Ice Cube and Kevin Hart rekindle their comic chemistry in Ride Along 2, the sequel to the 2014 action-comedy Ride Along. While the smart cop/bumbling cop movie formula is all too familiar, the humor in this go-round is still centered around Hart and his shenanigans but is enhanced by an unusually diverse supporting cast that includes The Hangover’s Ken Jeong, The View’s Sherri Shepherd and Magic Mike’s Olivia Munn. A few things have changed since we last left the reluctant duo. James (Ice Cube) is still a hardcore detective at his Atlanta precinct and Ben Barber (Hart) … well, Ben … Continue reading →

Dubious police procedures, by-the-numbers buddy-cop-comedy shenanigans, and characters who hate one another, none of which is as fun as it sounds. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): cannot abide Kevin Hart
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
So Kevin Hart is basically the black Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Except he’s supposed to be an actual member of the Atlanta police department here, which is appalling. Ride Along 2 may not be working under the same disgusting premise as the first film — that Ice Cube’s cop is entitled to vet the man his sister is going to marry — but the idea that a clumsy doofus like Hart’s (Get Hard) Ben Barber would be entrusted with the public safety, not to mention a semiautomatic weapon, is a close second. This time, Detective James Payton (Ice Cube: 22 Jump Street) takes along Ben,...

2014’s buddy action-comedy hit Ride Along wasn’t a particularly good film, but it had two things going for it. First, its set-up was solid, if uninspired — tough Atlanta cop Ice Cube drags along mouthy wannabe Kevin Hart, who also happens to be his beloved sister’s boyfriend, on a day of answering police calls, in order to scare him away from both the job and the girl. (The script had been kicking around Hollywood for a decade or so.) Second, it had diminutive, walking dynamo Kevin Hart, whose motormouth antics regularly provide many undeserving films with welcome bursts of energy. Ride Along 2, which picks up not long after the first film ended, doesn’t mess much with the formula, except that everything feels more frayed and tired this time around. Now, Ben Barber (Hart) is an actual police rookie, and his impending nuptials to Angela (Tika Sumpter, given...

Plot: Atlanta cop James Payton and his imminent brother-in-law Ben Barber travel to Miami to bust up a drug ring. Hilarity ensues. Review: Ride Along 2 is such a bummer to sit through. It's hardly even a movie, it's like a commercial for some obnoxious product that it should be ashamed of promoting. I genuinely thought it would be impossible for this sequel to sink lower than the original,... Read More...

“Ride Along 2” cruised to $1.26 Million at the Thursday night previews. Starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, the sequel to 2014’s “Ride Along” is tracking to open a little under $41 million — that’s the same three-day total that the original debuted with in the same Martin Luther King Day weekend slot two years ago. The first movie grossed $1.06 million from Thursday night screenings upon its release. With a budget of $40 million, “Ride Along 2” follows cop Ben Barber (Hart) who heads to Miami with his soon-t0-be brother-in-law James (Ice Cube) — a better cop — to bring...

It made sense that we got the buddy cop film Ride Along (2014) starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart. A film for them to work off such different personalities; they always seemed like a perfect duo. Coming from director Tim Story, who should be most remembered for making one of the few misses in the Marvel Universal with Fantastic Four (2004), Ride Along was such an unoriginal ride that it wasted both Ice Cube and Kevin Hart. Not much has changed in Ride Along 2.
Even with issues in their careers, actors Ice Cube and Kevin Hart are talented. Ice Cube came to fame due to his hip hop group N.W.A in the late 1980s to early 1990s and in his feature film Boyz N the Hood; both things ahead of their time and so accurate on predicting the escalation in police brutality. For someone who started in the music industry,...

If you enjoyed Ride Along, you’ll like Ride Along 2 – it’s as simple as that. Fast-talking stand-up Kevin Hart and gruff straight man Ice Cube bicker like an old couple all the way to the bank as they play off each other’s delivery styles to lively effect, but this weak follow-up to the 2014 hit is basically a series of disposable action sequences loosely connected by the presence of its two stars. What you saw in the predecessor and see in Ride Along 2’s trailers is what you get: plenty of routine action, lots of Kevin Hart sass, and not much else.
Ride Along 2 is pretty much on par with the original in terms of plot. Atlanta cops James Payton (Ice Cube) and his future brother-in-law Ben barber (Hart) travel to Miami, where they team up with a computer hacker (Ken Jeong) and a sexy-but-tough detective...

