Since its debut in 2000, hundreds of castaways have played the game of “Survivor.” While many have been injured on CBS’s reality TV show, no one has ever died during filming. Sadly, several former players have passed away since leaving the island. In our “Survivor” deaths photo gallery above, we take a moment to remember all of the people who we’ve lost over the years, including most recently Sonja Christopher of Season 1 fame. Their torches will live on forever in our hearts.
Sonja Christopher (‘Survivor: Borneo’)
January 28, 1937 – April 26, 2024
Having the distinction of being the first person ever to be voted out of “Survivor,” Sonja was a sweet, fun-loving person who integrated well with her Tagi tribe members, serenading them with tunes from her luxury item of a ukulele. Rob Mariano, known as “Boston Rob” from all his time on Survivor, has faced many challenges in his long reality show career. Whether he was matching wits against Sandra Diaz-Twine and Russell Hantz on Survivor or traveling around the world with his wife, Amber, on The Amazing Race, Boston Rob is no stranger to difficult situations. Now that he is on Deal Or No Deal Island, he will eventually have to face what could be his most difficult challenge of all. That difficult challenge would be “the banker.”
Deal Or No Deal Is Now On An Island
Many will remember NBC’s Deal Or No Deal from several years ago. The contestants, the briefcases of cash, the briefcase models, and, of course, the banker. This was all filmed on a safe, comfortable television stage. That is not how it is anymore.
Now, there is Deal Or No Deal Island. It is filmed on an island.

Producer Mark Burnett expected a hit when he sent 16 contestants and a then-unknown 38-year-old host named Jeff Probst to the Borneo island of Malaysia for an adaptation of the Swedish competition show Expedition Robinson. What he got instead was a cultural phenomenon. Survivor instantly became a ratings juggernaut, and viewership for the first season finale reached north of 50 million. Reality TV existed before Survivor, but the show’s low overhead and potential for mass appeal single-handedly ushered in the reality-competition boom.
In the 24 years since it hit airwaves, Survivor has morphed from a “social experiment” into television’s most complex and grueling competition, with players practically raised on the show elevating it to new heights of strategy. Its motto—“Outwit. Outplay. Farewell, Omarosa Manigault Newman — at least you're uniquely familiar with the process of being fired. The Apprentice contestant (turned Trump White House staffer) was one of eight reality TV villains to get the boot in Round 2 of Primetimer's Ultimate Reality TV Villains Bracket. Omarosa's early exit from the tournament wasn't the only upset in the Round of 16, which also saw Juan Pablo Galavis, the most hated man in The Bachelor history, fall to The Real Housewives of New York alum Ramona Singer, and embattled Dance Moms star Abby Lee Miller bow down to Survivor finalist Russell Hantz and his fedora.

There were no easy victories to be found in Round 1 of Primetimer's Ultimate Reality TV Villains bracket. On Monday, half the field "sashayed away" as Survivor's Russell Hantz bested drag queen Phi Phi O'Hara, Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino Gtl-ost to David "Puck" Rainey in a clash of the nicknamed MTV personalities, and Tyra Banks defeated Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger. Not even widely respected villains were safe from elimination, as Vanderpump Rules' Jax Taylor fell to Housewife Ramona Singer and her gross pattern of microaggressions.

The Wurtenberger brothers have taken over CBS reality TV shows.
Current “Big Brother 25” houseguest Cory Wurtenberger made a comment during the August 10 live show that may have confused casual viewers: “Beat you, Zach.” As it turns out, he was poking fun at his real-life big bro Zach Wurtenberger, who was the first person voted out of “Survivor 42.” By surviving his own show’s initial eviction, Cory has now lasted longer than Zach, so their family dinners will never be the same.
“F*** that guy,” Zach jokingly posted on social media immediately after Cory’s “Beat you, Zach” comment aired on CBS. He later wrote, “Look at that smug f***er,” when a fan posted a photo of Cory’s face. Talk about the ultimate sibling rivalry! Zach later changed his profile pictures to images of Hisam Goueli, one of Cory’s allies in the “BB25” house.

