Originally touted as a standalone anthology series, all of the gruesome stories in Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story are now connected – and Naomi Grossman's Pepper is the character to tie it all together.
Having first appeared in Asylum, Ahs's second season, Grossman was back for its fourth – Freak Show – in an expanded role in the canon. The timeline, set 12 years before the events of Asylum, has Grossman's costar Lily Rabe reprising her role as Sister Mary Eunice in Wednesday night's episode.

4.4 Edward Mordrake (Part 2)
One of my hopes for this season of American Horror Story is that it wouldn't be focused on the usual cast members. Sure, I'm always game for Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates to square off with one another, but given that Freak Show has a great deal of participation from actual sideshow-type performers, I really wanted to see them be something other than colour. I'm aware that these people were cast primarily for their differences, to fit in with a proper freak show atmosphere, but I would hope that when given a chance, they could act well, too. Considering the focus of Edward Mordrake Part 2, that ability could make or break the episode.
Fortunately, the show has an ace in the hole in the form of Mat Fraser,...

American Horror Story: Freak Show “Edward Mordrake (Part 2)" opened up with the phantom two-faced Edward Mordrake (Wes Bentley) continuing on his mission to find the freak his second face wants him to collect for their ghoulish menagerie.
'American Horror Story: Freak Show' Recap
When Mordrake sits down to listen to Legless Suzi’s (Rose Siggins) tale, she informs him that she was born with a spinal condition that led to the doctors taking her legs. Her parents, wanting nothing to do with her in the height of the Great Depression, dropped her off at a children’s home. Suzi's darkest moment, according to her, was killing a man merely because he had the legs she’d never get to walk upon. As for Paul the Seal (Mat Fraser), he, like Elsa, had dreams of Hollywood and would steal away to the cinema to watch the stars in action.

Although there were some serious let-downs in this week's episode of "American Horror Story: Freak Show," it serves as a reminder of just how far the show runners are willing to push past the boundaries of taste and sanity on basic cable. Of course, the Grand Guignol gore and straight-up weirdness is why most of us watch it, so kudos to everyone involved for making this episode the stuff of nightmares.
Spoilers start here. Let's get this show on the road.
Taking Off the Masks
This week's episode caps off, so to speak, the story of Edward Mordrake (Wes Bentley) and solves the mystery of who he was looking to take with him into the greenish fog. Edward, as directed by the demonic face on the back of his head, continues peppering each of the performers with questions about their deepest secrets and darkest shames, which is a cool narrative...

It's hard to not feel a little disappointed in this week's episode of "American Horror Story: Freak Show" after last week's hour-and-a-half long season premiere, but not every day can be Halloween. (Okay, it can be, but it sure gets exhausting.)
Last week's extravaganza poured the foundation for the "Freak Show" world and introduced the major players, so it makes sense that "Massacres and Matinees" would take a step back to fill things out a bit and set various arcs in motion. It also handily sets up a number of rivalries and alliances that we'll see play out over the season (see below for a more detailed breakdown). Still, it can be a little trying to watch an episode that feels like it's just setting things up and giving us little tastes of what the writers are building towards. Although lots of stuff happens, watching this episode felt a little like treading water.

FX has released a number of cast interviews from the set of American Horror Story: Freak Show in anticipation of the October 8 premiere. There's a slightly more generic behind-the-scenes video where the more famous cast members from Angela Bassett to Michael Chiklis talk about working on set. But the videos you should really watch are the ones with the actors on the show who were born with various congenital disorders. Mat Fraser, who plays Paul the Illustrated Seal, talks about being an actor with a "radical difference": "Freak means a radically different person on stage entertaining with their radical difference." He has a condition called phocomelia, which came about because thalidomide was prescribed to his mother for morning sickness. Another one of the actors, Rose Siggins, plays "Legless Suzi" was diagnosed with sacral agenesis, talks about giving birth to two kids and introducing herself to her kids' classmates. Watch...
