London, April 14 (Ians) Something has to give in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime when Aston Villa entertain Newcastle United in what promises to be a vital game in the battle for Europe.
Newcastle travel to Villa Park with five wins in their last five matches, while Aston Villa climbed up to sixth last weekend after their fourth consecutive win, as they continue to improve under the guidance of Unai Emery. Aston Villa will be without influential forward Leon Bailey with a thigh injury but have Ollie Watkins in form with nine goals in 11 games.
Tottenham will be watching that result closely ahead of their home game against Bournemouth, who have shown their battling qualities in recent weeks.
Harry Kane and Son Heung-min will again be Tottenham’s main threat as they continue their efforts for a top-four finish, a Xinhua report said.

London, April 5 (Ians) Chelsea’s first game since Graham Potter’s sacking on Sunday failed to see any magic solution to the club’s problems as they drew 0-0 at home to Liverpool.
Interim coach Bruno Saltor saw his side miss several good chances, while Reece James and Kai Havertz both had goals disallowed in a result that leaves Liverpool eighth in the table and Chelsea 11th, with both struggling to qualify for Europe next season.
On Tuesday night, Brighton gave their chances of European football a big boost with a 2-0 win away to relegation threatened Bournemouth. Young striker Ewan Ferguson put the visitors ahead after 27 minutes and after withstanding pressure from the home side, Julio Encio scored Brighton’s second in injury time, a Xinhua report said.
Aston Villa made it three wins from three games to climb above Liverpool thanks to a 2-1 win away to managerless Leicester City.

London, April 3 (Ians) Chelsea sacked coach Graham Potter on Sunday night after their 2-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa, during which the fans at Stamford Bridge sang “you don’t know what you’re doing” at Potter.
The defeat leaves Chelsea 11th in the Premier League, with little chance of qualifying for Europe next season and just 10 days before they play Real Madrid in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, reports Xinhua.
Potter arrived at Chelsea from Brighton on September 8 and signed a five-year contract, but leaves the club after winning just seven of his 22 league games in charge.
Chelsea have confirmed former Brighton defender Bruno Saltar, who moved as a coach to Stamford Bridge with Potter, as their interim replacement.

London, April 2 (Ians) Leicester City on Sunday sacked head coach Brendan Rodgers in the wake of their 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.
That result on Saturday was their fifth defeat in six league games and saw the club drop into the relegation zone with just ten games left in the season.
The decision ends the former Liverpool and Celtic coach’s four-year stay at the club, during which he led them to the 2021 Fa Cup and consecutive fifth-place finishes in his first two seasons in charge, a Xinhua report said.
Club chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha issued a statement explaining the decision to sack Rodgers, saying that although the club had wanted “continuity and stability”, the time had come for a change.
“Regrettably, the desired improvement has not been forthcoming and, with ten games of the season remaining, the board is compelled to take alternative action to protect our Premier League status.

London, Jan 2 (Ians) The Premier League’s hectic schedule continues this week, with another round of matches ahead of the Fa Cup at the weekend. The standout game of the week is on Tuesday night and sees league leaders Arsenal take on third-placed Newcastle United.
Arsenal have shown no ill effects from the World Cup break or the injury to Gabriel Jesus, winning their first two games of the holiday period with some impressive football and a win would take them 10 points clear of Manchester City, who visit Chelsea on Thursday night.
Leeds United held on to end Newcastle’s six-game winning streak, but Eddie Howe’s men have just one defeat all season and will be optimistic about taking something from their visit to the Emirates Stadium.

London, Nov 10 (Ians) Coach Gareth Southgate on Thursday announced a 26-man England squad for the 2022 football World Cup, including Leicester midfielder James Maddison along with Newcastle striker Callum Wilson.
Both the players have not played for England since 2019, but recent club form has seen them earn a call-up for the FIFA World Cup which begins on November 20 in Qatar.
On including Maddison in the team, Southgate said, “He is playing really well. We think he can give us something slightly different to the attacking players that we’ve got. He’s playing as good as any of the attacking players in this country. He is a little bit different from the others. I think we need that.”
Maddison last played for England in November 2019 while 2020 Wilson’s last international cap came a month before in October 2019.

