Fresh off of the release of their new album Only God Was Above Us, Vampire Weekend made a surprise appearance at a Goose show on Wednesday night. To start their second set at the Port Chester, New York, venue The Capitol Theatre, the jam band brought out the indie vets to rip through “Gen-X Cops” and a 30-minute (!) version of “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa.” Stream the entire set below.
“We’re gonna have some special guests come up here,” Goose member Peter Anspach said as the band entered the second hour of their monstrous four-hour-long set. Once Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio, and Chris Thomson took the stage, the two bands launched into a jammy, though relatively faithful rendition of the Only God Was Above Us cut “Gen-x Cops.” Vampire Weekend fan-favorite “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” followed, morphing into a half-hour-long jam of grooves and solos.

Vampire Weekend stopped by The Daily Show to perform their recent song, “Mary Boone,” and to chat with host Michael Kosta. During the artsy performance, frontman Ezra Koenig sat on a stool in front of the other musicians, who were accompanied by a choir as footage of New York City played behind them.
“Mary Boone” comes off the rock band’s new LP, Only God Was Above Us, which is out now. During the interview, the musicians discussed the album, as well as their newly-launched podcast Vampire Campfire, which finds...

Vampire Weekend’s recordings have frequently been characterized by a kind of tidiness, a clean fusion of Ezra Koenig’s pop songwriting smarts and the group’s instrumental economy. The band’s new album Only God Was Above Us offers something different, pivoting away from the brighter, jammier aspects of 2019’s Father of the Bride with a decided bent toward experimentation and surprising, often harsh, new textures. The results showcase a band that, nearly two decades in, is willing to issue a challenge to its fans and produce a soundtrack...

While Vampire Weekend’s prep-school narratives have toyed with subcultural statements and big ideas about youth and love, singer and chief songwriter Ezra Koenig never seems to be revealing much about himself. That admittedly could make the sweeping emotions that the group’s songs tried to invoke feel trapped behind glass, even on a work of pop craftsmanship as stunning as 2013’s Modern Vampires of the City.
Vampire Weekend’s first album in five years and their first with (most of) their original lineup in more than a decade, Only God Was Above Us doesn’t tell us a whole lot more about the interior lives of Koenig, bassist Chris Baio, or drummer Chris Tomson. What it lacks in confessionals, though, it makes up for with a sharp conceit: a Cold War allegory about romance, contrasting references to conflict in Eastern Europe and Russia with domestic issues and memories.

Vampire Weekend are back with “Mary Boone,” the latest single from their forthcoming album Only God Was Above Us.
“Mary Boone” features angelic choirs and lush orchestrations, a drum loop sampled from Soul II Soul’s “Back to Life (However Do You Want Me),” and kaleidoscopic synths that drop in at each wordless chorus. The song’s title refers to the art dealer and collector who became well-known in the New York City art scene during the 1980s.
Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig narrates a scene in which a new inhabitant of the city seeks work under Mary Boone, and later expands the subject to include themes of love lost and change. The song’s official visualizer features the rapper Despot as he drives from New Jersey to New York City through the Lincoln Tunnel. Watch the visual below.

Vampire Weekend have played around with a slightly “punky,” slightly “jammy”side project in their free time, band members Ezra Koenig, Chris Tomson, and Chris Baio told the New York Times.
According to Tomson, the extra-curriculars began as a way to blow off steam during the pandemic. “The world had stopped working and a lot of what we normally do was just not being done,” Tomson recalled. “There was something about just playing with no expectation — to just play with my two very close friends without an agenda.”

Baio added, “It’s very rare for people in a band of our size to be alone together. No engineer, no tour manager, nothing like that. It felt like being at the outset of the band again. And we did that for three years and change, whenever we were all in town.”

Vampire Weekend make sense of how historical examples of cruelty have become “classical” with time on an upbeat new song, “Classical.” The song comes off their upcoming album Only God Was Above Us, due out April 5.
Between frontman Ezra Koenig’s catchy, squeaky guitar melody and Henry Solomon’s wild saxophone solo, Koenig sings about war, peace, and abandoned ruins of temples, describing history as “a bleak sunrise.” The music sort of falls apart at the end, on purpose.