“Ride Along” was by no means a great movie, but it executed an amiable enough premise, pairing up the stonefaced Ice Cube with the whirligig Kevin Hart, for your standard mismatched buddy movie. The plot was besides the point, and I doubt anyone could recall it in great detail, but the movie was effective in its mild way of generating occasionally humorous sparks between the leads. It was an earnest if not wholly successful movie, that almost reached the admittedly low bar it established for itself. It was also a massive box office hit. Now two years later comes the sequel, “Ride Along 2,” a disappointing followup that beyond proving the initial movie was a fluke, is considerably soured an almost audacious contempt for the audience. Of the four writers who penned the first film, only two return this time, with Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi not willing to mess...

Ben Barber graduates from the police academy and is now a full fledged Atlanta P.D. cop, and wants to make it as a detective. James, Ben’s soon to be brother-in-law, is still annoyed by his tactics. Before Ben is able to marry James’s sister, Angela, their boss Lt. Brooks assigns them to a case in Miami, where they will be working with the Miami Police Department in order to bring down a powerful drug lord named Antonio Pope. The sequel movie stars Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, Ken Jeong, Benjamin Bratt, Olivia Munn, Bruce McGill, and Tika Sumpter. “Ride Along 2″ hits theaters on January 15.

Rookie lawman Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) aspires to become a detective like James Payton (Ice Cube), his future brother-in-law. James reluctantly takes Ben to Miami to follow up on a lead that's connected to a drug ring. The case brings them to a homicide detective and a computer hacker who reveals evidence that implicates a respected businessman. It's now up to James and Ben to prove that charismatic executive Antonio Pope is actually a violent crime lord who rules southern Florida's drug trade.

Ice Cube and Kevin Hart return as the exuberant cop duo, on the track of a villain so boring he had audience members reaching for their smartphones
In director Tim Story’s last collaboration with Kevin Hart, Think Like a Man Too, the diminutive, anarchic comedian brought mayhem and merriment as he ran like a lunatic through the faux-elegant hotels of Las Vegas: the perfect setting for the closest thing we’ve got right now to Jerry Lewis. With Ride Along 2, he’s back with a great straight man in Ice Cube, though detective James Peyton is hardly a Dean Martin smooth crooner.
In 2014’s Ride Along, Ice Cube’s emotionally cold Peyton and Hart’s anarchic-but-well meaning Ben Barber ended up joining forces to take down a ring of baddies. In Ride Along 2, pretty much the exact same thing happens. Unlike the first time, in which Barber...

Are you a fan of Kevin Hart? Does Ice Cube’s cold stare get you all hot and bothered? Do you enjoy shootouts kissed by Miami’s neon glow, while latin dance music plays soundtrack to the chaos? If so, then congratulations – you’re the target demographic for Tim Story’s buddy cop sequel, Ride Along 2!
Story’s second ride is another obvious police comedy that admittedly works better than the original does, but it’s still the same partners-with-attitude tomfoolery we’ve seen before, except this time in Florida – and Olivia Munn co-stars. Otherwise, it’s more Black Hammer references, disapproving glares from Cube, and another heaping helping of Hart’s mile-a-minute intensity, which is hopefully all you’re looking for.

Brothers in blue and soon to be brothers-in law Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) and James Peyton (Jump Street‘s Ice Cube) will return in typically explosive fashion for next year’s action-comedy sequel Ride Along 2, and today Universal has showcased a brand new trailer for the high-octane romp.
Sending the boys on a mission to Miami, the bumbling duo are on the hunt to sabotage a drugs ploy that has resulted in dangerous and illicit product surfacing in their home town. We can just imagine the ‘this time, it’s personal’ slogans adorning the marketing material in the build-up to release.
Remaining true to the formula of the original – it did bag Universal $154 million at the worldwide box office, after all – this new trailer for Ride Along 2 will read like familiar territory for those who have seen Tim Story’s 2014 actioner, which didn’t win a lot of fans in critics circles.