London, Oct 28 (Ians) Defending champions Manchester City visit an improving Leicester City, while Arsenal take on Nottingham Forrest, and new Aston Villa coach Unai Emery could reflect on what might have been when his new club visits Newcastle in the Premier League this weekend.
Consecutive wins have eased the pressure on Leicester City coach Brendan Rodgers, but his side now faces a difficult home game against second-placed Manchester City in the first match of the weekend.
Pep Guardiola’s side could be without goal-machine Erling Haaland, who was substituted at halftime in midweek with a foot injury and his absence could help Leicester continue to improve their defensive record.
Chelsea coach Graham Potter returns to face Brighton seven weeks after leaving them to move to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have improved since his arrival, while Potter’s replacement, Roberto De Zerbi has yet to win a game, with just two points...

London, Sep 16 (Ians) Preparations for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on Monday mean that a shortage of police has led to the postponement of three Premier League matches scheduled for this weekend, with just seven matches to be played.
The games between Chelsea and Liverpool, Manchester United and Leeds United and Brighton and Crystal Palace have all been put off due to the lack of police, and while new Chelsea coach, Graham Potter will be grateful for more time to work with his squad and Brighton will be able to find a replacement for Potter, the postponements will only lead to further congest an already crowded fixture calendar.
Nottingham Forest and Fulham play a match between two recently promoted sides, with Forest still smarting at how they allowed Bournemouth to come back from 2-0 down to win 2-3 in the last game at the City Ground.

London, Aug 24 (Ians) Leicester City have rejected a third bid for defender Wesley Fofana from Chelsea, the club confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.
“The club has invested in him and in his time here he’s been absolutely brilliant, but you have to set a standard of behavior and if it’s not quite right and your focus isn’t right, that only hurts your teammate,” Leicester City coach Brendan Rodgers said.
Rodgers confirmed that the 21-year-old, who missed training last week, will now train with the club’s development squad after asking to be allowed to move.
Rodgers had previously left the defender out of the squad for the weekend defeat to Southampton, saying he was “not quite in the right frame of mind.”
Chelsea has now made four offers for the player, who joined Leicester from St Etienne in 2020.

London, May 16 (Ians) Youri Tielemans scored a wonder goal and the video assistant referee (Var) then came to the rescue as Leicester City beat Chelsea 1-0 to win a first Fa Cup title in their 137-year club history.
Tielemans fired into the top left corner from some 25 metres in the 63rd minute in front of a crowd of around 21,000 fans, allowed into the famed arena as coronavirus restrictions are being eased in England, Dpa reports.
But victory was not theirs until an 89th-minute equalizer from Chelsea was nullified by Var because Ben Chilwell was deemed offside by the smallest of margins in the build-up.
It was Leicester's first Fa Cup trophy after four lost finals in the past, the last one 52 years ago in 1969, and their second major title after a sensational Premier League success in 2016. They also have three League Cup crowns.
Captain Kasper Schmeichel also made key saves...

The Premier League has always been known for its high intensity since its formation in 1992. No other league in Europe can offer the high-tempo of play that England’s top division can, and because of this it has attracted the cream of the crop of talent. With the best talent comes the biggest rivalries and the most passion, and inevitably, that often spills over.
The men in the middle have certainly had their hands full over the last 24 years in an attempt to keep the game as free-flowing as possible, but at times the big egos and rivalries that have formed have made it a near-impossible task. Consider trying to handle the latest round of Roy Keane versus Patrick Vieira to name just one.
While bone-crunching, eye-watering tackles a plenty over the years, fans have often had to look at replays through the gaps in their fingers,...

Football documentaries - they're a funny old game. Today's fly-on-the-wall peeks into the lives of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo may have marked a welcome return of the genre - but compared to mud-and-studs docs of old, they're as over-polished and blemish-free as one of David Beckham's Armani suits.
And so ahead of Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and co's new BBC documentary series Out of Their League, let's reminisce about some classic football programmes - when the beautiful game felt like less a Nike advert, more like an episode of Bullseye.
1. Graham Taylor gets the sack
After an abysmal 1992 European Championships, England manager needed some positive PR, so the Fa allowed camera crews to follow him round during the entire 1994 World Cup qualification campaign for An Impossible Job.
Whoops: this spectacularly backfired for old Turnip Head, as England were knocked out. But not before Taylor effed and jeffed his way through every single match,...

