Established in 1932, Japan’s Toho Group has grown into a film-industry powerhouse, not only at home but globally. Working across production, distribution and exhibition, it has recently been on an expansion spree, reeling in box office around the world and with recognition from major awards bodies.
Long synonymous with Godzilla, which it launched in 1954, Toho this year broke out in another way, as its phenom Godzilla Minus One went on to win the VFX Oscar, a first for the Kaiju, or “strange beast,” monster genre.
Indicative of the company’s status, Toho president and CEO Hiro Matsuoka, gave an opening-day address at CinemaCon in April. Deadline spoke with Matsuoka about the company’s outlook and strategy for the years ahead.
Deadline: Toho has increased its international activity — has this been part of an overall strategy?

Hiro Matsuoka: Yes, overseas opportunities have been part of our long-term growth strategy.

It could be said that shonen anime is typified by its heroes. Whether it’s Yuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen ; Jotaro Kujo from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure ; or the icon himself, Goku of Dragon Ball fame, their exploits have become indelibly linked to the medium. Not every hero is born great, but often we will at least meet them at a stage of their life when they have hidden potential. Take My Hero Academia ’s Izuku Midoriya, for example, whose enthusiasm and passion belies a frail body bereft of natural talent. Related: Recap: Kaiju No. 8 Episode 5, "Joining Up!" If you haven’t noticed, there’s a consistent theme here. All of the abovementioned protagonists are young, ambitious and have their whole lives ahead of them when their adventures begin in earnest. I adore each of them, but I can’t see myself entirely reflected in them, because I am not young,...

Ultraman has been fighting kaiju for more than 50 years, but you’ve never seen him like this. The Japanese hero is coming to Netflix in a new animated film, Ultraman: Rising, and you won’t believe who he’s bringing along.
After decades of Ultramanappearances, beginning with the original 1966 television series created by Eiji Tsuburaya and Tetsuo Kinjo, the film introduces an all-new Ultraman: baseball star Ken Sato. In the new trailer for Ultraman: Rising, which you can watch above, you’ll get a glimpse at one of the challenges Sato faces: a baby kaiju, who imprints on Ultraman and turns his world upside down.
For director Shannon Tindle (creator of Lost Ollie), everything about Ultraman: Rising sprung from this initial concept. “What if I took a character who doesn’t want to be Ultraman, who kind of messes up his job on one of his early outings and...

In April 2024, Naoya Matsumoto’s Kaiju No. 8 anime series hit the screens, and for the first time in years, fans believed that they might have found something unique. The series was quite different from a basic Shonen series as it did not follow the stereotypical anime tropes and introduced a new angle with the help of its protagonist, Kafka Hibino.
Kafka Hibino – Kaiju No. 8
Kafka defied every rule that is followed by a main character in a Shonen series, and this was a good thing as it made fans believe that Kaiju No. 8 might be on to something. However, as the story progressed, it went the same route as every other Shonen anime series, and Kafka’s unique traits went to waste.
When it became noticeable in the series, fans pointed it out and shared their opinions about the wasted potential of Kafka Hibino and how one of...

When Kaiju No. 8 debuted in April 2024, fans had a lot of expectations from the series, as the series was already successful in the manga industry. Eventually, the anime series lived up to its expectations and became one of the best action anime series of the current year. However, Kaiju No. 8 brought with it a new twist, which is not often seen in the anime world.
Kafka – Kaiju No. 8
The twist was introduced through the protagonist of the series, Kafka Hibino. Kafka was a cleaner for Monster Sweeper Inc., but he always wanted to join the Defense Force to eradicate the Kaiju, or “monsters,” that have infested the world and are wreaking havoc. But later on, he himself becomes a Kaiju, and the story becomes more and more interesting.
The twist that Kafka brought with him was that he defied the physical stereotypes of the Shonen main character.

To the uninitiated, the "Halloween" franchise is just a slasher series. If you've seen one, you've seen them all. A masked maniac with a big knife wandering around different settings, cutting down anyone unfortunate enough to get in their way. Sure, while that might be true for John Carpenter's classic original, the series would grow increasingly odd and incredulous as the years went on.
As of this writing, there are four different "Halloween" timelines featuring Michael Myers. It starts with the original timeline, including the orignal "Halloween" from 1978, its sequel "Halloween II," the legacy sequel "Halloween H20," and "Halloween: Resurrection." Then, of course, is the colloquial Cult of Thorn timeline, which also includes those first two movies, followed by then "Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers," "Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers," and "Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers.

Kaiju No. 8’s anime debut has been one many fans have been waiting for ever since it was first announced. So much so that of the season, it was perhaps the most anticipated of them all. Having the contributions of Western music merged with a classic story, Naoya Matsumoto’s tale had a lot to look forward to.

Following a tale perhaps told many times with a twist that makes all the difference, Kaiju No. 8 is both a successful manga and now an anime. If anime-only fans wish to indulge more in that world, the manga is always open for them. However, that is not all.
