Sony Pictures TV and NBC are putting together a drama series sequel to last year's faith-based film adaptation of Pastor Todd Burpo's bestselling book "Heaven Is For Real".
The project is based on Todd and Sonya Burpo's sequel book "Heaven Changes Everything" and revolves around a small-town pastor who must find the courage and faith to lead his parishioners after the news of his son's visit to Heaven due to a near-death experience begins to capture worldwide attention.

You’d think any movie that an all-powerful deity had a hand in would be awesome, right? Turns out, not so much. There’s barely even a story here. I’m “biast” (pro): always want to love Greg Kinnear and Kelly Reilly

Heaven is for real? Proven by a movie?! Well, no. At best, this cinematic sermon almost humbly acknowledges that even Christians know their fairy tale about a heaven of fluffy white clouds and Jesus in a bathrobe sounds like, you know, a fairy tale that is hard to accept at face value. At worst, it’s a shameless money grab by a family in desperate financial straits cashing in on the fantasies of their little boy. I don’t see how either option — or...

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" remained in the top spot at the domestic box office with another $27 million, bringing its worldwide total to $586 million. The best opening of the Easter weekend for a new release went to the faith-based film "Heaven is for Real," starring Greg Kinner. The movie, which landed in third place, is based on the real-life story of pastor Todd Burpo, whose young son said he visited heaven during emergency surgery. It earned $21.5 million on a budget of only $12 million and has a 53% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes. Taking fourth place is Johnny Depp's "Transcendence" sci-fi film, which bombed with $11.2 million on a budget of $100 million. It also has a terrible 20% rating. "The movie just missed its audience," said Warner Bros. Marlon Wayans' "A Haunted House" sequel, which cost only $4 million to make, ended up in fifth place with $9.1 million. The first film hit theaters in...

When it comes to faith-based movies at the box office, “Heaven Is for Real” is the latest to show that smaller may be better, at least in terms of return on investment. The drama, based on the 2010 best-selling Christian book written by Kansas pastor Todd Burpo and conservative author Lynn Vincent, scored an Easter weekend surprise with its strong $21.5 million three-day haul, and has taken in more than $28 million since opening on Wednesday. That's a major score for Sony and producers Joe Roth and pastor Thomas “T.D.” Jakes, who produced “Heaven Is for Real” for $12 million and...

It's Johnny vs. Jesus at the box office this weekend, but which should you see? Depp dulls in Transcendence, but Greg Kinnear makes a real case for Heaven. Skip ThisTranscendence var brightcovevideoid = '3482679943001'; Unfortunately for Johnny Depp, he is not Her. In 2003, Colton Burpo, the 5-year-old son of Nebraska pastor Todd Burpo, had emergency surgery for a burst appendix, and though he didn’t technically “die” or have a “near-death experience,” he left his body for approximately three (Earth) minutes and visited heaven — where he met Jesus (still bearing the marks of his crucifixion), Mary, the Holy Spirit, angels in white choir robes with wings, the grandfather who perished long before he was born, and the sister who died in his mother’s womb but was now growing normally, beautifully. Because heaven time is longer than Earth time, Colton was able to observe many things that conformed to descriptions in Scripture, of which he — being 5 — could obviously have had no prior knowledge.Pastor Burpo’s account of his son’s journey became a huge best seller and is now an exceedingly gentle movie called Heaven Is for Real, directed by Randall...

"Heaven is for Real" is a real success at the box-office. The faith-based drama starring Greg Kinnear wowed with a $3.7 million take on 2,400 screens over its opening day Wednesday, good enough for a No. 1 finish over the blockbuster sequels "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Rio 2." The film's long-term prospects are looking promising as well, with audience exit polling resulting in an "A" CinemaScore for the film, which was made for a reported pricetag of only $12 million. Based on the bestselling non-fiction book by Todd Burpo, "Heaven is for Real" centers on a young boy (Connor Corum) who comes back from a near-death experience claiming he experienced Heaven. The film's box-office triumph follows on the success of other recent faith-based films including "God's Not Dead" ($42 million to date), "Son of God" ($62 million) and Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" ($249 million) starring Russell Crowe. Other wide releases this weekend include “Transcendence" starring Johnny Depp,...

