Derek Hough continues his reign as one of the lords of the dance, scoring three nominations for the just-unveiled World Choreography Awards (sister Julianne Hough also makes a showing this year).
His nominations include ABC’s “Step Into…the Movies” special as well as their long-running “Dancing with the Stars,” and also Hough’s work on the music video for Michael Bublé’s “Higher.” However, married choreographers Phillip and Makenzie Chbeeb, also scored three noms each, including one with Hough for the “Higher” video, as well as for the “Zed Ramadan” TV commercial and ABC’s recent “Beauty and The Beast” anniversary special.
Jamal Sims, nominated for three Emmys this year in the choreography categories for his various projects—including Paramount+’s “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies“—garnered two nods, including his work on Netflix’s “13 the Musical” and the live “Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl.”

The first night of the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy Awards is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 3, and we’ll see where the Primetime ceremony could be heading based on the first wave of winners.
With an evening that features categories for animated program, reality host, documentaries and short form, we could get a strong sense of where some of the support lies for the main ceremony on Monday, Sept. 12.
There are significant history-making moments that can take place.
Barack Obama could become the second U.S. president to win an Emmy for outstanding narrator for Netflix’s “Our Great National Parks.” Dwight Eisenhower won in 1956, while still in office when he picked up the Governors Award “for his use and encouragement of television.”
If Obama wins, he’ll be halfway to Egot status after netting two Grammys for best spoken word album for “Dreams from My Father” (2006) and “The Audacity of...

Country music star Jimmie Allen is set to make his feature film debut with upcoming musical “Be Alright.”
“The Goldbergs’” Hayley Orrantia will co-star, with both Allen and Orrantia in the lead roles.
In “Be Alright,” which is set in New York City in the 1960s, Orrantia plays down-on-her-luck Eve. Things start looking up when she encounters an “old friend with a new mantra” played by Allen.
In keeping with Allen’s musical style, the film is set to have a country flavor. Production will kick off this month at the Warner Bros. lot.
As well as starring in “Be Alright” (which shares a title with a track from his recent album “Tulip Drive”), Allen developed the original story and will produce and co-direct the feature alongside Chris Beyrooty.
Beyrooty wrote the screenplay with Connor Martin.

If he wins for “Annie Live!,” choreographer Sergio Trujillo will add an Emmy to his Tony Award. Trujillo wanted to make the classic musical accessible to a younger generation. With brand new dance arrangements and adding his own stamp on the moves, he worked with the cast and ensemble for five weeks, and although he approached it as if prepping for a Broadway show, he says, “I didn’t choreograph this piece to the stage. I choreographed it with the camera [in mind] and that was magical.”

It’s time for the last dance(s) on “Dancing with the Stars” Season 30. The final four couples will face off for the final time on Monday with two routines — and in a twist, one of them is not their favorite dance of the season.
Instead, the remaining four pairs will perform a fusion dance of two styles in addition to their highly anticipated freestyles before a couple is crowned. Three of the four fusions feature the cha-cha, with Amanda Kloots and Alan Bersten the odd ones out. Probably could’ve gotten a bit more variety in there.
See the full list of dances below.
Amanda Kloots and Alan Bersten: Viennese waltz and paso doble fusion (“Never Tear Us Apart” by Bishop Briggs); freestyle (“A Sky Full of Stars” by Coldplay)
Cody Rigsby and Cheryl Burke: paso doble and cha-cha fusion (“Free Your Mind” by En Vogue); freestyle

Derek Hough is one of the most celebrated choreographers in Emmy history, and this year he picked up not one but two more nominations. Can he win again? He has two trophies on his mantel already, and to date no one has ever taken home more than three. Scroll down to watch his nominated routines at the bottom of this post.
One of Hough’s nominations is for a pair of exhibition routines he choreographed for “Dancing with the Stars” last fall: a paso doble to “Uccen” and a tap dance to “Let’s Fall in Love for the Night.” He didn’t compete for the Mirror Ball Trophy this past season, but joined as a full-time judge after British panelist Len Goodman was unable to travel back to the US due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “World of Dance” finally got its foot through the door at the 2019 Emmys. Tessandra Chavez won Best Choreography for the series, besting two contenders for “So You Think You Can Dance” and three other nominees for “World of Dance.” Check out the complete list of Creative Arts winners here.
This was a redemption of sorts for “World of Dance,” but it’s actually familiar territory for Chavez. The series was completely snubbed in 2018, which was surprising for a show with such elaborately staged dance numbers, but it dominated the Choreography race this time around with four nominations.