If you watched the first episode of “Big Brother 25,” you learned that one of the new houseguests, Jared Fields, is related to a “Survivor” legend, Cirie Fields, who later joined the show as the 17th player. However, Cory Wurtenberger also has a connection to a former “Survivor” castaway, but that relationship wasn’t revealed to viewers. At least, not yet.
Cory’s brother is Zach Wurtenberger, who was the first person voted out of “Survivor 42.” Zach is perhaps best remembered as being the fated love interest of eventual winner Maryanne Oketch. (Remember when she told Jeff Probst that Zach was “literally picture perfect” following his elimination?) After that season aired on CBS, the two jokingly changed their social media names to “Zach Oketch” and “Maryanne Wurtenberger.”

“Survivor” is a game that ends with one person claiming the life-changing $1 million prize, but sometimes the winner is not the one people expect. The title of Sole Survivor is the result of taking out the biggest competitors, being likable in the cast, and appealing to the jury, all while arguing the case of why you’re the most deserving of the win. While many of the champions are well-deserved, at least according to the passionate fans at home, others spark massive debate when Jeff Probst reads their names out loud. Scroll through our photo gallery above (or click here for direct access) where we detail the Top 10 biggest “Survivor” upset winners of all time.

“Survivor” players know that only one person can win the game, but it always stings to be the first one eliminated. The pain of being booted first from your season has to be a difficult one to get over, especially for those who really wanted to play the game. First boots are often targeted because of age or challenge performance or etiquette around camp, and it’s sad to see people’s torch be snuffed after only three days on the island. Some early vote-offs make such an impression, however, that they are remembered even today. Above you can scroll through our gallery (or click here for direct access) of 20 memorable “Survivor” first boots, listed in order of appearance. We hope they get another chance to play again one day.

With over 43 seasons of Survivor, it’s difficult to choose which ones stand out the most. There have been numerous entertaining seasons full of impressive gameplay, dynamic casts, and shocking Tribal Councils that have left us with our jaws on the floor. But we’ve narrowed the list of all-time great seasons to five must-sees for any Survivor fan.
Jeff Probst | Photo: Robert Voets/CBS 5. ‘Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X’
Including Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X on our list of the top five Survivor seasons might be a controversial pick, but we wholeheartedly stand by it.
Adam Klein is one of the most underrated winners (aside from Vecepia Towery). After all, he is one of five castaways to win the show unanimously, and he played a smart (yet chaotic at times) strategic and social game. Plus, Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X introduced us to multiple memorable players, including Zeke Smith,...

Survivor favorite Parvati Shallow almost didn’t appear on the CBS show because she nearly got cast for The Real World or Road Rules a few years beforehand. Had she made the MTV series, Parvati probably would have gone on to compete in The Challenge instead.

A few years before making her debut on Survivor: Cook Islands, favorite Parvati Shallow nearly got cast for The Real World: Paris or Road Rules: South Pacific.
In a March 2023 Instagram photo, she shared a picture of the 2003 rejection letter she received from Bunim/Murray Productions. It began by congratulating her for making it to the interview stage as part of the top 250 applicants from the over 5,000 submissions they received.
She's got charm and she knows how to persuade. Parvati is back and @JeffProbst believes she's going to be a weapon in this game!

As the old saying goes, once you reach the top, the only way to go is down. Perhaps that’s a part of the reason why so many “Survivor” winners never returned to play again. There have been 39 winners over the past 41 seasons, and of those a whopping 27 played multiple times. Thus, over the past two decades, 12 “Survivor” champions took home the 1 million check and never looked back — or were never asked back. See the full list below.
Several winners found success on their second go-around, like Amber Brkich (“All-Stars”) and Parvati Shallow (“Micronesia”). For others it took a long while to get there, like Rob Mariano (“Redemption Island”), who didn’t prevail until his fourth season.
Some of the most recent champs like Chris Underwood (Season 38), Tommy Sheehan (Season 39) and Erika Casupanan (Season 41) haven’t had a chance to return to the game quite yet, but we’re optimistic...

