“I was really looking to create something kind of in the style of Noel Coward, but with a feminist twist,” explains playwright Sandy Rustin of “The Cottage.” She took her first stab at the script for this riotous farce back in 2013 and spent a decade fine tuning the feminist comedy before her Broadway debut this season. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The play begins with Sylvia (Laura Bell Bundy) and Beau (Eric McCormack) on an erotic escape to their cottage in the English countryside. The audience soon discovers that the pair are not married, and instead having a wild affair. But Sylvia winds up questioning her views on marriage and social status when the deceived spouses arrive at the house with affairs of their own. Air-conditioned Broadway held its own as New York City plunged ever deeper into a hot summer last week, with total box office receipts keeping steady at $31,520,593, a tiny increase of 2% over the previous week.
Total attendance for the 30 Broadway productions was 257,204, consistent with the previous week but up nearly 15% over the same period last season.
A trio of shows ending their runs last week – the week ending July 23 – saw box office climb even higher as last-chancers snapped up tickets. Camelot took in $780,457, a boost of $189,142 over the previous week, with attendance at 96% of the Vivian Beaumont’s capacity. Life of Pi closed its run on a strong note, grossing $585,043, with 93% of the Schoenfeld’s seats occupied. And Peter Pan Goes Wrong, struggling in recent weeks after a strong start in the spring, was up by $102,412 to $550,082. Still, the popular West End farce filled only 75% of seats...

Box office for most Broadway shows last week wilted a bit as June’s Tony glow gave way to plain old New York summer heat, though a couple newcomers were among the handful bucking the downward trend, one very impressively so.
In its second week of previews, Back To The Future: The Musical grossed a whopping $1,222,731 for just six previews, filling 99% of seats at the Winter Garden. The stage adaptation of the Michael J. Fox comedy classic starring Casey Likes and Roger Bart opens August 3.
Another recent arrival, Alex Edelman’s Just For Us also made some dollar gains, if on a smaller scale. The well-reviewed one-man show took in $348,998 for the week ending July 9, nearly $20,000 more than the previous week even with attendance down a tad. A higher average ticket price – $64.73 compared to the previous week’s $58.44 – had some impact.

“I read the play and laughed so hard I was sweating,” exclaims actress Julie White of the new play “Potus.” The Broadway veteran portrays Harriet, the White House Chief of Staff tasked with covering up a disastrous gaffe by a bumbling president. Her riotous performance as the beleaguered politico earned White her fourth career Tony Award nomination. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“What occurred to me in doing it, is it took this young woman to see things differently, and be like yes I can write a farce. And the engine of this farce can be a woman,” notes White of “Potus” playwright Sarah Fillinger. White’s character Harriet is that comedic engine, always at the center of the swirling madness and mishaps that plague this fictional White House. The actress confesses that she loves being the driving force of the funny business, as far too few comedic plays place women at their center.

In politics – and Broadway’s Tony Awards season – timing is everything. New play “Potus: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive,” knows that extraordinarily well, not only because of its finely-tuned farce, but also because it enters the 2021-2022 Tony season just under the eligibility wire. “Potus” opened at the Shubert Theatre on April 27 for a limited engagement.
Written by Selina Fillinger and directed by Broadway extraordinaire Susan Stroman, “Potus” unfolds during a particularly tumultuous day for the President of the United States, as the women in his life – staff members, family, and all – try to get him back on course. The who’s-who ensemble stars Lilli Cooper, Lea DeLaria, Rachel Dratch, Julianne Hough, Suzy Nakamura, Julie White, and Vanessa Williams.

Like some strange brew blend of Veep, Noises Off and one of the late Charles Ludlam’s outrageously vulgar (and still sorely missed) Ridiculous Theatrical Company follies, Selina Fillinger’s all-female, star-packed political satire Potus: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive is an occasionally glorious mess of a farce, sometimes chaotically funny and other times as what-were-they-thinking?? goofy as the last segment of a Saturday Night Live episode.
If Potus, directed by Susan Stroman and opening today at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre, never quite rises to the level of those three influences – not as darkly clever as Veep, as lightning quick as Noises Off nor as go-for-deliriously-broke as Ludlam – Potus barrels through its weaker stretches on the contagious enthusiasm and in-it-together vivacity of a crowd-pleasing cast.

The internet was ablaze Monday with the news that Lea Michele once gave an anatomy lesson to her “Spring Awakening” and “Glee” co-star Jonathan Groff using a desk lamp.
The two close friends disclose the intimate story in the upcoming HBO documentary, “Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known,” which revisits the groundbreaking musical through the lens of a 15th anniversary concert that reunited the entire cast, many of whom have gone on to have fruitful careers since the show — Tony nominee Lilli Cooper, “Pitch Perfect” star Skylar Astin and Krysta Rodriguez from “Smash” are among them.
“Those You’ve Known,” directed by Michael John Warren and produced in partnership with Radical Media, is a truly comprehensive examination of the original production and its cultural impact, as well as the joys of the cast reuniting as adults. It covers the development and reception of the coming-of-age rock musical, which explored every topic imaginable: puberty,...

“I honestly pinch myself everyday to be a part of this group of women,” says Lilli Cooper. The Tony-nominated actress is currently starring as a reporter named Chris in the new Broadway comedy “Potus: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive.” The new play from Selina Fillinger and directed by Susan Stroman depicts a day full of mishaps at The White House. Cooper is joined on stage by a celebrated cast which includes Vanessa Williams, Julie White, Rachel Dratch, Lea DeLaria, Julianne Hough and Suzy Nakamura. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“I had major imposter syndrome,” admits Cooper as she thinks back to learning who she would be acting alongside. But she holds her own against the comedy legends, even when their antics make it hard to keep a straight face. “Everyone is so innovative in this,” she explains, “and comes up with new ideas all the time.

More shows should end their pilot with a song that also turns out to be the show’s theme song going forward. Bringing back a retooled version of the original intro isn’t the only reason that “Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock” is a lively update of a beloved kids’ classic, but it’s one of the best examples that this is a show bursting with life, always on the verge of a celebration.
As far as shows about an underground species of benevolent creatures trying to better understand the outside world go, “Fraggle Rock” doesn’t toy too much with the template set out in the ‘80s series. It keeps the same core cast of characters largely unchanged. A community of Fraggles live in a cavern underneath a beach house,...
