Following last year’s Cult Hero, director Jesse Thomas Cook and writer Tony Burgess are back with their fifth collaboration The Hyperborean which played at this year’s Blood in the Snow Film Festival. And right from the opening animation depicting some fictional strangeness afflicting the nonfictional McClure Arctic Expedition, it’s obvious this is as strange as anything they’ve given us before.
Diana sits at a table in a large conference room with Mr. da Silva and Ms. Ladouceur (Marcia Alderson; Cult Hero), two lawyers and eventually Mr. Denbok, a crisis manager, or spin doctor as they used to be called, who represent her late father Hollis’ (Tony Burgess) corporate interests. Their first question “How did your father die?...

As In Its Wake begins Pastor Kurdt Waidmann is having a crisis of faith and asks God for a sign. He no sooner finishes than he gets the news that one of his parishioners was killed by a hit-and-run driver right outside the church. That probably wasn’t the sign he wanted, but The Lord works in mysterious ways.
In a restaurant, four friends Amy (Paige Foskett; Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities), Laura, Tim and Manny are trying to figure out what to do with their weekend.
At a nearby table, three businessmen Mitch, Sean, and Sam are doing the same. Until Sam decides to start trouble. But, before he and Tim can start throwing punches a familiar face appears and defuses the situation.

Uncork’d Entertainment has acquired Lee Foster’s supernatural horror In It’S Wake with plans to release on digital and DVD this August.
There’s nowhere to go… In the past, it’s been called The Wild Hunt, a time when holy men who have strayed from the path find themselves pursued by dark forces. With two groups of unsuspecting young travelers caught in between, a former minister encounters such a force as the sinister Duke of Crows unleashes his hound, a vicious drude that leaves nothing but death in its wake.
“With great creature effects, fun direction, and a wonderful mesh of religious horror and thrills – much like one of the big films of 2023, The Pope’s Exorcist – In It’s Wage is likely going to have many anticipating its release in August.”, said Keith Leopard, President Uncork’d Entertainment.

"When I'm done with you, no one will remember who you are." Retro Video Pictures has debuted a trailer for Forgotten Trash, a wacky 80s throwback indie creation made by filmmaker Brandon Espana. A film graduate stumbles across an alien in the woods who convinces him to help with an intergalactic television show. In it, the alien travels from planet to planet torturing and killing its inhabitants. Rather than adding digital effects, Espana shot the movie on a MiniDV camcorder then transferred it to VHS to get the grainy visuals. It plays like a genuine relic rather than a pastiche of tongue-in-cheek nostalgia. "I wasn't trying to make something self-referential," he explains. "It was always intended to be a straightforward, low-budget genre movie that draws influence from '70s and early '80s regional horror." The indie film stars Connor McDonald and Steve Kasan. "Clocking in at just shy of an hour,...

Many modern films embrace 1980s nostalgia, but few embody the lo-fi aesthetic like Forgotten Trash. The shot-on-video sci-fi horror movie is available for digital download from Retro Video Pictures. Here’s the trailer:
A recent film school graduate stumbles across an alien in the woods who convinces him to help with an intergalactic television show. Little does he know that the extraterrestrial entertainment involves traveling from planet to planet and killing the inhabitants.
Forgotten Trash is written and directed by Brandon Espana, whose passion for filmmaking bleeds into the storyline along with social commentary regarding media consumption. Connor McDonald and Steve Kasan star.

It feels like a while since I’ve watched a horror anthology. Often highly entertaining and one of my favourite (if quite small) sub genres of horror. The Final Ride features just three stories and one wrap around that links them altogether.
All starting with a tale I’ll call Fitness. And it’s a pretty odd start to proceedings but I’m good with that. We see young couple buying their first home and everything seems perfect until they find some old VHS tapes hidden in the house. You might think you know where this s heading but you really don’t! Where to start with Konga TNT? How about the same place I started with when reviewing director Brett Kelly’s Ouija Shark… in that you really have to be in the right mindset to watch Kelly’s particular brand of low-budget genre fare. Or ridiculously drunk and/or wasted!
Like Ouija Shark, Konga TNT harkens back to the shot on video era of filmmaking, where friends got together to make films that remarkably made it to video stores, thanks to a film-hungry rental market. Of course here we’re obviously dealing with mofre modern technology but the ethos behind it still feels very old-school. In this case Kelly apparently shot footage with his kids during lockdown to keep them occupied and...