Jurgen Klopp has arrived on English soil and comfortably moved into Brendan Rodgers’ old Merseyside 1.2 million penthouse apartment. His arrival as Liverpool Fc manager could prove to be one of the most exciting things to happen to the Premier League since Jose Mourinho’s arrival in 2004 and despite the German labelling himself as “the normal one” he has the ability to be as influential at Anfield as the “special one” was (and still is, kind of) at Stamford Bridge.
The 48-year-old took over Dortmund in 2008 after the club finished 13th in Bundesliga under their previous manager Thomas Doll. Prior to his move he managed Mainz 05 from 2001 to 2008 and achieved promotion to the Bundesliga in 2004 before qualifying for the UEFA Cup in 2005-6. Under the German’s leadership Dortmund won two successive Bundesliga titles, the German Cup and reached the Champions League final in 2013 at Wembley under Klopp’s stewardship.

It’s not often that I write a list where it’s harder to condense ideas rather than devise them but creating a feature involving unsuccessful players at Newcastle United is as simple as getting Brendan Rodgers to talk about himself.
The sorting process is relatively simple. You just have to ask three questions. Did the player play during Kevin Keegan’s 1995-96 or Bobby Robson’s 2001-04? Is the player Alan Shearer? Were they part of Alan Pardew’s remarkable fifth place finish in 2011-12? Right, now if the answer is no for each then they were probably a Tyneside failure.
Obviously there are a few exceptions (Antoine Sibierski for starters): a handful of players have escaped the shame of being placed on this list as my warm heart believes they were either poorly managed or not really expected to be any good in the first place.

One of the biggest questions that Brendan Rodgers faced during his time at Liverpool was whether or not he was able to attract big-name players to Anfield. Through no fault of his own Rodgers hadn’t been in management long enough to develop world class allegiances and all he brought to the Reds was a distinctly average Joe Allen from his sprightly Swansea days.
New coach, Jurgen Klopp has double the amount of management experience than Rodgers and after spending six years in charge of Borussia Dortmund he has a wealth of friendships, loyalties and professional admiration among his peers. This would no doubt have been a key factor in Tom Werner and John W Henry’s decision to sack Rodgers and appoint the German manager as a coach of Klopp’s magnitude (or in fact, their second choice, Carlo Ancelotti) don’t come along very often.

Brendan Rodgers simply had to go. His once intuitive, fresh and admirable management style rapidly became infected by poor results, ill self-awareness and the inability to handle Liverpool’s fleeting cycle of expectation.
Less than 24 hours after Rodgers’ sacking, Jurgen Klopp emerged as the leading candidate to succeed the Northern Irish coach and despite wanting a year away from football it looks likely he will return to management after just five months away. Hallelujah. Football without the former Dortmund boss is like Bastian Schweinsteiger playing for Manchester United, it’s not quite right and makes you feel you nostalgic about former Bundesliga campaigns.

Brendan Rodgers’ 2018 sell by date is starting to look a little generous. Like a Safeway branded tin of corned beef that you have had in your kitchen cupboard for three years, the Liverpool boss no longer looks as alluring as he once did. Yes, he’s still digestible and will most-likely fill you up with a large helping of Europa League goodness but his tactics, results and managerial competence over the last month has upset numerous Liverpool fans’ stomachs.
So much so, that Rodgers – who almost delivered the Premier League title to Merseyside in 2013-14 – has come under a great deal of pressure from the English media, pundits and Reds’ supporters. Despite winning Liverpool’s first two games of the 2015-16 campaign the 42-year-old has only picked up one win (in ninety minutes) from his last eight games and disappointing performances against West Ham United, Bordeaux,...

A cushioned first touch and a mischievous look up. Run. Step-over, step-over. Goal.
There’s nothing more eye-catching than a confident footballer effortlessly dancing past their opposition. The dribbling-kings are the most important player in any football side as they open up spaces, ruin tactical formations and provide an unpredictable glimpse of magic that can change the course of a game at any point.
As these talented world-beaters carry the football like they have velcro on their boots (and the ball was one of those luminous felt 5-a-side things) you can only marvel at their confidence and natural ability. Lionel Messi changed the game. His dribbling skills are inconceivable and the Barcelona winger appears to be some sort of football god (just ask Jerome Boateng) who has been created by Zinedine Zidane and Diego Maradona to terrorise defenders as their legs aren’t up to it anymore.

