The Legend is Born: Ip Man is a 2010 Hong Kong semi-biographical martial arts film about the early life of Ip Man (also spelled as Yip Man) and his journey to becoming a Wing Chun master whilst resisting the influence of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce, aims to dominate China and secure its vast raw resources. Ip is probably most famous in the West as the teacher of legendary martial arts actor Bruce Lee.
The film starts with a montage of images and banners from the early 1900s, of the increasingly nationalistic Chinese resisting pressure from Japan who in 1915 issued the Twenty-One Demands to extort political and commercial privilege from China after the First Sino-Japanese War. This won’t mean much to casual viewers, but even...

Herman Yau's prequel to the excellent Ip Man films starring Donnie Yen is currently making its way through theaters in the U.S. The Legend Is Born: Ip Man focuses on the younger-day exploits of the real life Wing Chun grandmaster. This time, Yu-hang To plays the title chartacter, but many of the supporting case from the first movies returns, including Sammo Hung and Siu-wong Fan. Sammo and martial arts legend Yuen Biao have a fight scene (which is reason enough to want to see the movie) and 86-year-old Ip Chun, Ip Man's real life son, even makes an appearance.

The Legend is Born – Ip Man is a semi-biographical martial arts film based on the events in the early life of Wing Chun master Yip Man (also spelled as Ip Man). The film’s story is not related to Wilson Yip’s Ip Man starring Donnie Yen. Instead the film focuses on Yip Man’s early life and the story of how he learned the martial arts style of Wing Chun. In contrast, Ip Man and Ip Man 2 which focus on the events in his life that took place during the Second Sino-Japanese War and after he moved to Hong Kong. The film was directed by one of the most prolific directors in Hong Kong, Herman Yau and stars Dennis To in the title role as Yip Man. Look out for the special appearance by Ip Chun, son of Yip Man, who plays Leung Bik in the film, as well...

Ip Man 2 is the latest DVD release from Cine Asia, and is a semi-biographical martial arts film loosely based on the life of Wing Chun grandmaster, Ip Man. The film was directed by Wilson Yip & Sammo Hung, produced by Raymond Wong, written by Edmond Wong, and stars martial arts legend, Donnie Yen, who reprises the leading role.
This sequel continues on from events in the first Ip Man film, and covers Ip Man’s life in Hong Kong, which was at the time under British colonial rule, and recovering from the Japanese invasion of China. Director: Herman Yau. Review: Adam Wing. You can’t have enough of a good thing, can you? The success of Donnie Yen’s Ip Man not only gave birth to a successful sequel, it also walks hand in hand with this entertaining prequel - The Legend Is Born: Ip Man. Herman Yau’s film is an old school addition that deals with the younger-day exploits of the Wing Chun grandmaster. Yau takes the helm and some of the original cast members return in new roles. The legendary Sammo Hung appears all too briefly in the opening act, and after playing minor parts in the original films, To is asked to take over as the young protagonist. The screen positively ignites when old friend Yuen Biao joins Sammo, and newcomers Huang Yi, Bernice Liu, Rose Chan, Xu Jiao and Lam Suet more than make up the numbers. Not only that, in...

UK martial arts fans who enjoyed (and what’s not to?) Wilson Yip’s best-selling martial arts epic, IP Man - starring Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung - might do well to check out Herman Yau’s prequel pic The Legend Is Born: Ip Man which is hitting your shores this month. Unlike the first two movies, legend follows Ip Man's early years beginning at the start of his journey from initial training, through to the ultimate battle to become supreme master of the art of Wing Chun. While it might lack some of the glitz and gloss of Donnie’s Ip Man, it still has some great fights scenes featuring Sammo Hung, with the added plus that it stars Ip Man’s real life son, 76-year-old Ip Chun, as Ip Man’s kung fu master. The Legend Is Born is out on September 20th. Legend trailer...
