One year ago, broadcast networks announced a flurry of new series like ABC’s “Downward Dog” and “Still Star-Crossed,” and NBC’s “Marlon” and “Midnight, Texas.” You probably don’t remember any of them, since they haven’t even aired yet. And if that seems more than a little ridiculous given the rapid-fire pace of Golden Age TV, you’re not alone.
Why do the networks still punish themselves with this annual fire drill? Cable and streaming services develop shows on their own timetable, and then launch when they’re ready. And if those shows fail, it’s not for lack of waiting for the right stars, or directors, to come along.
At the broadcast networks, the tight January-to-May turnaround means perhaps settling for second or third choices. What’s the point, if you’re just going to be sitting on a shelf until spring anyway?

"Fresh and richly intelligent." A new trailer has arrived online for an indie film titled As You Are, which premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival last year to positive reviews (here's my review). I'm glad to see this is finally being released soon, it's a great film. Owen Campbell stars as a teenager caught in a love triangle between his two friends - played by Charlie Heaton and Amandla Stenberg. The cast includes Mary Stuart Masterson, Scott Cohen and John Scurti. This is best to see without knowing too much going in, because the film reveals the truth as the story plays out. The trailer features the song "Appalachian Moon" written and performed by Kevin Reilly, included on the soundtrack. I recommend giving this a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Miles Joris-Peyrafitte's As You Are, direct from YouTube: Set in the early 1990's, As You Are...

Major Crimes will continue to be TNT's longest-running drama.
It was just renewed for a sixth season by the network.
The successful series predates current network head Kevin Reilly and a time when the net focused on procedural fare.
While the focus may be changing at the network, there's no denying the focus of TNT's audience.
This past summer, Major Crimes reached an average of 10 million viewers per episode across TNT's multiple platforms and finished the third quarter ranking as one of cable's Top 10 dramas with adults 18-49.
Initially launched as a follow-up to TNT's long-running hit The Closer, Major Crimes quickly established itself as a must-see drama in its own right.
In its first season, it ranked as cable's #1 new drama of 2012, and it has remained among the most-watched dramas on cable ever since.
Major Crimes centers on a special squad within the Lapd that deals with high-profile or particularly sensitive crimes.

Pilot season is very much alive at Fox. That was co-ceo/chairman Gary Newman’s message to TheWrap Monday when asked about former Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly’s bold 2014 claim that pilot season is a relic. Reilly told TV critics in 2014 that Fox would know longer follow broadcast TV’s traditional calendar, and made his point with an illustration of tombstones that said “R.I.P. Earlier this week came word that TNT's "Titans," the in-development live-action TV series adaptation of the DC superhero drama "Teen Titans," will not be going forward. Today, further information has come to light about why there was a failure to launch.
Speaking with The Live Feed, TNT's Cco Kevin Reilly says that issues with the script and the general over-saturation of the superhero genre is responsible for the network's decision to pass on the show:
"It wasn't [the fact that we didn't own the characters]. Akiva [Goldsman] is a talented guy, [but] the script just wasn't there. There is an unbelievable glut of superhero things in the market right now and if you have a really good one, clearly people are up for it. But I just don't think that there's a need for one that, for me, at least on paper didn't seem to be screaming to get made."

It was revealed yesterday that TNT has made the decision to pass on bringing a live-action Teen Titans series to their network. That came as a blow to fans who had been looking forward to seeing Nightwing and his fellow young heroes brought to life on the small screen, and while the show had been stuck in development hell quite a long time, it still came as a shock that TNT had passed on developing it.
So, why isn’t Titans happening? Well, TNT Chief Creative Officer Kevin Reilly has now shed some light on why exactly they decided that it wasn’t a good fit for the network:

