Barry Gutierrez

Barry Gutierrez is a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist who was on
the the Rocky Mountain News staff in Denver, Colorado, from 1999 to
2009. Gutierrez graduated from Western Kentucky University with a
photojournalism degree in the mid-'90s. He interned at the Piqua (Ohio)
Daily Call, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the San Jose Mercury News.
After leaving college, he was hired as a full-time temporary
photographer/picture editor at the San Jose Mercury News and later
moved to the Rocky Mountain News. The Rocky Mountain News photo staff
earned a Pulitzer Prize for their fearless coverage of the Colorado
wildfires in summer 2002. In 2003, Gutierrez was awarded Best Portfolio
at the Atlanta Photojournalism Workshop and a first place in NPPA/BOP:
Domestic News Story. Among other acknowledgments, he also earned a
first place feature Headliner Award in 2008. He has a heart for giving
back to the community of photojournalism by volunteering at workshops,
speaking at events, teaching classes and mentoring younger journalists.
"It's not about you. It's about making the world around you a better
place," says Gutierrez.