Last year’s Ride Along didn’t exactly establish itself in the annals of great buddy cop comedies, but it did manage to be a big hit with cinema audiences, thanks in part of the comic chemistry of Prime Grump Ice Cube and live-wire Kevin Hart. Naturally, a sequel was commissioned quickly and here’s the first trailer. We catch up with tough cop James Payton (Cube) in the middle of a sting (which appears to be a silly nod to parent studio Universal’s Fast & Furious franchise) when he’s loudly, rudely and slapstickly (not a word, but we’re birthing it) interrupted by security guard-turned-rookie cop Ben Barber (Hart). From there it looks to be a lot of the same, as Ben makes James’ life a living hell by screwing up as they try to take down a crime baron in Miami, all the while preparing for his...

After debuting the maiden poster for the anticipated action-comedy sequel earlier in the week, Universal has completed the one-two punch with today’s full-length trailer for Ride Along 2.
Reuniting the soon to be brothers-in-law Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) and James Peyton (21 Jump Street‘s Ice Cube), the footage sends the bumbling duo on a mission to the sun-kissed streets of Miami, and things get ridiculous in the best possible way. Striking all the chords of your standard buddy cop movie – over-the-top action and internal quarrelling – Ride Along 2 even features a wink and a nudge toward Universal’s Fast and the Furious franchise, replete with a well-timed cameo of its own.
Though the first film will go down as a critical dud, Universal, spurred by a $154 million turnover at the box office, is placing its faith in Hart and Cube once again for the sequel. Action comedies have traditionally...

Though this year’s breakout comedy hit Ride Along was almost entirely the Ice Cube and Kevin Hart show, Universal’s upcoming sequel, Ride Along 2, has been putting together a pretty terrific supporting cast over the past few weeks. First, we heard that 24: Live Another Day actor Benjamin Bratt had come aboard in an unspecified role. Next, Attack of the Show! host and geek goddess Olivia Munn joined the cast, taking on the role of a tough Miami homicide detective who becomes the object of Detective James Payton’s (Cube) affection. Now, we’ve learned that The Hangover and Community star Ken Jeong has hitched a ride on the comedy sequel.
Jeong will play “a cocky computer hacker who fancies himself a ladies man but is also important in solving the case that Cube and Hart are working on.” The part is described as similar to Joe Pesci...

Whatever happened to the buddy comedy? We're now 30 years removed (or near enough) from '80s classics such as Lethal Weapon, 48 Hrs and Midnight Run, and nobody's really managed to get close to those action-comedies in the decades since.
Ride Along, the genre's latest offering, could sure do with some of the tack-sharp writing and punchy character work from the likes of Shane Black and Walter Hill. Though it's sporadically amusing - thanks in main to a motor-mouthed turn from comic Kevin Hart - it's not really a patch on any if its livewire predecessors. At best it's in line with the ropey Rush Hour sequels.

Ice Cube plays a cop forced to take a dopey security guard for work experience in this underwhelming caper
Romantic chemistry is rare in the movies, comic chemistry rarer still, and sadly there isn't much on offer in this action buddy comedy. Ice Cube is James Payton, a tough Atlanta cop who is forced to take dopey security guard Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) for a "ride along" one day, a work-experience thing forced on him because Ben yearns to join the police and is dating James's hot sister Angela (Tika Sumpter) who thinks it would be nice for them to bond. Inevitably, James is infuriated by Ben's goofy over-excitability and incompetence, but then the odd couple get into a scary situation – and maybe Ben could be a hero after all. The movie gets off to a flyer with a boisterous action sequence at the beginning, but then we settle into something very average.

Though certainly a flawed piece, you can certainly see why this production has proved to be such a popular hit, with an unrelenting, scattergun approach to jokes. With it’s tongue firmly in its cheek, it certainly makes for an entertaining trip to the cinema.
When the calamitous, aspiring police man Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) decides he wants to propose to his long-term girlfriend Angela (Tika Sumpter), he knows that he has to be given her older brother’ James Payton’s (Ice Cube) blessing first. The problem is, the bullish, imposing cop James, has very little time for his sister’s partner. Allowing him the chance to...

The original film doesn’t hit our shores until the end of this month, but given its big box office success in the Us and the current drawing power of star Kevin Hart, it’s perhaps less than surprising that Universal wants to capitalise on cop comedy Ride Along by officially kicking off work on a sequel.Though the reviews were mixed, that’s not stopping many of those involved in the first film reuniting, with director Tim Story and two of the four writers, Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, all signed to deals alongside producers Ice Cube and Will Packer. In front of the camera, Cube and Hart (or their representatives, at least) are hammering out the final details of contracts to return for a second round of growling and gurning. The first Ride Along found Hart as jumpy security guard Ben Barber, who is angling to marry his...