Football fans around the world rejoice, the Premier League is back. Arguments have been commonplace over the past number of years about style over substance, but England’s top flight remains the one league in Europe enthusiasts look forward to watching. The 2015-2016 season will be no different, as people wait to see just who (if anybody) can challenge Chelsea for the prestigious championship trophy.
Last season’s title chase was relatively tame. Neither Manchester City nor Arsenal really looked likely of pipping Jose Mourinho’s men, and both Manchester United and Liverpool was inept. This time last year doom and gloom stained the walls of the St Mary’s Stadium as Southampton’s squad was carefully dissected by bigger teams with more trophies, more money and more Brendan Rodgers than them.
Everyone wrote them off and for good reason; they had lost the core of their side that included manager Mauricio Pochettino moving to Tottenham Hotspur, Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert leaving for Liverpool, and Luke Shaw popping off to Manchester United. Behind the scenes, Southampton were carefully rebuilding and the appointment of Ronald Koeman, acquisitions of Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic, and a fearless refusal to accept they were beaten ended with the Saints finishing seventh in the Barclays Premier League.
This season, there is no underdog status or sympathetic transition for Koeman – and Newcastle United will be fully aware of Dutch manager’s slick and adventurous playing style.

A sea of red shirts overpowered the tangerine orange of the Brisbane Roar as Liverpool fans blasted out their spine tingling rendition of ‘You Will Never Walk Alone’ that echoed around Lang Park. Brendan Rodgers looked unfazed by the harmonic battle cry and selected four of his new signings in his first eleven as well as Divock Origi who was out on loan at Lille last season.
Joe Gomez started at left back, Nathaniel Clyne at right back, James Milner played alongside Jordan Henderson in the middle of midfield and Danny Ings, Adam Lallana and Origi competed a 4-3-3 formation. The system didn’t look entirely comfortable and despite the Reds dominating most of the possession their counter attacks were staggered and would have looked more fluid playing a 4-1-2-1-2 that would have gave new signing Ings more comfort than being isolated on the left flank.

Liverpool are to set to agree a deal with Aston Villa over the signing of star striker Christian Benteke, according to The Telegraph.
The Reds are now prepared to meet the Belgium’s £32.5 million release clause and make the striker their second marquee signing of the summer.
Initially the Merseyside club had refused to match the asking price but reports now suggest they are ready to submit the bid. The reported Interest from rivals Manchester United over the past 24 hours could have played a part in Liverpool’s sudden interest.
A fresh offer will come as a relief to Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who has been eager to bring in a ‘big-name’ striker all summer.
The 24-year-old ended last season in fine form and re-established himself under the guidance of Tim Sherwood as one of the Premier League’s most deadly strikers.

Newcastle United have been linked with a sensational loan swoop for Liverpool flop Mario Balotelli, despite his horrendous first season at Anfield.
Winnersports claim in an “exclusive” that the Magpies have enquired about Balotelli’s availability on loan for the 2015-16 season, although they also say the club are yet to receive a response from the Reds.
The report also claims that Newcastle made an earlier approach to Liverpool for Rickie Lambert, although they were rebuffed in their advances for the ex-Southampton man.

Yet it is claimed that Balotelli could make the switch to St James’ Park this summer that will surprise Newcastle supporters – particularly due to the fact he is a controversial figure.
The 24-year-old Italian started his career at Lumezzane before moving to Inter Milan in 2007. He initially impressed Jose Mourinho at the San Siro, only for the now-Chelsea boss to...

Liverpool will be looking to avenge their early Champions League exit when they face Besiktas in the Euopa League round of 32 tonight.
The Reds drew against Basel in their final group match in December, resigning them to third in Group B and a place in the Europa League.
Brendan Rodgers’ men won just one of their six group matches in the Champions League – a narrow victory over Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets – while Thursday’s opponents Besiktas go into the game off the back of an impressive group stage campaign in the Europa.
Slaven Bilic’s side are unbeaten in this season’s competition and topped a group involving Tottenham Hotspur. The Turks took four points from Spurs and also top the Turkish Super Lig, one point ahead of Fenerbahce.
Despite this, Besiktas will be well aware of the result when the two sides last met; Liverpool ran...

