New Delhi, Sep 2 (Ians) With franchise cricket resulting in players from different countries playing together, players are losing their aggression as they feel friendly towards players from rival countries.
Sparks are sure to fly when archrivals like India and Pakistan or England and Australia cross swords in the field.
However, even in these ‘friendly’ times, former India opener Gautam Gambir says the feeling of friendship with opponent teams should be left outside the field. He said he never had a friendly banter with players from rival teams.
“Friendship with opponent teams should always stay outside of the field. This trend has now started with the emergence of franchise cricket formats. I have never experienced on-field friendly banter, or friendly gestures with opponents during my time. Even during friendly conversations with opponents, we had aggression in our eyes because we were playing to win for our country,” Gambhir told Star Sports,...

Mumbai, May 28 (Ians) This is a story narrated by a journalist who had covered India’s tour of Pakistan in the 1980s — when the India-Pakistan rivalry was at its peak in Test cricket.
The tours were also known for sharing off-field bonhomie as the players used to stay in the same hotel, and would spend time together at the end of the day’s play.
In between two Test matches in that tour, a party was organised for the Indian cricketers and visiting journos with liquor flowing like water, despite it being banned in Pakistan.
Suddenly, the entire gathering was in chaos as there was a police raid on the premises and everyone was in a panic as consuming alcohol was a taboo and a grave crime in the Islamic nation.

Chattogram, March 6 (Ians) A brilliant all-rounder performance by seasoned Shakib Al Hasan, who claimed his 300th Odi wicket during a haul of 4-35 after hitting 71-ball 75, helped Bangladesh defend a modest 246 for a 50-run win against England here on Monday.

Shakib then returned to fox the English batters with his spin bowling, claiming 4-35 as England were bundled out for 196 in 43.1 overs as the hosts won by 50 runs.

Karachi, Dec 24 (Ians) Pakistan on Saturday added Mir Hamza, Sajid Khan and Shahnawaz Dahani to their Test squad for the two-match Test series against New Zealand, which begins on Monday.
The addition comes on the back of a discussion by the Men’s Interim Selection Committee, chaired by former all-rounder Shahid Afridi and joined by Pakistan captain Babar Azam.
“We had a good discussion on the squad and agreed we needed to strengthen our bowling department to give ourselves the best chance of taking 20 wickets in a match,” Afridi said
“Taking into consideration recent form and performances, we have added fast bowlers Mir Hamza and Shahnawaz Dahani, and off-spinner Sajid Khan. I am confident the inclusion of three additional bowling resources will give Babar Azam more options to field the best available squad for the first Test,” he added.

Dhaka, Dec 7 (Ians) Captain Rohit Sharma became the first Indian, and just the second batter world-wide, in international cricket to hit 500 sixes during the second Odi against Bangladesh, here on Wednesday.
Walking out to bat at No.9 after injuring his hand while in the field, Rohit put up a strong fight late in the run chase. He played a sensational knock (51 not out off 28 balls) with three fours and five sixes, to give India a chance but in the end, failed to get them over the line.
Rohit’s tally of 500 international sixes is bettered by only West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who has 533 sixes. No other Indian batter has more than 400 sixes. Ms Dhoni with 359 sixes is the closest to Rohit among Indian players.
The likes of Shahid Afridi (476), Brendon McCullum (398), Martin Guptill (383) are the third, fourth and fifth place respectively in the list of most number of six hitters in international cricket.

Melbourne, Oct 24 (Ians) Former India skipper Virat Kohli would certainly have left Pakistani fans in a daze and the Indian cricket aficionados celebrating Diwali a day earlier with his unbeaten 82-run knock at the packed Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.

Dismissed only twice in his 10 knocks, the 33-year-old’s latest match-winning effort means his average has soared to a mindboggling 270.50. Outside of a 2 not out against Scotland coming in at the end of their winning chase in 2021, Kohli’s lowest score is 23 (27 balls) in Nagpur back in 2016.

Dubai, Sep 5 (Ians) Indian batter Virat Kohli has defended under-pressure Arshdeep Singh after his dropped catch of Asif Ali proved to be the turning point in the clash between India and Pakistan on Sunday.
In the 18th over of the match on Sunday, needing 34 runs, Asif Ali tried to sweep Ravi Bishnoi and it seemed like he would be returning to the pavilion. However, Singh dropped the straightforward chance and Ali survived to bring back the game in Pakistan’s favour. He then received a lot of criticism from netizens.
Kohli later defended the young pacer, saying anyone could have made such a mistake during a high-pressure game.
“Anyone can make the mistake, the situation was tight. It was a high-pressure game and mistakes can happen. I still remember I was playing my first Champions Trophy and the match was against Pakistan, I had played a very bad shot against Shahid Afridi.

It meant that he was above "19" when he hit a record 37-ball century against Sri Lanka in 1996 and not 16, which is what his official age was. New Delhi, Feb 7 (Ians) It was on February 7, 1999 when legendary Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble became the only second bowler in world cricket after England's Jim Laker to scalp all 10 wickets in an innings.
During the second Test of the two-match series against Pakistan, Kumble picked up all the wickets at the Feroz Shah Kotla, now known as the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium.
India had lost the first Test in Chennai by a slim margin of 12 runs and were in a must-win situation in the Delhi Test.
After posting 252 in their first innings, the hosts came out with an exceptional bowling performance to bowl out Pakistan for 172. In the second innings, Sadgopan Ramesh (96) and Sourav Ganguly (62*) scored gritty half centuries as India posted a 420-run target for the visitors.
The visitors got off to a steady start in their chase as openers Shahid Afridi and Saeed Anwar put on 101 runs for the first wicket.

Abu Dhabi, Jan 27 (Ians) Australia cricketer Ben Dunk believes former India captain Ms Dhoni is "probably the number one wicketkeeper-batsman" the world cricket has even seen.
"I think Ms Dhoni is probably the number one wicketkeeper-batsman that we have ever seen. The way that he has played over a long period of time is amazing. His legacy and record and everything speak for himself," Dunk, who has played five T20Is for Australia, said.
"He has got ice that runs through his veins, he takes the game to a place where it's almost unwinnable and seems to somehow win them all the time. If I could play 5 or 10 percent as good as Ms, I would be very happy," he added.
Dunk, who will turn up for Qalandars in the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament beginning Thursday, said he is looking forward to playing with former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi.

New Delhi, Jan 20 (Ians) Former Pakistan players, including the likes of Wasim Akram and Shahid Afridi, have lavished rich praise on the Indian team following their remarkable Test series win over Australia.
On Tuesday, India defeated Australia in the fourth and final Test to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1. The Ajinkya Rahane-led side, despite the absence of their regular captain Virat Kohli and other key players, created history by becoming the first team to beat Australia at the Gabba in over 32 years.
"Incredible Test & series win for India. Have not seen a bold, brave & boisterous Asian team on a tougher tour of Australia. No adversity could stop them, frontline players injured, & won after a remarkable turnaround from the depths of 36 all out, inspiring for others. Kudos India," Akram said in a tweet.
"Incredible performance India! Despite so many injuries and setbacks, India have pulled off an astonishing series win.
