Running from January 1st to 7th, the Hong Kong Open returns to the Atp Tour after a 21-year absence, and the draw for the 2024 edition has been released.
With three Top 20 players in the field, one of whom is a top tenner, this Atp 250 event is not bereft of star power. World No.5 Andrey Rublev is the biggest name at Victoria Park as he looks to refine his game ahead of the year's first Grand Slam at the Australian Open.
The Russian tends to play at a very decent level in the season's opening week and has a very nice draw on his Hong Kong debut. Rublev has a bye in the opening round as the top seed and doesn't know his second-round opponent yet.
He'll await the winner of the match between Pedro Cachin and a qualifier. Rublev could have his hands full by the quarterfinal stage should he get there.

Many tennis players succeed in their junior days and win a Grand Slam in that category, but does it guarantee success on the main Tour?
Forming any rapid conclusions based on junior Grand Slam results is risky business. Of the active Wta players who have won a junior Grand Slam until 2020, only six of them - from a list of 47 players - have won a major on the main tour.
Almost half of these 47 players achieved a career-best ranking of World No. 20 or higher. From the same data, it is striking that most players who won one of Roland Garros or Wimbledon went on to scale even greater heights at the Wta level.
About 16 players who won either of those tournaments broke the Top 20 at some point. This includes players like Iga Swiatek, Simona Halep, Ons Jabeur, Coco Gauff, Paula Badosa, Belinda Bencic, and Elina Svitolina.

The Kooyong Classic has been a longstanding tennis exhibition played ahead of the Australian Open, and the upcoming edition will feature some big names such as Jannik Sinner, Holger Rune, and Casper Ruud.
The Kooyong Exhibition has been a longstanding exhibition event in Melbourne since 1988. The exhibition has been held 32 times so far, with the most recent one being held last year. It was the first since 2019 as the exhibition wasn't played during the pandemic.

After a 21-year absence, the Hong Kong Open will return to Victoria Park Tennis Centre to herald the start of the 2024 men's tennis season.
Running from January 1st to 7th, this tournament will be an essential destination for the Atp players looking to finetune their games in the buildup to the season's first Grand Slam at the Australian Open.
The Hong Kong Open was a prominent event in the 90s with a gaudy list of former champions. Whoever wins the 2024 edition is primed to etch his name among some of the game's greats on the honor roll.

Rafael Nadal has officially entered the 2024 Australian Open, and he did so without a wild card, using his protected ranking instead.
The last time Rafael Nadal competed in an official match was earlier this year at the Australian Open. He was facing Mackenzie McDonald, who bested Nadal in three sets after the Spaniard injured himself while extending to get to a ball.
Since then, Nadal has been on a comeback, trying to find a way to return to the courts. He didn't do it in time for Roland Garros and eventually underwent surgery to address the issues.
The comeback will happen in about a month at the Brisbane International, after which he'll play at the Australian Open. Due to his inactivity, Nadal dropped in the Atp Rankings all the way down to 664, which is where he's ranked right now.

The year-end Utr (Universal Tennis Rating) rankings have raised many eyebrows, with some surprising inclusions of Rafael Nadal and Marin Cilic in the Top 10.
The Utr is a critical metric in evaluating a player's overall skill on a single 16-point scale. Still, it remains a subjective method to assess player's strengths based on recent performances. This is highlighted by the latest rankings, where Spain's Rafael Nadal ranked fourth.
Nadal, 37, has been out of action for a year and will rejoin the tour in Brisbane next season. His last outing was in January 2023, when Mackenzie McDonald knocked him out of the Australian Open. He has been nursing a hip injury since and underwent surgery in June.
Because of his inactivity, his official Atp ranking cascaded to its lowest point in two decades (currently ranked 664th). However, he has a 16.27 Utr rating, higher than Carlos Alcaraz's, the World No. 2, which has a 16.24 rating.

Throughout his glorious career, Novak Djokovic became the ultimate comeback king, but not on Saturday in a crucial Davis Cup rubber.
The Serbian would have despised playing the same opponent for the third time in as many weeks. The man on the opposite side of the net was Jannik Sinner who faced Djokovic twice at the Atp Finals this past week in Turin. Sinner won the battle there but lost the war.
But this time, it was much more than winning an Atp title. It was a chance to cement their legacies for their respective countries at the oldest team competition in tennis. Djokovic has made a habit of winning tennis matches from match point down, but he was given a taste of his own medicine by Sinner.

Tennis is a pretty lucrative sport if you can get to the top, and Andrey Rublev proved it yet again by passing $20 million in career earnings.

It's going to be his fourth time at the event, proving that he's been Top 8 for a fourth consecutive year. He's also won a couple of trophies along the way, 14 to be precise, some of which have been huge, like the Masters he won earlier this year.
As the sport exploded in popularity over the years, so did the earnings increase. There were plenty of great players in the past. However, the prize money wasn't as good as it's now, which is they the top earners list is mostly dominated...