Liverpool’s conquerers Fc Basel will be looking to continue their Champions League fantasy when they host Fc Porto in the last 16 tonight.
The Swiss club weren’t fancied to do much in the group stages as they were highly tipped to finish third in a group that included The Reds, Real Madrid and Bulgaria’s Ludogorets.
However, they managed to secure a point in the final group game at Anfield to steal second place and qualification from Brendan Rodgers’ side.
They are up against it however as they face a Porto side that went through the group stages unbeaten. The Portuguese side won four and drew two in a group that included Shakhtar Donetsk, Atletico Bilbao and Bate Borisov.
Porto are also the second top scorers in this season’s competition. Only Chelsea’s 17 goals betters their tally of 16.

Last summer saw Brendan Rodgers spend over £100 million as he aimed to improve on the squad that challenged for the Premier League title last season.
There was a huge squad overhaul with the likes of Daniel Agger, Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto, Luis Suarez, Martin Kelly and Pepe Reina all being shown the Anfield exit door, arguably some of them should still be at the club.
With the money that Liverpool got from the sale of Suarez, they invested it on improving the depth of the squad so they could challenge for the title again.
Some of the players Rodgers brought in failed to impress in the early stages of their Liverpool career, most notably Dejan Lovren and Mario Balotelli.
The signings had all Liverpool fans excited for this season, and a recent turn in results suggests that the squad is now starting to gel. However, they...

What a difference a year makes.
Last winter, Liverpool were mounting a serious title bid, Brendan Rodgers’ expansive attacking approach was beginning to flow and fans were dreaming of a whole new era of success in the long term, even as pundits wrote their credentials as contenders off. Fast forward 12 months and Liverpool sit in 8th – a massive 17 points off leaders Chelsea – and are struggling to convince anyone that they can repeat last season’s Champions League qualification.
So what changed? The summer’s transfer policy proved somewhat wayward, and goals have come at a premium where they once came so easily. The Reds have unthinkably scored 20 less than Chelsea, and it’s clear that they need to address their attacking deficiencies if they are to make a late charge up the table and sneak into the Champions League once more.

In the summer, Brendan Rodgers’ managerial stock couldn’t really have been much higher if he had tried. The Northern Irishman had just guided Liverpool to within a few games of winning their maiden Premier League title, and he had got the Reds playing some of the most expansive, entertaining football in the club’s history. He was young, attacking and seemingly destined to be the heir to Bill Shankly at Anfield.
Fast forward six months though, and the 41-year-old is now being tipped to lose his job at some point before next summer. Liverpool have endured an appalling start to the 2014/15 campaign, and the sale of Luis Suarez and loss of Daniel Sturridge to injury has hit the team hard. The Merseysiders find themselves in the bottom half of the Premier League, and Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to bitter rivals Manchester United was another low point...

It’s fair to say that Liverpool’s 2014/15 season has been an utter disaster so far. Having so brilliantly finished second last season, nobody would have predicted such a poor showing this time around, regardless of the exit of the wondrous Luis Suarez. Brendan Rodgers’ side have produced consistently insipid performances, and because of it they currently lie in eleventh place in the Premier League and have been eliminated from the Champions League.
It’s incredibly hard to think of anyone who has actually played well for the Reds so far this season- Daniel Sturridge’s reputation has probably been enhanced the most because he’s been injured for the majority of the campaign. The likes of Kolo Toure and Lucas Leiva have come in and done better than many would have predicted, while youngsters Alberto Moreno, Javier Manquillo and Emre Cam have at least shown a bit of promise.