News broke at the Television Critics Association yesterday that TNT would not be moving forward with their adaptation of DC Comics' "Teen Titans". The show had been slated as "in development" for some time, but the studio finally laid the project to rest yesterday. While at the TCA's, Turner Entertainment Chief Kevin Reilly laid out an aggressive five year plan to reboot TNT's main list of shows. He announced that some of TNT's most notable shows would not be getting renewed this year, like "Rizzoli and Isles", while other shows would be picked up, like "Angie Tribeca." Among the list of shows not moving forward at TNT was "Titans", a DC Comics-based show about some of DC's younger heroes, like Robin, Starfire, Raven, and Batgirl. On paper, a live-action Teen Titans shows appears to be a no-brainer. There's already public exposure for the team due to several animated programs. While the general public may have been confused as to how Nightwing fits into the Batman and Robin dynamic, the character of Dick Grayson is still a pop culture icon. However, TNT Chief Creative Officer Kevin Reilly told The Hollywood Reporter that issues with the script and the general saturation of superhero in the public sphere is what attributed to the basic cable network's decision to pass on the sho w. American channel TNT has rejected a pitch for teenaged superhero TV team-up Titans, but the project could yet live on…
Titans is one of those potential TV series that has been talked about for ages without seeming to gather much traction. As far back as September 2014, we’ve heard reports that Warner Bros and TNT were developing a live-action televised adaptation of DC's Teen Titans comic books, centred on Dick Grayson and a band of other young superheroes.
To add a bit of context, in our story from September 2014 I also said I was sceptical about the then-rumoured Supergirl series’ existence, as we hadn’t heard anything official about it yet. Look how that one turned out. But in the same time frame – no movement on Titans.
It doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, then, that TNT have finally said no to the idea.

A live-action show based on the young superhero team Teen Titans was in the works at TNT, and there was even a report last February about which members of the team were supposed to appear in the pilot. Things have been very quiet since then, and now EW has learned that's for good reason: the show is no longer in development at the network.
As for the reason why it's been cancelled, TNT president Kevin Reilly simply told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour that "We just decided it wasn’t quite where we wanted to go." That's probably a good thing. TNT isn't a network that anyone takes very seriously anyway, and maybe this will open the door for The CW to jump on the idea and either incorporate those characters into their DC-based live-action shows in some capacity (a few guest arcs on Legends of Tomorrow...

That may upset some fans, or it may have no effect on anybody, but TNT has reportedly passed on the "Teen Titans" television show they were offered by DC Comics. You can thank TNT's president Kevin Reilly for this, as he made the decision that it was best for TNT not to accept the TV show, as he seems to be taking TNT into a new and different direction in the coming years.
Even with Akiva Goldsman attached to the show to write it, nothing could've saved it from it's fate. In an era where such shows like "The Flash," "Arrow," "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," "Gotham," and "Agent Carter" thrive on network television, you can't help but wonder why TNT would turn away from an opportunity to now be involved in the comic book/superhero craze that is taking over pop culture by storm, and still making a pretty penny in the process of doing so.

It looks like we won't be getting another DC Comics TV Show as TNT has decided to cancel Teen Titans. Read on for more information.
The beloved characters of the Teen Titans franchise won't be gracing the small screen of TNT, anymore. Today, it was announced that the DC drama won't be greenlit, after all. This comes as a surprise as TNT President Kevin Reilly had initially said to TV Line, after meeting with the show's co-creator Akiva Goldsman,
"I think it’s going to end up being a very, very interesting offering, I think it’s going to be excellent.”
Months later, Reilly has changed his tune stating,
“We decided it wasn’t where we wanted to go,”.
TNT had only ordered a pilot, so this isn't a huge loss to the network. However, this news comes as a bummer to the fans excited for Teen Titans to get an actual live action show.

While fans of DC Comics properties are certainly enjoying an embarrassment of riches when it comes to seeing their favorite heroes dominate the small screen, sometimes disappointment abounds. We now have word that TNT has chosen not to move forward with the live action Titans TV series. As unfortunate as the news is, it should not come as too much of a shock since it has been nearly a year since any real news has been reported regarding the ill fated series.
It seemed the network was originally enthused about proceeding with the series’ development when TNT president Kevin Reilly told TV Line the following last May:

Akiva Goldsman (Batman Forever) was attached to write the pilot, but TNT President Kevin Reilly - who took over the network a few months after Titans came close to scoring a pilot order - made it clear to reporters at the Television Critics Association's press tour in Pasadena that this isn't the kind of series they have any interesting in developing. TNT has confirmed that the upcoming seventh season of its long-running crime drama "Rizzoli and Isles" will be the show's last. The series, the network's second-most-watched series in history behind only "The Closer," will bow out with a shortened thirteen-episode season starting this Summer.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association winter press tour this morning, TNT chief Kevin Reilly revealed that the network has also passed on its in-development drama "Titans" based on the "Teen Titans" DC Comics concept.
Talking with reporters, Reilly says: "We just decided it wasn't quite where we wanted to go." Akiva Goldsman and Marc Haimes were attached to the project about a group of young superheroes-to-be and their leader and former Robin turned Nightwing Dick Grayson. The project was first ordered to pilot back in late 2014.

