In many traditions (as for a long time in the UK), acting is closely associated with sex work. This isn’t just because of the notion of people being on display. At a more fundamental level, it’s about the way that workers in both professions make their bodies available for the performance of other people’s fantasies. Tiago Teixeira’s Custom, which screened as part of Glasgow Frightfest 2024, follows a couple who merge the two. Unable to fund themselves purely through their art, Harriet (Abigail Hardingham) and Jasper (Rowan Polonski) have turned their creative talents to making pornographic videos on a custom basis, doing whatever the client wants. Mostly that’s a bit of mild, stage-managed bdsm, but they are about to get an unusual request that will change everything.
In the internet age, the long-cherished Western notion that body and mind are separate domains is coming under increasing pressure.

Jasper and Harriet are arthouse pornographers struggling to make ends meet. Their stock in trade is producing custom-made erotic films for an exclusive clientele into the forbidden, the shocking and the strange. As they hit rock bottom, that’s when they encounter ‘The Audience’, a mysterious client offering life-changing money to perform strange rituals on videotape.
Custom is a deep dive into the world of online sex work – the custom of the title referring to video requests from paying clients, willing fork over money to have their sexual fantasies played out on camera, in a film that tries So hard to be a Lynchian nightmare.
This is a very timely film And subject matter given the explosion of sites like Onlyfans and Fansly and how people are making a living from them outside of the traditional 9 to 5 workday narrative.

As anyone who has ever attended a Frightfest event will tell you, the UK’s horror filmmaking scene is a close-knit community. One is always hearing about hew films on the grapevine, and it’s a delight when they live up to their promise. I first heard about Custom a few months ago when talking with Andy Edwards about his film Punch. He’s a producer on this one, and was keen to introduce me to first time feature director Tiago Teixeira.
The film follows young couple Harriet (Abigail Hardingham) and Jasper (Rowan Polonski), who finance their artistic work by making custom porn videos. It’s all well and good until they are approached by a client who has some unusual requests, leading them into a world which has more to do with ritual magic than simple sexual fantasy, and which leads them into unexpected places. It would eventually screen as.

There’re countless moments throughout Tiago Teixeira’s feature debut Custom that play like Barker, Nakata or early Cronenberg. Haunting, sexy, deeply disturbing stuff. Icky, sticky seediness, grained-up and stamped onto videotape, like The Ring made for OnlyFans. Deeply dour, but in a good way.
A micro-budget stab at tackling the nefarious underbelly of online sex work, Custom is – much like Teixeira’s shorts (FrightFest alums Dog Skin and Molar in particular) – a mood piece; more interested and involved with its world and themes than its characters. Although it must be said that leads Abigail Hardingham (Nina Forever) and Rowan Polonski (Kingsman) get thoroughly stuck in as artsy couple Harriet and Jasper; amateur pornographers who find themselves tangled up in a bizarre, VHS-themed nightmare, courtesy of their newest client.
But that’s just about all the plot we get. Teixeira instead using much of the mystery as more of a...

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers from Season 1 of “The Innocents,” including the finale.]
“The Innocents,” Netflix’s British/Norwegian series that puts a supernatural twist on the star-crossed romance, concluded on quite the cliffhanger. After eight episodes in which young lovers June (Sorcha Groundsell) and Harry (Percelle Ascott) ran away from home only to discover she’s a shapeshifter, their adventures came to a violent, disastrous end.
In the action-packed episode, after secrets are revealed and sacrifices are made, two people end up dead, one person is in police custody, two people are rendered comatose, and June is mortally wounded. IndieWire spoke to the cast and crew of the series about the finale and whether or not Season 2 is in the cards. While creators Hania Elkington and Simon Duric couldn’t confirm the series will continue, their caginess was perhaps the best indicator that a second season seems likely.

Dramas focusing on a kidnapping — especially of young children — typically follow a simple trajectory: The family is introduced. The child is taken. The family is torn apart. A detective saves the day (or, at least, finds answers), and a happy ending or haunting lesson is imparted to the audience.
Typically, there’s a guessing game involved, as a number of suspicious supporting characters pop up throughout the story, and the audience is invited to solve the mystery. Their reward is being right or being surprised, but what typically elevates some kidnapping dramas above the rest is what elevates any drama: formal elements — directing, writing, acting — that build upon an audience’s immediate empathy for the taken child and the tormented family.

Nina Forever: Relationships are complicated, and even when you think you’ve moved on past a former lover, you still carry traces of that person’s influence with you for a while. That’s the theme at the heart of Nina Forever, the darkly comedic feature film debut from Ben and Chris Blaine that follows new couple Holly (Abigail Hardingham) and Rob (Cian Barry) as they contend with the return of Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), Rob’s former girlfriend who was killed during a car accident and decides to pop up during their first time having sex. And that’s only the beginning of the awkwardness that continues to build between the trio throughout Nina Forever.

Modern romance in Nina Forever
True love never dies, so they say, and this is something that has charmed romantics and worried horror writers for hundreds of years. It doesn’t deter Holly (Abigail Hardingham), who really fancies Rob (Cian Barry) and figures she can handle the fact that he’s recently bereaved. But dead girlfriend Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy) still wants him for herself and isn’t about to give up easily.
An incisive look at some of the less talked-about aspects of human sexuality, Nina Forever is the first full length feature made for a cinema audience by brothers Chris and Ben Blaine, and it has won them well deserved attention. Fresh off the festival circuit, they agreed to talk to us about the film, enthusiastic about a review they said have given them a real boost early on. They were just glad, Chris tells me, that “somebody got it.