They say the grass isn’t always greener. For these players, they were never able to replicate their Anfield prowess elsewhere, no matter how forcefully they tried. Whether they were pushed out the door due to their ageing limbs, or they simply jumped at the chance to sign for a ‘bigger’ club in the hope of hoisting some more trophies, their transfers simply did not work out for them, and they subsequently spent their remaining years as a professional trying in to vain to recapture some glimpse of form.
Liverpool supporters might feel a slight sense of smugness in how some of these moves failed to pay off for the footballers that they used to worship every weekend. They might have felt cheated by a perceived lack of loyalty, and indeed some of these players have burnt bridges on Anfield, tossing their reputation on Merseyside into the...

On Tuesday evening, Liverpool face Basel in what has the potential to become another one of those famous Anfield Champions League nights. Brendan Rodgers’ team know that victory over the Swiss side will see them progress to the knockout stages of Europe’s greatest club competition, surely lining up a glamour tie against one of the biggest clubs on the continent in the process. There is a lot of work to be done, however, and Basel have proved to be a thorn in the Reds’ side a few times in the past.
Since the Champions League’s inception in 1992, Liverpool have enjoyed some truly memorable victories. They took almost a decade to qualify for the competition, but they have certainly made up for it since. Quite often they have gone into huge ties as the underdogs, only to produce gutsy, unforgettable performances and progress to the next round.

Liverpool’s season has been absolutely grotesque so far, let’s be honest. They have almost played 20 games, in all competitions, and it’s feasible to say that Brendan Rodgers’ side’s only good performance was in the 3-0 win over Tottenham at White Hart Lane back in August. Wednesday’s 2-2 draw away to Ludogorets in the Champions League was another insipid display from the Reds, and huge question marks remain about the quality throughout the side.
The January transfer window is fast approaching, and there are definite areas Liverpool need to strengthen in. Simon Mignolet looks as competent as a pub player in goal, and the cohesion and consistency in the defence isn’t much better. There is a lack of drive and dominance in midfield, while the forwards are simply not contributing enough goals and assists in the absence of the injured Daniel Sturridge.

It’s fair to say that Liverpool’s start to the 2014/15 season has been one of huge disappointment. Although last year’s Premier League exploits were always unlikely to be repeated, especially given the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, there were still many who felt they could still mount some sort of challenge at the top.
Brendan Rodgers made nine signings in the summer, as he looked to bolster his squad with the addition of Champions League football, but the majority of those purchases have flattered to deceive so far. Star performers from 2013/14 have also struggled to match those brilliant performances this time around, and the results have been poor because of it.
Five defeats in the league already is extremely worrying, while qualification for the Champions League knockout stages now looks like a real struggle too. Some Reds players have been worse than others,...

27 April 2014. It was the date when Liverpool’s hopes and dreams began to unravel in an excruciatingly slow and painful fashion. Since their club captain surrendered their command of the league title with that fateful slip, the following six months has been nothing short of a nightmare for the Reds supporters.
In the immediate aftermath of that crucial 2-0 loss to Chelsea at Anfield, a three-goal lead was forfeited at Selhurst Park, leading to a watershed of tears and heartbreak throughout the red half of Merseyside. The pain would not stop there, however, as they were forced to witness their talisman incur the wrath of another media witch-hunt during the World Cup before escaping in a £75 million move to Spain.

This weekend’s standout Premier League fixture sees Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool side host Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea team at Anfield. It was a fixture that played an enormous part in last season’s title race, with the Blues running out 2-0 winners to all but gift the championship to Manchester City. There is sure to be an element of revenge in the air from Rodgers and his players, but Mourinho will be completely aware of that, and will not be fazed.
It is a hugely important game for the Reds, in particular, who have really struggled for form so far this season. They have only really played well in one league game, away to Tottenham, and if they fail to hit top gear on Saturday they will be picked apart by the current league leaders.
The west London side are firing on all cylinders, and remain unbeaten.

Although the hours leading up to Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid on Tuesday evening were dominated by Brendan Rodgers’ decision to rest numerous key players – Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli all started on the substitutes’ bench- the starting eleven he chose did themselves proud.
Many predicted that the European champions would destroy the Reds, with or without key players, but the 1-0 defeat was actually a very fine achievement. Of course you never want to lose a game of football, but the way in which Liverpool went about their business in Spain was admirable.
There were outstanding individual performances from a number of fringe players, while other much-maligned stars produced the goods at one of the world’s most daunting grounds. Despite the loss, qualification for the knockout stages is still in the Reds’ hands,...

