Born in Bielefeld, Germany, Gregor Bonse discovered film sound after spending his youth exploring jazz and theater. In 2007, he moved to Berlin to attend The Film University Babelsberg and found a mentor in German mixing icon
Martin Steyer. His studies took him to São Paulo where he collaborated with the acclaimed re-recording mixer
José Luiz Sasso on films like
A Suprema Felicidade (2010) by
Arnaldo Jabor. Before graduating, Gregor met the American filmmaker
Damian John Harper who invited him to New York City to shoot
Teardrop (2011). They continued their collaboration and anthropological approach to sound design on award-winning films such as
Los Ángeles (2014).
Today, as a re-recording mixer based in Berlin, Gregor frequently accompanies films from script development to final mix, exploring the question of how sound drives story. He has been a nominee (
Iceman (2017)) and a winner (
System Crasher (2019)) of the German Film Award for Best Sound.
