As the actors strike entered its fourth month, morale among SAG-AFTRA members remained high despite no additional talks with the AMPTP, not to mention the picket-line hurdles of hurricanes and heat waves.
Stars, including Richard Gere, Kevin Bacon and “Abbott Elementary” Emmy winner Sheryl Lee Ralph, continued to show their support at picket lines in New York and Los Angeles.

Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels’ comment on Thursday that the media giant has saved $100 million since the strike began is not going over well with the actors and writers who are holding out for a better contract.
“That’s like half of what you spent on ‘The Flash’ movie that nobody saw,” “Mythic Quest” writer, actress and comedian Naomi Ekperigin told TheWrap in front of of Paramount Studios on Thursday.
“That really gets you out of the hole you put yourself into when you made the merger,” she joked.
“Community” star Charley Koontz told TheWrap: “I think it’s interesting that today $100 million, is a lot to them. That’s a great savings for them today. Before, it was a pittance, it’s not worth making anything that [will earn less than] that… But that’s also a fraction of what we’re asking for. So you know, if [Warner Bros. Discovery CEO...

Dan Harmon's "Community" is one of the best network sitcoms ever produced. Over six rocky seasons, during which the perennially low-rated series teetered on the brink of cancellation, Harmon and his phenomenal writing staff crafted a densely layered and wildly meta disquisition on what it means to be human. Seriously. A sitcom did this.
The show initially revolved around seven misfits who bond quickly as a study group at the fictional Greendale Community College. That the study group is formed under false pretenses (McHale's Jeff is trying to hook up with Jacobs' Britta) places all of the relationships on the shakiest of foundations. Before long, every character has their insecurities tattooed on their forehead, which leaves us wincing as hard as we laugh.
As the series segued into its second season, Harmon expanded the core to include disgraced Spanish teacher Ben Chang (Ken Jeong). Chang is the ultimate try-hard.

On Feb. 7, 2013, after delays and significant drama behind the scenes, Community debuted “History 101,” the first episode of the long-awaited fourth season, and the first under new showrunners David Guarascio and Moses Port. Fan reaction to the outing was mixed, to put it mildly, while critics were downright savage. Soon enough, cast and crew began to express their misgivings, too. The entire season was later written off in-universe as the result of a gas leak, never to be spoken of again.
Was that a fair assessment, though? Countless other “bad” installments of pop culture have been revisited over the years, only for perceived faults to be found not quite so damning as audiences initially thought. With an entire decade of hindsight and objectivity to reflect upon, was the fourth season of Community really that bad?
Kind of, yeah!

Netflix has pulled the “Community” Season 2 episode “Advanced Dungeons & Dragons,” which features Ken Jeong’s character, Ben Chang, wearing blackface during a game of “Dungeons & Dragons,” TheWrap has learned exclusively.
In this episode of the Dan Harmon-created series, the study group gets together to play a game of “D&d” with fellow Greendale student “Fat Neil” (played by Charley Koontz). Chang shows up to the game wearing a white wig, with black makeup covering all of his exposed skin. When Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown) says, “So, we’re just going to ignore that hate crime, huh?” Chang responds, “I’m a dark elf or a drow.” Chang proceeds to play the game dressed that way, acting as the character “Brutalitops the Magician,” until he is killed and eliminated.

Richard Erdman, known among classic film buffs for the war dramedy “Stalag 17” but remembered by millennials for his work on “Community” as Greendale’s smart-alecky Leonard Rodriguez, died Saturday. He was 93.
Film historian Alan K. Rode broke the news on Twitter Saturday, stating simply, “Goodbye pal. Dick Erdman 1925-2019.” No additional information on his passing were given.
Erdman won over a new generation with his debut in “Community”‘s fifth episode “Advanced Criminal Law.” During one of his custom end-of-episode speeches, Joel McHale’s Jeff Winger declared that everyone at Greendale was nuts, to which Leonard yelled from the school’s swimming pool, “Not me!”

When a new CSI show is premiered it has a hard task to live up to the shows that have run before them. This was one problem with CSI: Cyber.
We last saw Avery Ryan (Patricia Arquette) in CSI: Las Vegas when she appeared as the “Cyber” expert, helping on a case. Now in her own environment she has her own team of hackers, as well as former marine Elijah Mundo (James Van Der Beek) fighting against the rising world of cyber-crime. Using Patricia Arquette as the lead character was a good move, and the character of Avery Ryan is interesting. Her history of being a psychologist who had her records hacked leading to her patients becoming vulnerable to this attacker makes for a deep and interesting character.

