ReviewDespite the flaws in the script, I hope viewers will take home a deeper understanding of the justice system and that other filmmakers will attempt to emulate Shan’s sensitivity while making movies on systemic violence.TrailerScreengrab Written by Bharathy Singaravel What a relief to see Yogi Babu in a role that doesn’t make a comic element of him, but instead, gives him space to portray a flawed and deeply human character. Bommai Nayagi, by debutant director Shan, attempts to speak about child sexual assault, and how it is interlinked with caste, class, and access to justice. Yogi Babu as Velu, a labourer in a small tea shop, who is the father of nine-year-old Bommai (Sreemathi), brings to life the world-weariness of a man who knows that the system is stacked against people like him. Survival is his priority. To that effect, he thinks that if he keeps his head down,...

Film CommentaryDhammam is part of SonyLiv’s anthology series Victim, who’s Next? featuring four short films.Bharathy SingaravelSpoiler alert: This article is not a review and discusses some scenes in detail. The scene opens to a Buddha half buried in the mud. A girl, possibly no more than ten-years-old, sits astride the idol’s shoulders. She tries to stand up, teetering on the edge, a gleeful smile on her lips as she spreads out her arms like wings. At this exact moment, her father working in a field nearby, breaks the spell. Shouting at her for her “irreverence” he drags the little girl off the statue, much to her annoyance. “You never let me fly! Hasn’t the Buddha himself said ‘there is no god?!” she demands. The father grumbles to himself about his ‘out-of-control’ daughter. The girl, miffed, but unrepentant, goes off to play in the mud chasing fish.

MollywoodSam Cs’s debut in music industry was with the Tamil film 'Kadalai' a couple of years ago.Digital NativeDigital NativeMusic composer Sam Cs has been roped in to wield the music baton for Odiyan. Going by the reports from sources close to the film unit, he has used a six-foot-long bamboo music instrument to compose the background score of the film. On using the special instrument for the Bgm, he is reported to have told, “It’s a thriller set against the backdrop of a particular time-period. This gave me an instant idea to utilise the ancient ethnic musical instruments of Kerala. The bamboo instrument is played to cast a spell on the audience, and we were able to find only one old lady, who knows how to play it. Somehow we roped her in.” Sam Cs’s debut was with the Tamil film Kadalai a couple of years ago and he went to compose music for films such as Puriyatha Puthir, and Vikram Vedha. MollywoodMammootty, Mohanlal, Nivin Pauly, Tovino Thomas and other stars will be appearing in these exciting films.Neelima MenonHistories and myths are getting retold as each day passes. It is only natural that these retellings find their way to the big screen. Excavated from these stories, are mythical and real superheroes of some sort. We have no way to assess their accuracy, but here’s the top 6 that we’re looking forward to in Malayalam cinema. Odiyan History In ancient Valluvanad, Odiyans, who hailed from Panar, Pulayar and Choklear communities were considered professional assassins, hired by Nairs to kill members of the rival families. Being an agrarian society, most of the rivalries centered around land disputes. The Odiyans were known for their physical agility and worshiped tribal deities. It was believed that they were also into black magic. According to folklore, the Odiyans applied an oil obtained from a slain human fetus on their ear, which gave them powers to assume forms that they desired. The stories say that they never actually changed into the forms or object they intended to be but created a sensory illusion on their prey. Odiyans would assume the shape of a bull or a cat or even a rock, lie on the route that the victim routinely used at night and prey on them. On screen Directed by ad filmmaker Va Shrikumar Menon, Mohanlal plays the last surviving Odiyan in the state. Made on a huge budget, Manju Warrier and Prakash Raj are also part of the cast. This thriller is scripted by Harikrishnan who won the National Award for his script for Kutty Srank. The film reportedly covers a 50-year period in a village in Palghat, Kerala, from 1950 to 2000. Increasing electrification and lighting slowly drives the Odiyans to death. The shooting is set to begin in July. Their first look motion poster featuring a much slimmer Mohanlal in the garb of Odiyan has already grabbed eyeballs for all the right and wrong reasons. Kunjali Marakkar IV History Kunjali III was succeeded by his nephew, the 40-year-old Mohammed Marakkar or Kunjali IV. There has been many a skirmish