Sydney, Aug 3 (Ians) Former Australia cricketer Ian Chappell believes captains were partly to blame for the lack of leg-spin options in the current Test team, saying skippers are yet to understand how wrist-spin bowling works in the longest format of the game.
In the last 10 years, off-spinner Nathan Lyon has led Australia’s spin attack in Tests. But his series-ending calf injury during the second Ashes Test meant Australia had to use young off-spinner Todd Murphy in two of the remaining three games. It deprived Australia of control from the other end as England came back from 2-0 down to end the series at 2-2.
Ever since Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill retired from Tests in 2007 and 2008 respectively, Australia haven’t got a quality leg-spinner who has managed to be a regular in the Test side. “I don’t know whether it’s just the lack of wrist spin bowling...

London, Aug 3 (Ians) Recently-retired England fast bowler Stuart Broad has admitted that the feeling of him not bowling or batting anymore “still hasn’t sunk in”, adding that finishing on top at the end of an Ashes series was all he wanted.
Broad announced that he would retire from the game after day three of the fifth and final Ashes Test at The Oval. He got a fairytale finish to his career by claiming the last two wickets of the match on Day Five as England won by 49 runs to level the series 2-2 with Australia, with Broad taking 22 wickets across five games.
“I felt really relaxed that last day and just for (Chris) Woakes and Moeen [Ali] to set the tone as they did and get some early wickets was awesome. I played so much cricket with both of those guys and it was so special. Ultimately, I just feel...

Ashes 2023: Stuart Broad gets winning send-off as England beat Australia by 49 runs; draw series 2-2
London, July 31 (Ians) Veteran fast-bowler Stuart Broad got his perfect fairytale ending to a glorious cricketing career by picking the last two wickets as England beat Australia by 49 runs in the fifth and final Ashes Test at The Oval on Monday to level an enthralling series 2-2.
Resuming from 135 for no loss, Australia were going great guns with all ten wickets in hand, before a ball change in the 37th over took their top three batters out. Steve Smith and Travis Head led Australia’s recovery before the rain came in.
After the two-hour rain break ended, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali blew Australia away as four wickets fell for only 11 runs. Todd Murphy and Alex Carey frustrated England for a brief period as Australia went from 264 for three to 294 for 8.

Manchester, July 17 (Ians) Former Australia Test captain Tim Paine said he would prefer Josh Hazlewood instead of Scott Boland and sees no place for Cameron Green in the playing eleven for the fourth Ashes Test, set to start on July 19 at Old Trafford. Australia are currently leading five-game Ashes 2-1.
Boland has picked only two wickets in the two Tests he’s played, compared to Hazlewood taking eight wickets in the same period of time. At the third Ashes Test in Headingley, Mitchell Marsh marked his return to Test cricket with a century in the first innings and picked a few scalps as Green sat out due to a low-grade hamstring injury.
“People are going to be slightly disappointed if you’re looking for any headlines or any drastic changes. Both of these teams under their new coaches have tried to set an environment where guys feel really comfortable to...

New Delhi, July 13 (Ians) Former Australia captain Mark Taylor has questioned Pat Cummins over the utilisation of spinner Todd Murphy, emphasising the necessity to provide the young off-spinner with greater opportunities.
Murphy was brought into the team for the third Ashes Test as a direct replacement for the injured Nathan Lyon, but his contribution was limited to a mere 9.3 overs throughout the match, resulting in just a solitary wicket.
Taylor believes Murphy needs to be utilised more frequently by Cummins or drop him altogether for the fourth Test at Old Trafford.
“It’s very tough. I would’ve liked to see him bowl before lunch, and I don’t mean one over before lunch, I thought three or four before lunch when we got those couple of wickets and Ben Stokes came straight to the crease.

Leeds, July 9 (Ians) Though Rain wiped out the first two sessions on Day Three of the ongoing third Ashes Test at Headingley, it didn’t stop the action from moving at a frenetic pace in the one session of play possible on Saturday.
In the end, England reached 27/0 at stumps in a chase of 251 after their bowlers made good use of the overcast conditions to bowl out Australia for 224. Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley remained unbeaten on 18 and 9 respectively for England to leave the required runs to 224.
Resuming from 116/4 and with their lead at 142 runs, the total could have been a lot less for Australia if Travis Head hadn’t struck a magnificent 77 in conditions that were very tricky for batting.
Chris Woakes (3-68) dismissed first-innings centurion Mitchell Marsh (nicked behind) and Alex Carey (chopped onto his stumps) in quick succession, while Mark Wood (3-66) took out Mitchell Starc and...

