Animal Collective will release a new live album as part of a special 20th anniversary reissue of their 2004 LP, Sung Tongs, out Oct. 4 via Domino.
Sung Tongs Live at the Theatre at Ace Hotel captures a 2018 concert in Los Angeles, during which Animal Collective’s Avey Tare and Panda Bear performed Sung Tongs in its entirety (while also adding a rendition of the Sung Tongs-era deep cut, “Covered in Frogs”). To celebrate the 15th anniversary of their lauded 2009 effort Merriweather Post Pavilion, Animal Collective are releasing a deluxe vinyl repress of the album.

A new crowd pleaser has made it to the Paramore set list. The band live debuted their single “Thick Skull” at the Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand, on Sunday night. The audience waved their hands in the air as frontwoman Hayley Williams prompted, “Come on out with your hands up.”
The song is the emotional closer of their latest LP, This Is Why. Paramore performed the song halfway through their Nov. 19 set.
This Is Why is Paramore’s sixth studio album, and their first since 2017’s transformative After Laughter.

Daft Punk have released Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition) via Columbia Records. The re-release, which has removed all drums and percussive elements from their final studio album, arrives at the 10-year anniversary of the 2013 Grammy-winning Album of the Year. Stream the album below.
According to the album’s press release, the drumless edition of hit album Random Access Memories aims to give listeners “the ability to dive deeper into the layers of each track.”
The record arrives shortly after the release of Random Access Memories (10th Anniversary Edition), which included nine unreleased tracks for a total of 35 minutes of all-new music. The release saw Random Access Memories return to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
Daft Punk have also commemorated this anniversary with an ongoing content series called Memory Tapes, which pulls back the curtain on the French house duo’s creation of Random Access Memories.

If last year’s Time Skiffs left you wanting more from Animal Collective, you’re in luck: the band have shared another new album called Isn’t It Now?, out today via Domino.
Like many artists, Animal Collective’s plans were changed when the pandemic hit. The experimental band wrote about 20 songs before the world went into lockdown, and Time Skiffs comprised nine compositions Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin, and Geologist were able to record separately to a click track. They saved nine more, however, for Isn’t It Now?, longing to work together in the same room.
The band teamed with Russell Elevado for the project, recording its songs in late 2021 before road-testing them on tour in 2022. Featuring the 22-minute long single “Defeat,” Isn’t It Now? marks Animal Collective’s longest record to date. Pre-orders for physical formats are ongoing, and you can stream the album via Apple Music or Spotify below.

Daft Punk will continue their 10th anniversary celebration of Random Access Memories this November with a “drumless edition” of their Grammy-winning 2013 album.
Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition), due out November 17, features all 13 songs from the original LP, but as the title suggests, the drums and percussion have been stripped from the defunct dance duo’s tracks.
Ahead of the reworked LP’s release, Daft Punk has shared the “drumless” version of the ballad “Within”; although already one of Random Access Memories’ less percussive tracks, the “drumless edition” take spotlights Chilly Gonzales’s piano work.

Animal Collective have unveiled a psychedelic, 23-year-old cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams.” Listen to it below.
The cover arrives as part of the reissue of Animal Collective’s debut album, 2000’s Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished. Along with remastered versions of the record’s original 10 tracks, the seminal psych-pop band also included a bonus EP (entitled A Night At Mr. Raindrop’s Holistic Supermarket), which consists of five previously-unreleased songs from the time they were working on Spirit They’re Gone.
One of those songs is the imaginative arrangement of “Dreams,” which switches out the original’s steady groove for a looping soundscape of synths and booming kick drum hits. Dave Portner (aka Avey Tare) took on lead vocal duties, and, though the original release was credited simply to “Avey Tare and Panda Bear,” future Animal Collective member Josh Dibb (aka Deakin) mixed the track.

Animal Collective’s Panda Bear has reteamed with longtime producer Peter “Sonic Boom” Kember for the collaborative album Reset, due out next month.
Ahead of the LP’s release, the duo shared the album’s first single, “Go On,” built on a sample of the riff from the Troggs’ 1967 song “Give It to Me” and accompanied by an animated visual by James Siewert.
Sonic Boom, a former member of the space rock outfit Spacemen 3, previously worked on Panda Bear’s 2011 album Tomboy and 2015’s Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper.

