Who'd have thunk a movie about a bunch of slobby ghost-hunting scientists would birth a franchise that's still going strong 40 years later? Call it fate, call it luck, call it karma (and call it more than a little Generation X nostalgia), "Ghostbusters" has endured all sorts of ups and downs on its unlikely journey to reaching middle age. Now, the stars of the late Ivan Reitman's original 1984 paranormal comedy (save for the late Harold Ramis) are coming back for a chapter that will see the old guard don their proton packs alongside a new generation of quipping, ghost-catching heroes.
"Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" is the direct followup to 2021's "Ghostbusters: Afterlife," itself a legacy sequel that introduced Egon Spengler's (Ramis) grown-daughter and grandkids as the heirs apparent to the family business. Contrary to its name, "Frozen Empire" will be hitting theaters just as things start to thaw out and winter gives way to spring,...

Happy Chicken Farms. Happy Egg Co. Organics Happy Family. Happy Farms. The Happy Chicken Project. In the worlds of farming and agriculture, "happy" is an extremely popular word -- so much so that the new movie "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget" avoided it entirely when naming their fictional chicken farm with a dark side. "Originally it was called Happy Land Farms, but we couldn't go there for legal reasons because so many food producers use 'happy' in their branding that it was just a minefield," director Sam Fell told /Film's Hannah Shaw-Williams in a new interview.

Voice acting can make or break the success of an animated film. In the past, Hollywood understood that in order to deliver the best possible film, actors able to convey a range of emotions without the assistance of their body language were brought in for the job. At some point, that skill was traded in for celebrity stunt casting, sparking endless debates surrounding casting decisions. That isn't to say that well-known actors don't frequently pull off character-defining performances -- quite the contrary. One of the best examples comes from 2000's "Chicken Run," which featured "Absolutely Fabulous" star Julia Sawalha as Ginger and Mel Gibson as "Rocky." Both performers are still working actors today, so one would think they'd return to voice the characters the long-awaited sequel "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget," right?
Wrong.
"Shazam!" star Zachary Levi has replaced Mel Gibson as Rocky while Thandiwe Newton is joining the cast as Ginger.

It's been over 20 years since Aardman made history with the release of the first "Chicken Run." The studio's first feature film, it became the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film of all time. This means that anticipations are quite high for the follow-up, "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget." How do you follow what was a rather simple premise, two decades later? Well, not without some hiccups.
The new film finds Ginger and Rocky living with the other chickens on an idyllic island. The couple have a daughter, named Molly, the first new chicken born on the island. This is a rather big retcon from the end of the first movie, which ends with a bunch of chicks on the island being trained by Fowler. Turns out, this was a conscious choice based on two important points.

Disney CEO Bob Iger sat down for an interview Thursday morning and started trending immediately after he said that the WGA and SAG-AFTRA’s conditions were “just not realistic” and that the prospect of a writers and actors strike was “very disturbing.”
Iger’s comments come on a historic day, when SAG-AFTRA is expected to announce they are joining WGA on the picket lines after their Wednesday contract negotiations deadline passed without a deal. It would be the first Hollywood double strike in sixty years.
Also notable for context, Iger’s comments arrive the day after his Disney contract was extended for an additional two years. Sky-high executive salaries have become a lightning rod during the WGA strike and a rallying cry on social media as CEOs.

Making a list of the 100 greatest movies of all time is the definition of "damned if you do, damned if you don't." You're always going to leave something off. It's never going to feel complete. There are some moments in filmmaking that must truly have been breathtaking to witness on set. For me, several of those exist within the "Star Wars" franchise. From Vader's "I am your father" line in "The Empire Strikes Back" to "The Duel of the Fates" lightsaber battle between Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jin, and Darth Maul in "The Phantom Menace," there are plenty of times when jaws must have dropped while filming. Now we can add the lightsaber battle between Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) and Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) on the Disney+ series "Obi-Wan Kenobi," because apparently, the whole crew stopped to watch. (And who can blame them?)
McGregor and Christensen had plenty of experience working together from their time in the prequel movies, and they did most of their lightsaber fighting themselves. At a Star Wars Celebration 2023 panel in London, attended by /Film's Hannah Shaw-Williams, "Obi-Wan Kenobi" director Deborah Chow,...

Casting for a big franchise project can often be very secretive, but when it came to casting a vital role for the Disney+ "Obi-Wan Kenobi" series, Disney and Lucasfilm took secretive to a new level. When she eventually got the chance to read the kinds of lines she would be saying if she got the role, there were still code names, and code names for those code names!