New Delhi, March 30 (Ians) Durham have signed Australia’s left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann for their upcoming County Championship season. Kuhnemann’s arrival to Durham comes as a replacement for his countrymate, off-spinner Todd Murphy.
Durham said in an official statement that it had initially engaged with Murphy for the 2023 County Championship season, but he was deemed unavailable for the first block of County Championship matches.
Depending on clearance from Cricket Australia, the club added that they are still hopeful Murphy will join the Club following the Ashes, while adding that Kuhnemann will remain with Durham throughout the 2023 season and will be available for the County Championship.
The 26-year old Kuhnemann made his Test debut against India in the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at New Delhi in February this year. In the series, he picked nine wickets in three matches, including a maiden five-wicket haul in Australia’s nine-wicket victory in Indore in March.

Chennai, March 23 (Ians) In 2021, when Mitchell Marsh was elevated to batting at number three in the T20I team, few would have predicted that it would prove to be a master-stroke as Australia went on to win the T20 World Cup in the UAE.
Cut to 2023, and with David Warner unavailable due to injury, Marsh was made the makeshift opener for ODIs against India, slamming 81 and 66 not out in Mumbai and Visakhapatnam.
When Warner came back for the series decider in Chennai, Marsh retained his spot as an opener and made a quick 47 with the veteran left-handed batter slotted in at number four.
Despite getting Player of the Series award in Australia’s 2-1 series win for making 194 runs at an average of 97, Marsh still believes Warner will slot back as an opener in the build up to the Odi World Cup, to be held in India in October-November.

Ahmedabad, March 13 (Ians) Reflecting on the 2-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph, India head coach Rahul Dravid felt the side found people who were able to put in special performances whenever the need came.
Having won the first two Tests in Nagpur and Delhi to retain the trophy, India lost the third Test in Indore by nine wickets and were under pressure going into the final Test in Ahmedabad, which ended in a draw.
“It was a really hard-fought series, there were moments where we were put under extreme pressure by a really good cricket team and we responded. Whenever we needed someone to step up and put in a special performance, we found it.”
“Rohit led the way in the first Test with a brilliant hundred and it was bookended by Virat Kohli’s brilliant 186. In the middle, we had performances from Ashwin, Jadeja, Axar, and Shubman there. I’ve probably missed out a few,...

4th Test, Day 4: Australia trail India by 88 runs after Virat Kohli makes a magnificent 186 (2nd Ld)
Ahmedabad, March 12 (Ians) Talismanic batter Virat Kohli showed impeccable grit, discipline and concentration to make a magnificent 186 as India took a 91-run lead over Australia after being bowled out for 571 in their first innings during the fourth Test at Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.
At stumps, Australia reached 3/0 in six overs of their second innings and trail India by 88 runs with one day left in the match. Travis Head made all the runs, as he and makeshift opener Matthew Kuhnemann, in place of an injured Usman Khawaja, negotiated the tricky six overs from Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami.
If Shubman Gill was the talk of the town with his sparkling 128 on Saturday, it was Kohli’s turn to be in the spotlight on Sunday to break his drought for a Test century which lasted 1025 days, 41 innings and more than three years.

Ahmedabad, March 12 (Ians) Virat Kohli and Ks Bharat brought up half-century of their partnership in a slow session of Test cricket as India reached 362/4 at lunch and still trail Australia by 118 runs on day four of the fourth Test at Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.
On a slow, flat pitch, India made a total of 73 runs in 32 overs, with Kohli and Bharat unbeaten on 88 and 25 respectively, while losing the wicket of Ravindra Jadeja. It was a session where runs came at a slow pace, thanks to some disciplined bowling from Australia.
Kohli, at his focused best, added only 29 runs to his overnight score, but is now in touching distance of a highly-awaited 28th Test century, with his last Test hundred coming against Bangladesh in November 2019 at Kolkata.
The session began with Jadeja cutting Todd Murphy uppishly against past slip for four. After taking another four through mid-off against Murphy, Jadeja mistimed to mid-on,...

