. For every hard-hitting question about immigration reform or healthcare opportunities, there's a "Pepsi or Coke?...

Is there any greater symbol of democracy than thousands of Americans gnawing at the same 1,400 lb block of cheese? The White House won't have an actual giant dairy brick available during their Big Block of Cheese Day "virtual open house" next Wednesday, but they did enlist West Wing's Bradley Whitford and Joshua Malina to hype the event, and they're both pretty great. As you might recall, the West Wing episode "The Crackpots and These Women" featured the original Cheese Day, which was itself inspired by Andrew Jackson's public cheese tasting. Of course, neither Jackson nor Bartlet had to deal with questions from the Internet, so godspeed, White House. You're going to wish you were waist-deep in Gouda by the end of this.

Sorry, Sleepy Hollow: Reign saw your headless horseman and raised you a French court complete with a supernatural spirit protecting a young! sexy! teenage! Mary, Queen of Scots as she works her way through the social and political minefield that was royalty at the time.
History buffs are sure to be disappointed by The CW getting into the politics of 16th century French court (Francis II of France was not so much a stud as he was sickly), but for those of us who are looking for an over-the-top costume drama by the people who brought you 90210, welcome to your new favorite show.

Discovery issued an email this morning letting the media know it has ended its programming partnership with BBC — a relationship that’s produced some of Discovery’s most acclaimed Oprah Winfrey-narrated natural history telecasts. “Discovery and the BBC today announced that their longstanding partnership is coming to an end, by mutual agreement,” Discovery announced this morning, taking a page out of the Kadashian playbook. It’s the same old story: they’d grown apart — BBC focusing on blue-chip shows along the lines of Life, and Frozen Planet, Discovery looking for more character-driven reality series: Gold Rush, Gold Fever, Alaska: The Last Frontier, Alaska: The Last Frontier, Naked and Afraid. And yet, Discovery’s Evp, Production & Development, Landmark Series and Specials, Andrew Jackson said in this morning’s announcement: “As Discovery’s global audiences continue to flourish, they demand the very best science and natural history programming. This is taking us in exciting,...
