Greg Downs
- Composer
- Soundtrack
Short:
Greg Downs is a Composer/Producer from Saratoga Springs. Being no stranger to a stage, Downs has traveled the country in several rock bands, working in various capacities with producers like Ulrich Wild (White Zombie, Deftones, Staind), and Don Gilmore (Eve 6, Linkin Park), developing himself as both a guitarist and songwriter. Over the years Downs has refined and honed his craft into a tightly packaged pop sensible blend of guitar, piano and full rock symphonies. He began scoring films in 2005. Several shorts and a few awards later Greg has begun scoring feature length films and is always on the lookout for something new and interesting to be involved with.
Extended:
Greg began his music career at the age of 13 getting his first guitar. He soon found himself in local bands playing in back yards and tailgate parties. At the age of 16 he got his first taste of the music industry by befriending a major label artist. Soon they were writing demos together and recording day and night. Flights to Los Angeles and many major studio trips later Greg began to grasp the larger nature of what was possible with music and how geography did not bind him. Being from a small town in northern Utah this had always been a stigma of local artists.
By the age of 17 he found himself playing in the band SAND. He would go on to tour, put out records and develop as an artist and songwriter. SAND had the opportunity to record many demos, the more recent of which with Immortal Records for a development deal. This introduced him to Producer Ulrich Wild (White Zombie, Deftones, Staind). Ulrich really elevated Greg's awareness of the impact possible with guitars. This opened a doorway that would mark his musical path forever.
Flash forward a few years, band breakups, and projects later. We find Greg producing albums for other artists and working day and night to develop his skills in the studio. Mixing live shows at this point had also become a passion of his. Taking him all over the country including residency as FOH Engineer at the Whisky A Go Go in Los Angeles, a stint on Warped Tour, and the Last 9 years and running for the ASCAP Music Cafe at The Sundance Film Festival. These experiences have given Greg a much needed perspective on music creation and its relation to film.
Soon feeling the need to branch out and experiment, Greg started his solo career as a songwriter. Attending conferences, co-writing with major writers, and starting to experiment with film, he scored a short for the USU film festival and took best original soundtrack. His first time scoring to picture!
Greg's love for storytelling and film mixed with lots of encouragement from his new found writing community quickly materialized into a passion for putting music to picture, using his studio prowess and assembling beautiful sound scape's. Producing artists albums and writing/composing for film is Greg's greatest passion. He has recently received acclaim with his Theme "Solitude" featured in the award winning short film "X96". Recently getting requests for scores on exciting short films and inking his first independent feature, Greg is ecstatic to see what the future holds and what kind of stories he can bring to life with his music.