Ahmedabad, March 11 (Ians) Opener Shubman Gill looked in sublime touch to slam an unbeaten 65 off 119 balls as India reached 129/2 in 37 overs at lunch on day three in the fourth Test against Australia on Saturday.
In a session where Australia’s bowlers rarely looked threatening, Gill drove, pulled and slashed his way to reaching a half-century. While he was patient against spinners, he fully cashed on the pace from an expensive Mitchell Starc. Ahmedabad, March 10 (Ians) India openers Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma saw off the tricky 10 overs with relative ease to be unbeaten on 18 and 17 respectively as the hosts were 36/0, trailing Australia by 444 runs at stumps on second day of the fourth Test, here on Friday.
With the pitch still in favour of stroke play at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Rohit was pristine in his timing, flicking and cutting off Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon with relative ease. On the other hand, Gill sweetly played a short-arm jab on a short ball from Cameron Green, before dancing down the pitch to smash a six off Lyon at the stroke of stumps.

New Delhi, March 9 (Ians) Former Australia coach Justin Langer believes left-arm spin all-rounder Ashton Agar could have made an impact with the ball in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in India.
Agar made a comeback to Test cricket through Australia’s third Test against South Africa in Sydney and went wicketless in the drawn match. But when he landed in India for the Test tour, Todd Murphy and Matthew Kuhnemann were given places in the playing eleven to team up with Nathan Lyon.
With reports of Agar struggling to get his rhythm in the nets, he was sent back home to turn out for Western Australia in domestic competitions. Agar is scheduled to be back in India for the three ODIs starting on March 17.
“It was really strange because Ash Agar played the last Test in Sydney. That was on a pretty flat wicket to be fair, and he copped a bit of criticism.

India skipper Rohit Sharma said he would have also batted first.
“We would have batted first. We know what needs to be done. We need to regroup as a team, you can reflect on so many things. Not the surface what we saw in the first three Tests, looks like a good pitch,...

Ahmedabad, March 8 (Ians) On the eve of the final Test, captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday called former coach Ravi Shastri’s assessment of India’s performance in the third Test against Australia as ‘absolutely rubbish’, saying that the people outside don’t know what sort of talk happens in the dressing room.
After taking a 2-0 lead, India suffered a nine-wicket loss in the third Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Indore and Shastri had said that hosts were overconfident and complacent going into the game.
“Honestly, when you win two games if people outside feel that we are overconfident, it’s absolutely rubbish. Because you want to do your best in all four games. You don’t want to stop by winning just two games, it is as simple as that,” Rohit said in the pre-match press conference.

Ahmedabad, March 7 (Ians) Australian spinner Todd Murphy, who has dismissed Virat Kohli in three consecutive Test matches of the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy, on Tuesday revealed that it has been an ‘awesome’ achievement and a really enjoyable battle while recalling his experience of bowling to the star India batter for the first time in the series opener in Nagpur.
Murphy had Kohli superbly caught down the leg side by Alex Carey during a dream Test debut that netted the 22-year-old seven wickets in India’s first innings and further impressive performances during the second and third Tests have only further confirmed that the right-arm belongs at the top level.
Just earning a debut cap was a big honour for Murphy, but dismissing Kohli on three separate occasions during his first three Test appearances has provided even more joy for the young spinner.

New Delhi, Feb 20 (Ians) Australia captain Pat Cummins has flown back to Sydney due to a serious family illness but is expected to return for the third Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series in Indore.
The fast bowler was en route to Sydney on Sunday but is expected to be back in India to play the final two matches in Indore and Ahmedabad, Cricket Australia said on Monday.
Cummins led the Baggy Greens in their second Test defeat in Delhi, where India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after claiming an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series with its six-wicket win in the second Test in Delhi. Australia lost the first Test in Nagpur by an innings and 32 runs.
However, changes are looming for the Australian squad after it fell 2-0 behind in the series.

Ashwin set up the collapse to pick 3/59, before Jadeja ran through the Australian batting line-up as Australia crashed to 113 all out, after starting the day from 61/1 and being 86/2 at one stage, in their second innings. The Australian batting implosion gave India a target of 115, which they completed in 28.4 overs.
Rohit Sharma began the chase by driving wide of mid-on for a boundary off Matthew Kuhnemann in the opening over. But in the next over, he lost his opening partner Kl Rahul in an unlucky fashion. Rahul flicked well to the right of short leg off Nathan Lyon, but the ball lobbed up in the air after hitting the top of forward short leg’s pad and the keeper took an easy catch.
Rohit showed exquisite timing in whipping an overpitched delivery off Kuhnemann between deep mid-wicket and long-on. Post lunch, India began with an attacking intent, as Cheteshwar Pujara danced...

