When most people think of foster care, they usually think about what they've seen on TV, which isn't a lot.
It's just one of those things writers don't tend to dig deep into, except for a few choice storylines that usually end up on the cutting floor.
If you're a fan of family dramas, though, there's a good chance you know about The Fosters.
The Fosters was a Freeform series that featured a family thrown into disarray when a teenage girl (Maia Mitchell) and her younger brother (Hayden Byerly) end up placed in their care.
There's also a good chance you remember its spinoff, Good Trouble, which is currently in its fifth season and features several characters from the latter living their college lives in Los Angeles.
While both shows showed you a side of the system not typically shown on broadcast, another, just three years before, was also doing that.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched “Kiss Me and Smile for Me,” the March 16 episode of “Good Trouble.”
The Fosters family is changing again — Maia Mitchell has exited Freeform’s “Good Trouble.” The actress has portrayed Callie Foster since “The Fosters” premiered in 2013, and went on to reprise the role in its spinoff series, with her final episode airing on Wednesday night.
During the episode, Callie revealed that Kathleen (Constance Zimmer) had helped her land her dream job with the ACLU, but that meant she had to move to Washington, D.C. Good Trouble‘s Callie is all work and no play in next Tuesday’s episode (Freeform, 8/7c), but luckily, her Fosters brother Jude pops in for a visit and fixes all that in TVLine’s exclusive sneak peek.
Much to Mariana’s delight, Jude gets Callie out of her “work cave” to join a party at The Coterie. Callie even gets all dolled up, leading Mariana to wonder if her sister is “dressing up for a certain someone.” That piques Jude’s interest, but Callie insists there’s no guy in her life, then asks her little bro if he’s seeing anyone.

Freeform has set Tuesday, January 8, for the premiere of Good Trouble, its spinoff from The Fosters that follows Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) as they embark on the next phase of their young-adult lives in Los Angeles. Check out the first sneak peek below.
After moving to the Coterie in downtown L.A., Callie and Mariana realize that living on their own is not all that it’s cracked up to be. Tommy Martinez, Sherry Cola, Zuri Adele and Roger Bart also star.
Five The Fosters alums are set to appear in Good Trouble: Teri Polo and Sherri Saum are reprising their roles as the adoptive moms of Callie and Mariana, and the original series’ siblings Hayden Byerly, Noah Centineo and David Lambert also are back for guest turns.

The time has come to say goodbye to what can arguably be TV’s most progressive family in history — or as some of the kids may say these days: TV’s most “woke” family. Created by Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige, The Fosters ended its five-season run tonight after providing television landscape with a series that gave a new meaning of a modern family. The Fosters tackled normal family drama such as sibling dynamics, teen angst, parent-child conflict, and domestic strife, but the Freeform series bent the traditional narrative to the times with a same-sex couple of Stef (Teri Polo) and Lena (Sherri Saum) raising a blended family that included Brandon (David Lambert), Stef’s biological son, twins Jesus (Noah Centineo) & Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) and Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Jude (Hayden Byerly).

Heavy. Intense. Heartfelt. Those are just some of the adjectives used by the cast of The Fosters to describe Tuesday’s 100th episode, which also serves as the first half of the two-hour Season 5B finale (airing at 8/7c on Freeform).
“It’s not an explosive episode like a lot of [our] finales and premieres,” star Maia Mitchell tells TVLine. Instead, the milestone hour “ups the ante a little bit on the emotional side.”

To say that the television series, The Fosters, has consistently broken ground in attacking modern issues that would have never been addressed on television a couple of decades ago is an understatement. The Fosters takes on these issues and completely blows them out of the water. The show’s plot is centered on a lesbian couple who are rearing a mix of their biological and adopted mixed-race and ethnicity children. If this contemporary family makeup is not controversial enough for those on the extreme right, try on the fact that the youngest of the children, Jude, played by Hayden Byerly, has

There is a reason why The Fosters is one of the best family dramas on television.
The Fosters Season 4 Episode 15 is a prime example of what the show looks like when it’s at it’s best. Bold, relevant, and fearlessly tackling real life, occasionally controversial, issues with grace, tact, and without being too preachy.
When the show is at the top of its game, it gives us thought-provoking television, representative of the diverse world that we live in. It makes us invested in the family, so much so, that we feel like we're a part of it ourselves.
And the best part is, regardless of our differences, it's plausible that we could be part of this family.
Sex-Ed was probably one of the most balanced installments of the season. It slowed down on the overly dramatic angst fest on steroids, that has been prevalent, and gave us simple family...