Frances Tiafoe is very motivated ahead of the 2023 Davis Cup in the beautiful seaside town of Split, Croatia.
Visiting Split is never a bad idea, but for Tiafoe, it will be all business as he looks to power his nation past the Croatian side in a bid for the knockout stages of the Davis Cup Final. The USA has a strong team, but they must book their place first.
The European nation is hosting its group in Split, hoping to make it through. It will be tough without top player Marin Cilic, who has been injured pretty much all yea r, and Borna Coric, who withdrew his participation. Carlos Alcaraz 's decision to skip practice days at the US Open has caused confusion and intrigue.
It comes after the Atp 's world number one employed the same tactic leading up to his upcoming quarter-final match against Alexander Zverev. Alcaraz has shown his consistency yet again so far at the 2023 US Open as the Spanish player raced to the final eight and dropped just one set in the process.

Before the victory over Arnaldi and ahead of his clash with Zverev on Wednesday, Alcaraz was not training on the courts, and the world number one explained to the official Atp website his reasoning behind the move.

Former US Open champion Marin Cilic won't be playing at the 2023 US Open due to an injury setback which will keep him away from the courts for a little longer.
Marin Cilic has only played two matches so far this year as he started his year traditionally in India, playing at the Atp event in Pune. He won his opening round match against Roberto Carballes Baena but pulled out of the event before his 2nd round match against Tallon Griekspoor.
The reason for the withdrawal was a knee injury, one that kept him away from the courts for a very long time. Dealing with knee injuries is always tough, especially at his age, where everything heals slower, and is more prone to re-injury.

Former Atp world number three Marin Cilic will return to action for the first time since January at this week's Croatia Open in Umag.
Cilic has featured in just one match this season, a three-set win over Roberto Carballes Baena in Pune in the opening week of the season. He pulled out from the event altogether before his next outing due to a knee injury. And Cilic, on the advice of doctors, underwent successful knee surgery in January .
The big-hitting Croat spent the last six months on the sidelines recovering. He started light training in March, and was making sporadic progress in his rehabilitation in mid-April, where he shared pictures of himself on a tennis court for the first time since surgery.
He was initially scheduled to return to action on grass at the Rosmalen Championships. But he withdrew before the event citing the need for more time in order to attain peak fitness levels.

The 2023 Croatia Open in Umag is an Atp 250 clay-court event and it will offer 562,815€ in prize money .
Running from July 24th to 30th, the tournament in Umag, Croatia, will welcome players that missed the clay-courts during the short but intense grass-court part of the season. Over the past two years, the event was marked by presence of youngsters.
In 2021, it was won by Carlos Alcaraz, and in 2022, Jannik Sinner stunned the Spaniard in the final . Neither of them will compete in 2023, but it will be another member of the so-called NextGen Big Three that will be the top name at the event, Holger Rune .
After his two fellow youngsters won the tournament in the past, Rune will surely want to add his name to the list of champions. He leads the entry list for the 2023 Croatia Open in Umag , but on the way to the final, he can meet even Grand Slam champions.

Kei Nishikori has revealed further details about his schedule on the Atp Challenger Tour, with two more competition entries announced.
Nishikori made a remarkable return to professional tennis last week as the former world number four went on to win the Palmas del Mar Challenger event . It was the Japan veteran's first competition entry since October 2021 and he defeated Michael Zheng across two sets in the final.
It was a much-anticipated moment for Nishikori, who has suffered multiple setbacks and postponed several comeback attempts across the past 20 months. However, in an attempt to build on his rediscovered success, the 33-year-old announced on his official Twitter channel that he will be entering two more Challenger events - the Cranbrook Tennis Classic and the Chicago Men’s Challenger.

Paul McNamee considers Novak Djokovic the greatest of all time but he hasn't called him that yet out of respect to Rafael Nadal.
There aren't many great things about the era of the Big Three ending, but one could be that the Goat debate won't be recycled as much. Or so you think. The reality is that it's going to be a question for as long as tennis is being played.
It doesn't matter whether Djokovic dismisses it , it doesn't matter whether Nadal 'doesn't care' about being Goat , it's never going to go away as a topic. Unless something drastic happens which of course is possible no matter how likely. After Djokovic won the 23rd, the topic resurfaced again. It always happens after every grand slam because every grand slam alters the legacy of all players involved.