The win also means India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy too, with two matches still left.
Post lunch, resuming from 14/1, India began with an attacking intent. Cheteshwar Pujara danced down the pitch to whip Matthew Kuhnemann through mid-wicket for four. For Australia, who elected to bat first after winning the toss, left-handed opener Usman Khawaja was precise in footwork and pristine in strokeplay to make 81, the first fifty by a visiting batter on the ongoing tour. Peter Handscomb looked impressive in his 72 not out. But losing wickets in back-to-back fashion thrice may come to hurt them later on.
The final session began with Australia reaching 200 in 59.4 overs. Handscomb started off by using the pace from Axar Patel’s delivery to guide past slip for a boundary. When Jadeja pitched outside the off-stump, Handscomb was quick to go on backfoot and punch past backward-point for another boundary.
After Handscomb got his fifty in 110 balls, Jadeja broke the stubborn 59-run stand by trapping Pat Cummins lbw, with the Australian skipper burning a review. Two balls later, Jadeja castled Todd Murphy through the gate.
Nathan Lyon was delightful in punching and driving off Shami.

New Delhi, Feb 17 (Ians) India captain Rohit Sharma and his deputy K.L. Rahul saw out the remaining nine overs to take the hosts to 21/0 in nine overs and trail Australia by 242 runs at stumps on day one of the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday.
Rohit and Rahul are not out on 13 and 4 respectively after senior pacer Mohammed Shami picked four wickets while the spin duo of off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each to bowl out Australia for 263 in the first innings.

At one point, it looked like Australia will have a huge lead, as India were reduced to 139/7 in 50.5 overs. But Axar slammed 74 off 115 balls and shared an important 114-run partnership off 177 balls with Ravichandran Ashwin, who made 37 off 71 balls, for the eighth wicket to put India on the threshold of taking a lead.
But they missed out on the psychological advantage by a solitary run as Australia wrapped up the Indian first innings within 3.3 overs of taking the second new ball. For Australia, premier off-spinner Nathan Lyon starred with 5-60, including taking four wickets in the morning session.
The final session began with Lyon and Todd Murphy sharing bowling duties and countering them were Axar and Ashwin with defence, strike rotation and some lucky byes. As India reached 200, the crowd got its voice back and were cheering loudly for Axar and Ashwin.

New Delhi, Jan 14 (Ians) Legendary Australia cricketer Ian Chappell believes Australia has a chance of a Test series victory over India under the leadership of a “pretty decent” leader in Pat Cummins. Chappell was a member of Bill Lawry’s famous 1969 side which won the Test series in India 3-1.
Australia’s last series triumph over India came in 2004 under the leadership of Adam Gilchrist and since then, they have been unable to replicate that same result in four successive trips to the country.
But with the four-match series, played for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting from February 9 in Nagpur, Chappell is optimistic about Australia winning against India in challenging sub-continent conditions though he admitted to being concerned about the visitors’ batting.
“Australia have a chance. Bowling-wise, I think they’ll be Ok. They’ll be light on for a second spinner because I don’t know anything about Todd Murphy.

Melbourne, Jan 14 (Ians) Ignored for the upcoming Test series against India, Australia’s white-ball leg-spinner Adam Zampa has vowed not to give up on making his debut in the latest version of the game but would prioritise doing well in white-ball cricket and excel for Australia in the Odi World Cup in India later this year.
Australia’s national cricket selectors on Wednesday selected a four-man spin arsenal for the upcoming four-Test tour of India with rookie spinner Todd Murphy making the grade on the back of some superb performances at the domestic level and for Australia A.
Murphy joins experienced campaigner Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson as potential spin partners for Nathan Lyon on a tour. Agar has recently made it back to the Test squad and played the third and final Test against South Africa and continues to be preferred as the national selectors confirmed an 18-player squad for the four-Test Border-Gavaskar series.

New Delhi, Jan 13 (Ians) Former Australian off-spinner Steve O’Keefe is excited about the prospect of young offie Todd Murphy in line for a potential Test debut on tour to India, saying the 22-year-old is as talented as premier spinner Nathan Lyon.
Murphy, 22, got his maiden Test call-up as part of the 18-man tour for the four-Test series of India, picked to be the fourth spinner alongside veteran Lyon, left-arm spinner Ashton Agar and leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson.
Having played alongside Murphy at the domestic level with the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League, O’Keefe has backed Murphy to succeed in India despite having played just seven first-class matches for his domestic team Victoria.
“He’s as talented an off-spinner I’ve seen since Nathan Lyon. Whether it be Shield cricket or him stepping up in the Prime Minister’s game, or the West Indies … he also went over to...