Karen Forcano and Ricardo Vega, also known as Karen y Ricardo, were eliminated from season two of “World of Dance” in an upset last summer, but now they could get their revenge by winning an Emmy. The Latin cabaret duo were the front-runners to win the show right out of the gate. “Pegate” was their Qualifiers performance, and judges Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough and Ne-Yo were so overwhelmed by it that they leapt out of their seats when it was over. That performance earned them an average score of 99.7 out of 100, which at the time was unprecedented. Then they scored 98.3 for “La Malanga” during the Duels round. Who will win Emmys for Best Reality-Competition Program and Best Reality Host? You can now make your predictions in those two races right here in our predictions center. “Dancing with the Stars” won the hosting award for Tom Bergeron in 2012. But the show has never won the top prize despite 11 nominations. Can it finally win this year? Scroll down to find out what categories and episodes were submitted for the show on this year’s Emmy ballot.
“DWTS” hasn’t won the top award from the television academy, but it’s actually the most awarded reality-competition show in Emmy history with 17 victories. The show has won at least one prize every single year since 2008, including three victories for its choreography. Derek Hough won that award in 2013. Then he won it again with his sister Julianne Hough and Tessandra Chavez in 2015. And in 2017 longtime “DWTS” choreographer Mandy Moore prevailed for the first time.

It’s the co-reigning champion, for choreographer Mandy Moore, along with “So You Think You Can Dance.” As one of the few dance-centric programs on the air, it’s probably good for another nomination this year, but who of the “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” pros would you nominate?

Jenna Johnson was eliminated first in her previous season, so we never got to see what she was made of until now, and she...

If So You Think You Can Dance is lucky enough to be renewed for Season 13, I nominate Vanna White to replace Jason Derulo at the judges’ table.

It makes sense, yo! After all, what more does Pervy McBlankeyes do each week than follow fellow panelists Paula Abdul and Nigel Lythgoe in revealing coded messages — consonant by vowel by consonant by vowel — telling the audience which contestants will be sent to the guillotine (and which ones have been tabbed as the Chosen Ones) by episode’s end?...

“You already know how this will end.” That was the refrain of the song chosen by classically trained Chehon Wespi-Tschopp for his final solo of So You Think You Can Dance Season 9, but it was also fitting commentary on the suspense level most of the show’s fans felt going into this week’s telecast. Surely, there was no way hip-hop animator Cyrus and effervescent ballerina Eliana wouldn’t become the first male/female co-champions in series history, right?
Well, maybe not. Faster than a speeding quickstep and crazier than Mary Murphy describing Stacey Tookey as a “three time Nommy-Emanated” choreographer,...

Ooh, I love Final Four night! The guy-guy and girl-girl numbers are always a blast, and a great chance for a side-by-side comparison before our final votes. Tonight we got a sexy burlesque featuring Tiffany, Eliana, and a great big pole that reminded Nigel Lythgoe of an outing he’d had with Randy Jackson. *Tmi, Nigel.* Meanwhile, Cyrus and Chehon and their seemingly painted-on torsos rippled their way through a difficult Sonya Tayeh routine filled with lifts. Plus: a stunning pas de deux, all-stars Will Wingfield, Allison Holker, and Alex Freaking Wong, and the “Glitch”/”tWitch” snap animation number we...

Oh Katie, how do you book these gigs?
I'm not sure Katie Holmes topped her previous utterly useless appearance on So You Think You Can Dance (The one where she performed a totally out of context pre-taped and lip-synced version of "Get Happy"). But last night on the judges' panel she fell almost equally flat.
I'm sure the woman is very sweet and, as my sister remarked last night, she actually seems to get prettier as she gets older. But what the hell? She just rambled on all night with obsequious and often nonsensical comments like... "I loved it when you jumped up" or "I love your outfits. If everyone could dance the way you can in an outfit, boy, fashion would be even more beautiful."
Not a critical or incisive word to say to anyone - making her endless effusive praise sorta meaningless. Kenny Ortega seemed to fare better as a judge,...

Fox Janette Manrara and Marko Germar on “So You Think You Can Dance”
We’re down to the top four, and the final two shows! The four will dance solos, partner with All-Stars, dance with each other, and have mini-interviews with Cat.
Who will be crowned America’s favorite dancer? Tonight’s your last chance to vote!
Cat’s in a strapless, blingy, sparkly dress, with her hair up and red lipstick. And, for once, even the hemline is very nice.