Liverpool are in Spain preparing for tonight’s daunting Champions League showdown with Real Madrid, knowing that a victory would arguably be the most unlikely triumph in the club’s history. Brendan Rodgers’ side are in extremely poor form, both domestically and in Europe, while Carlo Ancelotti’s star-studded team are scoring goals for fun and are the current champions of Europe. They key question is: has there ever been a game the Reds were less likely to win since the competition’s inception in 1992?
The 2005 Champions League Final is probably a good place to start. AC Milan, managed by Ancelotti at the time, had a ridiculous amount of talent in their side, whether it be Cafu and Paolo Maldini at the back, Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf and Kaka in midfield or the brilliant Andriy Shevchenko up front. Not many gave Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool much hope,...

A lot has been said in the past day or so about the power of confidence on Newcastle’s form, and how well Alan Pardew has done to ignore the calls on his head to “turn the team around”. Similarly, the more Liverpool-liking parts of the media (everyone south of Leeds, in other words) suggested Liverpool had simply lost the game, and that questions should be raised over Brendan Rodgers.
In truth, it was a little of both: Newcastle didn’t so much win the game as invite Liverpool to lose it by frustrating, containing and breaking, and looking for a mistake that would turn a good point into a great three. Liverpool duly obliged when Moreno dallied on a clearance and allowed West Side Story lookalike Ayoze Perez to finish smartly from close range.
But to dismiss the game that simply is to ignore the story of the victory for Newcastle,...

Liverpool duly obliged when Moreno dallied on a clearance and allowed West Side Story lookalike Ayoze Perez to finish smartly from close range.
But to dismiss the game that simply is to ignore the story of the victory for Newcastle,...

A lot of talk has already appeared regarding who Newcastle boss Alan Pardew should play tomorrow against Liverpool: in the wake of the Man City game, the manager now has one of the most difficult decisions he’s ever had to make. Had that youthful team lost, he could have cast all of those players off as back-up to the first team (as most of them seemingly were by their selection in the first place), but now he has the added head-ache of having to drop some players who have played out of their skin.
Should Ryan Taylor play? Should Rolando Aarons? Is Papiss Cisse fit enough to come straight back in? What about Steven Taylor? These are just some of the questions that face the manager as he stares at his note-pad wondering which players to put out against Brendan Rodgers’ side for the early kick off, and overall,...

Up until the start of pre-season this year, you might be forgiven for only recognising Rolando Aarons as one of the “bairns” who sometimes gets a namecheck in Newcastle Reserve game match reports on Nufc.com, but things have changed rapidly for the player who said this was going to be his year back in January.
I'll surprise a few people this year I promise, God has a big plan for me this year #Hardwork #DebutYear...

Sadly for Liverpool fans, the start of the Premier League in 1992 coincided with the end of twenty years of dominance by the Reds: the 1970s and 1980s had been bossed by them, but now they had to sit back and watch bitter rivals Manchester United conquer all that stood before them.
Despite this, there have still been numerous impressive campaigns by Liverpool over the last 22 years. Ok, that elusive first league title since 1990 continues to elude them, but considering their expectations have been lower than in previous decades, they have achieved great things at times. Gerard Houllier, Rafa Benitez and Brendan Rodgers have all created excellent Reds teams during their time in charge- the hope is that the latter will turn his current crop into champions one day- becoming one of the country’s most formidable teams along the way.
Selecting a top five is harder than it may seem,...

Since the Premier League began in 1992, Liverpool have suffered numerous highs and lows. Graeme Souness and Roy Hodgson both did their level best to drag the club into obscurity during their respective reigns as manager, while Gerard Houlller, Rafa Benitez and, currently, Brendan Rodgers, have all come close to bringing the glory days back to Anfield.
Throughout that time, some wonderful players have represented the Reds. Whether it be commanding centre-backs, world-class midfielders or lethal strikers, Liverpool have had it in abundance. The hardest thing is whittling down all those great players to a single best starting 11.
Who makes the cut up front out out of Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez? Which midfield enforcer gets the nod out of Didi Hamann and Javier Mascherano?
Here is Liverpool’s Greatest XI Of The Premier League Era……….

