In May 2018, Jussie Smollett appeared as the narrator and correspondent in an episode of the Epix documentary series “America Divided” that explored the subject of hate crimes, specifically lynching, in the state of Tennessee.
Now that the “Empire” actor has been charged with filing a false police report and Chicago police are convinced he staged his own hate attack because he was “dissatisfied with his salary,” Smollett’s involvement in the show is cast in a different light.
“When the news initially came out, we were horrified by the story and for myself, it’s hard to get away from the coincidence,” the series’ director Lucian Read told Variety. “Of course in this country we believe in innocent until proven guilty, but assuming the allegations are true, I wonder whether coincidence is the right word — to take this truth about hate crimes and turn it into a fiction like that,...

TV legend Norman Lear is putting his full support behind “Grey’s Anatomy” star Jesse Williams, as critics of the actor float a petition demanding his firing.
“I’ve seen and attended a ton of awards shows in my time, and no one has ever put his soul and his ass on the line so fully and so truthfully as Jesse Williams did at the Bet Awards last week,” Lear told IndieWire in a statement. “Wither thou goest, Mr. Williams, I will follow.”
Lear is an executive producer on the upcoming Epix documentary series “America Divided,” which takes a look at inequality in the United States. Williams, a former teacher, is featured in a segment as he looks at the battle to address this in education.

All those lines from “The Sound of Music” about catching a cloud and pinning it down, holding a moonbeam in your hand and keeping a wave upon the sand ran through my mind while watching the new documentary “99%: The Occupy Wall Street Collaborative Film.” Since the movement itself avoided labels, leaders and agendas, it’s next to impossible to tell its story in a way that seems remotely definitive. Not that directors Aaron Aites, Audrey Ewell, Nina Krstic and Lucian Read don’t give it their best shot, compiling footage from hundreds of filmmakers and Occupy participants and weaving together a history.

99%: The Occupy Wall Street Collaborative Film
Directed by Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell
USA, 2012
In 2009, filmmakers Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell presented Until the Light Takes Us, an enlightening – excuse the pun – exploration of Norway’s black metal movement, a scene that picked up steam in the 90s and became inundated with controversy surrounding church burnings, murders and satanic posturing. The filmmakers brushed aside the media outcry that had tarnished an initially forthright youth rebellion, opening up the process of how these young, isolated individuals had pushed back against the crushing cultural hegemony of globalisation through the power of their music, and had the odds increasingly stacked against them by the many who endeavoured to draw a line under the movement and pervert its meaning, ironically adding fuel to the fire in sustaining the vehemently opposed satanic elements. The film achieved what all good documentaries should, challenging preconceptions and...