This uncalled-for parody features a sparky cast, but there’s an excess of smut and the festive fun soon fizzles out
The syrupy Hallmark Christmas movie isn’t exactly top of the list for pressing satirical targets – but we’re getting a parody anyway, courtesy of this oppressively ironic Canadian film co-written and directed by Jake Horowitz. “Whatever you do, don’t fall in love with some small-town, eight-out-of-10 stranger and find the true meaning of Christmas,” plucky big-city magazine writer Mary (Storm Steenson) is warned by her boss – thereby rendering plot summary superfluous as she is dispatched to her home town Snowy Heights to get the generic scoop.
This sort of knowing snark is briefly fun, as Mary meets the townsfolk. The eight-out-of-10 is Chris (Alexander Oliver), owner of local cafe Cup of Cheer, whose brother Keith (Liam Marshall) is a pole-dancing elf. Sheriff Rudolph (Steve Kasan) is “the...

"Is that a candy cane or are you just happy to see me?" Ohhh boy. IndieCan Ent from up in Canada has also released an official trailer for a comedy titled Cup of Cheer, from Toronto filmmaker Jake Horowitz. "Yuk it up this November with a riotously funny new satire of every cheesy Christmas Movie you've ever seen!" A wacky new comedy in the tradition of classics spoofs Flying High!, Airplane, and The Naked Gun, Cup of Cheer arrives on VOD this November. A big city journalist goes to a small town for the holidays and finds herself in an unlikely romance with the owner of a struggling hot cocoa shop. Cup of Cheer stars Storm Steenson as Mary, plus Steve Kasan, Shawn Vincent, Adam Jenner, Liam Marshall, & Alexander Oliver. Sad to say this looks awful. I guess they just don't make spoof comedies like they used to anymore. Here's...

The concept behind writer/director Justin McConnell's latest horror movie is fantastic: a guy with the ability to shapeshift by killing his victims, goes on a murderous spree in an attempt to rekindle a relationship with the woman he loves.
It seems that McConnell's Lifechanger does offer up a reason as to why the shapeshifter needs to change bodies so many times but it seems what's most notable of the movie is that at just shy of 90 minutes long, it moves quickly; "Even the gore is efficient."
Lifechanger stars Elitsa Bako, Lora Burke, Jack Foley, Sam James White, Steve Kasan, Bill Oberst Jr. and Rachel Vanduzer.

"In the quiet moments, my thoughts always turn to her." Uncork'd Entertainment has debuted a new trailer for an intriguing horror thriller titled Lifechanger, from Canadian filmmaker Justin McConnell. The film premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival earlier this year, and it's described as a horror thriller about a "murderous shapeshifter [who] sets out on a blood-soaked mission to make things right with the woman he loves." Though a different description says that he's "not so much a shapeshifter as a body thief", moving from body to body until it decomposes too much. The film stars Lora Burke, Jack Foley, Elitsa Bako, Rachel VanDuzer, Steve Kasan, Sam White, Peter Higginson, and Bill Oberst Jr. as the voice of Drew. This looks crazy gnarly, especially all the body switches and gore. Here's the new red band trailer (+ poster) for Justin McConnell's Lifechanger, direct from YouTube: And here's the original first trailer for Justin McConnell's Lifechanger,...

Lifechanger is a Canadian film. You might not think Canada is best known for its horror movies but it’s delivered some very good ones and some very important ones. From Black Christmas to Cube to Backcountry to Prom Night, it’s a list that could go on and on.
The basic story here, like many movies, is at the surface, very simple. A ‘being’, not really human moves from body to body of its victims. It believes it has to kill to stay alive and these deaths become very frequent as the host body deteriorates. But entwined with this is a love story that has lasted beyond each human body. Okay, they may have sounded a little bit complicated but this is a surprisingly easy film to follow.

Ahead of Lifechanger's world premiere at this year's Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, the film's first official trailer and poster have been revealed, hinting at a transformation of sorts for potentially more than just one character. The film touts an impressive cast, including Lora Burke, Jack Foley, Elitsa Bako, Sam James White, Rachel Vanduzer, Steve Kasan, and Bill Oberst Jr., and we have a look at the trailer and poster:

An indie sci-fi series is taking an innovative approach to distribution. A group of Toronto-based creators are seeking $40,000 on Indiegogo for ten episodes of Out of Time, a thrilling time travel story. When the funds are raised, the production team behind the series plans to screen it in ten different movie theaters across the Us and Canada, giving viewers a chance to experience their work on the big screen. Out of Time began as a single thirty minute pilot, and after gaining some acclaim at local festivals, its team put pedal to the metal for a full series. By attempting to raise 40 grand and committing $10,000 of their own money to the project, writer/producer/actor Steve Kasan and his team are nothing if not optimistic. Though the Indiegogo campaign doesn't close until March 22, Out of Time still needs plenty of help, as it has only raised a smidgen of its proposed budget.
