Amanda Shires explores the subconscious in her new song “Deciphering Dreams,” the first preview of her follow-up to 2018’s To the Sunset.
Announcing itself with a tumble of drums and a beefed-up guitar riff courtesy of Jason Isbell, the Dave Cobb-produced “Deciphering Dreams” picks up on the danceable indie-rock aesthetics of To the Sunset and presses the accelerator. Wordless, “Ring My Bell”-esque melodies give way to Shires’ nocturnal visions: “You opened your mouth, tried to speak, but your voice was just a flutter of moths,” she sings, before soaring upward in the chorus hook.

Tim Hanseroth is sitting on a chair in Brandi Carlile’s Seattle-area home studio, strumming his guitar while Carlile glances over pensively from the corner of her brown leather couch, her arms hugging her knees. They’re gathered in this rather idyllic place — right across the driveway from the home Carlile shares with her wife and daughters, shrouded by evergreens like a treehouse in Narnia — to produce a new record for the Secret Sisters, a.k.a Alabama’s Laura and Lydia Rogers. On this misty afternoon, and fueled by...

Nothing spoils a family gathering quite like politics, and no movie has captured the way such debates can turn ugly quite like Ike Barinholtz’s “The Oath,” an impressively out-there feature debut in which no-win arguments over a divisive new government policy escalate into a full-blown hostage crisis, turning what should have been a mild-mannered Thanksgiving weekend into a dark and potentially deadly misunderstanding. Part satire, part thriller — and only partway satisfying the potential of a film so boldly overt in its critique of the zeitgeist — “The Oath” kicks off with the all-too-plausible premise that the White House is encouraging all Americans to sign a statement of loyalty to the president, then flashes forward to just days before the deadline.
The administration has given citizens until Black Friday to pledge their allegiance, all but ensuring that families whose political views don’t align perfectly are in for the most awkward Turkey Day of their lives.

Extreme Weight Loss' personal trainer Chris Powell was involved in a serious car accident yesterday with his wife Heidi and 3-year-old son Cash — and the aftermath is pretty scary.
The 34-year-old ABC star posted pictures on his Instagram and described the terrifying incident. "We were rear ended by a car doing approx. 45 mph while we were at a complete stop," he writes. "One of the most terrifying experiences of my life was the moment before I turned around to check on Cash, who was screaming behind me."

A former champion athlete faced the hardest challenge of her life on the latest episode of "Extreme Weight Loss." Cassandra was, at one time, the national champion in shot put. After college, though, she admitted that she turned to food as an emotional release.
Since then -- and Cassandra was now 45 years old -- she'd gained almost 200 pounds, weighing in at 364 pounds. The weight gain really got out of control after the failure of her marriage. Cassandra said she became a hermit. But it was time, and she was ready to change all of that.
Chris Powell had another challenge for her beyond her body transformation. Halfway through their year together, he challenged her to go to a speed dating event. This was her first big dating event since her divorce.

Chris Powell helped 26-year-old Ashley bounce back from a devastating tragedy on "Extreme Weight Loss." Making it even worse for her, the tragic loss was directly related to her weight.
A few years ago, Ashley was pregnant with her first child. Because she was 200 pounds overweight, the pregnancy went terribly wrong. She delivered four months early, and the baby passed away just hours after the delivery.
“Because of me and because of my body, my mom doesn’t have her grandbaby, and my husband doesn’t have his daughter, and my sisters don’t have their niece," Ashley said. "And it’s because of me and the lifestyle that I chose.”
She was able to have a successful pregnancy following this, but she and her husband wanted more children. In order to lower the risks each time, Ashley needed to lose weight. With this motivation, and Powell's help, she was able to do just that.

