"They have a very cinematic approach to anime. They don't want to anything that is generic or cliched, and that's how I feel about my art as well." Netflix's new anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is already available to watch streaming. For one final promotion, Netflix has unveiled a 10 minute behind-the-scenes video taking us to Japan where the animation studio Science Saru is located. Based on the comic books by Canadian creator Bryan Lee O'Malley, the anime is inspired by Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs the World movie but is directly pulled from the comics themselves. They explain this video that the voice cast recorded first, then they animated the series with the voices already in place - the opposite of what usually happens in Japan. This anime series is also quite diverse - it's showrun by Canadian Bryan Lee O'Malley and American BenDavid Grabinski, directed by Spanish animation director Abel Gongora,...

The "Street Fighter"-inspired directive in Bryan O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" comic and its Edgar Wright-directed 2010 movie adaptation is a simple one: 23-year-old Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) must defeat the seven Evil Exes of Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) in order to date her. He kicks all of their butts and does some soul-searching to better himself for Ramona. Loosely inspired by O'Malley's early adulthood, the Toronto-set "Scott Pilgrim" is a superlative tale about starting new relationships after messy breakups and the past romantic ties that haunt you and your new partner. In Scott's world of video game vernacular and shōnen-inspired duels, an ex might try to behead their ex's new beau with a ninja katana.
Almost two decades after the first "Scott Pilgrim" comic, the "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" Netflix anime signifies that O'Malley rethought Ramona's dynamic with her Evil Exes.

Plot: Scott Pilgrim meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, and discovers he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. But this time, things get even more complicated. Based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off revisits and reimagines the beloved cult classic, taking Ramona Flowers, her evil exes, Scott, and his friends off on a mysterious new action-packed journey to find love.
Review: While Edgar Wright may best be known for Shaun of the Dead and the other entries in the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy Baby Driver and Last Night in Soho, his live-action take on Scott Pilgrim vs. The World remains a cult favorite. Despite critical acclaim, the film never achieved much box office success but has grown a fanbase in the thirteen years since its release. "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" is not a remake of the 2010 Edgar Wright movie, or just another adaptation of the Bryan Lee O'Malley comic. Instead, this anime takes the same approach as the "Rebuild of Evangelion" movies, taking everything beloved and great about the source material and remixing it into an original tale that comments on, interrogates, and ultimately improves on the original. This is not the story you knew, and it is better for it.
Like the first of the "Evangelion" movies, "You Are (Not) Alone," the show starts out with an almost shot-for-shot recreation of the first volume of the comic, up until Scott's first fight with one of Ramona's evil exes. Except here, Scott loses the fight and all hell breaks loose. From there, "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" tells an original story that diverges from the original timeline of the story — and there is a very good reason for it.

Even if you’ve read Bryan Lee O’Malley’s seminal Scott Pilgrim Oni Press graphic novel series and even if you’ve seen Edgar Wright’s 2010 live-action Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski’s new Netflix animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off isn’t what you’re expecting it to be.
Because of Netflix’s very restrictive requests regarding what critics can and cannot reveal about Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, I can’t tell you how or why it’s different or what the differences do to the themes of O’Malley’s fantastical story. Heck, I can’t even tell you if there are guest stars, much less who they are or who they play.
Darn.
So to boil it down: Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is probably my third favorite incarnation of this story, and I don’t think the reconfiguration of the story entirely works,...

Editor’s Note: This review contains spoilers.
From its marketing and anime-styled opening credits, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off could be confused for a straightforward adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series, albeit one determined not to step on the toes of Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Many scenes from the Netflix series, particularly in the first episode, are staged almost identically to their equivalents in Wright’s 2010 film, and the entire cast returns to voice their animated counterparts. Once again, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is poised to fight the seven evil exes of his dream girl, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).
By the time the first episode concludes, however, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has firmly announced its intention to go in another direction, as well as clarified the meaning of its title in the process: that Scott Pilgrim is nowhere to be found.

Michael Cera was almost Mr. Aubrey Plaza.
The “Life and Beth” actor revealed to Rolling Stone that he almost tied the knot with “Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World” co-star Aubrey Plaza during production on the 2010 Edgar Wright film.
“We were driving through Vegas,” Cera said. “The idea was to then get a divorce right away, so we could call each other ‘my ex-husband’ and ‘my ex-wife’ at like 20.”
Cera and Plaza ultimately did not wed, with Plaza marrying filmmaker Jeff Baena in 2021 and Cera calling Nadine Cera his spouse since 2017.
However, the duo are reuniting for the upcoming “Scott Pilgrim” animated Netflix series, as announced earlier this year. The rest of the original ensemble cast, including Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Kieran Culkin, Satya Bhabha, Brie Larson, Alison Pill, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Johnny Simmons, Mark Webber, Mae Whitman, and Ellen Wong, are also returning to voice their respective characters.

"Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" remains one of the best video game adjacent movies ever, one that captures the aesthetic and the essence of leveling up and defeating bosses, all while also being, along with "Speed Racer" and "Alita: Battle Angel," one of the best live-action anime movies, even though this one is not based on an anime.
Edgar Wright's second most underrated film (after "The World's End") exudes style, is presented through a very specific lens, and if you get on its wavelength, it results in a phenomenal cartoony experience and a great adaptation of the comic series by Bryan Lee O'Malley. And yet, as well as the film captures the anime aesthetic, there are things that just don't quite work in live-action. It is great news, then, that this story is finally making its way to the medium it was always meant to be told in — anime.
