Netflix has released dozens of sci-fi shows, but not all of them are worth watching. Therefore, Reddit users have collected only the best of the best – those that changed the rules of the genre and surprised with their unexpected plot twists.
1. Altered Carbon, 2018-2020
When acclaimed Hollywood screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis read Richard K. Morgan's cyberpunk novel Altered Carbon, she decided to turn it into a blockbuster. But the story did not fit into an hour and a half hours, so Kalogridis decided to turn the project into a television series for Netflix.
Altered Carbon is about a future world in which people can live forever, moving their consciousness from body to body and creating digital copies in case of sudden death or murder. The richer a person is, the better his immortality is guaranteed and the more often he can change bodies.
2. Dark, 2017-2020
2019, the quiet German town of Winden.

From the tiniest micro-organism to the far reaches of the universe, sci-fi adaptations have made a triumphant splash across multiple streaming platforms. For decades, the collective groans that routinely followed book-to-tv adaptation announcements were a given.
At the same time, many science fiction books are so steeped in lore, character motivations, politics, and scientific complexities that converting prose to a "show but don't tell" format is a tall task.
Star Trek, for instance, has historically been pretty cut and dry with its science. A phaser will vaporize you, and a transporter will, well, transport you.
Now, imagine explaining the three-body problem from a show but don't tell approach.
Thankfully, the rash of exciting new sci-fi adventures solves these riddles with filmmakers and writers who are passionate about the material.

"The Matrix," like all great stories, was built on some great inspirations. Its basal foundations can be daunting, involving some deep dives into Buddhist theology, philosophy, and the development of AI. The Wachowski sisters drew from three non-fiction grimoires, if you'll pardon the term, to build their world of machine and man. "Out of Control," by Kevin Kelly, is a look at the potential of mechanical evolution. "Introducing Evolutionary Psychology" by Dylan Evans shaped the id of Neo's life. And "Simulacra and Simulation" by Jean Baudrillard is a well-known philosophical treatise that birthed Morpheus' "desert of the real."
These are tough books, but they provide terrific insight into the thought process behind the Matrix itself. Readers who would prefer to take the blue pill instead and jaunt through imaginary worlds in search of a similar fix to Neo's journey through ones and zeros toward his personal nirvana will find plenty of science fiction to enjoy,...

Netflix’s news sci-fi series “Altered Carbon” (based on the book of the same name by Richard Morgan) has been compared to “Blade Runner” since before it even premiered. And with good reason: It certainly looks a lot like the classic 1982 neo-noir film. But that’s okay, “Altered Carbon” creator, Laeta Kalogridis, tells TheWrap — the Cyberpunk genre has certain aesthetic requirements that have been baked into it since “Blade Runner” first hit theaters. Though Kalogridis had visions of the Ridley Scott flick starring Harrison Ford (and the book by Philip K. Dick, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” on which...

Netflix seems to be pushing their cyberpunk sci-fi series Altered Carbon hard. Usually they release one or two trailers right before one of their original projects premieres. Today we are getting our third trailer for Altered Carbon and the series isn't being released until February. I guess they want to make sure people know about the show! After all, this is the most expensive series that they've produced. They just want to make sure that it pays off for them.
The show looks freakin' awesome and I'm completely sold. I love what I've seen in the trailers and the concept is intriguing. This trailer offers us more information on the story that the series will tell. Altered Carbon is based on Richard K. Morgan’s 2002 cyberpunk novel, which is set 500 years in the future, and here's a description of the story that was released:

I know we've already seen a great trailer for Netflix's upcoming cyberpunk sci-fi series Altered Carbon, but today we have a new promo spot that you've gotta see! It's a shorter promo but it packs quite a punch! It's filled with a lot of new thrilling and cool new footage that shows you just how crazy and big the scale of this series is going to be.
Altered Carbon is based on Richard K. Morgan’s 2002 novel, which is set 500 years in the future, and here's a description of the story that was released:

Sneak Peek new footage, plus images from the TV series "Altered Carbon", based on the 2002 'cyberpunk' science fiction novel by author Richard K. Morgan, premiering February 2, 2018 on Netflix:
"...in this dystopian world, human personalities are stored digitally and downloaded into new bodies. Most people have cortical stacks in their spinal columns storing their memories.
"If their body dies, their stack can be stored indefinitely. While most people can afford to get 're-sleeved' at the end of their lives, they are unable to update their bodies.
"Only the wealthy are able to acquire replacement bodies on a continual basis. The long-lived are called 'Meths', a reference to the Biblical figure 'Methuselah'. The very rich are also able to keep copies of their minds in remote storage, which they update regularly. This ensures that even if their stack is destroyed, they can be resleeved.
"Then a Meth named 'Bancroft' apparently commits suicide.

We were pretty excited a couple of years ago when Netflix announced they were going ahead with a 10 episode order of "Altered Carbon," an adaptation of Richard K. Morgan's cyberpunk novel - the first in a series of three.
Soon after the announcement that Laeta Kalogridis (best known before this as the co-writer of Shutter Island and Terminator Genisys) would showrun, write and executive produce, it was announced that Joel Kinnaman would star in the series as Takeshi Kovacs, an interstellar warrior who has been imprisoned for 500 years and who is downloaded into a new body.

Based on the classic cyberpunk noir novel by Richard K. Morgan, Altered Carbon is an intriguing story of murder, love, sex, and betrayal, set more than 300 years in the future. Society has been transformed by new technology: consciousness can be digitized; human bodies are interchangeable; death is no longer permanent.
Takeshi Kovacs is the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned, “on ice”, for centuries until Laurens Bancroft, an impossibly wealthy, long-lived man, offers Kovacs the chance to live again. In exchange, Kovacs has to solve a murder… that of Bancroft himself.
Consciousness can be digitized…human bodies are interchangeable…and death is no longer permanent, welcome to the world of Altered Carbon where noBODY lives forever.
Altered Carbon launches on Netflix Friday, February 2nd 2018.

We know that Netflix is working on one of its most expensive projects in the streaming company's history. It's a sci-fi series called Altered Carbon, a 10-episode series based on the bestselling novel by Richard K. Morgan. Up until now, we have not seen any teasers or stills from the production but i09 pointed out recently, that several gifs have been making the rounds on Reddit that look like they’re for the upcoming television adaptation. The images have not been confirmed by Netflix but show various businesses in Bay City circa 2384, matching the location and date that the novel takes place.
Altered Carbon takes place in a distant future where people can transfer their consciousness from body to body, making immortality a reality. Society is divided between people who can afford to live forever and those who can't, creating modern gods who keep themselves above and apart from everyone else.

Having worked with the streamer on both "The Killing" and "House of Cards," actor Joel Kinnaman is returning to Netflix for their ten-episode sci-fi drama series "Altered Carbon" which Skydance TV will produce.
Based on the 2002 novel by Richard Morgan, the story is set in the 25th century and explores what happens when the human mind becomes digitized and the soul is transferable from one body to another.
The series revolves around Takeshi Kovacs, an ex-elite interstellar warrior known as an Envoy (Kinnaman) who has been imprisoned for five centuries and who is downloaded into a future he had tried to stop.

Miguel Sapochnik ("Game of Thrones") has signed on to direct the series premiere while Laeta Kalogridis ("Avatar") will pen the script and serve as showrunner.