As one player swiftly learned Wednesday: There’s just no such thing as “Survivor confidence.”
This week, the Final 6 fought for their lives in the game, as one castaway playing from the bottom tried to convince the entire tribe to vote her way. While everyone remained a target for his or her own very specific reasons, the influx of idols and final chance to play the Shot in the Dark turned every possible plan into a giant, looming question mark. But whose plan worked, and who was sent packing? And which five players will go on battle it out in the season finale (airing Wednesday,...

Tori Meehan makes ‘Survivor’ history by winning first 2 individual immunity challenges of the season
Over the course of the first 21 years and 41 seasons of “Survivor,” only one woman had won the first two individual immunity challenges of her season: Laura Morett in 2009’s “Survivor: Samoa.” Now, her long-standing record has been tied by Tori Meehan, who just claimed back-to-back victories in the first two individual immunity challenges of “Survivor 42.” Talk about girl power!
One caveat in mentioning this record is that Laura’s initial immunity win was actually awarded to the best performing male (John Fincher) and female (Laura) of that specific challenge. Tori didn’t have to share either of her two immunity necklaces, which puts her truly in a league of her own when it comes to making “Survivor” history.

Ralph Kiser, a contestant who appeared on the 22nd season of Survivor, died on Wednesday morning after a sudden heart attack. He was 56. The news of Kiser’s passing was first revealed by a family friend on Facebook and was later confirmed by People. “[Ralph] passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack this morning,” wrote Michael Allbright. “His brother Gilbert messaged me this morning to let the Survivor community know.” A farmer from Lebanon, Virginia, Kiser competed on Survivor: Redemption Island in 2011 as part of the Zapatera tribe. He notably found a hidden immunity idol during his first days in the game and was part of a majority alliance that voted out infamous Survivor villain Russell Hantz. Kiser would reach the merge portion of the game but found himself on the wrong side of the numbers. He ultimately finished in 9th place. “I’ve wanted to be on the show for...

Ralph Kiser, a farmer from Lebanon, Virginia who competed against two of the biggest villains in the history of the CBS franchise has died, according to multiple reports. He was 56.
Kiser tried out for the show several times before landing a spot on Season 22 in 2010. Dubbed Survivor: Redemption Island, the cycle featured ubervillain Russell Hantz and the legendary Boston Rob Mariano, who eventually won the game.
Kiser placed 9th, lasting until day 33. On his intro questionnaire for the show he said he thought he’d do well because, “I’m an outdoors mountain man. I know plants, trees and what most of their uses are. I can also build anything; start a fire anywhere and make people believe anything I say!”
Earlier today, Survivor superfan Michael Allbright shared the news of Kiser’s passing on Facebook.

One of the most memorable villains to ever play the game of “Survivor,” Russell Hantz, is not happy about host Jeff Probst‘s decision to stop saying the “guys” part of his iconic “Come on in, guys” catchphrase. In Hantz’s 13-minute video response (watch above), he explains, “It’s a big deal when you take tradition out of things. That’s a huge deal.” Probst initially asked the “Survivor 41” cast members in the season premiere whether they were still okay with the word “guys” in today’s climate, and they responded in the affirmative. Later at the immunity challenge, Ricard Foye spoke up about the need to retire the phrase and Probst stated, “I’m with you. I want to change it. I’m glad that was the last time I will ever say it.”

“I’ve never been more ready to come back and kick some ass,” Jenna Morasca recently told EW.com about whether she’d ever want to play “Survivor” again. This winner of Season 6 (“The Amazon”) is still the youngest woman to ever take home the $1 million check — she was just 21 when the show aired in 2003. But she hasn’t played since Season 8 (“All Stars”) in 2004, a whopping 17 years ago now. The most recent 40th cycle (“Winners at War”) invited back 20 former champions to play again, but Morasca, who admitted she’s “older now,” wasn’t one of them. Do you hope this forgotten winner returns for a future season of “Survivor” so newer fans can see her in action? Sound off down in the comment section.

