Four survivor-led advocacy organizations — including those founded by former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson and California Governor Gavin Newsom’s wife and filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom — published a letter and report on Wednesday calling for the music business to take further action regarding sexual misconduct across the industry.
The report, titled “Sound Off: The Make Music Safe Report” compiled decades of previously disclosed allegations against over two dozen prominent artists and industry executives such as Sean “Diddy” Combs, Axl Rose, Anti-Flag’s Justin Geever, composer Danny Elfman, former Def Jam head Russell Simmons,...

The annual pre-Grammy party by music mogul Clive Davis has been moved for the second year in a row.
The star-studded celebration had been held the night before the ceremony each year since 1975. But it was moved online last year because of the pandemic and broken into two parts, the second of which was held after the actual Grammys because of Davis’s illness with Bell’s Palsy.
Now, the 2022 edition has also been moved, this time to 2023. The Grammy Awards itself has been moved from its planned dates in Los Angeles to April 3 in Las Vegas, which allegedly complicated all matters related to the Clive Davis bash.
“Due to the logistical obstacles caused by the ongoing pandemic, including the unavailability of an appropriate venue, we have decided to postpone the 2022 Pre-Grammy Gala,” Davis and Academy CEO Harvey Mason, jr. said in a statement. “We will resume the celebration next...

Updated: As expected, the Grammy Awards have been postponed due to coronavirus-related concerns, an Academy spokesperson has confirmed to Variety. No new date has been confirmed as of yet.
While the 2022 show had been moving full speed ahead to take place on Jan. 31 before a full audience at its traditional venue, the Crypto.com Arena (formerly known as the Staples Center) in downtown Los Angeles, the recent Covid-19 surge has caused the postponement or cancellation of multiple events across the country. Sources tell Variety that even though the Crypto.com Arena has a basketball or hockey game or a concert booked nearly every night until mid-April, enough artists and executives voiced reluctance about appearing to convince the Academy to postpone the show.
Sources close to the situation also tell Variety that the show will probably move to April or May, which would seem to rule out holding it at the Crypto.

Some of the U.K. entertainment industry’s best-known names have been awarded the country’s highest honors by the Queen.
Outgoing James Bond star Daniel Craig was honored alongside longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson (pictured above with Craig) on the Queen’s New Year Honours list.
Craig, who lives in the U.S., was honored on the ‘overseas and international list’ making him a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (Cmg) — the very same honor the fictional 007 holds in the books. Craig was awarded his Cmg for services to film and theater.
Broccoli and Wilson, meanwhile, were awarded CBEs (which stands for Commanders of the Order of the British Empire) for services to film, drama, philanthropy and skills alongside director Paul Greengrass (“Bourne” trilogy), who received his for services to the arts, and author Anthony Horowitz (the “Alex Rider” series) for services to literature.

The U.S. may be the biggest recorded music market on the planet — it generates 37 percent of the globe’s trade revenues, according to 2020 data from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry — but its music business is curiously un-American.
Whether due to historical precedent or recent deals, most of the country’s biggest rights-holding entities are currently owned by players that do not ground themselves on U.S. soil. For instance, Sony Music Group is wholly owned, via Sony Corporation of America, by Sony Group Corp in Tokyo; BMG...

I have genuinely lost count of the number of high-ranking Sony Music executives over the past decade who have sold me the “One Sony” dream.
If that phrase is news to you, allow me to enlighten: In a bid to differentiate itself from its key competition (Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group), Sony’s recorded music division has long tried to spin the idea that it is uniquely connected to Sony Corp’s other powerful owned-media divisions – most particularly Sony Pictures (movies and TV) and Sony Game & Network Services (including PlayStation).

Loads of love — and London accents — filled Hollywood Boulevard on Wednesday, Aug. 22, for Simon Cowell’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star dedication ceremony. The “America’s Got Talent” creator and judge, whose credits also include launching “The X Factor” and serving nine seasons on “American Idol,” was welcomed by scores of fans – not coincidentally, “Agt” was taping its semifinal round feet away in the Dolby theater – but it was the constellation of stars from music and beyond that made it something other than Wednesday in Hollywood.
As Cowell took the podium, he cracked, “Why did this take so long?” And offered: “If anyone says fame is a bad thing, I don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s the best thing in the world.”
There was plenty of humility too, however as Cowell, visibly moved by the ceremony, honored his late parents and thanked friends, family and colleagues...

