Bill Maher offered his political take on Jimmy Kimmel‘s Monday night monologue where he tearfully revealed his newborn son had successfully undergone a life-threatening operation on his heart.
The Real Time host quoted the new dad’s plea that “If your baby’s going to die and it doesn’t have to, it shouldn’t matter how much money you make – I think that’s something whether you’re a Republican or Democrat we all agree on.”
As the audience stirred with applause, Maher quieted members, adding, “Unfortunately that’s not true, and that needs to be said. That’s not true.

It would be insufficient, writes Carrie Battan, to call Beyoncé’s Lemonade an album: “The project is also a piece of spoken word, a narrative film, a map of cultural reference points, and a window into the soul of an icon whose inner life has always seemed just out of reach.” Battan’s description hints at what has so excited the Internet in the week and a half since Lemonade’s release: it’s not only a new Beyoncé album—it’s also her most personal work yet, and one that, as Ash Sarkar notes at the London Review of Books, is uniquely political:“How has this happened? How has Beyoncé engendered such a deep sense of solidarity among women and the marginalised? Most reviewers have pointed out that Lemonade is Beyoncé’s most personal and political work to date, but few have interrogated how the album moves between the two.

Each week, Deadline’s Hot Reads presents what Hollywood’s power players are reading now and what they think is special about each book.
This week, film producer and Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum shares what he’s been reading as his latest film, Ouija, holds its spell over the Halloween weekend. The PG-13 horror feature is Blumhouse’s seventh micro-budget film to hit No. 1 – but Blum also has his first micro-budget drama, the Miles Teller-J.K. Simmons jazz two-hander Whiplash, an intense drama garnering strong critical and festival acclaim that has spawned Oscar hopes.
“I find that the books that I read not for work inform what I do and the decisions that I make in my business,” he said. “But people generally don’t like to adapt – especially successful people. They get onto something and they stick with it. It’s important no matter how successful you...

Girls creator and star Lena Dunham's voting virginity ad caused a ridiculous freak-out on the right, with equal parts prudish fanning and triumphant over-reading of its significance fueled by the prudish standard that makes people think this ad is edgy, and hence, desperate. Surely, the hepcats at Up With Chris Hayes will put the whole thing in perspective, and in record time, no less. Let's see how Up panelists Richard Kim of The Nation, The Guardian's Ana Marie Cox, The New Yorker's George Packer, and TheGrio.com's Sophia Nelson handled it:...

The dust from the shift from hosts Jake Tapper to Christiane Amanpour still settling, today's This Week panel took on the 14th Amendment and the greater topic of the Senate, and weren't all that enthusiastic about the use of the upper chamber. While the Washington Post's Michael Gerson defended it's use as a neutralizing body, the New Yorker's George Packer argued that today's Senate is "gelatinous" and makes legislating more difficult.

The real question facing Haiti isn't whether to rebuild the capital or move it inland; it's how do you build a city that creates opportunities instead of slums?
Haiti isn't just the world's most pressing case of disaster recovery following last month's earthquake. It's the place most in need of some instant city-building.
Port-au-Prince--home to two million inhabitants and a fifth of Haiti's population--is effectively leveled. The United Nations estimates 75% of the city will need to be rebuilt, with 500,000 people still sleeping in the streets. Others have moved out of the city and into emergency tents, lean-tos, and shelters. The International Organization for Migration told The New York Times last week that it could be five years before residents move back into houses, and that they could look forward to living in glorified "garden sheds" until then.
So far, the debate has focused on whether displaced capital-dwellers should permanently relocate.