It's the end of an era and the end of one of television's most successful franchises. To little surprise, CBS has cancelled CSI: Cyber after two short seasons.
CSI: Cyber revolves around the work of the Cyber Crime Division of the FBI. It's a unit at the forefront of solving illegal activities that start in the mind, live online, and play out in the real world. This crime drama stars Patricia Arquette, James Van Der Beek, Hayley Kiyoko, Charley Koontz, Shad Moss, and Ted Danson.

Wow. Another CSI spin-off bites the dust. After two seasons of cyber crime fighting, CSI: Cyber, the fourth and final addition to the CSI franchise has been written off, for lack of a better phrase, by CBS. I am both saddened and shocked by this news. A few weeks ago, I replied to a tweet posted by Charley Koontz, who plays Agent Daniel Krumitz, on Twitter. I had asked him if the show is coming back for a third season and he said that they will know in a week or so. We both hoped that it would be

CSI: Cyber is bringing a familiar face to the team — and saying goodbye to a different one. The CBS procedural's season-two premiere airs Sunday, picking up after last season's finale in which Avery (Patricia Arquette) tracked down the person who had hacked her, while David Krumitz's (Charley Koontz) sister Francine (Angela Trimbur) murdered the man who killed their parents. While we still don't know the fate of the origiinal CSI series yet, we do know that one of the franchise's shows will be on the schedule next season. CBS has renewed newbie CSI: Cyber for a second season.

A quick review of this week's "Community" (available, as usual, on Yahoo Screen) coming up just as soon as I'm stoked for "Avengers"... "Basic Email Security" was, as Abed acknowledged in one of the closing scenes, the third in what's for now been a trilogy of "Community" stories where the group turns on each other as various secrets come out. (See also season 2's "Cooperative Calligraphy" and last season's "Cooperative Polygraphy.") There was definitely a sense of diminishing returns with this one, even with a parody of the Sony hacking scandal(*) grafted on top of it. (*) Sony, of course, produces "Community." But there were a few twists and tweaks to the familiar structure that made this a fun one. First, we got to see what it would be like if Britta was the group's leader, delivering the rambling speeches and firing everyone up, and the episode presented her as a mix of inspiring and,...

Contracted
Stars: Najarra Townsend, Charley Koontz, Matt Mercer, Alice Macdonald, Katie Stegeman, Caroline Williams | Written and Directed by Eric England
Contracted, originally screened at Frightfest back in 2013, stars Najarra Townsend as Samantha, a young woman who contracts something nasty after being date-raped at a party. Over the course of a few short days, she begins bleeding from pretty much every orifice and quite literally falling to bits. Her already fragile relationships with her friends, colleagues and mother (Caroline Williams) also start to break down as she refuses to seek help and becomes increasingly isolated.
The body horror elements within the film were really well done – that is to say, very icky. Cronenberg fans will be well satisfied with the deterioration of the flesh on display here. The film’s portrayal of an insular and personal crisis is well done. Samantha is on a self-destructive path in addition to the horrifying illness she finds herself with.

Perhaps to distract from tired dialogue and convenient plot holes, or simply in attempt to suck as much entertainment from the world as possible, the latest iteration of the timeworn CSI franchise wastes no time in trying to scare the audience. Yes, from baby kidnapping to murderous car services to dysfunctional roller coasters and subways, CSI: Cyber will try and unnerve. That is, however, only if you buy into the more ridiculous elements of this CBS drama that deals with a ‘new type of criminal” dabbling in nefarious, murderous acts that can happen to anyone, even you.

“[Elijah Mundo] is an expert in battlefield forensics recruited by Special Agent Avery Ryan (series star Patricia Arquette) for his war efforts in Afghanistan. Mundo is a savant when it comes to weaponry, vehicles and bombs,” CBS announced Wednesday, according to Entertainment Weekly. “A self-proclaimed action junkie, Agent Mundo will often put himself at risk to seek permanent justice, while Ryan will level his diehard behavior with her expertise in psychology. Together, they will team up to fight the world’s toughest cyber crimes.”