The KissMuch of my problem with so-called experimental cinema is a matter of language, and my marriage to it as both a viewer and a critic, despite language’s inevitable failure in the face of other forms of meaning. Some of my difficulty is based on background and affinities, some of it exposure and/or familiarity; most is plain obduracy. For whatever reason we may chose to fixate on, I have a hard time letting non-narrative films tell me how to read them beyond the sense I can put into words. After all, I am inarticulate without them. One friend says the trick is to bring the films “down” to the most fundamental ways in which they work, how the pieces may “add up”—but again this is a metaphor, which is of course the premise of language—an arbitrary equation of different things—and awfully teleological in a realm...

Welcome to another edition of Rolling Stone's "Everything Index," our midweek rankings of pop-culture's power players.
In this installment, we disprove the adage that you can't teach an old dog new tricks – after all, Billy Joel is playing Bonnaroo, and there's an actual old dog in Seattle that learned how to ride the bus – while, at the same time, discover that perhaps there's a reason the saying has stood the test of time (take Miley Cyrus' new magazine shoot, for example). Either way, it's been another wild week, and it's only Wednesday.

Panda Bear's global radio campaign to unspool Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper's nine songs in sequence has begun. To promote the album, which drops January 13, the artist is spreading out the premieres, with each new song debuting on a different radio station. According to Domino's interactive map and schedule, the U.S. has four: "Lonely Wanderer," on January 5 at 6 p.m. Et, via NPR's "All Songs 24/7"; "Acid Wash," on January 6 at noon Et, via NPR's "All Songs Considered"; "Selfish Gene," on January 6 at 1:05 p.m. Et, via Kcrw's "Morning Becomes Eclectic"; and "Acid Wash," on January 6 at 2 p.m. Et, via Wtmd. Streaming links and times for all songs are available here, and "Sequential Circuits," the first song, will be available after broadcast here. Noah Lennox, the 36-year-old musician known as Panda Bear, is gazing in silence at an elephant turd. We are at the New Museum, taking in the British artist Chris Ofili’s provocative retrospective “Night and Day,” and although we’ve stood before Ofili’s huge, glittering, Giuliani-inflaming depiction of the Virgin Mary as well as the imposing bronze Annunciation, no piece has fascinated Lennox quite so much as this small sculpture titled Shithead, which is made of tiny human teeth, pieces of Ofili’s dreadlocks, and his signature material, elephant dung. Lennox has a lot of questions about the dung. Does Ofili sculpt it with his own hands, he wonders aloud, or does he employ an assistant to do the dirty work? What does it smell like under that glass? The placard next to the piece is no help. Before moving on, Lennox takes one last look at the...

Panda Bear, the chillest dude in Animal Collective (impressive feat!) and the non-cyborg voice heard on Daft Punk’s “Doin’ It Right,” released a new Ep today. The four-song Mr Noah is available to stream on Spotify right now, and it comes in advance of forthcoming full-length album Panda Bear vs. The Grim Reaper, which will be out on January 13. I will go ahead and declare the album’s initial prognosis “very promising”; when I saw him play a set of almost entirely new material last month, it was the least angry I have seen an audience get in a long time about someone not Playing the Hits. (Though, to be fair, I don’t think the two Venn diagram circles representing “Panda Bear fans” and “people who get visibly angry about things” actually touch.) With its big, God’s-pocket-change beat, the first single “Mr Noah” is definitely more percussive...

Directed by artist/photographer/filmmaker Kevin Castanheira, the film's haunting imagery compliments the droning, pulsing cosmic tones and heavy, Sabbath-style rhythms that permeate the band's critically-acclaimed new album Indigo Meadow. The Black Angels hail from Austin, Texas, and recently played South By Southwest on the heels of a Winter tour with the legendary Roky Erickson (one of the giants of postmodern rock). They will be curating their own seventh annual Austin Psych Fest on May 2nd through 4th, featuring bands like The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Loop, The Dandy Warhols and Panda Bear. Be sure to also check out the Psycho-inspired video for Melinda Ortner's “One More Day,” which debuted on Fearnet to coincide with the Season 2 premiere of Bates Motel.

2013 is dead; long live 2013. To memorialize a year that wasn’t short on contentious debate in the film world, Josh Spiegel, Simon Howell and Edgar Chaput take a moment to identify what they believed to be the tall trees in that forest, selecting their respective Top 5s (with next to no overlap!), honourable mentions, and whatever other discussions happen to crop up as a result of each other’s picks and placements. Ricky D had to sit this one out, so he’ll be sharing his picks on the next ‘cast.