Sony Music has entered into a formal partnership with Tha Lights Global, the company co-founded by Dooney Battle, best known for managing Lil Pump, Variety has learned. The multi-million-dollar deal will align Tlg with Sony Music and allow the label to place or distribute its artists through any of Sony’s own properties, among them Columbia, Epic and RCA Records.
The deal was said to involve multiple bidders and a price tag that neared $10 million, though some sources place the final tally at nearly twice that figure. Sony eyed the venture as a way to fortify its efforts in the Urban realm, say insiders, viewing Hlg as a forward-thinking, hip-hop-centric, youth-oriented hub with a significant social media footprint thanks to a stable of influencer talent.
Whispers of an impending deal had been floated for some time as Tlg artist Dominic Fike was reported to be signing with Sony, which Variety has confirmed.

The song was king at last night’s 66th annual Bmi Pop Awards held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills honoring Mark Ronson. The celebrated five-time Grammy winning artist/producer/songwriter is the first to receive the Bmi Champion Award at the ceremony in recognition not only of his creative track record, but also for his philanthropy, including his patronage of the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which works to provide a musical alternative to drugs for at-risk youth.
“This is like my bar mitzvah, except there are fewer family members,” joked Ronson on the red carpet. “But it might be equally embarrassing. I was surprised when my manager Brandon [Creed] told me I’d be getting this award. It doesn’t seem like I’ve achieved that much. But I’m happy to accept it it. In a room full of songwriters, it’s all your peers, which is different from most awards.

As part of a strong Sony earnings report for its 2017-18 fiscal year (which ended on March 31) the company’s music division’s revenue rose more than 12% to around $4.03 billion in Rob Stringer’s first year at the helm as CEO. Streaming revenues soared more than 37% to $1.8 billion, comprising more than 44% of the music division’s total.
Physical sales were also up, rising nearly $10 million to $1.20 billion. While the company did not break down those numbers, a source said they were driven by a strong showing in Japan, where physical sales remain strong, as well as a continued uptick in vinyl sales; physical sales overall are expected to continue their gradual downward trajectory. Download revenues continued to fall, dropping 18% to just under $450 million.
The company singled out Pink’s “Beautiful Trauma,” DJ Khaled’s “Grateful” and Camila Cabello’s “Camila” as its top-selling albums.

12 Tone, Doug Morris’ new music company, will take up residence in the New York Times Building in August, Variety has learned. The label will officially launch sometime after Morris, the only person to be the top executive at all three major music companies, exits his post as non-executive chairman of Sony Music Entertainment. Dr. Dre-affiliated rapper/producer Anderson.Paak is among the label’s first signings, as first reported by Hits.
Former Def Jam CEO Steve Bartels, who stepped down at the end of 2017, has already joined Morris’ senior team, insiders confirmed to Variety. While some have reported that the new label is part of an unspecified partnership with Apple, a source close to the situation told Variety that those rumors are untrue and that Apple has no equity or investment in Morris’ endeavor.

2013 has been a huge year for pop music, and Beyoncé Knowles intends to make just as big an impact on 2014 with her upcoming album.
According to Columbia Records chairman Rob Stringer, the pop queen's new song list will hit the market in the near future, as he detailed the label's 2014 schedule saying, "At some point, Beyoncé will put a record out, and when she does, it will be monumental."
The new record will follow-up the 32-year-old's hit album, 4, and although Stringer offered no details on a release date, we have seen that Beyonce has been hard at work, both with her performance at Super Bowl Xlvii, and on her world trip tour.
This past summer, the "Single Ladies'" collaborator Ne-Yo said of her effort, as well as the effort of her fellow cohorts, "They're still trying to figure out what they want that to be, which I'm not mad at.
