Ghostface will return in Scream 7 for Paramount and Spyglass, and Variety reports this week that franchise mainstay Courteney Cox is in talks to return as Gale Weathers.
Cox’s Gale Weathers has been part of the franchise since the very beginning, with Cox starring in every single installment in the franchise to date. While Dewey Riley was killed off in the fifth installment, Gale just keeps on surviving, most recently beating the odds in Scream VI. How many more massacres can Gale manage to survive? Is her number finally coming up?
It was recently announced that Neve Campbell will also return in Scream 7, with Campbell herself revealing that she’ll be back as Sidney Prescott in the upcoming Spyglass sequel.
Additionally, original Scream scribe Kevin Williamson will Direct the film.
Williamson recently wrote on Instagram, “It’s been nearly 30 years since my very first script, ‘Scream,’ was directed by the legendary Wes Craven.

Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures wanted to move quickly on Scream 7… then the version of the film they wanted to move quickly on crumbled piece by piece. Scream (2022) and Scream VI directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are finishing work on their Universal Monsters movie Abigail (formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter), so with returning writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick working on the script, the companies hired Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon to direct the film and started reaching out to actors. Jenna Ortega allegedly wanted a substantial pay raise to reprise the role of Tara Carpenter… and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. So Ortega was out, but Melissa Barrera was on board to come back as Tara’s sister Samantha. Until she was fired from...

Last week, we heard the shocking news that Scream (2022) and Scream VI star Melissa Barrera won’t be reprising the role of troubled heroine Samantha Carpenter in the upcoming Scream 7, as she had been fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass Media. The next day, it was revealed that Barrera’s co-star Jenna Ortega, who played Samantha’s sister Tara, will also be absent from Scream 7. Scheduling issues were blamed for Ortega’s exit, as she’ll be spending several months filming Wednesday season 2 in Ireland next year. Many fans rejected that explanation, assuming Ortega had dropped out in solidarity with Barrera. But a new The Hollywood Reporter article claims that Ortega’s Scream 7 absence is actually due to a pay dispute – you know, the same issue that caused Neve Campbell to...

For characters in the Scream movies, it’s wise never to answer the phone — lest Ghostface be on the other end of the line. But after a tumultuous few months for the franchise, Scream studio Spyglass is likely hoping its calls will indeed go answered as it attempts to keep its next installment from getting the ax amid a major casting shakeup and subsequent creative pivot.
On Nov. 21, it broke that Spyglass had fired Melissa Barrera from the upcoming seventh Scream movie over social media posts that company decision-makers characterized as antisemitic. When Neve Campbell announced that she would not be appearing in Scream VI over not getting paid enough to play Sidney Prescott, it put a cloud over not just the movie but industry shortcomings as well. Unfortunately, it was really no surprise that Paramount was holding out on paying her what she deserved. Now, Neve Campbell is yet again defending her decision to bow out of the franchise that made her famous.
On the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival (via MovieWeb), Neve Campbell was asked by KiSS 92.5 (via MovieWeb) about stepping away from Sidney Prescott and Scream. “It’s a hard question because it’s a matter of principle as well. As much as I love the characters that I’ve played and ones that I’ve had a history with, it’s also very important to me the concept of equal pay. We’re still not there yet.

Hello, Sidney…As portrayed by Neve Campbell, Sidney Prescott was one of the great final girls in slasher movie history. No boyfriend, freaky film student or long-lost half-brother could knock her off. For that, she was easily the face – not to be confused with the ghostface – of the Scream franchise. And just like the fans, Neve Campbell knew her worth. It turns out, the studio didn’t. Now, Scream writer Kevin Williamson has come to her defense, saying she was owed every penny she asked for.
Speaking on the Happy Horror Time podcast (as per IndieWire), Williamson – who wrote the first two Screams as well as Scream 4 – said that Neve Campbell deserves the pay bump. “I totally respect her opinion…I know exactly where she’s coming from, I know her well. It’s common knowledge that the Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds song “Red Right Hand” is the hit most associated with the Scream franchise. Still, there was another single that almost made its way into scary movie canon with the release of Scream 2 (1997).
Rather than an unnerving anthem for the villain, this song would have represented the complicated triumph of the hero. As it stands, Scream 2 concludes with Sidney standing tall and walking away from the terrors that had been deployed to exploit and destroy her. She’s accompanied by the song “She Said” by Collective Soul, a beautifully reflective rumination on a life filled with loneliness and regret, one in which truth, purpose and forgiveness is emotively sought.
But, as well as the song fits, it was not the first creative choice for the sequel’s concluding sequence. When Bloody Disgusting recently spoke with Grammy and Peabody...

As a famous character from another long-running cinematic franchise once said, "No one's ever really gone." That axiom goes double for horror franchises, whether you're talking about a fierce survivor or a vicious killer. The return of the latter type of character is such a cliche that the original "Scream" from 1996 made explicit reference to it during its finale. Before Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) could "come back to life for one last scare," as film nerd Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) warned, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) shot him in the head. "Not in my movie," she intoned, signifying once again that "Scream" knew the rules and could either play by them or break them.
After series director Wes Craven passed away in 2015, the "Scream" franchise has been taken over by the filmmakers collectively known as Radio Silence (directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and producer Chad Villella) to much praise and success.

John McNaughton remembers the first time he read the script for Wild Things, the rampantly sexy neo-noir from 1998. The director – then best known for the grim, ever-contentious Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer – needed a commercial film. “To ingratiate myself into Hollywood to some degree,” he tells me.
In the story, two Florida teens from opposite sides of the tracks – bitchy socialite offspring Kelly (Denise Richards) and swamp-dwelling trailer trash Suzie (Neve Campbell) – accuse their dishy guidance counsellor Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon) of rape. Lombardo is then investigated by dodgy cop Ray Duquette (Kevin Bacon).
“I was lying in bed reading the script and I could see it coming that Matt Dillon was falsely accused,” recalls McNaughton. “I thought, Ok this is some TV movie, I know where this is going, so I skipped ahead to the last three pages.” But the end was so unexpected that McNaughton had “no...

Scream VI (read our review Here) is the first entry in the slasher franchise not to feature Neve Campbell as heroine Sidney Prescott. Sidney was originally part of the story crafted by Scream 2022 writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, but had to be written out when Campbell passed on the project due to a pay dispute. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – the directors of both Scream 2022 and Scream VI – recently said they hope to see the franchise continue with a Scream 7 and beyond, whether they’re still involved or not… and judging by the opening weekend box office of Scream VI, it looks like they’ll get their wish. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett said that if they are involved with further Scream sequels, they’re still hoping to get Campbell to return for another one.