We return with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes details on Sun Choke, starring Barbara Crampton, and the Monster Zombie Claymation short film:
Sun Choke Begins Production: “Janie (Hagan) is just trying to get well. As Janie recovers from a recent violent psychotic break, she’s subjected each day to a bizarre holistic health and wellness regimen designed, and enforced, by her lifelong nanny and caretaker, Irma (Crampton). Janie begins to veer off the road to recovery when she develops an obsession with a young woman, Savannah (Lane), which Janie feels an inexplicable yet profound connection to. The obsession turns increasingly invasive and wedges all three women into an ever-tightening and terrifying struggle for control. Will Janie pull herself back from the precipice of insanity? Or will she go over head-first, taking anyone nearby down with her?

Black Canary’s ex-coworkers come to give her her severance package. And another major DC bad guy comes into the story.
Before I get to tonight’s episode, I wanted to mention that Tbl’s esteemed entertainment editor, Jim Halterman, did a round table discussion on how Arrow is doing so far. He invited some of the finest critics of the land and even let me join in. So, if you want to debate the highs and lows of S2 so far, have a look see.
Sooo…. The show picks up with a flashback, and it’s kind of clever. Because it seems at first just more of the reshooting of Sara’s scenes on the Queen’s Gambit before it sank, but it’s actually about her, and not Oliver. It’s the point where their paths diverged—the first time. And while it’s interesting to see how the little betrayer survived,...

As the Torontoist has pointed out, the Toronto International Film Festival has created a new audience for its short films on YouTube this year. For the first time, shorts from the fest premiered on YouTube. With Walter Woodman and Patrick Cederberg's screencasted film "Noah" receiving over half a million views already, the festival must feel affirmed about its decision. The film, told completely through a computer and an iPhone screen, follows Noah Lennox react to what he feels is his girlfriend's waning interest in a relationship with him. Though it's told exclusively through two screens, it's imaginative and compellingly edited. In an interview with the New Yorker titled "How a Relationship Dies on Facebook," the filmmaking pair, recent Ryerson graduates, explained that the film came about because they're both skeptical of social media, having both rid themselves of Facebook about a year ago. Check out the film below:...

Last week on Mad Men, Ken Cosgrove did a nifty jig, so right on cue, here is your "Ken Cosgrove Dancing to Daft Punk" mash-up. We have one or two issues with the song choice — wouldn't the ragtime breakdown on "Touch" have made more sense? Wouldn't anything besides the Panda Bear song have made more sense? — but as the old saying goes, don't look a gift Daft Punk viral video in the mouth. Our mother taught us that.Related: here is Celine Dion dancing to "Get Lucky." Take notes, it is fantastic. (Via Rich Juzwiak.)...

Los Angeles — It's tempting to say Daft Punk has gone Hollywood.
The influential French electronic duo crafted its first film score, for "Tron: Legacy," three years ago and are now releasing a well-financed, smartly hyped pop album featuring what they call an ensemble cast of contemporary singers and veteran musicians.
There's long been a show-biz bent to the work of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, who for the last 13 years have hidden their faces in public appearances by wearing robot helmets and costumes. Bangalter compares the mystique-building masks – echoed by musicians including Deadmau5 and Mf Doom – to an ever-evolving comic book superhero who starts as a side story "then maybe 50 years later it becomes like a big franchise movie in Hollywood."
Yet Daft Punk's new album "Random Access Memories" isn't the special effects-filled summer blockbuster you might expect. The group that helped popularize electronic dance music in the...

The lead-up to Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories" has proven the robots and Columbia Records to be masters of hype. There were rumors upon rumors, most of which turned out to be true in some weird and twisted way (case in point: Daft Punk was at Coachella, but just to walk around in their civvies and watch the crowd react to a trailer for "Get Lucky").
But building up expectations often comes with plenty of risks. When the album arrives in stores on May 17, it will easily be the most-hyped record of the year. A few critics got an early listen of the project, and though most admit they need to spend more time with the album, here's what they have to say.
Over at MTV, James Montgomery writes that the record "is not a reinvention so much as it is a revolution; their attempt to liberate themselves from dance music entirely.

It might not be a Tupac hologram, but there was still an exciting reveal April 12 at Coachella. Right before the Yeah Yeah Yeahs took to the Main Stage, a short teaser for Daft Punk's upcoming album "Random Access Memories" played for fans and revealed a snippet from the band's new track, "Get Lucky."
The short music video confirms that Daft Punk worked with musicians like Pharrell Williams, Panda Bear, Julian Casablancas, Todd Edwards, DJ Falcon, Chilly Gonzales, Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers and Paul Williams on their new album. Pharrell seems to at least have been a collaborator on "Get Lucky."
The single "Get Lucky" will drop on April 15. There's still a lot of buzz speculating that Daft Punk will have a surprise performance during Coachella, though it's not confirmed. "Random Access Memories" is due on store shelves on May 21.