In a recent Cameo video, “Survivor” host Jeff Probst praised one of the most iconic villains to ever play the game, Russell Hantz. Probst claimed that after re-watching “Heroes vs. Villains” (which is now on Netflix), he found himself newly “impressed” by Hantz for the way he helped to “reinvent” the show. The manipulative baddie came close to winning twice — he was the runner-up to Natalie White in “Samoa” and the third-place finisher to Sandra Diaz-Twine and Parvati Shallow in “Heroes vs. Villains” — but never claimed victory due in part to poor jury management. Many “Survivor” fans now find themselves rolling their eyes at Probst’s comments (see below), with mscoutm simply writing, “Noooooooooo.”

It’s been a whopping seven months since “Survivor” last aired on TV, meaning the two-decade-old show is experiencing its longest hiatus ever. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, production on Season 41 of “Survivor” has been delayed indefinitely — womp, womp. The new episodes were originally supposed to film in early summer, to air during September-December of this year. As we wait for word on when, or if, the show will actually continue anytime soon, we can’t help but pose a controversial question for fans to ponder: Should “Survivor” throw in the torch and call it quits after 40 seasons? While “Survivor” fans patiently await news on when Season 41 might eventually premiere (the latest rumor has it airing in Spring 2021), there is some good news on the horizon as reruns of CBS’s reality TV show are coming to Netflix. Mark your calendars for November 15, as that’s when the series will start streaming on the platform for the first time, according to Netflix Queue. However, there’s a massive catch as Netflix has only acquired two cycles: “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains” (Season 20) and “Survivor: Cagayan — Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty” (Season 28). Apparently it’s not just the fans who are going through “Survivor” withdrawals due to the coronavirus-induced hiatus, but also the former players. Russell Hantz, the three-time legend from “Samoa,” “Heroes vs. Villains” and “Redemption Island,” recently angry-tweeted at host Jeff Probst over the extended delay for Season 41. Russell’s argument? Since “The Bachelorette” can produce new episodes during a pandemic (with contestants even “exchanging saliva”), then “Survivor” should find a way, too. “Let’s get it figured out! Hidden Immunity Idols have been a “Survivor” staple since Season 11, “Guatemala,” when Gary Hogeboom found the elusive token. Since then, idols are being used on a much more strategic level, with some finders even playing it on other people in the game. It is an added layer to the game that continues to make players even more paranoid than they already were, fearful of being blindsided by the finder. But who’s found the most idols on “Survivor”? Scroll down for the updated list.
Some “Survivor” contestants are dangerously good at finding idols. Once you find one, it generally becomes easier to know what to look for. Players like Russell Hantz, Tony Vlachos, Tai Trang, Rick Devens and Kelley Wentworth have all attained multiple idols in the same season. Not everyone plays their idol correctly, and some infamously fail to play them at the right time, resulting in their elimination.

Oh, we had such hopes. Only one person can win “Survivor,” so 95% has to lose, but some lose harder than others. Some players look great on paper but utterly flame out once they start actually playing the game. Others do well for the majority of the season but end up choking in the end. Then there are those who play fantastic games on their first seasons but are not able to replicate that success on future iterations. Above, tour our guide of the most spectacular flameouts in “Survivor” history.
People like Amanda Kimmel and Russell Hantz have done well in multiple seasons, getting to Final Tribal Council not once but twice. But neither was able to convince the jury to vote for them to win in the end, with Amanda in particular seeming like a frontrunner to win only to flounder like a fish out of water in front of the jury.

To compare, 40% of haters said “good riddance to bad rubbish” while the remaining 18% chose the “meh” option. Do you agree or disagree with those poll results? Sound off down in the comments section.