between his forces and the Portuguese—some won by the Portuguese, some by Kunjali’s forces now called Malabar pirates or Malabar Corsairs. The Portuguese-Calicut treaty came into force in 1582-1587 and in 1585, a new factory was constructed in Ponnani. It was here that the estrangement between the Zamorin and the Kunjali IV started. Finally, he was beheaded by the Portuguese. On screen Santosh Sivan will direct Mammootty in the biopic film on Kunjali Marakkar. Scripted by Shankar Ramakrishnan and Tp Rajeevan, the mega star will be essaying the role of Muhammed Marakkar—the 4th Kunjali Marakkar and the final naval chieftain of the Zamorin Naval Commander. August Cinemas will be producing this venture. Randamoozham History This Mt Vasudevan Nair novel is a retelling of the Indian epic Mahabharata from the perspective of Bheema, the second Pandava. The story deviates from the traditional Mahabharata story as it avoids the divine elements of the ancient epic and represents the characters and events realistically. On screen Mohanlal will play Bheema on screen. A UAE-based Indian businessman will be producing the film, which will be India’s biggest ever motion picture. Directed by Va Shrikumar Menon, it will be produced in two parts and is scheduled to go on the floors by September 2018 for a release in early 2020. The second part will be released within 90 days of the first. The film will be shot primarily in English, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu and will be dubbed into major Indian languages and leading foreign languages. Randamoozham will also witness the coming together of various top-notch actors from Indian and global cinema. Kayamkulam Kochunni History The famous highwayman who lived in 19th century at Kayamkulam in Central Kerala, is said to have robbed from the rich and given to the poor. It was his impoverished childhood that resulted in an aversion to misers, moneylenders and landlords. He was betrayed by a friend and later died in jail. Ithikkara Pakki is one of his closest friends. On screen Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, written by Bobby-Sanjay, Nivin Pauly plays Kayamkulam Kochunni. Mohanlal plays Ithikkara Pakki in the film. Chengazhi Nambiar History Puthumana Panicker or Chengazhi Nambiar along with Chandroth Panicker were those who were part of Mamaamkam in Ad 1505. On screen Tovino Thomas plays Chengazhi in this multi-lingual historical drama. The film, directed and written by Sidhil Subramanian, is made with a budget of 100 Crores and will be released in different languages. Chaaver Warrior (Mamangam) History Mamangam is a medieval festival that was celebrated every 12 years from 800 Ad to 1755 Ad. It's the tale of the brave warriors of Malabar. During the Mamangam festival held on the banks of Bharathapuzha in Thirunavaya, soldiers from all over the country used to come together to wage battles and combat. On screen This movie is about a brave leader and his loyal soldiers who were part of a Mamangam. Mammootty will be essaying the leader and the shooting has already begun in Mangalore. MollywoodThis film about an oddball pair makes us look beyond their eccentricities and see them as regular people.Sowmya RajendranShyamaprasad's Hey Jude is a sweet romance between a man who cannot understand emotions and a woman who swings between the extremes of them. I dread going for films where the characters are described as "oddball" because many a time, the filmmaker gets so carried away with establishing the "weirdness" that that's all the story becomes about. But that's why I liked Hey Jude – it isn't interested in turning the characters' oddities as a crutch, it makes us look beyond the eccentricities, to see them as regular people. Nivin Pauly plays Jude, a young man with a neurological condition (if you're a Lisbeth Salander fan, you'd make the diagnosis within minutes) that makes him...well, strange. He's very particular about the crispiness of his dosa, just how much his bread must be toasted and hugs a giant Nemo stuffed toy when he's upset. We've seen Fahadh Faasil play a role similar to this in North 24 Kaatham and comparisons are inevitable. However, the two films are different in what they want to achieve. While Fahadh's Harikrishnan goes on a journey that helps him loosen up so as to speak, Jude's "journey" is about accepting that he's different and most importantly, getting the people around him to acknowledge this. Jude is a sea away from the swashbuckling characters Nivin has played in the past (kudos to the make-up artist and stylist). As the overweight, vulnerable Jude who is stymied by the world around him, the actor manages to amuse us while drawing empathy. He's the sort of guy who mentally calculates the Bmi