It’s almost hard to believe, but when America’s Next Top Model premiered in 2003 on Upn -- yes, that was a network until 2006 -- there were no major social media platforms. In fact, social media as we know it didn’t even exist yet.
Facebook didn’t launch until 2004. Twitter followed two years later, with platforms like Tumblr (2007), Instagram (2010), Pinterest (2010), Snapchat (2011) and Vine (2013) to come over the next decade.
While Tyra Banks has always tried to keep America’s Next Top Model relevant -- introducing new challenges and themes to fit the ever-evolving definition of a model or Tyra’s own needs -- social media wasn’t a major component of the show until cycle 19, when the public was allowed to vote and Bryanboy was added as a social media correspondent.

With the return of America’s Next Top Model, we are revisiting our favorite moments, including all the winning photo shoots, from the first 20 cycles of the series. While we ranked the cycles according to Tyra Banks’ hair, we didn’t take into account of all the judges that have served on the show’s panel. Since they’ve helped Tyra decide who would become America’s next great fashion hope, it’s important to examine all 13 of them.
Note: The number one judge is and always will be Tyra herself so she was not included in this list.

Anna Wintour and second row have long been an oxymoron when it comes to any fashion show. Until now, that is. The iconic Vogue editor was photographed (by way of a sneaky Instagram snap!) while seated in the second row during the Valentino show at Paris Fashion Week, creating a collective gasp on the Internet amongst fashion's elite. So did someone snub the most powerful woman in Manolos in the City of Light?! Nope! At least, according to blogger Bryan Boy, who was apparently present when the seating snafu went down. Although Wintour acted like a consummate professional, leaving the front row to her staff, it seems that the incident still may have given her a bit of a bad hair...

Jourdan Miller smized her way to the top of the 20th cycle of "America's Next Top Model" - the first with male contestants - on Friday. She beat out Marvin Cortes, who was favored to win, for a contract with Next Model Management, a spread in Nylon and a $100,000 campaign with Guess. Jourdan impressed all season long, winning Best Photo five consecutive times and stomping to the death in the finale runway. Tyra Banks even told the 19 year-old, “I wanted a boy to win so bad, but… you were undeniable!” While she did model H2T and talked openly about her past abusive marriage, Jourdan lacked some serious personality. The Oregon native joins the ranks of recent “Antm” winners who are interchangeable, without the spark of the first 10 winners who defined the show. And though the introduction of male models this season is great, there's still plenty of room for improvement.

Hello there, and welcome back to the wet and wild world of America's Next Top Model! This week's installation was weird all-around, from the lazy editing to the equine violence to the self-deprecating confessionals. In fact, the entire mood surrounding the episode was somber -- I kept noticing how completely devastated and strung out all the girls were, despite the looming mixed bag of prizes. In cycles of yore, the contestants would be stressed, yes, as the competition neared its close, but also optimistic and somewhat jubilant -- I don't know what kind of maltreatment has been going down in the Top Model house this time around, but everyone looks severely wounded and desperate to escape.
The episode opens with staged shots of each girl pensively pacing the beach as she considers her Top Model existence. Sepia-tone images of the judges fade across the screen, accompanied by the soft echo of former critiques like,...

America's Next Top Model came back from hiatus right when the competition was revving up. Down to the final six and on the edge of going international, the show still had yet to bring back a competitor and had more than enough time to continue the gelling at panel. The cycle had been more about getting used to the changes that had been implemented before the season began, but now that we're halfway through, it's time that tentativeness gave way to Top Model insanity.
But did the return episode, "The Girl Who Comes Back," keep the momentum going? And, well, who came back?
Teams for Two and Two for Teams
The girls head to Smashbox where they meet Kelly, who tells them that they will be doing go-sees this week, go-sees that will be for actual jobs. The catch is, though, each of the five designers (Guess, Whitney Port, Charlotte Ronson,...

"America's Next Top Model" will be back for a Cycle 20 and this time it's returning with some testosterone. That's right, the next season "America's Next Top Model" will include male models.
Cycle 20 will debut in summer 2013. A specific premiere date has not yet been announced.
The male models will move into the same house as the female models, and the new cycle will include Cycle 19's added social media elements that let viewers vote for their favorite models.
There's no word on what the judge panel will look like for Cycle 20. Host and executive producer Tyra Banks shook up the series when she parted ways with Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and J. Alexander. The three were replaced with Johnny Wujek as photo shoot creative consultant, social media correspondent Bryanboy, and male model Rob Evans. The judge panel for Cycly 19 also included Kelly Cutrone.

Change is something built into the DNA of America's Next Top Model. The show has been through a series of different judges and contributors in its 19 cycles, while tweaking the format of a cycle, instituting new themes, and making over every girl that gets to a certain point in the competition. But heading into cycle 19, Top Model did more than just a minor change here or an experiment there; it blew up the show, getting rid of the J's (and Nigel), bringing a social media element into the competition, and recruiting a hoard of college girls to fill the Top Model Sorority House for a collegiate-themed cycle. This would either breathe new life into the aging franchise, which saw ratings collapse in cycle 18, or end up as one final desperate cling to relevance before the inevitable cancellation that got postponed thanks to all the changes.

Have you ever licked soda off of a dirty floor? Or referred to your eating disorder as a "stress relief?" How about dry-heaving into a toilet while a stranger takes pictures? If you answered yes to any one of these questions, then you have something in common with the contestants from this week's episode of "America's Next Top Model." If you answered yes to all of the questions, then you are my trashy twin and should maybe curb your drinking habits. But yes, after weeks of aimless creative fumbling, the "Antm" machine has reverted to its delicious comfort zone: we're talking dumpster-diving, shade-tossing, anorexia-centric TV gold, and its crassness could not have come soon enough.