Former Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic won't make his return at the 2023 Libema Open even though his return is near.
Marin Cilic has been away from tennis for a while after undergoing knee surgery earlier this year . It came after the Croatian announced his withdrawal from the Australian Ope n due to the injury. His return won't be happening at the Libema Open even though that was the initial plan.
It's coming though as the Croatian posted an update on social media where he confirmed that a competitive return is near but won't be happening this year. There is virtually no chance that Cilic doesn't play at least one warm-up before Wimbledon.
Hey guys! Quick update: Even though my team and I made the difficult decision to skip @libemaopen next week, I am very close to a return to competitive tennis and eager to play tournaments. My knee has been responding...

Paris, May 29 (Ians) Former Champion Novak Djokovic started his campaign to capture a record 23rd Grand Slam title and the World No.1 ranking with a comprehensive win in the men’s singles first round at the French Open here on Monday.

Wimbledon organisers have sought to re-assure spectators over potential interruptions from climate change activists ahead of the 2023 competition.
Recent tennis events have already seen incidents of protests in the last year, with a man bursting onto the court and setting his arm on fire during a 2022 Laver Cup match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Diego Schwartzman in September. In addition, a French Open tie between Marin Cilic and Casper Ruud was suspended for 15 minutes when a protestor tied herself to the net.
Throughout 2023, sports events in the UK have also been delayed by climate change activists as the Grand National and the snooker World Championships have been affected by campaigners. But, speaking ahead of Wimbledon 2023, Chief Executive of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Sally Bolton, said procedures are in place to keep attendees safe.

After good news, there is bad news for Nick Kyrgios as he was forced to pull out of the 2023 Italian Open in Rome.
Only yesterday, it was announced that the 27-year-old Australian will rejoin Team World for the 2023 Laver Cup. Today, another announcement came, this time marking Kyrgios' withdrawal from the 2023 Italian Open in Rome, which is an Atp 1000 event in the Italian capital on clay and runs from May 10th to 21st.
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist underwent knee surgery which was initially celebrated as a great success. Kyrgios wanted to return already at the Indian Wells, but after missing the Sunshine Double, he also missed the Madrid Open and now another Atp 1000 event will be played without the Australian.
Yet, it's not unusual for Kyrgios to skip these events. He isn't a big fan of clay and the last time he played in Madrid and Rome was in 2019, when he...

The Atp Tour soon moves to the clay courts and so the first Masters event of the season on this surface is inevitable as the entry list was released for the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Last year, Stefanos Tsitsipas lifted the trophy at the Monte-Carlo Country Club to win for the second consecutive time, and become the first to do so since Rafael Nadal in 2017. Both of them will compete also in 2023, as the Spaniard will try to expand his collection of 11 trophies from this event, which runs from April 9th to 16th in 2023.
But the field will be as competitive as ever this year. Novak Djokovic, who was banned from entering the United States and competing at the Sunshine Double, will play his first event in a while and he will be motivated to add to his two titles in Monte Carlo.

The ceremony and broadcast of the 48th edition of the French Cesar’s awards were interrupted briefly on Friday night after a climate change activist suddenly appeared on stage.
The woman wearing a T-shirt bearing the slogan “We have 761 days left” came into the shot on stage just as French actors Ahmed Sylla and Léa Drucker were about to present the prize for Best Male Newcomer.
The broadcast cut to a trailer for a matter of minutes before returning to the live show once the woman had been removed and then continued as if nothing had happened.
A French climate change group called Dernière Rénovation later claimed responsibility for the action on the social networks.

Tel Aviv (Israel), Oct 3 (Ians) World No 7 and top seed Novak Djokovic defeated second seed Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the Tel Aviv Open 2022 title here on Sunday.
With the victory, the Serbian became the first man to win a title on hard, clay (Rome) and grass courts (Wimbledon) this season.
Djokovic did not lose a set at the indoor hard-court Atp 250, where he was never in difficulty against a lineup of dangerous opponents. The 35-year-old claimed his third tour-level crown of 2022 and the 89th of his career.
Cilic entered the final having faced just four break points all week, but he was under pressure on serve throughout the championship clash. Djokovic found great depth on his returns against the big-serving Croatian, which set the tone.
Djokovic constantly threatened his opponent’s serve with his play from the back of the court, while he dominated his own service games behind his first serve.

Cincinnati, Aug 19 (Ians) Two of the top-10 seeds at the Western & Southern Open collided on Thursday as Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Jannik Sinner 2-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1.
It was Sinner who looked sharpest early, taking the first three games of the opening set before securing a double break, but while Auger-Aliassime struggled to deal with the Italian’s serve early on, it was not the case as the match wore on, Dpa reports.
Sinner won 80 per cent (12-of-15) of his first serve points in the first set, but that number dwindled down to 62 per cent in the second and 50 per cent in the third as Auger-Aliassime grew into the contest and stormed home late.
Auger-Aliassime will face the in-form Borna Coric in the quarter-finals after the Croatian backed up his shock upset win against Rafael Nadal by defeating 15th seed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 6-3.