Mike's weight had reached a point of critical danger on "Extreme Weight Loss." At one time, he was a college football player and a bodybuilder. Now, at 49-years old, Mike tipped the scales at 417 pounds. His weight was impacting his life from minor things, like not fitting in furniture, to major things. He now avoided all social events.
He wanted to lose the weight and get healthy so he would be around to see his kids grow up, and Mike proved he was deadly serious in his commitment. The show follows participants for a year to see how much trainer Chris Powell can help them change their lives. Mike took the reigns of his own transformation and shed more than half his body weight in just nine months. Chris Powell took on a profession with one of the highest obesity rates on "Extreme Weight Loss." Trina was a 46-year-old nurse who admitted that she used food as a coping mechanism for depression. She especially binged whenever her mother put her down. So severe was her binging, that she gained 32 pounds over three weeks at one point while working with Chris.
But Trina got back on track, and her progress and commitment even inspired several of her co-workers. Six of her fellow nurses joined her with weight loss journeys of their own, which was more than Chris could have hoped for.

Mehrbod was 300 pounds overweight and desperately wanted help to get in shape. He admitted to Chris Powell on "Extreme Weight Loss" that he had a problem with food addiction. He wanted to drop the weight so he could start a healthy lifestyle with his girlfriend.

Trainer Chris Powell knows a thing or two about saving lives. He also knows that the kinds of full-body transformations he helps people achieve on "Extreme Weight Loss" are as much a mental journey as they are a physical one. Each Tuesday on ABC's "Extreme Weight Loss," trainer Chris Powell is the physical, mental and emotional coach for severely obese individuals who are tracked over a year as they combine diet, exercise and motivation to lose half their body weight.
This is not the only weight loss show out there, and Powell's isn't the only approach. But one thing he doesn't ever want to do is humiliate or punish the people he works with.
"I disagree with that so strongly," he tells Zap2it."It makes my stomach hurt. The folks we work with, there's already enough shame. Shame fuels the addiction cycle, so it needs to be broken right off the bat.

Chris Powell was tasked with helping Jason and Rachel save their marriage -- as well as lose weight -- on the latest episode of "Extreme Weight Loss." The couple were on the brink of divorce, but they wanted to find a way to save their marriage, as well as lose weight, for the sake of their 5-year-old twins.
The pair were a combined 350 lbs. overweight. Neither of them carried that weight when they got married 18 years ago, so it was symbolic of their struggles and the darker side of their fractured marriage. But the "Extreme Weight Loss" process isn't an easy one, and at times it looked like this experience would only push them further apart.
Jason struggled with self-doubt, not just about the workout but about holding his family together and even about his job. Chris helped talk him through the emotional struggles to get him back on track with his weight loss goals.

On the season premiere of “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition,” trainer Chris Powell met 22-year-old twins Becca and David, who had been struggling with their weight for years.
The twins blamed their weight problem -- Becca weighed 398 lbs. and David weighed 470 lbs. -- on their parents' divorce, which happened when the twins were teenagers. David said his lack of relationship with his father even led to a suicide attempt, but an unexpected call from his dad on the night of the attempt stopped him and he got the chance to thank his father on the show.
“You told me that you loved me and I hadn’t heard that in so long. But it was like all I needed at the time,” David told his dad Dan, who said he was proud of his son's strength.
Chris was able to whip the twins into shape, leading to a combined weight loss of 418 lbs.

ABC's new sitcom, How to Live with Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life), had a painfully long title and has already been cancelled. Did the poor ratings have anything to do with the long title? As one who has had to write this awkward title more than a few times, I kinda secretly hope so.
Perhaps ABC has learned their lesson? The network has announced that they're shortening the name of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition to simply Extreme Weight Loss.
Whatever you want to call it, the third season of the reality series starts on Tuesday, May 28th. The network has 13 episodes this time, the show's largest installment order to date.

E! News is happy to report that all is well at the home of Chris Powell, the star of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, after his young son and nanny were the victims of a carjacking. Powell's wife, Heidi, confirms that alleged gang member Jasper Stewart, 31, carjacked their SUV on Friday in Mesa, Ariz., while 15-month-old Cash and their nanny Kaitlyn McGrath were in it. "He told Kaitlyn to get out of the car or he was going to kill them," Heidi told E! News this morning. "Luckily, she was able to grab Cash and get out of the car right away." At the time of the incident, Heidi was just up the block getting her hair done at a friend's home. Cops subsequently found the SUV...