Chicago – It would be easy to dismiss “Heaven Is for Real,” given that it is based on the visions of the afterlife by a child, that just happens to coincide perfectly with Christian doctrine (Jesus, Angels, etc.). But there is more to this film in the sincerity of its spirituality, and it succeeds with that inspiration.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The key was establishing a viable authenticity to the atmosphere of the vision, and get the right cast to deliver it, which director Randall Wallace (“Secretariat,” “We Were Soldiers”) was able to accomplish. He creates a hometown America that is part of the scenario, a luxurious and spacious hinterland of unyielding peace. The juxtaposition of the otherworldly garden of the boy’s vision with the wonder of earth creates a “heaven” that is for real, if we open our eyes. That spirit of simplicity becomes the kingdom.

The film Heaven is For Real begs the question, is heaven for real? The film is based on the true story of a four-year-old boy’s account of heaven as told by his pastor/father Todd Burpo played by Greg Kinnear.
The story takes place in small town America. The Burpoes are a beautiful family, struggling financially while going through life with just about the best attitude possible. In the face of typical life adversities, we learn the importance of love and faith to this family. When the unthinkable happens, their community comes together in prayer for the beyond adorable Colton Burpo (Connor Corum) after he has fallen devastatingly ill. I cannot begin to describe just how super cute this boy is. Those that have read the book will not be disappointed at just how perfect and true to character this young actor has played his role.

When you die and go to heaven will you really see your late loved ones, sit on Jesus’ lap, and get serenaded by angels? That’s exactly how Colton Burp described his trip to the afterworld after an out-of-body experience when he was four years old. His father Todd, a pastor in Imperial Nebraska, shared his son’s experience in the family-friendly book Heaven Is For Real which was a surprise best-seller on the Christian circuit and now here comes the film version. Heaven Is For Real is as wholesome and square as it sounds. No profanity. No sex. No violence. That’s its hook. Unpretentious and plainspoken, it knows its target Christian audience well.
The plot of Heaven Is For Real is disarmingly simple and there appears to be no question regarding the general circumstances themselves. The Burpos are a classic wholesome American family from the heartland, hardworking and faithful.

Despite its hopelessly silly title, the handsome and humanistic “Heaven Is for Real” is poised to become the biggest Christian crossover hit since the “Chronicles of Narnia” franchise. That's because director Randall Wallace (“Secretariat,” “We Were Soldiers”) offers a soft sell on Reverend Todd Burpo's truth – that his then three-year-old son Colton met Jesus during a life-saving operation, as related in his best-selling non-fiction book. Wallace smartly leaves room for skeptics of Burpo's account to maintain their doubt; what matters most is that audiences understand the film character's reasons for choosing to believe his son's vision/dream/delirium. Chicago – The actor Greg Kinnear has been known for his neat and tidy image, but never has he portrayed a religious leader. His role as Todd Burpo – a pastor of a church and the father whose son believes “Heaven Is for Real” – brings the energy of spirituality to the movies just in time for the Easter holiday.
Born in small town Logansport, Indiana, Greg Kinnear was the son of a career diplomat, and moved around quite a bit as a child, even living overseas. Four years later, he made a splashy film debut as David Larrabee in the 1995 remake of Billy Wilder’s “Sabrina,” directed by Sydney Pollack.

Whether or not you consider yourself a religious person, you've probably heard of the book Heaven Is For Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip To Heaven and Back. It recounts the tale of four-year-old Nebraskan Colton Burpo, who bewildered his parents when he told them he had visited with departed loved ones and Jesus in heaven. Colton's father, Christian pastor Todd Burpo, translated this into a book with the help of journalist Lynn Vincent. The resulting bestseller is the basis for the Greg Kinnear vehicle above, which has him playing the part of Pastor Burpo. In 2003, Colton was a chipper toddler when he was abruptly laid low by appendicitis and rushed into emergency surgery. Some counted his survival as a miracle. But following this brush with death, Colton began to share strange stories with his parents. As you can see in the trailer up top, Colton...