Home, a family thriller/soap project from writer Aron Eli Coleite and Jerry Bruckheimer TV that Kevin Reilly originally developed at Fox during the 2013-2014 season, has found a new life at TNT, landing a pilot order after lengthy negotiations. In early 2014, Home became one of the poster children for Reilly’s new development model that was looking to render the traditional broadcast pilot season obsolete. The drama was given "an off-cycle commitment for further…...

Talking about her network’s preparations for a post-“American Idol” world Thursday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Fox Television Group CEO and Chairman Dana Walden sounded a familiar refrain for Fox: Bust up pilot season. “There’s a complete necessity to break out of that pilot cycle where we all cast and search for directors during the same six weeks of the year,” Walden said during her executive session Thursday, where she was joined onstage by fellow group chairman and CEO Gary Newman. Fox has long led the conversation about breaking up the traditional pilot-season process.

TV audiences crave answers and there's nothing dedicated viewers fear more than mythology-driven series that threaten to stretch out mysteries indefinitely or, alternatively, run the risk of getting cancelled without ever revealing the truth. Fox's new drama "Wayward Pines" is definitely heavy on mystery. Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) checks into a small Idaho town on an investigation and soon begins to realize that very little in Wayward Pines is what it seems to be. So what makes Wayward Pines unusual? What secrets are the residents harboring? And who knows these answers? Well, one person who knows the answers is "Wayward Pines" showrunner Chad Hodge, who created The CW's "Runaway" and NBC's "Playboy Club" before discovering Blake Crouch's book and adapting it on spec as a potential 10-episode story back in 2013, before "Fargo" and "True Detective" made everybody in TV giddy on the event series model. So...

One of the least discussed superhero-related TV series in development is TNT's "Titans," a live action adaptation of the "Teen Titans" comic titles. The project was announced back in September, and revealed its characters in February including Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon, Rachel Roth, Starfire, Hank Hall and Dawn Granger.
Speaking at the upfront presentations this week, TNT president Kevin Reilly revealed that series creator Akiva Goldsman has been "very busy doing some other things" and the project won't progress much further until they lock down a cast. The hope though is to get the series into production by this Summer.
Reilly also confirms that Goldsman wants to stay very true to the comic, with a storyline revolving around a Robin who has been betrayed by Batman:
"I sat down with Akiva and said - and he ultimately agreed - that the [TV] landscape right now is well-serviced on the superhero front.

While it's become apparent that we won't see Titans on TV this year, you'll be relieved to find out that the DC Comics adaptation is far from dead! TV Line caught up with TNT President Kevin Reilly to ask him about its current status, and things are sounding good...if not a little slow moving! Akiva Goldsman is writing the pilot with Marc Haimes, and rumour has it that Nightwing will be a lead character with Barbara Gordon, Hawk, Dove, Raven, and Starfire joining him. "Akiva’s been very busy doing some other things," he revealed before adding that they hope it will be "maybe this summer" that they start casting and ramping up production. With no superhero TV shows currently airing in the summer, Titans debuting in 2016 would actually be a great idea. "I sat down with Akiva and said — and he ultimately agreed — that the [TV] landscape right now...

Dana Walden and Gary Newman, the two veteran TV execs who took command of Fox last summer following the departure of longtime boss Kevin Reilly, have for the last few months made it very clear where they planned to take the network. "We're not looking to do smaller, dark programming. We're looking to have big, broad commercial hits,” Newman told The Hollywood Reporter in January, a not-so-subtle dig at Reilly’s penchant for cablelike shows such as Lone Star and Gracepoint. Based on the new lineup Fox revealed today, Walden and Newman are staying true to their word. The dramas are (mostly) lighthearted, even when crime is involved; the comedies are simple concepts with established stars. Fox may have lost 20 percent of its audience this season, but its plan to lure back viewers hinges on a heavy dose of optimism. As we noted earlier today, the centerpiece of Fox’s...