Love her or hate her, Sandra Diaz-Twine is one of the most well-known people to ever play the game of “Survivor.” During the third episode of “Winners at War,” the self-appointed queen made this startling announcement: “Here I am for the fifth time, and once this is over I’m retiring from the game. So this season I’m going to switch gears. I want to prove my word to this tribe.” Will you miss Queen Sandra on “Survivor”? Vote in our poll below.

Sandra’s first season was “Pearl Islands” (Season 7), which she won with a 6-1 jury vote over Lillian Morris thanks in part to her “anybody but me” strategy. The queen returned in “Heroes vs. Villains” (Season 20) as part of the villains tribe, ultimately defeating Parvati Shallow and Russell Hantz by a 6–3–0 jury vote.

“Survivor” may have its highs and lows, but those highs keep fans coming back for more. Who could have known in the summer of 2000 that a reality show about strangers stranded on an island would become one of the most enduring franchises in television history? Fans were first bewitched by that first season, later titled “Survivor: Borneo,” with its cast of colorful characters like Richard Hatch, Rudy Boesch and Sue Hawk. The series became a smash hit and go on to produce 40 seasons, two per year. Above, tour our photos of the 12 best “Survivor” seasons ranked from worst to best. (We’ll update it again after “Survivor: Winners at War” concludes in May 2020.)

As “Survivor: Winners at War,” the 40th season of the landmark reality competition series “Survivor,” continues to heat up we take a look back at some of the most notorious villains to play the game in its first 20 years (see above). Among our top picks are two champions currently competing for their second win and the $2 million cash prize on Season 40.
Without a doubt the nastiest player in series history is Russell Hantz, a two time runner-up in three seasons that was able to find hidden immunity idols without clues and use psychological warfare against his tribe mates in order to further his own game. In his second outing on “Heroes vs. Villains” he made the final tribal council for the second straight time, but received zero votes to win. All the votes went to “Winners at War” players Sandra Diaz-Twine and Parvati Shallow.

Over the past two decades of “Survivor” there have been nearly 40 winners who outwitted, outplayed and outlasted their fellow competitors to take home the $1 million prize. However, let’s not forget all those lovable losers that made a huge impact on the game (and our hearts) but came up short of actually winning. “The Amazing Race” fans are about to be introduced to one of the greatest reality TV heroes of all time: Rupert Boneham. Longtime “Survivor” viewers are already keenly aware of this tie-dye pirate from his four seasons starring on that CBS hit. Though he never claimed victory as the winner of “Survivor,” he did take home a special fan-voted prize of $1 million during 2004’s “America’s Tribal Council.” He’s that beloved.
In the upcoming 31st season of “The Amazing Race,” which will now debut April 17 on CBS, Rupert will be teamed up with his wife Laura Boneham, who previously competed against Rupert on “Survivor: Blood vs. Water” in 2013. Laura finished in 12th place that season, far outlasting her husband as he was the first person voted out of what turned out to be his fourth and final run on the show.

Episode 3 of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction” provided our first big power move of the season, with Chris Underwood becoming the third person voted out of the game. In last week’s winner’s edit breakdown I had Chris at no. 3 due to his involvement in multiple strategic conversations and general likability, but that strategy wound up biting him in the butt as his tribe turned against him for targeting Kelley Wentworth. The third hour largely continued the edits we’ve seen through the first two episodes of the season, with a few notable exceptions. Below you will find my rankings of who has the strongest “winner’s edit” so far on “Survivor: Edge of Extinction.”

Zeke Smith didn't win the title of Sole Survivor, but he has perhaps walked away with something more valuable.

"There is deception here. Deceptions on levels, Jeff [Probst], that these guys don't even understand," Varner said, looking at Smith. "Why haven't you told anyone that you're transgender?"
Varner was promptly eliminated, though the media wasn't so keen to just snuff his torch and move on. In the weeks that followed, both Varner and Smith gave numerous interviews on the topic, starting a conversation about outing, transgender visibility in the media and even whether CBS was right to have aired the footage.