It's been four years since Animal Collective swam close to mainstream with their breakout album Meriweather Post Pavilion. The poppy departure landed the experimental Baltimore band on countless "Best of 2009" lists, and led to a memorably weird spot on Late Night With David Letterman. It also gave the four members the chance to lay low after recording their ninth album. They took their longest break yet, spun off into solo projects, and generally made fans worry that the group was kaput.
But far from ending things, Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin, and Geologist went old school, getting together in a single space to write their next album instead of collaborating from different ports around the world the way they always had.
The result of their convergence is the space-themed Centipede Hz, which released yesterday. Depending on what you read, the 11 new tracks are either the last piece of the puzzle...

First things first: Maybe we forgot to tell you that Animal Collective has a radio show now. It's true! They do. And when they are not making prank phone calls to inform local pizzerias that the refrigerator is running, they are using the time to debut new music. Panda Bear hosted last night's episode, and he premiered "Today's Supernatural" — the loud, trippy, nontraditionally spooky lead single of Centipede Hz, due September 4. This'll shake you right out of whatever weekend hangover you've got going. And in case that was too jarring for 9:15 a.m. on a Monday morning, here's "Day Four," the latest from Bloc Party. So soothing (relatively). One more treat: another song from the St. Vincent-David Byrne collaboration is streaming on their wesbite. "Weekend in the Dust" is the new one. Enjoy.

Jason Schwartzman, star of "Rushmore," "Scott Pilgrim" and "Bored to Death," is just as excited about his stuff as you are. However, he likes to ramble -- a lot. I don't mean for that to come off as a negative, it's just something that he likes to do. When you ask him a question, he often digresses into complete randomness until he more or less arrives at the answer you're looking for. This happened several times during our wide-ranging discussion, on everything from tee-shirts to magazines to movies to music (he was once the drummer for the band Phantom Planet, whose biggest hit, “California,” was the theme song to “The O.C.”). Jason is also very passionate about the projects he works on, so much so that he's been participating in press for his newest film, “Moonrise Kingdom,” despite being in it for a grand total of about 10 minutes. (Part of...

Interesting mix of the TV tonight, a bit heavy on the reality series but that's par for the course in terms of summer. I know that many of you are connoisseurs of Lifetime movies and we've got one tonight that is evidently based on the life of Joanne Rowling. Now, I won't deny that her story of going from a single mother on the dole to world famous and obscenely wealthy author is probably an awesome story but the source I found indicates that they're beginning the movie during her childhood which... yeah. Moving on! Also we've got "The Big C" which is the second show in two nights that I've had to write about that is supposed to feature a dying protagonist and yet is into it's second season? I'm beginning to feel that perhaps basing series around characters who aren't meant to be alive too long is a bad idea,...

For a decent number of Pajiba After Dark readers, tonight will probably be the last night of TV they watch for the week since A Dance with Dragons comes out tomorrow so all of them will be eyeball deep in their books/Kindles hastening towards the end of the "Song of Ice and Fire" series that I'm sure George R. R. Martin has completely planned out to a meticulous and thoroughly satisfying conclusion. Awww, now I feel bad. It's not nice to tease about these things, as anyone who was a fan of "Battlestar: Galactica" should be aware of. Now I made myself sad. There's just no winning here. Here's your stupid Monday night TV:

"Eureka" on SyFy. Fourth season summer premiere.
"Inside the Actor's Studio: Jennifer Aniston" on Bravo

It was hard enough watching Animal Collective's "visual album" Oddsac and coming up with a review of a movie that stretched the boundaries of narrative, logic and terror. But then the next day I actually sat down to interview some of the smartest guys in the music business, and the director, Danny Perez, who helped them put together a visual album that, in a strange way, fits perfectly with the sonic collages the band has created. They wouldn't tell me how they created some of the more mysterious sounds heard in the film, or how some of the fascinating visual tricks were achieved, but we did talk about how the film reflects the band's musical evolution over the past few years, and how their collaboration changes when working with a director like Perez. Absent Noah Lennox (a.k.a. Panda Bear), band members Josh Dibb (Deakin), David Portner (Avey...