Big news for "Star Wars" fans: today's Lucasfilm Studio Showcase at Star Wars Celebration has officially announced three new live-action "Star Wars" films, which are currently in the making. Directors James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be helming these respective projects, and Filoni's new movie is set to focus on the New Republic while connecting the interconnected stories in Disney+ shows such as "The Mandalorian," The Book of Boba Fett," and "Ahsoka," among others.
Meanwhile, Mangold's movie will trace the beginnings of the Jedi as Force-sensitive beings, and Obaid-Chinoy's project will be fleshing out the events after "The Rise of Skywalker," with Rey (Daisey Ridley) setting the stage for a new Jedi Order. The announcement of the three, brand-new "Star Wars" projects certainly calls for celebration, as the last theatrical release in the franchise was 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker," post which we have only had to survive...

No one would ever accuse the BBC detective series "Luther" of being fluffy and light-hearted, but the film, "Luther: The Fallen Sun," is exceptionally bleak. The film, which sees detective John Luther (Idris Elba) try to capture a vicious serial killer named David Robey (Andy Serkis), is somehow even darker than the television series. In fact, there's even a real-life horror story wrapped into the film through a scene that takes place in front of the Anatomical Crucifixion, an ancient and rather disturbing work of art hanging in London's Royal Academy of the Arts. In a scene near the beginning of the film, Robey visits the Anatomical Crucifixion and sort of stares at it while he discusses his plans (via voiceover) for John Luther. Like the depiction of a flayed man before him, Robey wants Luther metaphorically crucified and laid bare, his layers peeled away for everyone to see.

What would "Luther" be without London? More specifically, what would the series be without its dark interpretation of the English Capital? Over five seasons of "Luther," creator and writer Neil Cross has maintained a commitment to delving under the carapace of the city, eschewing standard shots of recognizable landmarks in favor of unearthing a grimy underbelly. Of course, that's all mirrored in the character of Luther himself. Since the show debuted in 2011, Idris Elba's tortured detective has endured all manner of harrowing experience, witnessing friends and family die and coming to represent a human manifestation of the very urban decay that surrounds him. And what better place for a brilliant yet haunted detective to operate than in a great yet eroding city?

Every year, the /Film crew gathers together to debate, argue, and sometimes even agree on the 50 best moments of the year in cinema. The result: a mammoth list celebrating the best movie moments of the past 12 months. Incredible moments from great movies. Amazing scenes in overlooked films. Brilliant specks in otherwise bad films. Hot on the heels of "Avatar: The Way of Water," Empire Magazine already has a scoop about a key piece of casting news for the franchise's next sequel. "Game of Thrones" star Oona Chaplin was announced as a castmate for the sequels a full five years ago now, but details about her character are finally being made public. According to the March 2023 issue of Empire, the actress best known for playing Rob Stark's doomed wife Talisa will here play Varang, the leader of the Ash people.

It's officially 2023, which means we all made it around the sun again, and that's a victory in our book. That also means it's time to run through the films we're looking forward to the most over the next 12 months, starting with "Plane." Per our annual tradition, the /Film staff has narrowed down the huge list of movies set to arrive in 2023 to our 25 most anticipated picks... and as is likewise customary for us, our "top 25" list is actually a "top 30" list because there are far too many promising movies on the horizon to limit ourselves to 25 choices. Keep in mind, these are the films we're aware of right now. Every year brings surprises that blow us away.

The winter holidays are rapidly bearing down upon us, so what better way to get into the festive spirit than by streaming, er, Denis Villeneuve's dramatic thriller "Prisoners"? Luckily, for those who are not in the mood to watch Hugh Jackman brutalize Paul Dano for two-and-a-half hours, there are plenty of alternate options to choose from on Netflix this December.
In keeping with tradition, the final month of 2022 will see an eclectic mix of genre films and TV series make their way onto the streamer, along with more than a few awards season hopefuls. The latter group's ranks include a new screen take on D.H. Lawrence's classic erotic novel "Lady Chatterley's Lover" and a movie adaptation of "Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical." Then there are the latest films from multi-hyphenates Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Noah Baumbach ("White Noise"), on top of a pair of much-buzzed-about director-driven features that we will get to later.

When you think of Jason Momoa, you probably recall his time as Khal Drogo, the frighting war lord who spoke little and murdered plenty in the first season of "Game of Thrones." Or maybe you think of Arthur Curry, the muscle-bound King of Atlantis who is due to wield his trident at some point in 2023. If you're really cool, then you probably remember his time as the wonderfully named warm hugger and badass swordmaster Duncan Idaho. But the point is this: various roles have established Momoa as an oft-shirtless, very dangerous-looking muscly guy. This is exactly why he jumped at a chance to star in "Slumberland," where he plays the imaginary friend of any kid's dream.

