It’s the execution that matters in thrillers, and Dangerous Waters is one film that dwindles a lot in that department. Directed by John Barr, the film is one of the last performances by Ray Liotta, and this movie is dedicated to his memory. Besides that, the interesting part about this movie is that there is a lot of emphasis on grit and survival in the plot. The whole film screams of being a low-budget cult film, but there just isn’t that ‘x factor’ present to make it so. Odeya Rush, Eric Dane, and Saffron Burrows are good performers who understand the tone of the film, and they are cast quite brilliantly, but the structure and believability of the scenario of the film don’t do justice to the otherwise decent thriller.

One of the things that most drew actress Odeya Rush to “Dangerous Waters” was how the story develops and ends. In the film, now available on demand, Rush — plays Rose alongside Eric Dane and the late Ray Liotta.
Rose’s mother Alma (Saffron Burrows) drags her daughter along on a sailing trip with Derek Stipes (Eric Dane), Alma’s new boyfriend. The plan is to chart a course to Bermuda, but things go wildly wrong along the way. Rose first grows suspicious of Derek because he has guns stowed on his boat. Unfortunately, some of his old colleagues, now seemingly enemies, raid Derek’s boat and shoot Rose’s mother.
“It was complicated because Rose has really good instincts and she’s seen her mom get hurt. She’s taking the parental role. Rose smells out Derek from the beginning and she still wants her mom to be happy,” Rush...

Ray Liotta's "powerful" final scene in 'Dangerous Waters' blew the cast and crew away. The 'Goodfellas' star – who died aged 67 while the picture was being filmed in the Dominican Republic in May last year – epic performance in his closing scene as The Captain left a lasting impression on director John Barr. The filmmaker told MovieWeb: "What he achieves in a six-or-seven-minute span is just art."The arc that he goes through, from innocent to terrifying, it's so powerful and it's a testament to how incredible he was as an actor."The scene captures Liotta's character's shift from good to evil and was filmed several times as a result. Barr was left astounded at how the 'Field of Dreams' actor would become more and more formidable with each take.He explained: "The way that we played that scene was really interesting, because we talked about it a lot,...

Dangerous Waters is a notable release for the fact that it’s Ray Liotta’s very final turn, though it should also be commended for an impressive leading performance too, from Israeli-American actress Odeya Rush. To mark the film’s release we had the pleasure in speaking to her via Zoom, as she talks about the challenges in shooting a film that requirs such physicality, and her own thoughts on the action genre.
She also talks about her experience working alongside the iconic Liotta, while she looks back on other noteworthy collaborations, such as Greta Gerwig in Ladybird, and Larry David in Curb, which we naturally are intrigued to discuss.
Watch the full interview with Odeya Rush here:
Synopsis
A sailing adventure to Bermuda spirals out of control when 19-year-old Rose discovers the hidden depths of her mother’s new boyfriend and his connection to a dark underworld led by The Captain.

Odeya Rush gets a decent showcase in John Barr’s undeniably entertaining family drama, unsubtle and faintly ludicrous
After a shaky start on land, this maritime thriller unexpectedly turns into a passable showcase for its young Israeli-American star Odeya Rush, who we see transform from sullen teenager to crack-shot commando in a little over 90 minutes. Claustrophobic family drama, survivalist ordeal and balls-to-the-wall action barnstormer – any one of these would have amply filled out a single film. But director John Barr chucks all three into an unsubtle and faintly ludicrous outing that at least is never boring.
Rose (Rush) gets an invite on board a Bermuda-bound yacht, via her mother Alma (Saffron Burrows) who is being romanced by private security consultant Derek (Eric Dane). Grossed out by their middle-aged canoodling, Rose is nevertheless chuffed for her mother, who has raised her solo. But she begins to have suspicions about Alma’s...

A year following his passing, Ray Liotta‘s cause of death has been revealed. The 67-year-old actor died in his sleep from pulmonary edema and acute heart failure, according to reports. Documents obtained say the Goodfellas star had fluid in his lungs, suffered from respiratory issues, and his death was “categorized as natural and nonviolent.” Reports also state Liotta was battling atherosclerosis, which builds up thick plaque in the arteries. Adventurous filmgoers who are looking for a bit of a break from the onslaught of Summer blockbusters may wish to take in this tale of a very different kind of cinema protagonist. And if you’ve just completed college, well then you may identify with this character. He does harken back a bit to the title hero of The Graduate, though his problems aren’t quite as catastrophic. Still, he’s at a crossroads, not sure which trail to pursue. And this somewhat odd title, well it refers to one possible path. Or, to build on the dance metaphor, it’s a lucrative side “hustle”. For a fella’ that’s “flailing about”, he wishes his life was confident like the lyric Cha Cha Real Smooth.

The movie follows 22-year-old Andrew (played by Raiff), who’s fresh out of college and stuck at home with his family in New Jersey, with no clear life path. Andrew has no ambition and no real skills, except for one: he knows how to get a party started. This skill lands him the perfect job of motivational dancing at the bar and bat mitzvahs for his younger brother’s classmates. Things change for Andrew when he meets a local mother named Domino, played by Johnson. He befriends the mom and her daughter, Lola, and finally discovers a future he wants.