In quite possibly the most impressive transformation yet, Jarvez Hall took the reigns of his own future on "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition" (Sun., 9 p.m. Et on ABC). The 28-year old husband said he agreed to take on this journey of change for his wife.
"I don’t want my wife watch me die. I want her to look at me as her hero," Hall said. "And I can’t be that hero if I’m letting this weight stop me."
He didn't let his weight even slow him down. Hall started his weight loss adventure clocking in at 548 pounds, and after a year of working with trainer Chris Powell, he dropped nearly half his body weight. That's enough to win almost any season of "The Biggest Loser."
In the end, Hall weighed in at a practically svelte 281 pounds, down 32" on his waistline. Even more exciting for him, he...

Zap2it: "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition" is a show is all about transforming. What do people need to do to make that happen?
Chris Powell: They need to believe. Without a doubt that is the magic ingredient. I cannot provide it. It comes from within and happens over time.
Zap2it: Besides weight, what qualities do you seek in candidates?
Chris Powell: They truly desire it and [say], "I am willing to be authentic and let my guard down." Another thing I look for, and this makes my job easy, is when people have those pivotal moments -- they begin to believe in themselves. And if I come across someone who believes in themselves, I donʼt have to coach anymore. Here is your exercise program and your nutrition program.

On Sunday night's episode of "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition" (Sun., 9 p.m. Et on ABC) viewers met Jacqui.
The 30-year-old office worker weighed 355 lbs and was desperate to lose weight and start a family. Her long battle with weight and body image had started when she was raped at the age of 14.
With the help of fitness expert Chris Powell, Jacqui embarked on a year-long journey to fight the flab.
She even quit her job to concentrate on her fitness plan, with the full support of her firefighter husband, Shawn. He said her weight loss journey was "far more important than this particular job."
At the end of a grueling year it turned out that all of Jacqui's hard work was worth it. She had lost a whopping 207 lbs and said she felt like she'd been freed from prison.

Trainer and transformation specialist, Chris Powell is back with another season of one of my favorite summer shows, Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition. Season two returned with a special two hour broadcast. The first participant of the season, 49 year old unemployed Tony came into Powell’s care at 398 lbs. Yearning for a healthy entrance into his 50s and upcoming second marriage while worrying about one of his children hanging on for his life, Tony is in for quite a challenging year long weight loss journey.
As per usual, Powell moved in with his subject, Tony and fiance, Leslie, after renovating the house with a home gym and a healthy kitchen. Powell’s role as a live in trainer for one month in the twelve month transformation was the icing on the cake for this guy. Powell was thrilled with Tony’s ease with running. What a talent wasted all of these years.

Tony was spotlighted in the season premiere of "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition" (Sun., 9 p.m. Et on ABC), and he easily had one of the most challenging struggles of anyone who has ever tried to lose weight. During his very first workout with Chris Powell, he got a phone call that his son, who was stricken with cerebral palsy, was dying.
But Tony powered through, using his son's odds-defying life as motivation to regain control of his life. As his year working with Powell progressed, Tony broke up with his fiancee because she didn't support his weight-loss goals, and even wound up homeless for a period of time. And ultimately, his son did pass away.
But throughout everything, Tony stayed committed to his weight loss, and had amazing results because of his resolve and work. He started the program weighing 398 pounds and ended it exactly 200 pounds less than that.

Chris Powell, who transforms the super-obese, helps both in the second season of ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition," beginning Sunday, June 3.
Indefatigably upbeat, Powell explains he coaches people if they are in the right place mentally.
"Sometimes people hit rock bottom, and they are open and coachable," Powell tells Zap2it. "Sometimes we just come across someone who says, 'I am struggling, and I just don't like my life the way it is.' "
To make this work, people must be authentic, let down their guard and be ready to accept major changes. In the show, participants meet with physicians and nutritionists. Powell puts them on exercise and diet regimens.