The first tracks from Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio" dropped earlier today, and they're exactly as magical as we hoped they'd be. Del Toro's films always dazzle, and so do Alexandre Desplat's scores. In an interesting turn of events, 2022 happens to be the year of "Pinocchio" remakes. Earlier this year, the classic Carlo Collodi story about the little wooden boy was retold by Walt Disney Pictures and Robert Zemeckis, but it didn't capture the hearts of fans or critics like the studio's ground-breaking animated version did back in 1940. Next month, it's Netflix and Guillermo del Toro's turn to tackle the tale of the adventurous puppet with the help of stop-motion animation pioneer Mark Gustafson, whose work includes "The California Raisins Show," "The PJs," and "Fantastic Mr. Fox."

By the time Agatha Christie put her mustachioed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot to rest with "Curtain" in 1975, 44 books featured the character, including novels and short story collections. Three more story collections were released posthumously, and author Sophie Hannah has taken up the mantle in the last decade, releasing four Poirot novels since 2014. With a character that strong, there is seemingly no end in sight for Hercule Poirot on the page, and the same goes for screen adaptations, as Kenneth Branagh is set to make his third Poirot picture.

Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio” has entered the Best Picture conversation overnight following a successful premiere at the London Film Festival. But should we have counted it out in the first place? He’s talked at length in promotional material about his personal relationship to the tale of the wooden boy and about the bond it fostered with his mother.

The first reviews are in for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” and by all indications, the stop-motion animation is a resounding success. Fifteen years in the making, the film co-directed by del Toro and Mark Gustafson boasts an all-star cast of voice talent, including Ewan McGregor, Cate Blanchett, Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton. However, overwhelming praise for the latest take on Carlo Collodi’s classic tale centered on its visual and thematic approach.
Set in 1930s fascist Italy, “Pinocchio” separates itself from the rest as a “family movie” that “does not shy away from dark themes of death and war,” per Insider. Its critic Ayomikun Adekaiyero wrote that the adaptation “justifies its existence by modernizing the tale with beautiful stop-motion animation and a tear-jerking story.” On the flip side, Adekaiyero was “disappointed by the mediocrity of the musical elements of the movie,” adding that they were “secondary to the story.

It seems that The Long Night has been canceled, but instead we’ll be seeing another prequel that will focus on House Targaryen, which is one that a lot of people are likely wanting to see considering that the Targaryen’s are one of the most prominent families in the Game of Thrones series and yet we see so few of them that it’s hard to really get a feel for the house. HBO will be coming up with a new prequel series that will hopefully detail just how the Targaryen line came to take over Westeros, as Hannah Shaw-Williams of ScreenRant

According to Hannah Shaw-Williams of ScreenRant, Oscar-winning director Guillermo Del Toro, who’s known more for his fantastical and horrific images in movies that are far unlike Martin Scorsese’s upcoming movie, The Irishman, has given this movie a very great deal of support. That’s not so hard to believe really since those in Hollywood are either trying to build each other up through flattery and by seeing what we as audience members have to work a little harder to see at times, or they’re tearing each other down without mercy behind each other’s backs. It’s true that there is a middle

Oren Peli's original "Paranormal Activity" had a tortured history getting to screens, having premiered at festivals in rough form two years before Paramount released the $15,000 indie to unprecedented success.
As for the nightmarish sequels, things have been a dream, with the studio churning them out annually to a highly appreciative (read: scared out of their wits) audience. With "Paranormal Activity 4" about to make people poop their pampers in theaters across the country, we're asking the inevitable question: Will there be a fivequel?
Although we haven't read the deal memo for Oren Peli's contract with Satan, we assume the dark lord demanded at least 40 or 50 sequels before the filmmaker's soul can be set free. Hence, we think "Paranormal Activity 5" is inevitable, but what do the filmmakers say?
"It's definitely too early to even start talking about 'Paranormal 5,'" producer Jason Blum told Dread Central. "I would say that...

A while back, it had been announced that David Yates – the man who directed some of the best of the Harry Potter films – was planning on making a big screen version of Doctor Who. The problem being that Yates’ vision was of a completely different Doctor, absolutely separate from the established canon of the series. Many Whovians (myself included) called foul, and questioned how someone could even imagine such a thing. After all, it was attempted in the sixties, with Dr. Who and the Daleks, and Daleks’ Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D. Both films starred Hammer Studios veteran Peter Cushing as Dr. Who, an eccentric human inventor who created Tardis, which only resembled the ship on the outside, the inside looking like an indoor lab. The two films took Terry Nation’s first two Dalek stories from the original series and transposed them for the films, which little resemble the much better program.