of a woman and declares, "Yes, you're fat", when she's asking him the dreaded, "Do you think I'm fat?" question. Trisha, as Crystal, comes as a revelation. Here's an actor who's mostly done "mass" mainstream films where she's been relegated to dancing with the hero. The few opportunities she has had to break away from formula films, she has delivered. But never has she been as convincing as she is in Hey Jude. Crystal, at first glance, appears to be one of those angelic women characters who emotionally rescue the damaged man, but there's more to her. It took me a while to get used to her new voice (dubbing by Sayanora Philip) but once that's settled, Trisha pulls off a very believable and likable Crystal. The bond between Jude and Crystal veers from little adorable moments to darker inner struggles – the staging of these scenes is done organically, without losing the lightness in tone (and the tone is unexpected in a Shyamaprasad film). The scene when Crystal tells Jude that he has nice eyes, for instance, has both actors at the top of their game. The shy blush that spreads on Jude's face and the bemused expression that Crystal wears can put a smile on the most cynical of us. The supporting cast – Siddique, Neena Kurup, Vijay Menon – is excellent. Vijay Menon as Dr Sebastian, especially, is a joy to watch. The battles between Siddique, who plays Jude's money-minded father, and his son, are hilarious. The former characterises all mental health issues as either "vattu" (madness) or "madi" (laziness) – so typical of Indian parents – and yet, the director manages to make us understand him without giving us an unrealistic change of heart. Aju Varghese appears in a lone scene and manages to make us howl with laughter. Much of the film is set in Goa. The languid pace in which the plot progresses might bother some but as a regular on Goa's sublime beaches, I liked the unhurried way in which Shyamaprasad tells his little story. Girish Gangadharan's camera captures Goa, the long stretches of the coast and the city, and turns the place into a quiet character in the film. When Jude enters and leaves Goa, or is exploring the city, the camera zooms out and shows us a panoramic view, breaking the narrative into episodes and plotting Jude's personal growth. There's a lot of music and singing in Hey Jude. The title itself comes from a Beatles song and the cafe Crystal runs, called 'The Beatles' cafe, has a band which plays songs regularly. The music, however, blends in and doesn't come in the way of getting on with the story. Hey Jude is a pleasant, well-told story that brings us closer to understanding differences, across the universe, without the tone ever turning preachy. What's not to like? MollywoodBoth the actors will be seen in multiple get-ups in the film.Digital NativeDigital NativeIt has already been well publicized that Mohanlal will be appearing in various get-ups in Odiyan. The star had worked on his physique and had reduced around 15 kgs of weight to look young for a particular get-up in the film. And now we hear that his co-star in the film, Prakash Raj will also be seen in multiple get-ups. Twenty years after the Tamil political drama Iruvar hit the screens, the film's lead actors Mohanlal and Prakash Raj are teaming up again. The director of the film, Va Shrikumar Menon has confirmed this. On Manju Warrier’s role in Odiyan, director Va Shrikumar Menon is reported to have told to the Times of India that it will be a powerful role played by any woman artiste in the Malayalam film industry. He went on to add, “It’s definitely one of the finest roles she has played. She has had a stellar career, but the role that stands out is that in Aaram Thampuram, because she was pitted against Mohanlal. In her comeback movies, apart from Ennum Eppozhum, most of her roles were solo heroine movies. I believe actors excel in their roles when they share screen space with other brilliant performers. In Odiyan, she is pitted against two of India's finest actors - Mohanlal and Prakash Raj.” The makers have also roped in Peter Hein for choreographing the action scenes in the movie. Sabu Cyril will be the production designer for Odiyan, which is scripted by National Award winner Harikrishnan. The film is been shot in Palakkad, Coimbatore, Pollachi, Hyderabad, and Varanasi. Produced by Anthony Perumbavoor under his banner Aashirvad Cinemas, the film is made on a huge budget and it will be distributed by Maxlab Cinemas and Entertainments. The star cast also includes Siddique, Innocent, Narain, Kailash, Sana Althaf, Appani Sarath and Nandhu. M Jeyachandran has composed the soundtrack and Cs Sam is scoring the Bgm for this flick. Shaji Kumar is wielding the camera for this venture with Johnkutty editing it.