Peter Travers finds himself in a peculiar position on At the Movies this week as he highlights Ride Along, a predictable, one-star cop comedy that would otherwise be headed straight for the scum bucket if it weren't for a stellar performance from Kevin Hart.

New 'Ride Along' movie delivered great comedy, action & more. Universal Pictures released their new comedy flick, "Ride Along" into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out, and thought it was freaking hilarious, featuring extreme funny man, Kevin Hart, along with rapping badass turned actor, Ice Cube. It also delivered big on the action as well. It stars: Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, John Leguizamo, Bruce McGill, Tika Sumpter, Bryan Callen, and Laurence Fishburne. In the new flick, character Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) wants to prove to cop, James Payton (Ice Cube), that he can take care of his sister Angela Payton (Tika Sumpter) . Ben has enrolled in the police Academy and believes he has what it takes to be a cop as well, so James decides to put him to the test by giving him a "ride along" for a day in the field. James secretly sets up some fake scenarios,...

Ride Along challenges Kevin Hart, who plays a security guard newly accepted for police academy training, to impress Ice Cube's James Payton, a hardcore undercover Atlanta police officer who wants to stop his sister from marrying Hart's Ben Barber. Also starring Tika Sumpter, John Leguizamo and Bryan Callen and directed by Tim Story, the attempted comic riff on Training Day has a sequel in the works. Ride Along opened to a solid $1.1 million Thursday night, and is predicted by observers to outperform the actual action film opening this holiday weekend: Kenneth Branaugh's Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, starring Chris

Let's get one thing out of the way first, Kevin Hart is hilarious. Even in a toned down, third-rate, PG-13 buddy comedy like Ride Along he's hilarious. However, when I see it took four people -- Greg Coolidge, Jason Mantzoukas, Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi -- to write a screenplay that could just as easily be outlined on a napkin before handed over to Hart while telling him to improvise the rest frustrates me. Of that lot only Mantazoukas has anything respectable to his credit while Hay and Manfredi have brought us the likes of R.I.P.D., Clash of the Titans and Aeon Flux. Suffice to say, without Hart, Ride Along would have been unwatchable. In the opening minutes we meet Ice Cube as hard-boiled detective James Payton, working undercover, attempting to learn the identity of some anonymous villain named Omar. Things go bad, the bad guys find out he's a...

Much like the dreary, bitter weather that turns January into a desolate tundra, new releases that appear during this month also typically experience that same deep freeze in terms of quality. Coming off a December awards season push, studios dump lesser movies in hopes that the lack of competition will let cinematic duds score big at the box office because there’s simply nothing else to see. Don’t believe me? I just watched The Legend Of Hercules. Well, not so much “watched” as “sat through an agonizingly embarrassing film that defines what a bad 3D conversion looks like.” January brings a bit of a cinematic Ice Age, and our latest victim is none other than the film I’m here to review, Ride Along.
In this stereotypical buddy comedy, we meet Ben Barber (Kevin Hart), a lowly security guard who learns that his dream of joining the police academy just came true.

Kevin Hart and Ice Cube take on a bad cop-wannabe scenario in Tim Story's Ride Along, which turns out to be something like a comic riff on Training Day. Leaning more toward Hart's brand of slightly raunchy humor rather than Ice Cube's equally popular family-friendly fare, the PG-13 film exhibits broad appeal, backed by a wide-ranging marketing campaign. With an opening timed for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend and lacking any similar action-comedy competition, the release could score big for Universal in major markets. Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) is a video game-obsessed

“This ain’t the prom limo, they going to jail,” Ice Cube’s James Payton tells Kevin Hart’s Ben Barber. Well, you could have fooled Best Week Ever’s Michelle Buteau and Girl Code’s Carly Aquilino as they partied it up in the back of the Ride Along squad car. Strangely, this is not an actual scene from the movie, which opens in theaters this Friday, January 17. If you ask us, these ladies should have cameos in All of the movies. But enjoy their brief moment of cinematic history right here, then head over to the VH1 Tumblr for behind-the-scenes photos of the girls’ high jinks on the set.
