It was marketed as a utopia of British entertainment – a £365 million ($460 million) project that would be Europe‘s biggest indoor arena thanks to its 23,500 seats and standing spaces.
But what bosses had hoped to be an impressive display of the U.K.’s commitment to the arts turned out to be a somewhat embarrassing chain of events that saw concerts canceled, part of the ceiling coming apart, and its grand opening delayed.
On Tuesday, they finally did it: Manchester’s Co-op Live had its maiden gig, and around 12,000 people filed in to watch English rock band Elbow (who were originally meant to play the site’s 15th concert).
The venue’s largest shareholders include Harry Styles‘ label Erekine Records and City Football Group, a sports holding company that owns the likes of soccer club Manchester City and is 81 percent-owned by Abu Dhabi United Group, 18 percent by U.S. private equity...

Olivia Rodrigo’s upcoming concerts at Manchester, England’s new Co-Op Live arena have been called off. The singer was set to launch her U.K. tour at the venue on May 3 and 4 following a show in Dublin, however Co-Cop Live cited “technical issues” as it canceled multiple shows.
“I’ve been having such a great time in Europe so far and I’m sooooo disappointed that we’re unable to perform in Manchester due to ongoing technical issues,” Rodrigo wrote in an Instagram story. “We’re doing our best to reschedule the show.

Oak View Group, the global venue developer/investor co-founded by Irving Azoff and run by Tim Leiweke, is building a new $3 billion entertainment district in Las Vegas on 25 acres including an 850,000 square foot arena, amphitheater, casino and hotel.
The 20,000+-seat arena will have suites, premium hospitality clubs and host live events including concerts, sporting events, family entertainment, as well as conventions, award shows and international gatherings. Construction — with a focus on the prioritization of technology, sustainability, and green initiatives — is expected to create thousands of permanent and temporary local jobs.
“It doesn’t get much bigger or better than Las Vegas,” said Azoff, calling the development “the next jewel in the Ovg crown.”
The firm’s projects include the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle; the Ubs Arena in New York; and the soon-to-open Moody Center arena at the University of Texas in Austin.
Groundbreaking is expected in 2023 for the Vegas complex, located on 66.5 acres of land near the intersection of two major freeways, I-15 and I-215.
“South of the Las Vegas strip represents one of the few areas of potential future growth of the gaming and entertainment corridor,” said Oak View Group CEO Leiweke. He called the project “an industry game-changer” that will “usher in the evolution of Las Vegas as the new entertainment and sports capital of the world.”
Marc Badain, a veteran sports industry executive and former president of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders, has partnered with Ovg to spearhead and consult on the new project along with the President of Business Development, Francesca Bodie, who will oversee business transactions and operations. Development on what will be Ovg’s biggest project to date will be led by Steve Collins, its president of global venue development and special projects.
The complex is designed by architecture firms Gensler and Populous.
Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak said the new entertainment district “will help continue the state’s economic momentum and create thousands of jobs and greater prosperity for Nevadans.”
The development is adjacent to the planned Brightline high-speed rail station on that site that Ovg, citing estimates, said more than 13 million vehicles coming from California pass every year. The site will be a 15-minute drive to and from all major Las Vegas Strip resorts and the airport.
Ovg’s other upcoming projects include the Acrisure Arena in Coachella Valley; Arena São Paulo in Brazil; Baltimore Arena; FirstOntario Centre Arena; the New Arena at the Atlantic Wharf in Cardiff, Wales; and Co-op Live arena located in Manchester, which when completed in 2023, will be the largest arena in the UK.

Amazon acquired naming rights to what had been called KeyArena in Seattle. But the ecommerce giant isn’t going to splash its own name or logo on it.
Instead, the company will call the arena “Climate Pledge Arena,” the new home for the city’s future NHL franchise and the Wnba’s Seattle Storm. Currently undergoing a renovation, the 18,100-seat venue is slated to reopen in June 2021.
Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s mega-billionaire founder and CEO, said the new name is intended to be “a regular reminder of the importance of fighting climate change.”
News of the arena’s new name came two days after Amazon announced its creation of the $2 billion Climate Pledge Fund, a venture-investment vehicle to fund companies in industries including transportation and logistics, energy generation, storage and utilization, manufacturing and materials, “circular economy,” and food and agriculture.
In February, Bezos announced the $10 billion Bezos Earth Fund to...

In a letter addressed to the Recording Academy Board of Trustees, which is holding annual meetings in Hawaii this week, former MusiCares VP Dana Tomarken accuses chairman/president Neil Portnow of choosing to steer money away from the charity in order to fund a deficit from this year’s Grammy telecast, and of brokering a deal to hold the organization’s annual Person of the Year event at a venue that left the charity with a significant loss in 2018 fundraising efforts, resulting in a projected $1 million for this year’s event, as opposed to $5 million in 2017.
In the nearly 4,500-word letter, Tomarken, who was fired on April 16 after 25 years with the Academy, also claims wrongful termination, explaining that she and coworker Dorit Kalev were fired over the bill for a $2,500 MusiCares auction item that she was late in paying. She also says she was terminated “after a painful year of...