Since the Premier League’s inception in 1992, Liverpool have never been reluctant to spend money. Brendan Rodgers spent over £100m during the most recent summer transfer window, while the likes of Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez also broke the bank during their time in charge.
Between them and fellow Reds managers during the Premier League era Graeme Souness, Roy Evans, Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish, they have signed many players for hefty fees, some of whom have been roaring successes and others who have failed spectacularly.
On the flip side, there are those players who have ended up being signed on the cheap, certainly in terms of their respective ability, before becoming Reds heroes and, in a few cases, legends.
With that in mind, here are the 11 Liverpool Premier League Signings Who Proved To Be Bargains.

Liverpool have never been dullards in the transfer market. Under Rafa Benitez, they strived to sign as many players as they could, mostly from the continent, hoping for the best most of the time. Kenny Dalglish placed a lot of faith in young English talent, to his detriment in most cases admittedly. Brendan Rodgers has offered up a mixed bag of results in terms of transfer dealings, from luring Italian mavericks one moment to signing 32 year old Southampton forwards the next.
The entertaining thing about being a Liverpool supporter is that they never know what they’re going to get, and certainly not in terms of the transfer market. Their dealings are reflected in their topsy-turvy results – they can be brilliant one moment, and so frustrating the next.
These are the players who nobody expected Liverpool to sign. Whether people thought the players...

EA Sports
The dust has now settled after the release of the FIFA 15 demo and gamers have taken to social media, forums and football stadiums to voice their opinions on the latest instalment of the FIFA series.
Reactions have been varied from: “EA Sports have almost achieved perfection” to “Not feeling this FIFA 15 demo; don’t think I’ll be queuing up at the midnight release.”
FIFA 15 has added the ability to measure the emotional state of all 22 players in the starting line-ups – Liverpool’s Mario Balotelli will no doubt always be on edge.
Other improvements include that the pitch will show signs of wear and tear as the game progresses, players’ kits will look ready for a cringeworthy Ariel advert as they jump from slide tackle to slide tackle and defenders will now perform David Luiz’s favourite move of placing their arms behind their back to avoid conceding a handball.

With the transfer window now shut, we are now experiencing that almost disinterest with FIFA 14 at the moment. This is after all the period where we are still playing with Mario Balotelli at AC Milan, Alexis Sanchez at Barcelona and Nikola Zigic remains at Birmingham City – did anyone update the now free agent to the Arsenal squad when those bizarre rumours surfaced?
Some of you will have spent the time moving Sanchez to Arsenal, Balotelli will now be with Brendan Rodgers’ side and Falcao will now be fronting up the meanest looking strike force in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
Despite all your squad updates, something just isn’t sitting right, you know FIFA 15 is out later this month and, having watched the trailer over and over again – some of you lucky guys and dolls will have nabbed a copy of the beta...

During the Premier League era, Liverpool have been a club who are known to spend money. This summer alone, manager Brendan Rodgers topped the £100M mark, bringing in the likes of Adam Lallana and Mario Balotelli to strengthen Liverpool’s squad as they plot a title challenge.
Rodgers has continued a tradition from former managers Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez who also weren’t afraid to splash the cash at Anfield, but his predecessors did so with mixed results.
There’s been many a player in the past who the Reds have well and truly over-paid for, with the £35M they paid for Andy Carroll undoubtedly the worst, along with fees paid for the likes of El Hadji Diouf and Djbril Cisse.
However, the Reds are no strangers to bargains either and have signed some of the world’s best players for a cut...

Qpr owner Tony Fernandes has just spoken to Sky Sports News to state that any move for Fabio Borini is highly unlikely. The major issue according to the former F1 team owner is that player expectations and agent expectations are too much of an impediment at the minute, and it’s not likely that anything can be negotiated before the end of the transfer window.
Borini had long been linked with a move to Sunderland, but with Sebastian Coates joining the Black Cats the chance to sign him on loan has disappeared, and Qpr had seemed to leap into the lead as the favourites to sign the Italian.
Sadly now for Qpr fans, Borini looks unlikely, though there is some good news as a move for Sandro is almost complete, and Rangers are still trying to make something happen to reunite Harry Redknapp with Jermain Defoe,...