On the heels of their Best Picture-winning Coda, Apple TV+ is gearing up for the release of another major Sundance acquisition: Cooper Raiff’s sophomore feature Cha Cha Real Smooth, which they picked up for around 15 million out of the festival. Also starring Dakota Johnson, Evan Assante, Vanessa Burghardt, Leslie Mann, Brad Garrett, Raúl Castillo, and Odeya Rush, the film follows a recent college graduate who finds a job as a party hype man at local bar and bat mitzvahs and strikes up a connection with Johnson’s character, who is married. Ahead of the June 17 release, the first trailer has now arrived.

Sandra Oh fears she’s turning into her mother in Umma, the Sam Raimi-produced debut from writer-director Iris K. Shim. Using horror tropes to explore various elements of personal trauma, it’s light on scares, but compensates with strong character work and an emotionally engaging central dynamic.
Oh plays Amanda, a first-generation Korean-American woman who lives with her home-schooled teenage daughter Chrissy (Fivel Stewart) on a remote farm where they sell their own organic honey, with the help of a kind-hearted local shopkeeper (Dermot Mulroney). As the film begins, their main problem is that Amanda’s apparent allergy to electricity has begun to impact Chrissy’s burgeoning social life, especially after she befriends the shopkeeper’s visiting niece (Odeya Rush) and suddenly needs a phone for the first time in her life.

It’s an eternal middle-aged anxiety: “I feel like I’m turning into my mother.” And it’s given a most literal rendering in Iris K. Shim’s supernatural horror exercise “Umma,” in which Sandra Oh stars as a rural beekeeper inhabited by the vengeful spirit of her estranged mom. But while that premise might sound like the makings of a tongue-in-cheek body-swap fright-fest, “Umma” has far heavier issues on its plate, which proves both its chief virtue and its ultimate undoing, as it never manages to thread the needle between its horror setpieces and the more serious themes of generational trauma lying beneath.
Set in an unnamed stretch of American farmland, “Umma” opens on Amanda (Oh), a resourceful first-generation Korean American who has managed to construct a stable life selling organic honey to a devoted online fanbase of influencers. Not that she knows what the terms “influencer” or “online...

Becoming your mother, through the inevitability of time and genetics, is a scary prospect for some, but in “Umma,” a woman must contend with being possessed by her mother and, along with that, years of abuse and generational trauma.
In Iris K. Shim’s debut film, Sandra Oh stars as Amanda, a Korean American woman who has escaped all semblance of her past and is raising a precocious daughter on a remote farm. Amanda and Chrissy are as tight-knit as a mother and daughter can be; they read together, they work together, they hum together. On the farm, they harvest honey from a handful of bee colonies, which they package themselves and give to their friend Danny (Dermot Mulroney) to sell at his shop. It’s a steady, quiet life, but Amanda is haunted by memories of abuse at the hands of her mother (Meewha Alana Lee) — or her “umma,...

Dakota Johnson, star and producer of “Cha Cha Real Smooth,” said she first got to know director-writer-actor Cooper Raiff by seeing his debut feature film “Sh-House,” a SXSW winner about a tender college romance. Raiff wrote, directed and starred in that film as well.
“I just found him to be supremely intelligent, but soulful and sweet and complicated and accessible,” Johnson said at TheWrap’s virtual Sundance studio. She was joined by Raiff and “Cha Cha” cast members Leslie Mann, Evan Assante, Vanessa Burghardt, Raúl Castillo, Brad Garrett and Odeya Rush.
Raiff added, “When we first met, it was electric chemistry.”
Johnson said she loved the movie’s title. In the film, a 22-year-old college grad (Raiff), who is working as a bar mitzvah party starter, begins a friendship with a young mother (Johnson) and an autistic girl (Burghardt). The “Cha Cha Slide” song and dance are highly popular on the bar mitzvah circuit.

With a promising start with his first film Shithouse for which he starred, directed and wrote and won the Grand Jury Narrative Prize at SXSW, Cooper Raiff looms now also to be one of the breakouts of this year’s Sundance Film Festival where Cha Cha Real Smooth, his small but splendid second film for which he performs the same triple threat duties debuted Sunday as part of the Dramatic Competition lineup. I can only imagine if the festival had managed to be in person as originally planned rather than virtual in this Omicron-stricken year it would be met with a massive standing ovation. Raiff is bound to become an indie darling as if further proof was needed, but Cha Cha Real Smooth cements him as the real deal both in front of and behind the camera.

Many corners of popular culture, from talk show “Desus & Mero” to sitcom revival “One Day at a Time” to sweatshirts on Instagram, have been putting forward a very positive message about mental health, championing therapy while also destigmatizing anxiety. That spirit of supportiveness suffuses “Pink Skies Ahead,” a coming-of-age tale of a young writer who learns to let go of her anxiety over having anxiety. (The film has been acquired by MTV Studios for worldwide release following its premiere at AFI 2020.)

Kelly Oxford can do anything, it seems: She’s a bestselling author, a social media star, and a newly minted filmmaker. And she did it all while managing an anxiety disorder she was diagnosed with at the tender age of 19. As a 43-year-old single mother of three, Oxford still has to deal with those feelings — she’s the first one to tell you they never just go away — but now she’s harnessed them to craft her directorial debut, “Pink Skies Ahead,” which debuts October 18 at AFI Fest.