“Braveheart” and “We Were Soldiers” writer/director Randall Wallace gets spiritual in the “based on a true story” film “Heaven is For Real”. Apparently it’s about a kid who almost died and went to heaven, then came back and talked to people about it. He then wrote a book. Well, his parents probably helped him, or someone else did (what is he, 3?), and now a movie is being made about it. Cute kid. He’s like a countrified version of Haley Joel Osment. Not my cup of tea, but hey, it looks inspirational and all that good stuff. Might be a good flick for the kids and parents who think movies these days are just too darn violent and whatnot. Please to watch. The film stars Academy Award® nominee and Emmy® award winning actor Greg Kinnear as Todd Burpo and co-stars Kelly Reilly as Sonja Burpo, the real-life couple...

Believing is at the heart of "Heaven Is For Real," an upcoming adaptation of Todd Burpo's bestselling Christian book.
The movie's first trailer was just released and outlines the uplifting story: Greg Kinnear and Kelly Reilly play parents of a young boy who has a near-death experience. After his miraculous recovery, the boy astonishes everybody by recounting his interactions with dead people, including his great-grandfather.
"Everything he talks about is impossible," Kinnear marvels. The father wants to believe what his son is saying, while the rest of their community treats him with suspicion and outright hostility.
"Heaven Is For Real" also stars Thomas Haden Church and Margo Martindale, and opens in theaters April 14. Check out the trailer above.

We Were Soldiers and Secretariat director Randall Wallace was tasked with bringing the tale to the big screen, which stars Greg Kinnear as Todd, Kelly Reilly as his wife Sonja, and newcomer Connor Corum as their son Colton.

According to Variety, Randall Wallace (who made the narrative mess that is Secretariat) is set to craft a film version of Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent’s “Heaven is For Real: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back.” The book made waves by 1) claiming to be a true account of a 3-year-old’s story that he went to Heaven during an emergency surgery to save his life and 2) for dominating the Best Seller lists. So what’s in Heaven? Angels, of course, as well as a horse that only Jesus can ride, an enormous God and exactly zero eyeglasses. Burpo, the boy’s father, contends that the child mentions details about their family that he had no way of knowing without actually visiting Heaven and visiting with them. The child never mentions that God is made out of Terry Gilliam cut-out pieces. As acknowledged before, Christianity...

Well, this is a bit unexpected. Randall Wallace, the writer behind such manly fare as "Braveheart," "Pearl Harbor," and "We Were Soldiers" (which he also directed), seems to be showing a softer side of late. A couple of years ago, he delivered the wholesome Disney horseracing movie "Secretariat," and now he's lined up a movie about a little kid who goes to heaven. We're not fucking kidding. Variety reports that Wallace has signed up to develop an adaptation of Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent's best-selling book "Heaven Is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back." The apparently based-on-a-true-story tale follows a little kid who has a near-death experience, and claims to have visited heaven. Naturally, no one believes him in the small town where he lives, but he soon starts mentioning details about the various folks who have passed away. Get out the hankies.

We Were Soldiers and Secretariat director Randall Wallce is set to develop a faith-based drama for Sony Pictures called Heaven is Real. The movie is based on a book written by Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent, called Heaven Is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back.
This is definitely a different kind of film for Wallace who also wrote Braveheart and Pearl Harbor, the latter of which wasn't his best work. The book tells the true story behind Burpo's son's near-death experience and subsequent claim that he visited heaven. His family and the members of his small town do not believe him until his stories identify people who have passed away.
I can see a movie like this being a big hit. It's based on a true story, it's interesting, and there's an epic faith-based market out there for this kind of film.