ABC has done it again. They've renewed Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition for a third season -- before the next season has even begun airing.
A reality show, Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition documents makeovers of very overweight people. Trainer Chris Powell moves into their homes to help them change their attitude, nutrition, and exercise routine. When Powell leaves, he's set them on the right course and keeps watching their progress via video chat updates. At the end of one year, the transformation is unveiled at a party attended by the person's friends and family.
The series debuted last May to a 2.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.11 million total viewers. Over the course of the season, the ratings declined and the eight episodes ended up averaging a 2.1 in the demo with 6.02 million.

The season finale of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition followed a 34 year old mom, Krista, who has focused so much of her care to her 6 year old health stricken daughter that she has abandoned taking care of her own health over the years. Krista weighed in at 445 lbs. and over the first three months of her weight loss journey, lost 100 of those pounds. Given the remarkable achievement, Chris Powell awarded Krista’s family a second car, which helped her in her search for a job. What a clever play on cars, as Powell ended up making Krista push him (while inside a car) across a 1.5 mile race car track in Texas. There are thin people who are just as out of shape as Krista is that cannot do that, so Krista is definitely to be commended for pushing an entire car across more than a mile. Perhaps the strength and...

This week’s episode of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition followed 30 year old Texan mother of two, Staci who first weighs in at 456 lbs next to trainer, Chris Powell. For a woman who ended up dropping out of school because she couldn’t fit into the desks, her phase one weight loss goal of 100 lbs was more achievable than she may have initially imagined. Although the reward of a full time nanny for meeting this goal was a great source of drive. With the nanny around, Staci met her phase two goal of 60 lbs on the dot, weighing in at 290 lbs. As wonderful of a success as this is, Staci was still overweight and unfortunately fell short of her next goal. After an incredibly grueling (even by Powell’s account) day of fire fighter drills during a severe heat wave, Staci seemed determined to meet her nine month weight loss goal of yet another 60 lbs.

Chris Powell had his hands full with this week's lucky participant in 'Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition' (Mon., 10Pm Et on ABC). More than anyone we've seen before, Wally is deep into an addiction to food, and it proved more than Powell could handle.
During the first three months, Wally was doing fine and even hit his three-month goal. But that's because Powell was living with him, motivating him to work out and, more importantly, keeping him out of those drive-thrus.
Wally's level of addiction to food is as bad as any drug addict or alcoholic. He lies to friends and loved ones, sneaks money to buy food and has even spiraled into despair. Powell tried to do what he could to help Wally find his inner drive and will to succeed and change, but it was just setback after setback.

This week’s episode of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition followed a 26 year old football fan who stood at 6’4 and weighed in at 651 lbs, which was unfortunately not his highest weight. So in an effort not to add onto his mother’s grief, after having lost a number of loved ones, James sent a letter to trainer and transformation specialist, Chris Powell for help. His letter was just one of the many ways that James expressed his determination to lose the excess weight and become fit (over the course of one year).

In James, viewers saw the most drive out of all of the individuals so far this season. In fact, before Powell even came into his life, James was attempting to lose some weight on his own. As Powell pointed out, James had drive but he just needed someone to show him the...

The transformations reached epic proportions this week on 'Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition' (Mon., 10Pm Et on ABC). James came onto the program at 651 lbs, but at one time he'd topped the scales north of 700 lbs.
With the help of trainer Chris Powell, he not only turned his life around, he set a record for transformations under Powell's tutelage when he dropped an astonishing 313 lbs in a single year.
"I'm glad I'm able to share this story with the world," he told the assembled crowd of his family, friends and supporters. "'Cause I remember how lost I felt when I was over 700 pounds. And just knowing that maybe somebody out there is going to have some form of inspiration from what I was able to accomplish."

In the third episode of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, we meet Dana Baker, a 44 year old man who cannot remember a time when he was fit. 250 lbs overweight, Dana must take 8-10 painkillers each morning “just to function” as he put it. Weighing in at 498 lbs, the work out routine and healthy lifestyle were not nearly as much of a challenge as loving himself. The conflict of low self esteem was brought to the surface much more than in the first two episodes and far sooner in the episode as well. If viewers were tuning in for a feel good episode, they got a lot more than they anticipated! Water aerobics and a song in the choir may have been soothing enough for Dana at home, but trainer and transformation specialist, Chris Powell’s boot camp made him finally face reality.