Vampire Weekend have returned with “Classical,” the latest slice of their forthcoming album Only God Was Above Us.
Built from a rustling acoustic guitar line and a cymbal-heavy drum beat from Chris Tomson, “Classical” is more vibrant and restless than Vampire Weekend’s prior singles. “Untrue, unkind, and unnatural/ How the cruel, with time, becomes classical,” Ezra Koenig sings in the pre-chorus, eventually landing on an anthemic, harmony-laden refrain where he asks “Which classical remains?” The song also features a daring, slightly dissonant bridge with a haywire sax solo courtesy of Henry Solomon.

The song also arrives with a music video directed by longtime collaborator Nick Harwood and featuring the band, Ray Suen, drum tech Josh Goldsmith, and A-list producer Ariel Rechtshaid. Throughout the green screen-heavy video, Vampire Weekend performs “Classical” amidst clips of classical European architecture — columns, gothic churches, statues, 800 year-old paintings, and even Stonehenge.

Vampire Weekend are officially back with the announcement of their new album, Only God Was Above Us, out April 5th via Columbia Records.
Marking Vampire Weekend’s first full-length in five years, Only God Was Above Us clocks in at 10 tracks. Inspired by 20th-century New York City, the album was recorded in Manhattan, Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo, with vocalist/guitarist Ezra Koenig sharing production duties with longtime collaborator Ariel Rechtshaid. It was mixed by Dave Fridmann and mastered by Emily Lazar.
Koenig penned the majority of the lyrics to Only God Was Above Us in 2019-2020, and spent the next five years with bandmates Chris Baio and Chris Tomson fleshing out the lyrical and melodic structures. The album is described in a press release as “direct yet complex, showing the band at once at its grittiest, and also at its most beautiful and melodic.”

Phoenix are keeping their collaboration kick going with a remix of their Alpha Zulu cut “All Eyes on Me” that features unlikely guest Pusha T. Check out the track below.
In addition to Pusha’s verses, the “All Eyes on Me” remix features vocals from Benee and production from Chad Hugo. The band shared their emphatic (and very French) gratitude in a press release: “A huge thank you to le Roi Pusha-t — most played artist in our backstage; to Chad Hugo, who always showed up when we were playing in Virginia, it’s about time we worked together! And to Benee, who worked at light speed to make this happen and added some magic. Merci!!!”

Sofia Coppola took a seat at New York’s Bookmarc on Sunday to sign copies of her first book, Sofia Coppola Archive: 1999-2023. The event inspired hundreds to hit the sidewalk and queue up for hours in a line that snaked through the West Village streets while fans waited for their chance to meet the filmmaker and snag an autograph. “It was so nice to meet so many young kids that were all dressed up and excited,” Coppola told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday night, moments after she arrived to a different kind of scene at L.A.’s Chateau Marmont.
There were plenty of youthful attendees, albeit more famous, a frenzy for Archive and everyone was fashionably suited courtesy of Chanel, which hosted the event to celebrate Coppola’s new tome and toast their longtime ambassador, collaborator and friend. But the only line that formed was the one...

Vampire Weekend have revealed they are adding raga singing into their repertoire on their new album. Better yet, the New York indie rockers also promised the project is “close to done.”
In a newsletter (via Vulture) accompanying the first volume of their new vinyl series, drummer Chris Tomson gave fans the lay of the land, saying lead singer Ezra Koenig “took a raga singing lesson with Terry Riley in rural Japan and wrote what he considers to be 7 of his all-time top 10 best songs.” Whether or not the band is replacing guitars with sitars is currently unknown.
Tomson went on to describe being able to “connect, jawbone, and jam” with his bandmates without any responsibilities and compared it to their formation at Columbia University. “I personally found an immense peace and pleasure from creating with the guys like we had in the Ruggles days,” he wrote. “The vibe was strong.

Vampire Weekend have released a vinyl-only live album called Frog on the Bass Drum Vol. 01, which pulls audio from a June 2019 show in Indianapolis where there was, in fact, a frog pictured on their bass drum.
The setlist from the show featured songs from all four albums of their discography — 2008’s self-titled debut, Contra, Modern Vampires of the City, and Father of the Bride — plus the official release of a 10-minute long cover of Bob Dylan’s Infidels track “Jokerman.” To boot, vocalist Ezra Koenig dropped a quick flow from “Pizza Party,” the debut track from L’Homme Run, the college rap group he formed with Vampire Weekend drummer Chris Tomson.
Frog on the Bass Drum Vol. 01 also comes with the band’s Quarterly Report newsletter. See the artwork and tracklist below.

