- Boder was a German conductor of opera and concert who worked internationally.
- Michael Boder was the chief conductor of the Royal Danish Theatre from the 2012/13 season. He also conducted regularly at the Vienna State Opera, including the world premieres of Cerha's Der Riese vom Steinfeld and Reimann's Medea.
- He served as an assistant conductor under Michael Gielen at the Frankfurt Opera, and at just 29, he was named the chief conductor of the Basel Orchestra in Switzerland.
- Boder conducted the Vienna production of "Das Schloss" for a recording on the Wergo label in 1999.
- Some of his operatic premieres were in 1991 Penderecki's "Ubu Rex" for the opening of the Munich Opera Festival, in 1992 Reimann's "Das Schloß", in 1998 Manfred Trojahn's "Was ihr wollt" at the Bavarian State Opera, and in 2007 Henze's "Phaedra" at the Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden.
- Boder returned in 2020 to Vienna, leading the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony (as it was by then named) in a recording of orchestral works by Morton Feldman.
- He held guest conductorships at several top German opera houses and at London's Covent Garden (where he made his debut with Verdi's Rigoletto), as well as, slightly later, the San Francisco Opera.
- His contemporary opera specialty became evident early as he conducted the world premiere of Luca Lombardi's Faust.

- In 2007, he moved to Naxos for a recording of Gloria Coates' Symphony No. 15 with the Vienna Radio Symphony.
- Boder made his debut at the Vienna State Opera on 15 December 1995, conducting Alban Berg's "Wozzeck". He conducted there also "Elektra", "Die Frau ohne Schatten" and "Ariadne auf Naxos", all by Richard Strauss, Schönberg's "Die Jakobsleiter", Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi", Berg's Lulu, Wagner's "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" and Hindemith's "Cardillac".
- Boder was the general music director (GMD) of the Liceu in Barcelona from 2008 to 2012.
- A graduate of the Musikhochschule Hamburg, he went on for further studies in Florence, Italy, with Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Muti.
- He conducted the premiere of Pascal Dusapin's "Faustus, the Last Night" at the Staatsoper Berlin.
- Michael Boder gave the German premiere of George Enescu's "Oedipe".