Tgif, smizers! The modeling world meets that of video games in tonight's episode of America's Next Top Model: College Edition. With many video games dropping before the holiday season, I suppose this challenge is relevant enough. The remaining eight models are asked to jump into a virtual world.
After playing heroines, guest photographer Mike Ruiz welcomes the models into a setting where the Victorian era meets industrialization. One model in particular fails to leave her new-found video game strength behind, and Bryanboy is caught in the crossfire.

America's Next Top Model tends to keep the photo shoots that it does fairly light and fluffy. There may be an occasional high fashion shoot or a shoot that leans more on natural beauty, but for the most part, a Top Model shoot is as much about the actual modeling as it is about the girl's ability to adapt to the elements.
The next episode of Top Model, titled "The Girl Who Gets Pwn'd," will take the remaining models into a thematic area that the show has yet to explore: steampunk. Complete with a live owl and Victorian-influenced fashion, the shoot is the most high fashion of the cycle and requires a type of power that not every model remaining possesses. Currently dangling closest to the edge of elimination is Yvonne, who has a confrontation with Bryanboy in the preview for the episode, while Brittany narrowly escaped the bottom two...

Cheerleading, tears, and a melodramatic finale -- no, this isn't "Bring It On 3: All Or Nothing," it's the latest installment of "America's Next Top Model!" If you recall, this cycle's theme is "College Edition," although that flimsy premise has dried up by Episode 5, and we are treated to the formless Antm structure of yester cycles. The petty drama takes off as soon as the models return to the house: Laura is "President" of the house this week due to her high scores at judging, and thusly enjoys the lackluster charms of the Tyra Suite. Unlike Victoria, who greedily hoarded the whole room to herself, Laura invites bitchyboo Kristen to cohabitate, prompting Leila's jealousy and a girl-on-girl "obsession" plotline that reverberates throughout the episode. The camera pans over a dingy sink, overflowing with dishes, as Leila waxes self-pitiful, which, if you're familiar with the Antm editing process, does not bode well for her.

With the elimination of Leila at the end of the last episode of America's Next Top Model, the competition officially turned serious. Once a frontrunner with her unusual beauty and strong portfolio, Leila had an extremely poor week in every aspect and crashed out of the competition much earlier than anticipated. The new Top Model format might not be perfect, but her elimination served as a warning to the rest of the models. One poor week and you could be gone, no matter how much potential you show or how you've performed to that point.
Therefore, it's not surprising that some of the models have become a little more tense. We're well into the competition and one wrong move, particularly from a bottom feeder, might end their dream forever. The model most feeling the pressure, judging from the preview below, is Yvonne, who is coming off her best week on the show.

If there was any justice in the world (and creativity in my body this late on a Friday night), this recap would be written from the perspective of Laura's hot pink eyebrows, which will almost certainly be receiving a starring credit next week. It'd be right in line with how the rest of "The Girl Who Sings For Alicia Keys" went, as the child of famous parents received nearly every inch of spare camera time in one of the more one-note edits I think I've ever seen on America's Next Top Model. For 42 minutes, we got to see Laura cry, confront a fear of heights, have an argument, make a new ally, lose an old ally, impress Kelly, put on a fashion show, and nearly win a trip to an Alicia Keys concert, her confessionals racking up more screen time than Bryanboy has in four episodes.

This week's episode of "America's Next Top Model" ran the gamut in terms of genre, throwing us everything from mean girls to Tyler Perry to zombies. There's something for everyone! The scene opens on the Top Model house: Victoria won Best Photo last week, and thusly savors the luxuries afforded to the weekly "president," aka access to the Tyra Suite and not much else. In an unexpected diva move, Vicki opts to stay in the suite alone instead of sharing the wealth, a bitch-play I deeply appreciate. Kiara keenly observes that Vicki might lack the social skills garnered by those who attend schools outside of their own homes, a surprising insight for someone with shaved eyebrows. Semi-plus-size shovel-face Yvonne laments her Yeti looks and lack of fans; I say she needs to bounce out on her misshapen booty Asap.

The Top Model makeover episode is still, more often than not, one of the highlights of each cycle. It may not have the same initial trainwreck-y type of fascination to it than it did during the show's heyday, but you can usually count on the episode to produce at least one major breakdown and at least one impressive transformation. Depending on what goes on during the makeover episode, a cycle can be made, undone, and flipped completely upside down, confidence issues and perceived favoritism tending to be the leading culprit. The girls that come out of the makeover the strongest are the ones that take the change of direction in stride and use the different look in order to flex their modeling skills and grow before out very eyes.

We were definitely sad to see Nigel Barker get fired from "America's Next Top Model" during Tyra Banks' unfortunate restructuring back in April, but Barker seems to be a true professional and doesn't harbor any resentment.
The former "Top Model" judge was the victim of a re-casting tactic meant to boost dropping ratings in the show's 18th season when his close friend Tyra gave him, Miss J and Jay Manuel the axe. But just in case you needed another reason to love Nigel, he told the New York Post that there really are no hard feelings between him and his former boss:
“I know it was tough on [Tyra] as well. It’s never easy to fire someone, least of all, of course, a friend. At the same time, this is business and things change. She’s a good girl, a strong woman, and she’s done a lot with her life.

America's Next Top Model 19.02 "The Girl Who Cries Home" Recap
Now that we have the top 13 girls picked to live in a house to find out what happens when people stop being polite in hopes of becoming America's Next Top Model, cycle 19 will begin to take shape. Going into the premiere last week, you didn't know what the show would look like after an offseason of turnover and makeover - make no mistake, Top Model will be Top Model come hell or high water, but after 19 cycles, change can be a little scary. Can the show manage to keep its (decidedly distinct) personality while evolving in all the right ways?