Looks like we may never find out what Mindy Lahiri’s parents think of Danny Castellano. In a move that isn’t exactly surprising, due to the show’s low ratings, Fox has officially cancelled The Mindy Project after three seasons. Unfortunately, the writing was on the wall for The Mindy Project. Although beloved by many critics (including myself), the series was never a hit during its three years on Fox, and its Season 3 finale only drew around 2 million viewers and 0.8 demo rating among adults 18-49. Add in the fact that one of its biggest supporters, Kevin Reilly, left Fox, and you have a recipe for cancellation. However, now that the bad news is out of the way, there is some more hopeful news to share. Despite being cancelled by Fox, sources are saying that The Mindy Project could be moving to Hulu. Universal TV, which owns The Mindy Project...

Don't freak out "Mindy Project" fans, but the low-rated and [in some small circles] adored comedy will not be back on Fox for a fourth season. I say "don't freak out," because although "The Mindy Project" has been cancelled by its original network, I'm hearing that conversations are taking place with Hulu about a multi-season renewal. How deep are the conversations? No clue. How many seasons does "multi-season" mean? Joe Adalian at Vulture says two, but nothing is signed or set in stone yet. This is the way many observers expected things to go down for "The Mindy Project." Fox floated the comedy, which was never a hit, for three years, but even by the standards of Fox's increasingly low-rated Tuesday night, it was getting harder and harder to justify giving a time period to a comedy with drew roughly 2 million viewers and a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49 in its finale. ["New Girl," already renewed, also drew only 2.2 million viewers in its finale, but the difference between a 0.8 and a 1.1 is not insignificant.] While "The Mindy Project...

Fox has just renewed Will Forte's The Last Man on Earth for a second season. The show has been a surprise success on Sunday nights, fitting in perfectly with Fox’s young-male-skewing comedy lineup and ranking as the season’s top-rated new comedy with viewers under 35 and men under 50. A passion project of former Fox chief Kevin Reilly, who snapped up Last Man when even some people associated with the production thought it was better suited for cable or Netflix, the show was widely seen as too “niche” for a major broadcast network. And yet, while ratings have fallen a bit in recent weeks, Last Man has struck a chord with younger viewers and has done particularly well once time-shifted and VOD viewers are included in its audience tally. Critics also were very kind to the show early in its run, serving up rave notices (though since then, a...

A few thoughts on last night's momentous "The Mindy Project" coming up just as soon as I turn this into a place where rescue dogs can get methadone... "No More Mr. Noishe Guy" was already going to be a notable episode as Adam Pally's farewell to the show(*), but Mindy Kaling and various people associated with the series and/or Fox began tweeting up a storm yesterday afternoon suggesting something much bigger than Peter's exit was about to happen. (*) If you like Pally, or Ben "Jean-Ralphio" Schwartz, or deconstructions of hallowed TV institutions, you owe it to yourself to check out Pally's recent stint as guest host of CBS' "Late Late Show," with Schwartz as his sidekick. The whole thing is strange and uncomfortable (particularly the Martellus Bennett interview) and wonderful; in the above link, Schwartz described it as "part talk show, part chaos, part improv but mostly two...

That makes six pilots ordered by the network this week
Fox has ordered a pilot for its untitled John Stamos comedy from ABC Studios, as well as a drama titled “Studio City,” which comes via Warner Bros. Television.
The Stamos vehicle is a single-camera comedy following a longtime bachelor whose life is upended when he discovers he’s a father — and a grandfather.
It is executive produced and written by Danny Chun (“Trophy Wife,” “Happy Endings”). In addition to the former “Full House” star himself getting a behind-the-scenes credit, Dan Fogelman (“Galavant,” “The Neighbors”) will also exec produce the project.

Winner of last year's Outstanding Animated Series Emmy, "Bob's Burgers" has been renewed for a sixth season on Fox. The network announced on Thursday (January 8) that it has picked up an additional 22 episodes of 'Bob's Burgers" for the 2015-16 season. "Bob's Burgers still has, by my unscientific count, 14 more episodes left to air this year in its fifth season. This is particularly good news for "Bob's Burgers" fans since the animated comedy is still relatively low-rated and lost a vocal champion in departed Entertainment President Kevin Reilly. This renewal is the show's first courtesy of new Fox Television Group Chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman. "We can't help but love the Belcher family. This gem of a series is a rare feel-good blend of sharp wit and genuine heart that fans and critics alike have continued to love throughout its five seasons on Fox," blurb Walden and Newman.