I don't know about you, but I'm a big fan of those reality ghost hunting shows. I find them extremely entertaining for some reason. Well, writer and director Andrew P. Jones took the basic concept of those shows and turned it into a movie, but with everything a little over-exaggerated. The movie is called Haunting of Cellblock 11. It may not look like the best movie to some of you, but sometimes I enjoy watching a ridiculous B horror movie. Here's a detailed synopsis:
In Haunting of Cellblock 11, a television ghost hunting show called "Ghost Sightings" is having trouble capturing compelling paranormal activity and faces possible cancellation by the TV network. As luck would have it, they are approached by an elderly man who is being tormented by entities and needs the team's help to rid him of his unrelenting demons. In a last ditch effort to capture apparitional evidence,...

Ever since it's release via IFC Midnight on March 18, 2014, filmmaker Eric England's indie 'body horror' flick Contracted has been burning up DVD and VOD, and we've got first word on the successful feature's inevitable sequel.
Starring Najarra Townsend, Caroline Williams (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Alice Macdonald, Katie Stegeman, Matt Mercer, Charley Koontz, Simon Barrett, Ruben Pla, Dave Holmes and Celia Finkelstein, Contracted revolves around a 20's something Los Angeleno (Townsend), who finds herself infected with a rather potent sexual disease after being date-raped at a party.
"IFC has asked us for a sequel," filmmaker England, whose previously wrote and directed the genre feature Madison County, told us this morning of a potential follow-up to Contracted.
"I told the producers I wasn't interested, because I never envisioned a sequel in the first place, but if I came up with an idea that I felt lived up to or surpassed the first...

In college, I remember taking a class in which the professor showed a public service announcement that warned young adults about date-rape. The overall message—like in any stranger-danger warning—was that the effects of the incident don’t end with the morning-after guilt and that there is a fair chance that it could have been prevented all together.
It could be easily said that Contracted (2013) is like an hour and a half-long PSA, but it digs so much deeper than that. It reveals the daily self-consciousness and indignity endured by many women and the great lengths to which they are willing to go in order to achieve love and acceptance.
Written and directed by Eric England (Madison County), Contracted tells the story of Samantha, a young woman uncertain of her sexuality and desperate to rekindle her relationship with her girlfriend Nikki. While at a friend’s party,...

In Contracted a 20-something girl gets what she thinks is an Std after a night of reckless partying… turns out, it’s far worse than anything she could ever have imagined. Writer-director Eric England puts a strange, sexual new twist on the zombie genre, and he’s here to explain how and why!
Dread Central: Ok, so let’s face it… Contracted (review here) isn’t for everybody. How’s reaction to the film been so far?
Eric England: Really positive actually. I am really happy with how they…. I don’t wanna say I am shocked, but I don’t think you go in thinking they are going to love it. It’s been really good.
DC: I would have to say I was shocked, I will use the word, because it's not the kind of movie that is just another viral zombie thing… you really put a unique slant on it.

Eric England’s “Contracted” has the potential to turn into a truly disturbing slice of bodily horror a la some of David Cronenberg’s best work. The tale of a lesbian woman who literally starts falling apart after a sexual encounter at a party could have been a commentary on sexuality, a riff on our national obsession with looking perfect, a cautionary tale about drinking, or even just a twisted slice of grotesque horror.
It ends up all and none of the above thanks to a dull script and style-less direction from England. The filmmaker is lucky that the fearless Najarra Townsend keeps the piece from crumbling entirely.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Townsend stars as Samantha, a girl who seems like she might be on the edge of a mental collapse before the physical one that overtakes her in the film. She’s leaving messages for her girlfriend Nikki (Katie Stegeman) that are...

Dread Central: Eric told me that you are quite a trooper considering all the makeup and everything you had to go through. Can you tell me a little bit about what that process was like for you, having to sort of do your thing without being able to see?
Najarra Townsend: We luckily had an amazing special effects artist. She just made everything comfortable. I feel like this could have been a disaster for my face, but luckily she was awesome. I just found it to be really fun. I mean, there were challenges that came with it, [but] even the not seeing kind of helped with my character.

Did the condom-industrial complex (or “Big Propha,” as we conspiracy theorists like to call it) secretly finance Contracted? Probably not. But this new horror film from writer-director Eric England (Madison County) does sound like the ultimate in safe-sex commercials. Najarra Townsend (Me and You and Everyone We Know) plays a young woman named Samantha who contracts a gruesome disease after spending the night with a mysterious man (You’re Next screenwriter Simon Barrett) in what is being hyped as “a zombie film like you’ve never imagined.”