I love a heartwarming, feel-good romance story just as much as the next person, but sometimes, it’s those doomed cinematic relationships that tend to stick with you the most. One of the more interesting ill-fated couples I recently encountered was Rob (Cian Barry) and Holly (Abigail Hardingham) from Nina Forever. The new couple must endure the looming presence of Rob’s ex-girlfriend, Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), who died recently in a car accident and happens to show up anytime they become intimate.
The pitch-black comedy touches on a lot of the complications that come with modern relationships and all the proverbial baggage we endure as a result of our previous romantic entanglements. It really struck me throughout the story just how well directors Ben and Chris Blaine perfectly explore those themes in Nina Forever, making me realize that some of my very favorite movie love affairs, particularly from the 1980s,...

Rob (Cian Berry) is a grocery store clerk who recently tried to kill himself after not being able to cope with the depression brought on by the sudden, tragic death of his girlfriend Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy). Holly (Abigail Hardingham) is Rob’s co-worker, who has a morbid fascination with pain and death, so obviously she’s immediately smitten with Rob. This is the perfect pairing, at least for now, since Rob is in desperate need of a romantic connection in his life so he can at least attempt to get over Nina’s death, and Holly needs to be in an edgy relationship after her ex dumped her for being too "vanilla." The sex that bookends their date seems to go spectacularly well. Sparks fly as the two young lovers copulate with abundant mutual attraction and chemistry. Suddenly, the sheets are covered with blood, a pair of gory hands emerges out of the bed,...

This sexy indie fairytale doesn’t overdo the ghoulishness – more Buffy than gory – as it explores the emotional and physical sides of a love affair with a difference
Every young couple thinks their initial intimate encounters are a rebellious and subversive act. For Holly (Abigail Hardingham) and Rob (Cian Barry), they actually have a strong case. When the lights dim and things get hot and heavy, the bloody, broken-boned corpse of Rob’s dead girlfriend Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy) emerges from the bedsheets to join them in a love triangle from beyond the grave. The punchline: Nina Forever, while it has a few laughs, is not a comedy.
Holly, a 19-year-old studying to become a paramedic, meets Rob, a bit older, at the suburban British supermarket where they work. She’s had his eye on him since she heard he tried to kill himself when Nina died in a car accident.

Read: SXSW Review: Fresh, Original, & Surprisingly Tender Horror 'Nina Forever' Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and that usually means rose-colored decorations, flowers, chocolates and the unoriginal rom-com. But "Nina Forever" isn't your ordinary rom-com. Instead of rosy hues and light, charming dialogue, "Nina Forever" plunges you into the depths of depression and horror, accenting the misery with squishy viscera and an off-kilter atmosphere. The award-winning movie stars Abigail Hardingham and Cian Barry as Holly and Rob, a burgeoning workplace couple beginning to find stability and purpose in their droll lives. Rob has recently lost his ex-girlfriend, Nina, in a tragic motorcycle accident, which leaves him as a shadow of his former self. But Holly is determined to make this new, budding relationship work and goes out of her way to help the troubled young man through his grief. But just as their relationship finds footing, Nina.

This review originally ran as part of our coverage of SXSW 2015. It is being reposted as the film opens theatrically this Friday.
In the realm of cockblocks, there’s nothing more intrusive than a vengeful ex-girlfriend who wants to sabotage every future relationship you attempt without her.
Wait, let me rephrase that. In the Realistic realm of cockblocks, that’d be the absolute worst – but Nina Forever doesn’t care to explore our human world. No, according to the Blaine brothers, the absolute Worst cockblock known to man comes in the form of your dead ex-girlfriend who only appears during passionate lovemaking sessions with other woman. This is the lustful tale of Nina Forever, a morbid fable about letting go and moving on – even if the past comes back from the grave.
Holly (Abigail Hardingham) is in love with Rob (Cian Barry), and Rob is in love with Holly. This all seems healthy and promising,...

Greek helmer Yorgos Lanthimos’ purest and painful reminder that love reigns is measuring off against Justin Kurzel’s paranoia bliss and Andrew Haigh’s in it for the long term portrait received the most nominations for the upcoming 2015 British Independent Film Awards. Mysteriously, Rachel Weisz failed to nab a nom in the Best Actress category, but The Lobster has a wide-spread reach in all major categories with seven nominations. 45 Years, the favorite in both acting categories and Macbeth are one shy with six noms apiece. Apart from the Best Picture category, we’re keeping tabs for a surprise win in the Best Screenplay and the Best Supporting Actor race should be a hoot as both Gleesons in Brendan and Domhnall will be competing against each other. The award show technically kicks off award season on December 6th.

While we’ll be hearing about the Oscar race ad nauseam for the next many months, there are a few awards ceremony that actually highlight films that might slip under the radar. Like the recently unveiled Gotham award nominations, the British Independent Film Awards do a splendid job of taking a look at some of the year’s overlooked films, and today brings their nominations.
Topping the list is Yorgos Lanthimos‘ The Lobster (which we quite liked at Cannes, and will be released next spring in the U.S.), earning seven nominations, including Best Film and Director. Also in the same major categories, but earning six overall, were 45 Years and Macbeth, which we also praised, and will arrive in the U.S next month. Notably, the documentary Amy snuck into the Best Film category, proving just how much a hit it was in the U.K. as well.