Phoenix have shared their second-ever formal collaboration today, recruiting Clairo for a remix of “After Midnight,” a standout track from the band’s recent album Alpha Zulu.
Though the two artists are longtime fans of each other, it took a few connections before they finally crossed paths: Phoenix met Clairo through Rostam Batmanglij, who produced the indie pop star’s debut album Immunity and whose former Vampire Weekend bandmate Ezra Koenig contributed vocals to the Alpha Zulu single “Tonight” (which we named Song of the Week).
“We’ve loved Claire since day one!” Phoenix share in a press release. “What a treat it is to have her sing with us! We hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do.” Clairo adds: “I’ve been a massive fan of Phoenix for as long as I can remember, and I’m very grateful that they asked me to sing on this remix.

“Woo-ha! Singing Ha-lle-lu-jah!” yelps Thomas Mars on the title track of Phoenix’s seventh album, Alpha Zulu. The tensely sprung indie-pop groove was apparently inspired by a bout of airplane turbulence – during which Mars heard the pilot repeating the words “alpha zulu”. And the twitchy-twang of the song brilliantly captures the strange sensation of exhilaration-anxiety you get on a bumpy flight: a stomach-dropper of a bass line, glitchy exhalations from the keyboard, and the sweet thermals of vocal melody. Meanwhile, Mars blurts out surreal and surrendering lines: “Pray to your God/ Cover your lies… There’s a purple cloud in the consommé, ouais!… Why choose your body over time?”

Strange happenings are afoot in London in the new Netflix series “The Irregulars.” Scrapes with the metaphysical in and around the busy streets of Victorian England, all sussed out with a mix of deduction and intuition is the provenance of many a Sherlock Holmes story. Though “The Irregulars” is far from the first TV series to take the classic Holmes mythology and subvert it for its own purpose, none of the others have alighted on quite the mixture that powers this new eight-episode season.
Rather than foreground any of the central figures in the standard Doyle repertoire, this fashions a loose-knit group of five purpose-seeking teenagers who stumble into the same circles that the violin-playing literary icon usually travels through. They’re led by a pair of sisters, Beatrice (Thaddea Graham) and Jessie (Darci Shaw), each looking to fashion a new path in life after a harsh childhood spent mostly in a workhouse.

Jack Antonoff will honor his native state with a new conversation series. The musician and producer kicked off the first episode with Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig.
The segment features Antonoff and Koening discussing their home state and the impact The Sopranos had on it. “That show belongs to humanity,” Koening says. “It’s an important work of art, it belongs to everybody. But when I think about something that really belongs to the Tri-state area, it’s the opening credits. I think it’s maybe one of the best opening sequences of all time.

Ezra Koenig performed a solo medley of songs from Vampire Weekend’s most recent album, Father of the Bride, on The Tonight Show Tuesday.
Koenig set up in his home music room — which was packed with guitars, synthesizers and other equipment — and performed the makeshift, three-song suite with just piano accompaniment. He opened with the swooning refrain of “Flower Moon” before jumping to the rollicking “Stranger,” then closed with a punchy rendition of “Big Blue.”

Vampire Weekend shared three songs — including one that features Jude Law reading a 19th century Scottish poem — that were previously only available on the Japanese edition of their 2019 album, Father of the Bride.
Of the three tracks, only “Houston Dubai” is an original, and it is vintage Vampire Weekend. It boasts a peppy guitar strum, stomp-and-clap percussion and lyrics from Ezra Koenig that tackle strained love, sleepless delirium and the ennui of late capitalism as he chronicles the travels of a businessman between the two titular, oil-rich cities.

In November 2019, Ariana Grande posted a photo with Bernie Sanders, exclaiming “My Guy,” while telling her fans that she promised to “never smile this hard again.” Just like that, the most important part of the 2020 Democratic race had officially begun: the musicians’ primary. Some stars have performed at rallies, supporting their candidates of choice with a Bob Dylan cover (or two), while others have used social media to make their endorsements known. Here are the most notable musical endorsements for each major candidate.

JamBase shared a fan-shot video of the performance in which Anastasio turns the lush tune into acoustic ballad. “Oh, the sermons are the first to rest/ Smoke on Sundays when youʼre drunk and dressed/ Out the hollows where the swallow nests,” Anastasio sang over nimble finger picking, giving a sense of what “Towers” might’ve sounded like had Bon Iver recorded it during the For Emma, Forever Ago era.
